Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on July 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

What would be the equivalent of “Freudian slip” in Russian?  Maybe it’s the same as “reset.”  At yesterday’s press conference following the meeting between Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Obama goofed by saying exactly what everyone else believes (h/t HA reader Bruce G):

At a news conference Obama gave a carefully worded reply about the effectiveness of the leadership tandem when a U.S. journalist bluntly asked “who is really in charge here in Russia?”

But minutes later, speaking about Medvedev’s objections to a controversial missile defense system planned for central Europe, Obama slipped:

“I suspect when I speak to President..eh.. Prime Minister Putin tomorrow, he will say the same thing.”

President … Prime Minister … Czar … heck, you can call Putin everything but late for borscht, and it would probably be accurate.  It’s considered mildly rude and amateurish to let it slip in public, however.

Besides, that wasn’t the most amateurish statement Obama made at the press conference.  This was:

Ben Feller of the Associated Press asked Obama whether he feels he has “full trust” in Medvedev and whether he feels certain about who is in charge in Russia, President Medvedev or Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Obama responded, “Yes, I trust President Medvedev.”

Well, those who are ignorant of history (Carter’s kiss on Brezhnev’s cheek, Bush’s look into Putin’s eyes) are doomed to repeat it.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

And the hits keep on coming.

Maybe Ochimpy was confused because he doesn’t know who is in charge in his administration? I still say Emanuel has his hand up Ochimpy’s back working his mouth like Edger Bergen did with Charlie McCarthy.

The future does not belong to those who gather armies on a field of battle or bury missiles in the ground.

You know what? I get what you mean. But the loss of innocent human life is obviously the fly in the ointment.

I think of Jean Paul Sartre’s novel The Reprieve. That’s what we need: to be marched to the brink of annihilation only to be spared at the last second, not by Obarky’s gamesmanship, but by some totally lucky yet random event, like the Soviet (let’s not mince words) detonator fails, or something like that.

Pickering was on Charlie Rose last night discussing this Russia/US summit. For a solid half hour he said nothing. His lips moved, some sounds came out, but the words bounced around the atmosphere. He referenced issues without ever identifying a single one. He spoke of opportunities without identifying a single one. He spoke of all the right moves Barry made, without identifying a single one. It was word magic at it’s best. Any lefty who watched it came away with a bag full of $50 words to swallow with the kool-aid.

I think Obama trust them because he is one of them or wants to be.

As two commenters observed in “The Anchoress’s” blog post above about Obama’s radical past, the problem with the idiocy of brokering an agreement with Russia is that 1) The problem is not that Russia has numerous nuclear warheads. It is that Russia has sold and shared its nuclear hardware and expertise with its client states. and 2) Russia can meet the conditions of the agreement to diminish its numbers of warheads by distributing them to those client states.

We can be sure that the KGB had Obama’s number as a “useful idiot” from the time the tool-in-chief was a pie-eyed student.

onlineanalyst on July 7, 2009 at 9:42 AM

Reading “President Putin” @ Drudge, came by to enjoy Ed’s take on Obama in Russia.

Excellent point, Ed:

Well, those who are ignorant of history (Carter’s kiss on Brezhnev’s cheek, Bush’s look into Putin’s eyes) are doomed to repeat it.

I doubt, however, that Obama is unaware of those political moments. Instead, Obama’s perpetuation of this adoration for Russian authoritarians is the point to note. Obama would never acknowledge anyone’s superiority unless he actually THINKS he and the US are inferior. (He falls far short of meeting Ghaddafi’s advice.) Hence, his bow to the Muslim King for his favor, his absolute yet unearned trust in Medvedev for his favor, and his bumbling over titles with Putin for his favor. Measure all that in context of snubbing Europeans and US allies. It wouldn’t necessarily result from overt calculation, though that’s absolutely the case behind the scenes, but certainly is subconscious, all the more revealing on stage.

Aw c’mon you guys…Barry will do fine in Russia. He alone understands that a commonality of interests can bring nations together.

Why just a couple of weeks ago, when he was in Pock-e-ston, Barry expressed his love for the great Urdu poets and his ability to cook up Eastern dishes like keema and dal.

This week, the Moscow Times is reporting that Barry knows and loves the work of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. I bet’cha he reads it in Cyrillic…to his daughters, when he tucks them in at night.

AND, as a bonus, just like Barry, Pushkin has African roots! His grandfather, Gannibal, came from Ethiopia.

See? How can the Russians not adore him? It’s a match made in heaven I tell ya.

Riddle me this Batman.

If the current treaty stipulates a maximum number of and we have warheads and russia has over 2550 and we 2202, why would any sane/rational/smart person thing that when we lower this to 1500 the russians will honor the agreement?

Unless your real goal is to neuter the defense capability of your own country.
