Gore: Fighting global warming is like fighting Nazis; Update: ToL scrubs its story of Nazi references

posted at 7:23 pm on July 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Just when you think you’ve heard every stupid thing a politician can say, Al Gore swoops in to the rescue.  Faster than one can say Manbearpig, Gore tells an audience in Oxford that the fight against global warming needs the same kind of commitment that Winston Churchill demonstrated against the Nazis in World War II.  Unfortunately, the only troops we see in this fight all wear green jackets:

Al Gore today compared the battle against climate change with the struggle against the Nazis.

The former US Vice President said the world lacked the political will to act and invoked the spirit of Winston Churchill by encouraging leaders to unite their nations to fight climate change. …

Speaking in Oxford at the Smith School World Forum on Enterprise and the Environment , sponsored by The Times, Mr Gore said: “Winston Churchill aroused this nation in heroic fashion to save civilisation in World War II.”

He added: “We have everything we need except political will but political will is a renewable resource.”

Consider this a slightly milder version of Paul Krugman’s Earth-treason argument.  Gore isn’t quite calling skeptics traitors, but if politicians don’t stop listening to them, they will let the Nazis win.  And we hate those guys, right?

Of course, this analogy suffers on several levels, including intellect and taste.  World War II was not a debate over economic theories and governing philosophies, or even a difference of opinion on scientific hypotheses.  The Nazis had more mundane concerns, like world domination and the extermination of the Jews.  While Winston Churchill had warned about the Nazis for years and had been shunned for it by the British establishment as a war-monger, he had the political will to do something about the Nazis because the Nazis had begun attacking France and Great Britain.  With guns, bombs, and real death, too, and not just hyperbole about a Waterworld future.

When advocates resort to this kind of hyperbole, it’s usually due to a lack of factual support to their arguments.  Invoking the Nazis is about as hyperbolic as it gets.  What’s next, the aliens from Independence Day?

Excelsior!

Update: The Times of London has now scrubbed all of the references to “Nazi” from its article at the link.  Simon at Deceiver wonders “who got to them.”  Apparently, the ToL doesn’t have the testicular fortitude to stand up to Gore and his disciples.  Looks like a white feather is in order.

Update II: Simon managed to grab a screen cap of the header for the article, which they forgot to clean.

So.. I assume that everyone who believes Al Gore about global warming also believes he invented the internet?

Every day, in every way, Al Gore gets stupider and stupider.

But today, he reached the absolute zenith of stupidity with this completely jackass statement of his.

After this, he cannot sink any lower.

Global warming might kill me, this I know,
Though my thermostat is turned down, oh so low.
Though my lights are all set on dim,
Still Lord Al bids me to scrimp more for Him.

Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
The Goracle tells me so.

Though my Honda is oh so slow,
With my mind in his hands I’ll go.
On through life, to others let come what may,
He’ll be fling in a private jet going His Lordly way.

Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
The Goracle tells me so.

Though I am no longer young,
I have learned so much which He’s begun.
Let me live in a cave like my ancestors did for The Goracle with a smile,
Go with Him the extra carbon credit pile.

Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
The Goracle tells me so.

When the days are hot and long,
In my mind He puts a bong.
Telling me in words so clear,
“Let Me be clear, I am The Goracle that you must hear.”

Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
The Goracle tells me so.

When His work in America is done,
And His bank accounts weigh a ton.

He will take my roof above,
Then I’ll understand all about His love.

Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
The Goracle tells me so.

I praise The Goracle, does he know?
Have I ever told Him so?
The Goracle loves to hear me say,
That I will buy His carbon credits every day.

Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
Yes, Global warming might kill me!
The Goracle tells me so.

BillCarson on July 7, 2009 at 8:04 PM

There is no need for government to interfere in the economy in order to stop “global warming.” If it exists, the free market solutions will always be vastly superior to that of the state. It’s all very simple. Just about everyone that supports govt interference for the sake of GW are all socialists, so they believe in state intervention regardless.

What I really want to know is this: If global warming climate change is going TO KILL US ALL UNLESS WE ACT NOW!!! Why don’t they put on a nationally televised debate on the subject??? If this is so goddamned serious cereal, why won’t Al waddle his fat ass out on stage with some of his top people and hash it all out with some one like Inhofe and his own team of scientists? Just a primer for the people??

Because he knows he’d get his ass kicked and lose a ton of money that’s why.

Look over the descriptions of the following 2 houses and see if you can tell which belongs to “The one who calls himself an environmentalist.”

#1. A 20-room mansion(not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas, add on a pool(and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400.00
per month. In natural gas alone(which the last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not in a northern or Midwestern “snow belt,” either. It’s in the South.

#2. Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every “green” feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet(4 bedrooms) and is nestled on an arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the
ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling
system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected after then
irrigates the land surrounding the house. Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural landscape.

HOUSE #1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist-AL GORE!

HOUSE #2. (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas. Also known as “the Texas White House,” it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

BuckeyeSam on July 7, 2009 at 8:31 PM

Global warming in a nutshell:

1. Is the Earth getting warmer? ANSWER: Maybe. In the northern hemisphere, the “Little Ice Age” spanned the 15th to the 18th centuries. Presumably the trend has been upward if you measure it from there.

2. Is man causing global warming? ANSWER: Who knows. The Earth’s climate has always fluctuated. Present computer models aren’t accurate enough to reliably tell us whether current changes are affected by human activity.

3. If man is causing global warming, is it within the technological power of the West to stop it? ANSWER: Probably not. The largest emitters of carbon dioxide are developing countries like China and India, who aren’t interested in throttling their growth to change the weather.

4. If the West has the technological ability to reverse global warming, would the economic costs be something that society would tolerate? ANSWER: Of course. Nuts and berrys are delicious, and mud huts are a wallet-friendly alternative to homes and condos. Cost is a particularly important factor since there will be no jobs.

Gore is promoting unscientific hysteria.

Which is what the Nazis and Lysenko-ist Soviets did.

The Climate Change dogma is a cult not a science.

When advocates resort to this kind of hyperbole, it’s usually due to a lack of factual support to their arguments.

One might say it’s usually due to a lack of intellectual acumen and honesty.

Ed,

I must beg to differ, Al Gore is correct(never thought those words would pass my lips) but we are indeed talking again about world domination. By Eco-Nazis bent upon control over all aspects of our lives and depriving the masses of prosperity, leaving themselves to pass out waivers & exemptions to political sychophants who choose to lap at their heels.

We need to start getting serious about the stakes on the table. All this blathering regarding Jacko, or whether or not Palin has damaged her chances in ‘12 is the equivilent of whistling past the grave yard.

The breath-taking haste with with the stimulus was passed which like the cap & trade bill wasn’t even read. Keep an eye over your shoulder for the next Cloward/Piven “manufactured crisis” and whatever boondoggle they’ll pass screaming that the sky is fallling!

Billions allocated to ACORN to rig the vote again & they are now in charge of the all important cenus, how do ya think thats going to work out? Morons in the house trying to repeal the 22nd. It all portends very bad in whether 2012 will be in time to stop the usurpation of whatever is left.

You gotta love it. Churchill’s famous “We will fight” speech during the Battle of Britain is one of the least-green-sounding war speeches ever made:

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.”

Blam! Kapow! Whack! Kablooey! Fight on sea and ocean; beaches, landing grounds, fields, streets, hills — oy to the veh, what a carbon footprint! British Fleet carrying on the struggle, for crying out loud. Belching smoke all the while! Gobbling up diesel fuel! The New World stepping forward with “power” and “might”! Oh, the flora- and faunanity! Talk about Bigfoot, blackening-and-carbonizing-the-earth-wise!

I mean, WWII had its share in causing AGW and the modern swimming regimen of the polar bears. There would have been a lot less damage to the earth if Churchill had decided NOT to fight the Nazis. Gore needs to pick his heroic references more carefully.

Yep, Al Gore’s teachings are similar to Hitler’s…

And both based on sound science!

Oops! That’s not what he meant! Scratch that.

Any culture that would give so much attention to the death of a pedophile like Michael Jackson, desrves a a psychotic like Al Gore.

There is a Churchill speech I heard in some documentary or maybe it was just a comment. But it was when they thought England would be invaded. He said something to the effect that even a housewife can grab a knife or a fork off the kitchen table and plunge it into the chest of the invading Hun.

Every hear of it before? I’d like to find it and prove to myself that I didn’t just dream it up.

.
When Churchill returned home after his “We shall fight them” speech his wife told him that she did not have a gun.
.
Winston responded, “My Dear there are knives in the pantry.”

WWII was not a debate on economic policy.

Not so sure about that.

The antagonism between the Allies and the Axis seems to have been involved mainly with resources and thus territory rather than simply the differences between political ideologies.

Also, France and Great Britain had already declared war on Germany for invading Poland, so attacking them was hardly out of the ordinary in that case. I don’t really think Germany was bent on ‘world domination’- Germany, Italy and Japan seem to have had pretty clear regional objectives. In fact, Hitler apparently had little interest in invading Britain and got sucked into Greece and the Balkans to bail out Mussolini.

Another thing is that we did not go to war because of the Holocaust. Judging by the many accounts of GIs when they first encountered the camps they were surprised and shocked by what they saw as if they never heard of any such things…the Holocaust was apparently a very well kept secret until the end of the war.

At any rate, the Nazis were overbearing arrogant SOBs and actually I equate bullies like Gore and the other extremists bent on forcing their nanny state, Big Brotherish ideologies on the country with Hitler or Stalin or any such despot. To people like Gore, what they espouse is simply not a point of view—it’s on the same footing as a religion and such types are dangerous to Liberty.

This country wasn’t meant to be run by extremists of any type.

Um, yes, it is like fighting the Nazis. ToL scrubbed the reference, perhaps because it was too hard to figure out who was playing the Nazis in this game. I vote for Gore and company.

“but political will is a renewable resource.”–Gore

He’s counting on that, recounting, and recounting the recount.

He’ll trademark the statement and begin taxing everyone’s political will.

But political will, like political capital, only goes so far. And Gore’s gone too far, counting on disciples to do his heavy work and lend him a fresh face.

What a joke, a college flunk-out guest lectures at Oxford. The British bastion of intellectual elitism has ever been cranking out neo-feudalism since Marx. But that they’ve sunk to Gore’s level lacking all scholarship other than self-referential corruption is their own folly.

Times are so hard that Oxford promotes “the world is flat” science, hoping to get in on the ground floor of Gore’s Warming Change and cash in on that renewable political will.

Next question: did Gore pay to address Oxford, or did Oxford pay for Gore to make his speach?

Final question: is Gore paying Oxford to dedicate a green science school in his honor?

“Jews are recyclable bio-fuel” Al Gore.

I think he needs to show what data he has seen to set him off like this. In his day was the solar maximum which is an extra active solar cycle which affected all planets, not just this one. Well, that period has been over and we are now in solar minimum and a very quiet solar cycle, actually the second quietest we’ve ever seen. Gore is going off on some old NASA data (he was a big NASA fan in the 80’s during Solar Max) and well, all of this is spinning wheels when we could be doing something like figuring how to get our factories back in this country, thumb our nose at China and create some damn jobs.

The Times of London has now scrubbed all of the references to “Nazi” from its article at the link. Simon at Deceiver wonders “who got to them.”

ToL is a Newscorp rag. The Code Red had to have come from the old man himself.

Someone on this site referred to him as Gorquemada. I can’t think of a more fitting moniker. Before this is over, he will be waterboarding scientists who are still skeptical.

Al Gore- He can’t raise his kids to be decent human beings but he does raise my blood pressure everytime he rants on about this faux-crisis crap.
