The U.S. put on a halo of global citizenship in joining the OAS to condemn Honduras for its “coup.” But it was an ill-advised move that will undercut American interests and democracy. Advantage: Hugo Chavez.

Message is dated February 28, 2008 from Reyes to the FARC Secretariat. The message relates a recent conversation that took place at a leftist conference between an official of Ecuadoran President Correa and individuals confident enough to speak for the Obama campaign.

Here is the last paragraph of the message:

Los gringos, pidieron cita con el ministro para solicitarle nos comunicara su interés en conversar varios temas. Dicen que el nuevo presidente de su país será Obama y que ellos están interesados en sus compatriotas. Obama no apoyará plan Colombia ni firma del TLC. Aquí respondimos que nos interesan las relaciones con todos los gobiernos en igualdad de condiciones y que en el caso de Estados Unidos, se requiere de un pronunciamiento público expresando su interés en conversar con las FARC dada su eterna guerra contra nosotros.

Translation:

The gringos asked for an appointment with the minister to request that he communicate to us their interest in discussing several topics. They say that the new president of their country will be Obama and that they are interested in their countrymen. Obama will not support either Plan Colombia or the free trade agreement [with Colombia.] We have responded that we are interested in relations with any government under the same conditions, and in the case of the United States, this would require a public statement expressing interest in talking with the FARC, given their eternal war against us.

Previously undisclosed documents, fruits of the Colombian military’s raid on a Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (a.k.a. FARC) camp in Ecuador in 2008, came into my hands last week.

The FARC’s second in command, Raúl Reyes, was killed in that raid. But he left behind laptop computers containing correspondence detailing a cozy relationship not only with Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez but also — the fresh documents reveal — with the government of Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa.

Someone should tell the White House. Ten days ago, President Obama called Mr. Correa to, according to a spokesman, “congratulate him on his recent re-election.” Mr. Obama also wanted to “express his desire to deepen our bilateral relationship and to maintain an ongoing dialogue that can ensure a productive relationship based on mutual respect.”

unconfirmed… but fully plausible. I have read in other places that pro-Zelaya marchers are usually foreigners or “paid” protesters. Its obvious that this was a stunt to provoke a confrontation. They are lucky that the military did not bite at the provocation. Just compare the actions of this “peaceful” military and the Revolutionary Guard in Iran with their protesters.

Giving a thug legitimacy is NOT the way to run foreign policy.

No doubt about it, the Obama Adminsitration will stop at nothing to make sure Zelaya gets to force his way back into Honduras and we will recognize Zelaya as the sole legitimate “leader” of Honduras.

I still think Chavez has to try fomenting something, he can’t crawl out of this with an obvious loss or his prestige at home as well as in Latam is in more trouble than he wants to absorb.
