Ready for EnviroCops?

posted at 7:22 pm on July 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Whether the British public is ready or not, here come the EnviroCops.  The Times of London reports that simply selling carbon credits hasn’t been enough to keep companies from potentially violating carbon-emissions limits.  Now they will send green-jacketed police to monitor their operations:

The agency is creating a unit of about 50 auditors and inspectors, complete with warrant cards and the power to search company premises to enforce the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), which comes into effect next year.

Decked out in green jackets, the enforcers will be able to demand access to company property, view power meters, call up electricity and gas bills and examine carbon-trading records for an estimated 6,000 British businesses. Ed Mitchell, head of business performance and regulation at the Environment Agency, said the squad would help to bring emissions under control. “Climate change and CO2 are the world’s biggest issues right now. The Carbon Reduction Commitment is one of the ways in which Britain is responding.”

The formation of the green police overcomes a psychological hurdle in the battle against climate change. Ministers have long recognised the need to have new categories of taxes and criminal offences for CO2 emissions, but fear a repetition of the fuel tax protests in 2000 when lorry drivers blockaded refineries.

The central unit, based in Warrington, Cheshire, can call on the agency’s national network of hundreds of pollution inspectors, many of whom will soon be trained in CO2 monitoring.

It will also be able to demand energy bills from utilities without the companies under investigation knowing they are being watched.

Of course, the British authorities do not have a Fourth Amendment to limit them, but even this may be a bit much for Brits to swallow.  Green-jacketed inspectors can descend on any business at any time and demand access to facilities.  They can look up utility bills without even informing the business.  Not for nothing did George Orwell set 1984 in Great Britain.

How long after we pass cap-and-trade will the US see the arrival of green-jacketed EnviroCops?  Probably more quickly than the British did.  The entire point of cap-and-trade is to punish those who dare release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and slapping an artificial-shortage system on an almost unmeasurable process will guarantee fraud as well as genuine lack of capability for compliance.  Fines will accrue even more revenue to the federal government.  The big question is whether Congress will bother adhering to our Fourth Amendment, or simply stick with the British invasion-of-privacy plan for better “efficiency”.

Michelle says now is the time to stop cap-and-tax, and she has the numbers to call in the Senate.

Is this really the wisest course of action? This is not like amnesty which could hardly be reversed, so maybe it would be the most prudent to give the fascist control freaks enough rope to hang themselves.

They’ll probably have to create a whole new department for the Enviro cops and will most likely include the Thought Control Police; the Speech and Writing Control Agency; the Gun Control Administration; and, the Socialized Medicine Institute within the same department. Via RedState Steve Pearce (R-NM) is running for Teague’s House seat:

New Mexico Democrat Harry Teague’s decision to vote in favor of cap-and-trade energy legislation has guaranteed that he’ll be facing a frontline Republican opponent in 2010.

Former New Mexico congressman Steve Pearce told POLITICO today that he is running for his old House seat – primarily because of Teague’s vote on the energy bill. Pearce had been preparing to run for governor, but said Teague’s vote forced him to rethink his priorities.

“The cap-and-trade vote [from Teague] is the thing that put my decision over the hump,” Pearce said in an interview with POLITICO. “I was absolutely stunned over his vote. When he made the cap-and-trade vote, the hostility in the district was reflected in the way we feel out here. There are 23,000 statewide jobs in the oil and gas industry – and if this bill is passed, this will kill many of those jobs.”

INC on July 6, 2009 at 7:49 PM

AND here’s Politico’s UPDATE on Teague:

A local businessman from Teague’s district reports that the congressman received a hostile reception at a town hall meeting over the July 4 recess:

When pressed about whether [Teague] had read and understood all 1,300 pages of the bill and all the provisions it contained, he said, “I have staff people to do that for me.” When asked why he would vote for a bill that would tax every American an additional $3,000-plus a year, he answered, “It is really only about the amount of a postage stamp.”

The citizens present seemed to have difficulty getting their arms around that answer.

…One question that did get an answer was, since he had voted for legislation that would provide tax dollars to fight global warming, did he believe in global warming? His answer was, “I don’t know if I believe in it or not. I am not a scientist.”

Congressman Teague was also asked, if the cap-and-trade bill were put to a public vote in his district, did he believe the majority of the citizens would vote for it? He answered, “I believe they would.” This answer brought a resounding “NOOOO!” from the crowd.

Too far fetched???
I don’t think so. It’s about saving the planet and all of mankind. What could be a greater cause than that??
If 100,000 must die to save the planet,, is that too high a price?? 500,000? 5 million? 20 million?
People have committed far greater atrocities for far lesser causes. We are either on the edge of a great awakening and a renewal of the yearning for freedom, liberty and truth,,, or we are on the verge of a complete collapse of western society followed by a return to a new dark age.
It has to be one of the two. Lies and insanity of this magnitude cannot co exist with freedom and truth.

Americannodash on July 6, 2009 at 9:18 PM

the reason he became interested in global warming in the first place is because he recognized how much hotter it was getting at his home in Sedona, Ariz. –Michelle Milken.

I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I read that. I lived in Arizona and had to move because it was so hot. I think McCain’s brain has been cooked. They cannot predict the weather more than two weeks. The liberals have labeled us anti-environment as they have labeled us raciest. Liberals are the raciest and conservatives are color blind. The truth is Conservatives are just as pro-environment as anyone else but we don’t want to eliminate humans to improve the environment. Humans are part of environment also. The most compelling argument is that we have removed carbon that was trapped in the earth as oil and coal and released it into the atmosphere. The numbers they use to account for all carbon emissions is very subjective. Insects, Volcanoes, and other natural sources are not fully taken into effect. The earth naturally attempts to balance it self. More CO2 would be benefit for plants. The cause of global warming and cooling is still unknown. History shows wide variations in earth temperature before humans could have any effect. I my self suspect the sun will be the criminal responsible for this. Cap and Trade is one of the mosts dangerous pieces of legislation there is. It is Global redistribution of wealth . It would not surprising me if a UN force of Green helmets was in the works down the road. Al Gore should be made to eat his vomit words. Liberals want to control every thing except mountain lions eating your kids. Having said that, protecting and improving the environment in a intelligent manner makes sense. A good idea that should be championed by conservatives is the Bio-Char projects being developed. Bio-Char is a win-win. Carbon is sequestered, giving 20% improvement in plant growth, and by product production of Bio-oil and methane gas.

I’d avoid Westminster Abbey from now on. All that grave spinning of long-dead English free men and patriots is liable to make its foundation insecure. But then, the entire country seems to be crumbling to dust even as we watch. Sad.

My sign at the impromptu Tea Party the day after the House passed Waxman-Markey:

“LIBERTY GIVES ME ENERGY

DON’T TAX IT!”

I fully expect that the day will come when they attach a meter to our anus and fine us for farting too much.

In that case my friend, I am in deep doo doo.

Also, does anyone else with a soft spot for our friends in the Anglosphere find it horribly depressing to see the Brits descend into tyranny like this? Ever think it could happen? Where does it end? Can they claw their way back from the brink, or has the loss of private arms made that impossible? (And no, I’m not suggesting violence, but you have to admit that an armed populace is a powerful deterrent to would-be tyrants.)

I wonder how they figure out how many tons of CO2 I emit per year. Like, how do they do that? Methinks its hogwash.

fullogas on July 6, 2009 at 11:12 PM

How much CO2 results in burning a car tire??

Every day I mean??

I can’t believe I just read that. Cops being retasked to be carbon police instead of catching street thugs, drug traffikers, terrorists etc and then being underfunded at that.

It just gets worse everyday.

Burn a log in the fireplace, get fined. I can see it now!
