Obama, the reverse Reagan

Barack Obama won office by promising middle-class tax cuts, but spends money like no one since FDR and LBJ. At some point, those two actions become mutually exclusive. Fred Hiatt at the Washington Post concludes that Obama is doing a reverse Ronald Reagan, building an ironclad excuse for massive, across-the-board tax hikes in much the same way Reagan thought he had trapped government into spending less:
Since the Reagan era, some conservatives have hoped to shrink government by “starving the beast.” Refuse to raise taxes, they figured, and eventually spending would have to fall.
It’s beginning to look as though the new team may have a similar strategy, in reverse: Increase spending, and eventually taxes will have to be raised. …
The bottom line is this: You cannot run a progressive government of the kind Obama favors by collecting only 18 percent of the gross domestic product in taxes, which has been the norm over the past 40 years. Nor can you increase the tax take to 24.5 percent of GDP — which is what Obama proposes to be spending in 2019 — simply by making the rich pay more.
But rather than level with the American people about this, or lay out a plan to raise the needed taxes, the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress are putting the spending pieces of progressive government in place and apparently counting on the tax piece to fall into place later.
It depends on the definition of “rich,” which first became an issue during the Obama campaign. They floated out a series of numbers — $150K, $200K, and once even $75K — before settling on the more viable $250,000 cutoff. The White House can simply start defining “rich” downwards again, which may not be completely unsupportable in this economy anyway.
Regardless, though, Hiatt argues exactly what I’ve been writing for the last several months. Obama first wants to create massive spending programs, including new entitlements, and then deliver the pricetag once they’re in place. Obama understands that government programs don’t easily get canceled once they start delivering benefits to people; Europe could spend years describing their own problems in dismantling the nanny-states they created. By the time the middle class discovers they’ve been hoodwinked, the bill will already be due, and Obama & Co won’t allow a dine-and-dash.
Reagan tried cutting taxes to force government reform. Obama will massively expand government in order to impose broad tax increases across the nation. In the end, Obama will probably have less success than Reagan, as the American taxpayers will toss Obama and his Democrats out of office — but that will leave the problems to the Republicans, who will then have to deal with the media highlighting anecotal sob stories of people in the programs needing to get cut and accusing the fiscally responsible of heartlessness. Had the media done their jobs and explained this two years ago, or even one year ago, we wouldn’t be in that position, and right now, that looks like a best-case scenario.

Bobby Jindal will be used to this one if he gets elected.
He took over the LA Department of Health and Hospitals in the mid-90s and found that it had been massively expanded to the point where it was insolvent and needed to have services cut back in order to stay afloat.
He had to make a bunch of tough choices as a result and was able to balance the budget, but there were a LOT of people pissed off at him long-term as a result because he shut down their pet projects such as a clinic for a particular small community.

By rushing through all of the spending programs and increases, Obama is going to tie the hands of his GOP opponent in 2012.
A GOP candidate will not be able to credibly call for tax cuts because the bills are too high and have to be paid for. By 2012, it will be too late to call for a repeal of Stimulus because the money will have finally been dispersed.
If ObamaCare gets passed, the GOP candidate can only talk about fixing it or reducing the costs of it, but not credibly about ending it.

Maybe they will use the specter of global warming to impose a carbon tax, and the specter of uninsured to impose a health care tax, and by adding these two curve balls to the mix, ala FDR and social security, people would be stupid enough to not notice that all the tax money goes to the same place. Oh, wait……

Since we’re all resigned to the fact that taxes will be going up, the questions now are:
1) Which income brackets will see higher taxes? Is 75 grand the cutoff? Or would he go lower? Is that per household or individual?
2) Will he allow the Bush tax cuts to expire for everyone or just the upper income earners?
3) Exactly how high will he raise taxes? We know the top bracket will pay at least 39.6% based on his campaign rhetoric, but would he try to increase them even higher?
And this isn’t even factoring in crap-and-trade. Good Lord, we’re screwed!
Doughboy on July 6, 2009 at 11:31 AM
The media-entertainment complex tip the scales and make it impossible to limit the size and scope of the Federal Government. Even if Republicans can win in 2010 and 2012, government will still grow, and then Democrats will win again, and the pace will pick up. We are headed for an economic trainwreck.
Now that I’ve depressed myself — what’s for lunch?

All you have to do to see where Obama would like to take the country is look at the demography of his state senate district in Chicago: 20% on welfare, 75% working poor and lower middle class all ruled over by a 5% kleptocracy. Who are the rich? His answer to Rick Warren is as revealing as his share the wealth comment to Joe the Plumber. He said $75k that’s who the rich are in Obama’s mind.
jerryofva on July 6, 2009 at 11:32 AM
This is why we must attack now, 2012 will be too late. The 2010 elections will have to be the brick wall that Obama cannot break through. Don’t act like everything that Obama wants is a done deal. If you do then we might as well all move to Canada.

Of course. Because if they kept the American people in the loop on this and admitted a crippling tax hike was not only on the horizon but on a collision course, the Dem Congress would find themselves out on their butts faster than you could say “2010,” and Obama would be pretty much marginalized.
No one, and I mean no one can admit to a policy of tax hikes and not be comitting political scuicide.

Correct as far as it goes, but the interesting part is the attempt at stealth tax increases through the public option and cap and trade. The income tax changes are really for wealth redistribution. Cap and trade, green energy and health care reform are about raising revenues. They hope people won’t blame them for tax increases when the taxes are hidden in the cost of everything they buy.

The flaw in your plan? Thinking the Republicans will do anything to cut spending. They are easy to bully around and are motivated by that one over riding concern all politicians have….getting reelected. They load just as much pork into bills and until the American people reverse their entitlement thinking and continue to shirk their personal responsibilties, i.e., it’s easier to have government make those decisions, there will be no change.
We can sit around and rant and rave and blame big government but unless you really vote these folks out of office, well you are getting exactly what you paid for.

bluelightbrigade on July 6, 2009 at 11:52 AM
The reverse Reagan? I think you mean the anti-Reagan. There is a difference.
For example, Ronald Reagan even at the height of his power never ever dismissed critics with a sneer and a “I won” comment. Ronald Reagan’s ideas came forth out of years of thought about conservatism while Obama gets his ideas seconds before they flash up on the teleprompter. Ronald Reagan wasn’t afraid to take on despotic regimes while Obama apologizes to them and ignores human rights abuses.
In short, the filthy lying dictator in the White House isn’t a reversal of Ronald Reagan he is the antithesis of all that Reagan stood for. We’ve gone from “morning again in America” optimism to this corrupt regime and its oppressive overspending without any checks from Congressional Democrats who unthinkingly and unconcernedly approve whateve is proposed by the bastard in the White House or criminals like Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd.
It is no longer morning in America but after midnight on a snowy winter’s night.

- People not buying and selling stocks don’t pay taxes (this was how Clinton cut the debt – all the capital gains taxes made as the stock market zoomed to internet bubble levels).

This is why conservatives lose.
Where did $250k come from? It came from Bill Clinton’s “millionaire tax”
Al Gore in 2000, said that anyone who makes “250,000 in a year” is a millionaire in 4 years, so the tax should be extended to them as well.
So, now, conservatives say “well, $250k is a good cut off”
So, now, Ed you are Al Gore. Happy?
lorien1973 on July 6, 2009 at 12:12 PM
The income will be roughly $50,000/year. That is the median income for America, and if you can get 50% of the people on your side chances are you will win. I would say it might go lower depending on what the urban area income is. He might just be counting on the poor to keep him in office and hose everyone else.
He will let it expire for everyone. The media has convinced the sheeple that Bush only lowered taxes on rich people so when they do expire the poor will think that would be an awesome way to stick it to the rich.
In order to pay for everything or at least float the debt it would need to be around 50% across the board. While this is high it is doable because of his base. The poor will be fine with it because it won’t affect them. The socialists will be fine with it because it is exactly what they want. All he needs to do is keep some of the white vote and most of the hispanic vote and he is good to go.

You’re probably right on that point – the MSM had been so successful in 1) crucifying GWB, and 2) making McCain = 3d GWB term, plus the fact that McCain was simply a horrendous candidate running a horrendous campaign, plus the “ain’t it soooooooooooooo kewl to vote for teh black guy” factor, and McCain was doomed from the start.
BUT remember – Liberals avoid the term “liberal” like the plague, because the American people are still smart enough to know what “liberal” really means. That’s why they’re trying their darndest to repackage themselves as “progressives” because that term hasn’t been tied to massive tax hikes – yet. And this is where the 2010 elections become so crucial. If the Dems can sucessfully paint themselves as still the de-facto minority like they did this past election, then we’re truly in deep doo-doo. But I don’t think even the MSM will be able to block the fact that they own it all now.
That’s why I’m not too upset with the Frankin win. They have no excuses, and nobody to blame. They’ll overreach and get smacked down.

But… that strategy needs momentum. If the national GOP were smart they would stop trying to undermine candidates like Rubio and Toomey and focus on Nevada. If they can unseat Harry Reid then the rest of Democrats in the Senate will be become much more pliable.
