Baton Rouge Independence Day Tea Party, UDPATED

posted at 9:42 am on July 6, 2009 by Laura Curtis

The Baton Rouge Tea Party folks did a fabulous job on the Independence Day Rally. In spite of the brain-melting heat there was a turnout of around 500 people, according to an unofficial police estimate. Meaning I asked a cop and he took a wild guess. There wasn’t a good angle to get the entire crowd, but here are a few photos so you can judge the crowd size for yourselves.  About 40 yards down from the steps was another crowd of 75-100 people in a grassy area with shade.  There were also some pretty good signs.

One of the first speakers was a woman who lived in Cuba when Castro took power. She gave a very sobering talk about parallels between what happened in Cuba and what’s happening here today. Other speakers covered cap-and-tax, health care reform (with a nice plug for Cato), and a heads up on how to get free activist training so we can be more effective rabblerousers.

The GOP was attempting to recruit and failing miserably.  What do you make of that?

Update: Shocking – or, not really so shocking, but it should be – the Baton Rouge news outlets did not report on this gathering, even though at least one station was there. As of this writing, the only news on the web for this tea party is this post.

Imagine, for a moment, 500 anti-war activists going unreported. Or 500 illegal alien advocates.  It would never happen.

Well.  They can ignore us, but we won’t go away.  To the contrary, I received an email with info for a protest in about six weeks.  I’ll be there.

The state run media is doing everything in its power to shield its messiah and further his Marxist/communist agendas. This country is very sick.

Same thing here in Brunswick, Georgia, on the southern coast. We had around 700 people attend our Tea Party yet not a word was written in the local newspaper. Typical, since it’s only use is as bird-cage liner.

About 3,000-4,000 in San Antonio despite the heat. No press there.

Imagine, for a moment, 500 anti-war activists going unreported.

The only reason it would go unreported would be because the reporter would be too busy organizing the event to report on it!

I attended a tea party in Florida with 3500 in attendance on 7/02 (a Thursday nite) – it was awesome and it was 100 degrees. Everyone knew there were only 50 states and no one said we were not a Christian nation. Fascinating!!

Will be there in DC on 9/11 too for the BIG protest – I am tired of being ignored – Obama and his so-called policies must be taken DOWN. The media won’t be able to ignore that one.

Ris4victory on July 6, 2009 at 9:48 AM

When Fox News covered the tax day tea parties with zeal, the talking point became Fox News created the tea parties.

Not much excuse for local news not covering it, but I’m kind of glad that Fox News didn’t overtly participate.

At how many lefty rallies do they do these things?

1. sing the National Anthem
2. recite the Pledge of Allegiance
3. Pray as a group for America
4. sing God Bless America
5. recite passages from the Declaration of Independence

I could go on and on, but you get the idea – pride of COUNTRY in an upbeat & organized fashion dominates the theme at the tea protests, not hate and screaming and acting like fools.

It sounds as though there were some good tea parties around on the 4th. I’m sorry the media ignored them again. I was afraid the day itself was sort of a bad choice, and I didn’t see a lot of chatter about them beforehand.

35,000 (yes, 35K) in Dallas. Yet the Dallas Morning News originally reported the turnout was light. I noticed this morning they pulled the original story and now are reporting the right numbers. In addition, there were TV trucks everywhere but barely a mention of the event (if that) on news broadcasts. It is truly INCREDIBLE how the MSM molds the news to fit their ideology. I keep thinking they can’t possibly get any more blatant in their slant, and then they do.

The MSM is crumbling. If all they rely on for funding is the federal govt. they will be in for a rude awakening. Just as the newspapers are falling one by one, your local affiliate is probably having trouble as well. These are business founded on capitalism. They will not exist if commercial advertisers pull the rug out. The irony will be that many of the FOX stations will be here and they won’t. This is why so many people are afraid of Sarah.

We had about 500 on July 4 in Morgan County, Alabama. No report of the event that I’ve seen even though the local radio host for Huntsville and a state senator were there. A reporter that a friend of mine knows from The Decatur Daily (a left-leaning newspaper) told my friend prior to the Tea Party that he hoped no one would show up. This movement will continue to be ignored until we get as aggressive as the left gets.

KickandSwimMom on July 6, 2009 at 10:07 AM

great showing… Raleigh, NC had a successful Independence Day Tea Party, too. Between 1500-2000 showed up for the tea party, during the course of the day. Not all stayed the entire afternoon, but they stayed long enough to register with various grassroots organizations to begin to fight for, or against, the issues that were important to them. Photos are being posted at http://www.ncteapartyrevolution.com
Videos of all the speakers will be added this week, as time permits.
The next big step for North Carolina, is to try to get 10,000 people to DC for the 9/12 March and Tea Party event in September.

I was at the downtown H-Town(that’s Houston for the non-Texan) tea party. Despite the insane heat, there had to be at least a couple thousand people there. And I only stayed for the first half, so there may have been more arriving late.

I saw local newsvans along with a helicopter hovering above us, so the Houston press was at least covering this(to what extent I’m not certain). But the blackout throughout the national media is pathetic. Hell, at least the Tax Day Tea Parties got derogatory coverage. I’ll settle for that over nothing.

It sounds like the only way the drive-bys will ever wake and realize this is not just a bunch of “racist teabaggers” as that dude Johnny Garafolo insinuates is to organize a march on DC and/or turn this movement into an electoral bloodbath next November. The GOP gaining 50+ seats in the House ala 1994 would be pretty hard to ignore.

BR native here and we noticed this lack of coverage around my household… the only time we saw any coverage of it was when we had the local NBC affiliate’s news while out for dinner.

(The NBC affiliate here has had virtually no news department for years, as the ABC and CBS affiliates own the audience for news here.)

teke184 on July 6, 2009 at 10:37 AM

About 200 here in Lincoln, NE, from what I could tell. The local ABC affiliate showed up, shot some film, and interviewed a couple of peeps. No idea if it ran on TV or if the paper covered it. At our April 13 tea party, which attracted around 400 people, the local paper estimated around 150, so I had no desire to see if they covered this one (much less cover it accurately or objectively.)

We sang the anthem, recited the Pledge, sang God Bless America, and listened to various speakers — a local pastor, a Nebraska businessman, war vets and local activists — all of whom were well-spoken, succinct and direct in their comments. Plenty of signs, including the above-mentioned ‘Chains we can believe in.’

Laura – I am originally from BR. Glad you are bringing this to the light.

BUT
we need to do better informing the media the event is going to take place. This event was not on the Advocate, WAFB or WBRZ calendar of events.

Yes, the news people should be news people and find the story, but they don’t.

If you want the news on the air, go see them two weeks in advance. Email them WRITTEN background information. Prep them a few days before the event. Give them special “credentials”, parking and easy access. Know their deadlines. And if it is in Print, Pre-write the story and make a few additions IMMEDIATELY after the event and email them high quality pictures.

All news is now packaged, except the investigative stuff. With cutbacks, 75% of what you read that is local are press releases with a lunch or phone follow-up.

It is time we learn from ACORN!

The GOP was attempting to recruit and failing miserably. What do you make of that?

It tells me that the conservatives base is not ready to forgive and forget just yet. Especially after the Crap-and-Betrayed Eight helped the House pass the largest tax increase in history.

I think the GOP will be able to make amends with a lot conservatives between now and the midterms. But it’s gonna require the party heads to start backing candidates like Rubio and Toomey and quit offering up the same tired old RINOs who will sell us out the first chance they get.

They also need to swallow their pride and get out of Sarah Palin’s way. Let her become the public face of the party and the national leader of the conservative revolution.

Best of all the organizers are compiling a list of companies that condone or encourage the liberal agenda. BTW Michelle is even more beautiful in person! (I am woman and not embarrassed to say that!) :)

Local media, especially small town papers, are usually looking for stories to report. Call your local paper before events and let them know what’s going on, or send an e-mail to the local beat reporter. They appriciate the tips and will be more likely to give you a fair shake than the bigger media.

forest on July 6, 2009 at 11:17 AM

Forgot to add that I wanted to pass on this poem. A friend sent it to me right before the tea party:

AWAKEN

One Man awake,
Awakens another.
The second awakens
His next-door brother.
The three awake can rouse a town
By turning
The whole place
Upside down.

The many awake
Can make such a fuss
It finally awakens
The rest of us.
One man up,
With dawn in his eyes,
Surely then,
Multiplies.

– Lawrence Tribble

barnone on July 6, 2009 at 10:47

If you want the news on the air, go see them two weeks in advance.

BRZ was there, with a camera. Next time there’s a protest, I’m going to take pictures of all the news organizations that are there, and splash that all over the web – with links to their non-coverage.

Laura on July 6, 2009 at 11:19 AM

I wonder when they will start doing this? IMO it’s already much too late. All they do is trash Democrats and then hope for the best. It’s not going to happen for them because the Democrats do a much better job of trashing the opposition.

Once again in 2010, the GOP will not know what hit them. And it’s nobody else’s fault.

jay12 on July 6, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Nah, it’s nowhere near too late. In fact, I’d argue it’s too early. The GOP can’t do anything right now aside from oppose what the Dems are doing. They don’t have the numbers to stop any of it if the Dems are united.

The key right now is to be vocal in their opposition and to prevent as many defections(the Porkulus Three, the Cap-and-Tax Eight) as possible. Next year when the midterms are approaching, that’s when they need to offer up effective candidates for office who can articulate conservative alternatives.

Aggie85, I was manning the camera on her right (the profile shot) and I can assure you from a male perspective; she is indeed more beautiful in person. Never manned a big form camera before, but she made it REAL easy to look good doing it :))

The Central OR Tea Party was (I’m told) the largest in OR at 1200 people. I haven’t found any media coverage from anywhere in OR yet.

Geez, you’d think we’re Code Pink. Will we start interrupting Congress sessions or something now? Oh, wait, we’re too civil.

You did a great job with the camera!

Aggie85 on July 6, 2009 at 11:29 AM

The Boise Tea Party was more of a 4th BBQ with hamburgers and hot dogs. We had about 300 at any time over the 4 hours. We also got zero media.

JIMV on July 6, 2009 at 11:36 AM

My husband and I attended the Boston Tea Party that started at the Common at noon, then moved down to Columbus Park on the Harbor, close to site of the original Tea Party. Hard to tell, but we guess-timate that about 500 people attended – lots of enthusiasm, good speakers, petitionss to sign. We searched the Boston Globe for any mention, and not surprisingly, there was NONE. We were on line at Starbucks to get an ice tea and had our “Don’t Tread on Me” flag hanging out of our backpack. The woman behind us in line asked, “Is that some sort of political group?” We explained that we were attending the tea party and that this flag has its roots in revolutionary times. She had NO IDEA what a tea party even was…she said she’s from Baltimore, “a very Democratic town”….and that she believes that government’s job is just to tax and spend. We tried in the short time we had to “set her straight”, but clearly for some it’s hopeless.

I got into a disagreement with a Seattle fellow, not the brightest bulb in the firmament, who sanctimoniously advised that the Washington state Tea parties resulted in 40-60 lemmings in Olympia. I fed him the dozen towns that had events, all of which he denied, some photo’s from the 500 or so who turned out in Bellingham, and then news and crowd reports from Olympia, where they had around 1500.

When I last checked into the forum, he was still in denial and waiting for the official DNC fax laundered through his leftist approved media. Till then all reports were ‘lies’…

JIMV on July 6, 2009 at 11:43 AM

Now here’s how it’s done: The Advertiser reported on the Lafayette tea party. They also mentioned some other Louisiana tea parties that did not get covered.

Laura on July 6, 2009 at 11:49 AM

We had a tea party in Greensboro GA. I would guess around 200 people attended. The organizers did a great job. There were reporters there from Athens, GA. It did make the paper.

I am not sure if this link will work. I tried.

builderswife on July 6, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Being present at the party is the same as admitting guilt to being an accomplice to aidding and abetting in conspiracy to destroying the United States of America.

Hope and Change in a new light that they refuse to see.

We had about 70-100 in Nanuet, NY (Rockland County just north of NYC) and there was another not too far from there (New City, NY) but I don’t have numbers on that one. The local newspaper covered both events with some pics. The event we attended was from 12-4 and people were coming and going so its hard to say how many actually attended, but not more than 100 I think. We were at a small park near a busy intersection and there were a lot of supportive horn honkers. The only sign up attempt was a petition for Ron Paul’s bill to audit the Fed, which many people signed. I am unable to find any press coverage of the NYC event (7/1) or events in Albany, the state capitol, in their papers (i.e., NYT, Daily News, Post), although there are blogs reporting on them.

I will be at the activist training you linked to above. I hope to meet you there. I will help you email those pictures to all my BR contacts.

The Media will avoid us, however, the choice to have tea parties in competition with the fourth was a poor decision based on emotion and not strategy.

Ed Graef on July 6, 2009 at 12:11 PM

What 4th competition? Except for the fireworks, there was no other news. No politics, limited sports, no business.

The media had nothing else to cover.

I’m thinking about going.

For Steamers in other states, that training is taking place over the next few weeks in Punta Gorda (7/9), Sarasota (7/10), Richmond, Denver and Tampa (7/11), San Antonio (7/18), Baton Rouge (7/22), Dallas (7/23). It’s free, including a free lunch, and

Some of the event topics include:
· Building Coalitions, Reaching Your Community, and Organizing Meaningful Events
· Holding Your Elected Officials Accountable
· Getting Involved in State and Local Political Campaigns
· New Media: Op-Eds, Blogs, Wikipedia Projects and more

The topics look interesting but I think the schmooze factor would be even more valuable – hooking up with like-minded people who are willing to take a day off of work in order to get more involved politically. The org putting it on is part of the Sam Adams Alliance.

There was a big rally in the St. Louis area, in Washington, Mo. You wouldn’t know it happened by reading the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Its headline this morning was about a tattoo parlor opening in downtown.
