Ace’s “special comment” on Palinistas

posted at 2:15 pm on July 6, 2009 by Karl

Edited only slightly, so there will be some profanity:

It’s this insane idea that if you want something to happen, you will also of course agree that it will happen, and if you don’t agree it will happen, obviously you don’t want it to happen.

In other words, if you’re cheering for one side, you must of course believe that side will win, and if you suggest our side won’t win, well, gee, you must be cheering against us.

It’s insane. I wanted the Giants to win against the Eagles in the playoffs, but I predicted they’d lose, because the Eagles had their number and they were coming apart at the seams. They did lose, for the reasons I guessed (I think). That did not mean I wasn’t “on their side,” I’ve been on the Giants’ side all my life.

But there is a mentality in the nutroots that if you dare to post a poll showing Republicans down and say “we’re in trouble, we need a game-changer,” well, that means you’re secretly rooting against our side.

And if you say that Fred Thompson isn’t catching on as hoped, well, you hate Fred Thomson.

And if you do not believe that Sarah Palin has some double-secret probation plan for the presidency, you must hate her too, and you’re rooting against her, and cheering for the other side.

This is fucking insane and it must stop. I will not be bullied by this ludicrous magical thinking brigade who insists that only Nice and Positive Words must be uttered or else one is contributing one’s Evil Energy to the Wrong Side.

It’s insane.

I disagree with you. I have tried to do so pleasantly but I am tired of the imputation of bad motive simply because I am more realistic and less prone to flights of hopeful fancy than you.

If you think I’m wrong, say so. I do not mind being called wrong. I do, however, greatly mind being called a traitor, of harboring a secret agenda I hide from you in order to advance the MSM’s interests, etc., and all the rest of this insane bullshit.

Someone can be wrong honestly, without the need of claiming he’s wrong dishonestly, wrong because he’s actively intending to subvert the cause (so he can of course get invited to these famous DC dinner parties, etc.)

Stop jumping to claim some one is not just wrong but actively malicious.

It’s insane. It’s fruit fucking loops. and it’s tiresome.

And I do think I am taking off the week. You guys only seem to want to talk about Sarah Palin and furthermore you only want to hear the same thing — she’s running, this is a great move, she’s now perfectly poised for the race, etc.

It’s nonsense. And I hardly need to blog about it, because you all seem to know the words to the song. So you don’t need me as part of the chorus. You can sing the same words well enough without me.

I am really tired of this relentless nonsense and occasional nastiness whenever someone is believed to have departed from the conservativey correct line.

To anticipate some of the responses that comments like this have already generated, for the purpose of this discussion, I really do not care what Ace wrote about Palin’s resignation, any more than I care about what Ed Morrissey wrote about it, any more than I care about the advice Jonah Goldberg was offering Palin before her announcement. I can disagree with any part or all of their opinions without irrationally jumping to the conclusion that they hate Palin, or have thrown in their lot with David Frum and Colin Powell.

Indeed, I can point out what I think are some of the flaws in Goldberg’s piece. He overstates how much Palin has been out of Alaska since the election, while understating the degree to which her profile these days has been dictated by David Letterman, Vanity Fair’s Todd Purdum, and disgruntled McCain campaign officials dragging her (and her daughters) into the spotlight. But consider some of the over-the-top reactions against Goldberg’s writing and person when the piece was linked here at HotAir (Obviously, not all of the critical comments were over-the-top, but if you read them all, you’ll find a fair number of them). To grasp how off-kilter some of the vitriol was, consider that Goldberg argued that Palin can match Romney’s ability to talk policy if she wants to, but Romney will never have Palin’s charisma. How that qualifies as heresy eludes me. The notion that Goldberg is somehow “blowing up the conservative movement” by stating his opinion also seems to impute to him influence far beyond that which he actually has (and I would say the same of Charles Krauthammer, let alone a handful of conservative bloggers).

As for her resignation, my analysis would be closer to that of Mark Halperin than Ace or Ed. But I can disagree with them on Palin’s future prospects while utterly agreeing with Ace’s comment about Palin’s most rabid supporters, who are probably doing her no favors. I suspect that some of the reasons the Left has a special loathing for Palin are the same reasons why some on the Right seem to have an absolutely blind love for her. Should she decide to run for president, the Left will likely enjoy the prospect of using her most devoted followers to highlight her most polarizing qualities.

Granted, the knee-jerk defense of Palin is also a product of the sheer volume and bile of the attacks on her from the Left. But the unfair attacks of the Left will not go away, so long as Palin remains in politics. Nor do those unfair attacks justify unfair attacks by Palin supporters against others on the Right who have supported Palin, or simply called the balls and strikes as they saw them. It is possible to be mistaken without being evil.

Finally, consider this from R. A. Mansour’s profile at Conservatives4Palin:

Make no mistake, the beating she took during the campaign was wounding. She’s not as confident as she once was. You can see it in the difference between her pre-campaign interviews and her post-campaign interviews. There’s a stuttering nervousness about her now. She’s trying to get back on her game.

That could be read more than one way. Presuming that Mansour did not intend to paint Palin as someone who can be beaten down by the likes of Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson, it suggests that Palin recognizes that she needs to raise her game to meet The Narrative likely to be built against her — should she seek a national leadership position. If so, Sarah Palin and Jonah Goldberg really are not all that far apart.

Addendum (Ed): Sarah Palin is not an issue.  Sarah Palin is not a political principle.  Sarah Palin is a politician.  If her supporters demand no criticism of a politician, they risk turning Palin and her supporters into nothing more than a cult of personality, the kind we derided with Barack Obama.  And it does our friends no favors if we see them going over a cliff and remain silent, or worse yet, cheer them to go faster.

I have only encountered dakine a few times. I thought dakine was a libertarian, supporting small government and strong defense, but opposed to social conservatism.

She was the only news phenomenon capable of knocking the Michael Jackson story off the cable news lineups.

For instance, as the story was breaking Friday, fellow panelists were pointing out, on the air, how stupid Mrs. Palin was to put forward her big story on a late Friday afternoon before a three-day holiday weekend. Everyone “knows” one buries a story that way. It became my grim duty to remind my interlocutors — in case they had not noticed — that all the cable news shows were dropping their programming to switch to wall-to-wall coverage of the Palin announcement and that we were, at that moment, telling a national audience that the story we were discussing was being buried. The story persisted and expanded over the weekend, and my guess would be that if any political topic came up at America’s millions of Fourth of July backyard barbecue parties — it probably was about Sarah Palin. So, who’s the fool?

What will she do when Chavez and dinnerjacket start insulting her kids on the foreign front while the dems and the media attack her on the domestic front?

csdeven on July 6, 2009 at 6:56 PM

Here’s a little exercise for you. Take any 10 of the last 1000 stories about Sara Palin or her family that you have read in the major media, watched on a major network, or seen blogged, and do a copy/paste to your word processor. Then do a “chage all” edit and change the words “Sara Palin” to “Barack Obama”, without any other edits or alterations. Then email the result to the office of the Secret Service, and see how long it takes for you to get a visit from some nice men in sunglasses.

Palin’s preemptive resignation is pissing Hillary off. Bill and Hill, with 50 years of experience behind them, got upstaged by that “dummy from Wasilla” whose 15 minutes of fame get recalibrated every 15 minutes like clockwork.

Now all the Hillbots want Hillary to resign.

Too funny.

Hill: Well which gun would we use this time?

Bill: Well Darlin’ Juantia, I mean Hillary, we still have our connections south of the border and we could blame it on some right wing nut job. Heck we could blame Palin.

MadisonConservative

I’ve been a longtime reader of Mr. Morrisey, and I remember his takes on various GOP ’scandals’:
Larry Craig: So what, hounded for exercising his liberty because he was a Republican.
Mark Vitter: So what, when are we gonna stop allowing Sunday school teachers to deprive us of winners?
Mark Sanford: So what, and even if he did misuse govt funds, he can always just pay it back…but now he’s sounding creepy…
Sarah Palin: I smell smoke, and there’s FIRE. she’s OVER!

And then there’s Allahpundit, who sees every Palin rally as just spawning more terrorists…I mean, Democrat voters…cause she “polarizes”

And Charles Krauthammer, who called McCain THE smartest, most serious thinking man in the Senate, whose bold move to suspend the campaign was futile but in no way erratic–this man finds Palin “not a serious candidate”

and Paul over at Powerline, who still says Palin was a total token pick…

I answer you because you seems sorta serious. Of course, it could be that there’s some scandal about to break over your head.

Time will tell.

Hell no. It would be a courageous act of defiance against the entrenched powers in smoke filled rooms inside the beltway. It would show that she had hutzpa, gravytas and America’s best interest at heart. It would be declared a valiant act of selfless bravery such as the world had never seen. Why it would require a willing suspension of disbelieve to say otherwise.

dakine on July 7, 2009 at 12:25 AM/blockquote>

I’ll say this, and it goes for every scum-sucking jerk like Obama as well…nobody with below average intelligence makes it to be the governor of a state. End of story. We like to tell ourselves this because maybe 100+ years ago, it was true. Not anymore. There’s 300 million people in this country, and 50 states. You don’t get to a position of power like that without being clever, educated, or both.

So your snide remarks about her intelligence are weak at best. I gather you’ll cite the Couric interview as evidence despite the fact she’d been coached for the damn thing and for the first time was forced not to speak her mind. That throws anyone off. You probably will also make remarks about her accent, which is exactly what liberals cited for the last eight years about Bush. I’ve yet to have heard a reasoned argument that challenges her mental capabilities.

Irish whiskey? Meh. Scotch. Single Malt. Straight up.

MadisonConservative on July 7, 2009 at 12:48 AM

I copy people quite a bit? How so?

atheling on July 7, 2009 at 12:48 AM

There is nothing wrong with honest and balanced criticism.

But it is extremely disingenuous for Ed or Allah or Ace to suggest that’s what they’ve done.

As I recall…the day Palin resigned, they posted that her career is over. It was a categorical and definitive response to what she did.

It did not discuss or consider what really happened and how Palin’s resigning is actually a sign that she’s going to fight, not surrender.

For anyone who doesn’t understand why that’s possible or who feel that because I appreciate Sarah Palin and I believe in what she stands for, I encourage you to read a series of posts over at FloppingAces.net called Perfecting Alinsky.

In these posts, you will see how the leftist had her in the perfect trap. She could not accomplish anything as governor. A great deal of her time was spent dealing with bogus ethics charges. She couldn’t help the people who’ve requested her services to campaign in the lower 48. She was limited by what she could do to stand up against these charges. The ones filing the charges did so ON THE TAXPAYER’S DIME, not their own. So it didn’t cost them a thing to destroy her and it cost her time and money, as well as cost the taxpayer’s money.

Her hands were almost literally tied behind her back.

Conservatives parroting the screed from the left that she “quit” and “abandoned her post” (btw, that’s the first clue they need to consider there’s more going on than meets the eye) should play things out as to what would have happened had she stayed.

Nothing else would have gotten done for the state. By the end of her term, she would have been a beleagered lame duck governor trying to help Parnell run on some pretty shabby coat tails. She herself would have been near bankruptcy if not completely bankrupt.

She would not have been able to campaign for conservatives running in 2010.

She would have been a hull of her former self. The only times we’d see her for the next few years would be when some other punk from the lower 48 took another pot shot at her. Any meager gains would be ignored. And THIS would make her more viable as a candidate?

Don’t you get it? They thought they had her contained! On the taxpayers dime! And she decided, like she said her her presser, that she was going to fight…not hunker down and take it.

In doing so, she’s preserved her policies in Alaska. Parnell will not be running as a candidate for governor, but as an incumbent. This eliminates the threat of blue republicans running someone to challenge him and potentially put an end to things she cared about, like her pipeline.

The office of the governor can go back to working for the people. She has removed their target and freed herself up to stand up and fight against those who attack her… as well as stand up for what she believes in.

She never would have been able to in her current role.

She did not quit. Frankly, sticking around and allowing them to contain and diminish her at the taxpayer’s expense would have been quitting.

I support Palin…but she is just a person. She is a politician. I respect genuine criticism because I think constructive criticism can be helpful.

But what I’ve seen from not only the right but the left has been to tear down. I’m sorry but it’s true.

I love Jonah Goldberg…but seriously. Why not give that advice privately if it was so important? Posting an article of that sort is like publicly dressing her down.

ESPECIALLY since it was clear he didn’t have all the facts. I’m just starting to and to my knowledge, none of these people have included the information regarding her situation in Alaska because they don’t know it. And that’s pitiful.

I thought conservatives were thinkers…and yet I see that a lot of names I respect are really reactionaries. Palin makes a move that they don’t understand so they write her political obituary without considering what might really be going on. And when they’re called on it, they whinge that the Palin lovers are cultists who reject all criticism.

I expect more from conservatives. The left and the media (but I repeat myself) are the ones I expect these kinds of pronouncements from but I expect conservatives to take a closer look and consider the possibility that there’s more than meets the eye.

So please stop with the martyrdom already. Get the facts right, stop making kneejerk pronouncements…and then write a well thought out response.

You’ll see a much better response from Palin supporters if you do.

I was under the impression that a governor’s job entailed working with the legislature to craft laws. If the ethics laws in Alaska are too liberal, she should’ve changed them. Both for her sake, and the sake of every governor to follow after. Her quitting doesn’t resolve that loop hole.

Trent1289 on July 6, 2009 at 3:06 PM

Can you imagine the screaming had Palin tried to do what you suggest?

She’s being hounded by ethics complaints, so she seeks to change the law to make such complaints harder to file.

Everybody who dislikes Palin would have gone ape shiite.

I sympathize with the 1st writer. I’ve been booted from all sorts of Redstate type websites because I dare criticize (constructively) the Conservative Movement and how it has moved off course. I’ve been called a troll, a traiter and a democrat plant.
Hard-core Palinista’s are no different than the rabid Ron Paul supporters during the election. They’re insane and looking for an idol to worship. They’ve allowed their emotions to take over in place of their thought process. They’re no different than the Michael Jackson throngs milling about in the streets of LA! They need to back out of politics for a while.
As for Palin? Like Fred Thompson, she took on some very, very bad advisers. And they steered her in a very negative direction. Who needs to advise Palin?? PALIN! She needs to go on her gut instincts. Be an advocate for Middle America! And “no Sarah, its not too late”. Darvin Dowdy

When were you and your fellow deciders ever silent? You’ve all been ridiculing and attacking her supporters for a long time – or defending those who do — here, on other blogs, and on twitter.

Palin is going to do what Palin is going to do regardless of what her supporters want. Instead of allowing it to play out one way or another, you and your fellow deciders chose to attack her supporters out of pure ego and unfairly attack her.

You got one guy who is so obsessed that he is spending his entire vacation sitting at home in his underwear attacking Palin and her supporters. alliebobbitt on July 7, 2009 at 10:17 AM

Although I’ve not posted about various blogs/editorials/etc. re: Palin, the negative comments from the Right has pissed me off. So, in my last post on HotAir, I’m going to explain why…

I like Palin. I’m not in blind love, as I can’t do that for anyone, so no need to label me inaccurately.

But she has taken so much crap from both sides and her family’s been raked over the coals, and I’ve seen no rational reason for it, that I become ultra protective. She does not deserve this kind of treatment, and yet she receives it…all because she’s Conservative, pretty, and normal (read: no Ivy League taint).

So when those who can’t understand her reasons for exiting begin to post negative comments about how “stupid” the decision is, I get mad…because this is the LAST thing she needs at this time.

Say you don’t get it…say you don’t agree with the decision…fine, whatever.

But when you state she’s done, it’s a stupid decision, blah blah blah…well, I just don’t think that’s a professional approach, because you don’t know whether those comments are true, do you???

I have NO idea how this will turn out…I don’t proclaim to be an “omniscient”, “omnispective” pundit who can’t process her speech, as nothing she says/does meshes with your “Inside the Beltway” viewpoint…and no, you don’t have to live there to gain that…it comes naturally with thinking you know better than those having to decide their own fates.

What I do know is that those who’ve commented negatively have not been kind in their assessment, as they can’t understand why someone would quit anything in the middle for the good of their state, or for any other reason than gaining another office.

Have any of you ever been in politics? Well, I have…10 months on the Hill was 10 months too long. I frankly don’t know how she lasted as long as she did, as she’s too nice and normal for that crap. If she decides to try again, I’ll support her, as we don’t have enough regular people in politics.

Whether I like the decision or not is irrelevant…her reasons for leaving made sense to me, and I’m willing to give her another chance after what she’s endured…from the Left and Right.

You know…if you’re going to begin denigrating politicians in the same manner as the Left, don’t you think you could try focusing that vitriol on the Left? That’s what the Left does…why not copy them completely?

Miss_Anthrope on July 7, 2009 at 10:29 AM

PostScript – I think this will finally be the reason I leave the Republican Party…as many who’ve been tearing her down are insiders with the GOP. I have never been anything but GOP my entire life…thanks, jerks, for proving your elitism!

Miss_Anthrope on July 7, 2009 at 10:32 AM

Ed,

If her supporters demand no criticism of a politician,

That has not been where you and I have differed regarding Palin’s resignation. You deflect the point accompanying your own responsibility. Your IMMEDIATE response was to pronounce Palin’s political death, no equivocation. Your failure to acknowledge your own flaw is your own undoing regarding objectivity.

Most Palin supporters admire her personal qualities of virtue and professional achievements. Out of all her supporters, few there be as you describe, though those few refuse to be smothered or defiled.

No one is perfect. No one actually argues that any human is perfect. What Palin supporters do argue is Palin’s right to make her own decisions without the likes of you calling for her immediate political burial post-haste.

Addendum (Ed) feigns a magnanimous motivation, pointing out the error of your critics’ way.

Where is your retraction, Ed?

I apologize if I somehow missed it. /There’s mine.

Then maybe she shouldn’t have quit, if criticism of quitting her elected position is that destructive.

MadisonConservative on July 7, 2009 at 10:58 AM

My response to the immediate clique pronouncing Palin’s spontaneous political death was that their move is NOT the productive way to deal with a good, perceptive and strong willed woman.

It hasn’t been a week yet, though the constant threads make it an eternity; yet the Three Amigos and their pets have yet to admit they may have attributed to Palin’s abuse.

So far as Ed is concerned, being the one blogger out of the Three Amigos who is married, this behavior is telling and reflects poorly on his mindset as a marriage encounter leader.

Ed, can you improve your own professional public relations with this idea delivered as constructive criticism?* Or are you going to reject the idea and lash out because it hurts? Or are you going to deny it and remain silent in self righteous mode, seething inside? After all, your assumptions regarding Palin have absolutely nothing to do with your own relations or advice to those seeking positive reinforcement in unions. No relationship whatsoever.

* X is not an issue. X is not a political principle. X is a political pundit. If X’s supporters demand no criticism of X’s political observations, they risk turning X and X’s supporters into nothing more than a cult of personality, the kind we derided with Barack Obama. And it does our friends no favors if we see them going over a cliff and remain silent, or worse yet, cheer them to go faster.

That Ed is not the Ed we used to know. With friends like that, no big deal; we are big boys and girls and know that people move on as we note the progressive evolution from Captain’s Quarters to HotAir. Far be it for us to hold you back, Ed, though as your readers and supporters we retain our own right to observe and reciprocate your best intentions.
