Sarah Palin’s Surprise

From my latest American Spectator column:
“Her national political career is done,” NBC’s David Shuster declared, even before reports of her plans to resign had been confirmed. Other media types joined the rush to write Palin’s political obituary, with a Greek chorus of “conservative” commentators transparently eager to agree that her resignation represented proof that Palin is both unelectable to and unfit for higher office.
Of course, she had just exposed as fraudulent the pretended omniscience of the commentariat. None of them had predicted Palin’s resignation, and yet their latest oracular pronouncements — Ed Rollins told CNN she looked “terribly inept” — were treated as authoritative.
The punditocracy can’t predict Palin because she shares neither their perspective nor their assumptions. Her ascent to political stardom has been treated as a fluke by most of the GOP establishment for the simple reason that she doesn’t slavishly follow the standard script of Republican politicians.
Of course, in recent years this script usually has ended with “…and then the Democrats won,” suggesting the need for a re-write. . . .
Please read the whole thing. Sunday morning, I was driving back from Lake Weiss — where we’d shot our fabulous annual Fourth of July fireworks show — when the editor called asking me to write the column.
Of course, not all the commentators rushing to write finis on Palin’s career were of the Ed Rollins/David Schuster variety. Both Ace and Allahpundit hastened to endorse the pundit consensus.
I’ve got MSNBC on my office TV and the mid-day newsette just referred to Palin’s “baffling” resignation. It’s not baffling. Palin explained her reasons, and her reasons sounded entirely plausible to me. What baffles the pundits is the fact that it was (a) unexpected, and (b) doesn’t fit the established script for presidential hopefuls.
The people who pronounce themselves “baffled,” and who conclude that Palin has made a stupid move by resigning, are leaving a couple of things out of their calculations. First, Palin is a Christian who, in the past, has made straightforward reference to the will of God. What she believes — what she must believe — is that if it is God’s will that she become president, she will. Therefore, the conventional wisdom of the commetariat and all the advice from political “experts” are just so much noise to her.
Second, Palin’s closest adviser is her husband, Todd. He is not stupid. He is also not a man who will show up on TV and blabber his every thought for the sake of creating the impression that he knows everything.
Just because you don’t know what Sarah Palin is doing doesn’t mean that she doesn’t know what she’s doing.

Maybe we should have some type of rating system imposed next to our names.
1 being Koz liberal and 10 being Puritan conservative.
All numbers to be given by the housemother and subject to change.

Little dakine always got his weenie butt kicked too, at MM’s blog. He would suck up to the more moderates there, and then eventually they would dump him.
He always came across as kind of lonely and desperate.
Poor thing.

I’m not sure why everyone is so confused as to her motive, it seems perfectly clear to me. In an heroic act of self sacrifice she resigned her position to get Michael Jackson out of the news.

Wouldn’t it be AWESOME if she destroyed the Republican party a la Perot? I would LOVE to see her start a 3rd party and stick it to the GOP for not supporting her. She could start the Conservative Party, and even if she only gets 10% of the vote, Republicans will never win another election. I’m sick of the wishy-washy GOP refusing to stand up for my values. The GOP deserted me. The American public wants socialism? Enjoy. I’ll be fine either way. I will always be able to make money, I will NOT give up my gold or my guns, and the govt can come kill me (a la Ruby Ridge) for all I care. Live free or die, I say.
Destroy them Sarah.

Firebird on July 7, 2009 at 12:00 AM
bazil, I agree. However, people such as those you describe impress when they speak or act. Palin does not. The smartest, most impressive person I know has a high school education. Pres. Reagan was an average student at an average college, yet he was impressive in many, many ways. As Coach Wooden said, don’t mistake activity for accomplishment.
dakine on July 7, 2009 at 12:00 AM
Sorry, that’s a totally subjective answer based on your bias. It does nothing to bolster your case.
I never affirmed any commitment to Palin. I was wondering if you somehow had the proof the media keeps digging for.
Anyway, as far as Jindal goes … did you know he’s written nothing of substance? His lack of intellectual curiosity is obvious in his interviews and speeches. He flopped big time when he gave the GOP response to Obama’s SOTU address. He’s barely a “tier one thinker” on any issue of national importance. I’m sorry, but he’s unimpressive in just about every way possible.
He’s just a governor.

I’m sure dakine is speaking from authority, as the governor of a state run far more intelligently and efficiently than Sarah Palin has run Alaska. It’s located just east of Stormwind, and dakine’s working hard on solving the night elf immigration problem.
The thing I’ll never understand about the blog world is the level of inchoate anger and bitterness people sometimes bring to topics like the Palin resignation. If you manage to gain access as a commenter on a huge web site with tightly restricted registration, why waste it by littering every comment thread with unsubstantiated flotsam about how stupid Political Figure X is? You could write something longer and more thoughtful on the subject. You’ve gained access to an electronic forum read by huge numbers of people, and all you can think to do is spray-paint graffiti all over it.
This is a battleground in the arena of ideas, not the wall of the men’s room in the back of a gas station. If you can’t contribute something stimulating to the discussion, you could at least come up with some witty put-downs. If you can’t do something interesting with the opportunity you’ve been given here, you don’t have much standing to hurl random insults at a woman who’s done so much with the opportunities that were presented to her. I’m interested in hearing anyone’s well-thought-out opinion on why Palin should stay away from politics, or bide her time until later. I’m getting bored with shaking the Magic 8-Ball of drive-by nitwits, when I already know every one of the little triangles says “Palin Is An Idiot.” Step up your game.
Doctor Zero on July 7, 2009 at 12:03 AM
Palin won’t have much of a choice in 2012, the country will beg her to run, they will draft her in every state. The country needs her more than she needs the country. Oh and maybe Obama can answer “where are the jobs?”
Firebird on July 7, 2009 at 12:03 AM
darwin, we’ll just have to agree to disagree. When I listen to Jindal speak, I hear intelligence and depth of thought. Palin, not so much. It’s really not that tough to figure out.

Try it.
Have a good nite.
darwin on July 7, 2009 at 12:10 AM
I “got it” on Friday nite. Once I realized that they were using the ethics law to box her in, this whole move on her part makes total sense.
Thus the problem. The inside the beltway “experts” don’t have any common sense, at least most of them, thus they are baffled.
Also, either here, or at Michelle’s site, someone posted the Wiki write up about what a Point Guard is supposed to do. Sarah used that analogy in her speech. It was brilliant.
This is going to be a fun 3 years as we fight to get our country back on track.

I went to her rallies and the chants were USA ..when the chants turned to Palin.. she redirected. She would be the first person to to say- NO I am not a messiah and do not worship me. She wants to be part of our team, not the worship.
She is a human being just like you and I. She will not be perfect and nor do I expect her to be. I think she would be the first to admit it.

It’s the ban Hammer
coming down
… on dakine…
Seriously… Dakine may “work with smart people” but I do have an IQ in the top 5%. Dakine has added nothing to this discussion but repeating the same thing ad nauseum.
I have to wonder if some of the trolling is the result of an Axelrod paycheck. .. “Hey, make sure you get a lot of ‘Palin is stoopid’ stuff out there in case people read dose posts”
Palin is a real danger to leftists and corrupt ‘conservatives’. That scares the hell out of people.
When I hear “I’m a Jindal Guy” from Dakine, my BS detector goes right off the scale. I would vote for most republicans if they are at the top of the ticket in 2012.
however, going back to the Palin Bashing. There is an orchestrated series of attacks on her and her family. A lot of it seems to be following the Alinsky method of attack. I would not be surpirsed at all if the trail goes right back to the whitehouse.
Now. let’s get back to Dakine. he/she/it has offered nothing of substance, just the Alinsky type attacks on Palin. Makes me go hmmmmm
Business as usual will not stop the socialist/marxist juggernaut. Palin has shown that she has the ability to think outside the box and take on established pols, democrap and republican.
Sarah Palin is attractive, intelligent, feisty, conservative and represents what America was and what it should be.
I’d love to see her as President. I think she has the vision to lead us back to prosperity and freedom. The best part will be the sounds of a couple of hundred million moonbat heads exploding… Ah how sweet that sound will be. !!!

Sorry, she’s not smart, and she demonstrates that fact every time she opens her mouth. News flash: it’s okay to bash Palin and still be a conservative. Every speech she’s ever made, every interview she’s ever given, and every policy paper or article she’s never written evidence her mediocre intellect and lack of interest in any of the issues of our day. She is the paradigm of an intellectual and political lightweight.

All of a sudden, there is this ‘financial crisis’. McCain suspended his campaign while Obama did business as usual. No one got the message out that Jugears and his acorns were a big part of the reason for the ‘crisis’.
Even so, the election was still close. There were a lot of people who voted “For Palin and that guy who is running with her”.

What ever Mrs. Palin does, if it involves the need for funding, my wife and I will support her to the legal limit. Only her.

Oh, I love it! Some one described Ace’s posts as text temper tantrums. LOL

Oh, and another think over there posted several times that I haven’t seen before: tl;dr.
Very cute and applicable.

Left this thread at 10:15.
Many Negra Modelas later (after a stop at a delightful Mexican nightclub,) I’m back, and what do I find?
Dakine is still doing the Ad Hominem, useless peripheral attacks on a variety of posters.
His latest kick seems to be Atheling. While I don’t agree with Atheling often, he does bring sensible discourse to this blog.
Dakine, on the other hand, has not offered anything specific – he makes fun of other posters, and says things that are not provable.
Baz, don’t be discouraged. Some of us here are trying to have a rational conversation, with like-minded folks, and define conservatism.
Others are throwing tantrums.

atheling does not have to outsmart the bear, atheling just has to outsmart you.

Tumultuous text temper tantrum tirades. Don’t under credit the man.

Not everyone knows this parable – but everyone should. Good one!

He’s still going at it in the comments. One thing I find so bizarre is his attack on McCain regarding the if God will’s it language. Has he become an obnoxious overbearing atheist like our boy AP? Instead of disparaging McCain’s writing, he should take lessons from him. Tomorrow, he’s going to be worse.
Full disclaimer: I’m an atheist myself — just not a crazy obsessed one.

Even a man who is pure at heart, and reads Christopher Hitchens by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the summer moon is bright.

Yes, the trolls starting a year and a half ago with Obamas acendence began to take on the rank odor of a Soros basement operation.
The talking points and the drive by bum rushing all smacks of an Axelrod/Soros minimum wage paycheck.
Check Craigslist help wanted ads and the back of local alternative “City Papers”. Now they’re being funded by federal dollars.

I don’t think Palin is an intellect by any standard.
But Rudy and Sarah would be the only candidates I would give a dime to.
Rudy because he’s just a true blue SOB; and Sarah because the rest of the system is totally and utterly corrupted.
At this point, the Ivy league crowd has done nothing but devise more complicated ways to game the system for their own self interest all the while destroying the financial well being of the country.
It’s time for a community college grad who knows how to balance a checkbook, run a business and raise a family.

Palin was about to write a column about her plans for the future, but she quit half way through
HAHAHAH

I never comment here but I just can’t help myself from it.
Pity the fools.

Honestly – I support Sarah in anything she does. She wasn’t a rich person when this all began – compared to everyone involved in the McCain campaign (including staff) – she was number two on the ticket and at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder compared to everyone else. I’m fine with her going off to Wasila – and doing a few speeches and books and becoming a multi-millionaire.
If that happens – we’re the losers. Hey look, the Liberals aren’t celebrating because this is a GOOD thing for us – they’re celebrating because its BAD. Palin’s exit from the scene will result in millions of Conservatives losing interest in the GOP – and they know this.
But the Ayatollah’s of the Republican Party are celebrating also – and the fact that they are is a bit puzzling. Well – it’s actually not when you consider that an Ayatollah has only his own interests at heart and not the health of the party. An Ayatollah is actually extremely short-sighted – and doesn’t really look at the long-range. He’ll take a victory that benefits him today – even if he has no plan to get Conservatives to the polls later other than hoping they’ll rush there anyway to pick the lesser of two evils.
I doubt it. I won’t.
