Sarah Palin’s Surprise
posted at 2:55 pm on July 6, 2009 by The Other McCain
From my latest American Spectator column:
“Her national political career is done,” NBC’s David Shuster declared, even before reports of her plans to resign had been confirmed. Other media types joined the rush to write Palin’s political obituary, with a Greek chorus of “conservative” commentators transparently eager to agree that her resignation represented proof that Palin is both unelectable to and unfit for higher office.
Of course, she had just exposed as fraudulent the pretended omniscience of the commentariat. None of them had predicted Palin’s resignation, and yet their latest oracular pronouncements — Ed Rollins told CNN she looked “terribly inept” — were treated as authoritative.
The punditocracy can’t predict Palin because she shares neither their perspective nor their assumptions. Her ascent to political stardom has been treated as a fluke by most of the GOP establishment for the simple reason that she doesn’t slavishly follow the standard script of Republican politicians.
Of course, in recent years this script usually has ended with “…and then the Democrats won,” suggesting the need for a re-write. . . .
Please read the whole thing. Sunday morning, I was driving back from Lake Weiss — where we’d shot our fabulous annual Fourth of July fireworks show — when the editor called asking me to write the column.
Of course, not all the commentators rushing to write finis on Palin’s career were of the Ed Rollins/David Schuster variety. Both Ace and Allahpundit hastened to endorse the pundit consensus.
I’ve got MSNBC on my office TV and the mid-day newsette just referred to Palin’s “baffling” resignation. It’s not baffling. Palin explained her reasons, and her reasons sounded entirely plausible to me. What baffles the pundits is the fact that it was (a) unexpected, and (b) doesn’t fit the established script for presidential hopefuls.
The people who pronounce themselves “baffled,” and who conclude that Palin has made a stupid move by resigning, are leaving a couple of things out of their calculations. First, Palin is a Christian who, in the past, has made straightforward reference to the will of God. What she believes — what she must believe — is that if it is God’s will that she become president, she will. Therefore, the conventional wisdom of the commetariat and all the advice from political “experts” are just so much noise to her.
Second, Palin’s closest adviser is her husband, Todd. He is not stupid. He is also not a man who will show up on TV and blabber his every thought for the sake of creating the impression that he knows everything.
Just because you don’t know what Sarah Palin is doing doesn’t mean that she doesn’t know what she’s doing.

Not what you meant. You meant she’s a christian who believes in God. btw, the quotes about that in the post are from the author, not Palin. Palin doesn’t claim leadership from divine right, nor have any of her supporters suggested she is divinely chosen. Straw man.
JiangxiDad on July 6, 2009 at 3:24 PM
They moved on to take another political job at a national level, Palin quit for various unconvincing reasons and ultimately to be unemployed. If McCain/Palin had won she would have resigned being governor to take on a national job and wouldn’t have caught any flack for it.
jonknee on July 6, 2009 at 3:24 PM
I would too if I just saw a majority of American sheeple vote in a naive schoolboy and a reptilian senator over a decorated war hero and a successful female governor.
TheMightyMonarch on July 6, 2009 at 3:24 PM
She hid it by telling the national press she was holding a press conference?
Er, no. She had an announcement to make, made it, and did it live on camera. She may not have predicted it would get quite as much attention as it did, but had to know it wouldn’t go unnoticed.
Only diehard lefties really

If Palin is indeed dead in the water as so many assume, one wonders why Dowd, Huffpositors, Kossacks et. al. would be wetting themselves to blast her with both barrels. What’s the point? Say what you want Palin commands attention, and will continue to do so. So what comes next? Count on another barage of Palin fervor next time she sneezes.

I really don’t get what has so vexed our punditry.
She said she was passin’ the governorship to her chosen successor because the idiots up there in Alaska were causing too much trouble with their nuisance suits. It wasn’t just takin’ up Sarah’s time and energy– It was also imposing on the ability of others to do their work.
Sarah was being attacked from EVERY direction and was hamstrung by the office of Governor, soooo she could let the assholes win- Or she could fight back with both hands (and all the money she’s about to make)
The media, local Alaska Democrats, and our own beta-male GOP pundit class are MORE THAN WILLING to advance the idea that there is something sinister or sissy about what she did.
Dude, she’s just gittin’ herself freed up to take the fight HOME. And I’m gonna be right there with her- with or without the GOP!

Most people don’t realize this; the world is going into a great depression. The writing is on the wall and what Obama did in the last five months made sure it will happen.
I believe that Palin and her team spent a great deal of time looking at where the US/world economy is going and came to the same conclusion as I. Her thinking is that most politicians in the coming years will not get reelected due to the economy. If she is part of the problem it will be harder to win the Republican nomination so the risk is very high if she stays in the governor office.
So whoever wins the Republican Nomination will win POTUS in 2012.
Most politicians will not get reelected in the coming years.

I don’t care to be honest, she was never going to be able to make it through a general election anyway. I just find it interesting to see people self destruct. Moreover, I also find it interesting to watch rapid supporters struggle to play defense after being confronted with the growing realization that their dreams of the future are never going to be realized. Stick with every human’s unalienable rights. Sarah has the right of self determination that she places in God’s hands. She can accept God’s will, whether or not you can. Where she looks for inner strength, you would be wise to leave well enough alone rather than ridicule.

Let’s try a thought experiment.
When the media genuinely counts some poor bastard out of the running, thinks someone’s political career is over, how does the media convey that sentiment?
Well, for a recent example, think of John Edwards (D).
How did the media declare ex-Presidential candidate John Edwards (D) career over?
Hmmm, I don’t recall a special report, or a raucous political round table, or comedian’s jokes.
Okay, maybe John is a special case.
How Ralph Nader?
Hmmm, nope, no announcement.
See, when an individual implodes politically, the expected behavior of media is to ignore them.
And what do leftists do when they don’t get their way, and can’t change reality to make it do what they want it to do?
They pretend their fantasy is true.
E.g., the shameful Bush assassination films, the bizarre pretend-impeachment leftards operated in the basement of the Capitol, etc. etc.
What you’re seeing is the state-run media throwing another little temper tantrum and make-believing Sarah is out of politics forever. Infantile, isn’t it?

jp on July 6, 2009 at 3:41 PM
I agree that Palin might be smarter than everybody, but as a Palin supporter, I have to say that I found her press conference baffling. The reasons sounded lame and overly communicated, in the “methinks she doeth protest too much” sort of way that suggests there is more happening than we know about. I’m okay with not knowing all her motivations, but when you do something like this it’s bad for your future prospects as the last impression you leave with everybody is one of being a bit “not right.” That has a tendency to linger and confirm what the mainstream media has been suggesting about her since McCain picked her.
IMO, it would have been better, if she had just said, “My family was pretty traumatized by the whole presidential campaign and follow-on circus. I can’t govern effectively with my family constantly the subject of unfair hit-jobs and the butt of late-night-TV jokes, and so I have decided to resign in order to heal and regroup.”
That’s it. Then just stop talking and walk away from the microphone.

Whatever Obama tells you he is, he’s an atheist like every other Statist utopian.
The great dialectical materialists over the centuries used the rhetoric of religion to facilitate acceptance their totalist regimes. Sort of like Communist China ordains Catholic Bishops illegitimately today. The Statists act as if they have faith, but they do it because they think the people are stupid.
Granted, in Obama’s case his opinion of his supporters is pretty accurate, but still, any religious language he uses is purely for show. His leadership-style is a continuation of a long line of callous political manipulators who loathe religion. Keep an eye on this bastard.

Huh? A national figure and governor doesn’t owe a reasonable, straightforward explanation as to why she’s resigning?
And you found her reasons “entirely plausible”? Even the bizarre “lame duck” rationale? She’s not going to run for re-election, and thus there’s no reason to complete the term she was elected for? That’s plausible to you?
You’re right in that we don’t know what she’s up to- but that’s because she chose not to tell us. Given her resignation speech, we really don’t know exactly why she resigned, either. Was it the personal expense of the bogus ethics complaints? The distraction they caused? Concerns for her family? Because she’s a self-imposed “lame duck”? Because she has other plans to advance her agenda?
She cited all those things, and in doing so left more questions than answers.
