Sarah Palin’s Surprise

From my latest American Spectator column:
“Her national political career is done,” NBC’s David Shuster declared, even before reports of her plans to resign had been confirmed. Other media types joined the rush to write Palin’s political obituary, with a Greek chorus of “conservative” commentators transparently eager to agree that her resignation represented proof that Palin is both unelectable to and unfit for higher office.
Of course, she had just exposed as fraudulent the pretended omniscience of the commentariat. None of them had predicted Palin’s resignation, and yet their latest oracular pronouncements — Ed Rollins told CNN she looked “terribly inept” — were treated as authoritative.
The punditocracy can’t predict Palin because she shares neither their perspective nor their assumptions. Her ascent to political stardom has been treated as a fluke by most of the GOP establishment for the simple reason that she doesn’t slavishly follow the standard script of Republican politicians.
Of course, in recent years this script usually has ended with “…and then the Democrats won,” suggesting the need for a re-write. . . .
Please read the whole thing. Sunday morning, I was driving back from Lake Weiss — where we’d shot our fabulous annual Fourth of July fireworks show — when the editor called asking me to write the column.
Of course, not all the commentators rushing to write finis on Palin’s career were of the Ed Rollins/David Schuster variety. Both Ace and Allahpundit hastened to endorse the pundit consensus.
I’ve got MSNBC on my office TV and the mid-day newsette just referred to Palin’s “baffling” resignation. It’s not baffling. Palin explained her reasons, and her reasons sounded entirely plausible to me. What baffles the pundits is the fact that it was (a) unexpected, and (b) doesn’t fit the established script for presidential hopefuls.
The people who pronounce themselves “baffled,” and who conclude that Palin has made a stupid move by resigning, are leaving a couple of things out of their calculations. First, Palin is a Christian who, in the past, has made straightforward reference to the will of God. What she believes — what she must believe — is that if it is God’s will that she become president, she will. Therefore, the conventional wisdom of the commetariat and all the advice from political “experts” are just so much noise to her.
Second, Palin’s closest adviser is her husband, Todd. He is not stupid. He is also not a man who will show up on TV and blabber his every thought for the sake of creating the impression that he knows everything.
Just because you don’t know what Sarah Palin is doing doesn’t mean that she doesn’t know what she’s doing.

Good job by the other Mac. Oh to live in a world without pundits to tell us who to support:
Charles K: Palin is not serious, until I say otherwise
Jonah G: Dear Sarah, to succeed you must be more like me
Fred Barnes, Rove & the WSJ today: She can come back in 10-20 years, so long as she doesn’t piss us off between now & then
Allah, Ace & Ed: hey, stop bullying us

I don’t think so.

(? above is a quote, don’t see buttons for some reason).
Not sure why so many people are having trouble understanding her reasons. I knew what she was saying (especially after viewing the full speech). You hit it directly on the head. If you view her speech and take her at her word, it makes sense. If you overanalyze it and try to decide which angle will give you her hidden meaning, you’ll never understand where she’s coming from.

I started laughing because this statement reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Homer became garbage commissioner. The former one does a speech where he basically says “You’re screwed. Goodbye.” That amuses me because it’s kind of true.

No one will remember this in 3.5 years from now. The only thing Americans care about in the next Presidential election is food on the table. With unemployment rate expected to go over 20% I really doubt Obama will get reelected.
When she resigning she remove herself from any blame in the economy. By resigning the Democrats in Alaska cannot corner her before the 2012 election. Overall she made a good move I think.

Maybe. She hasn’t appeared to be one to demand that people agree with her faith perspective, but is pretty open about what she believes.
Did you hear the line in her speech about how God placed resources here for us to use to help people? Stating the obvious here, but I think whatever she says in the future is going to have “Energy” as a pretty constant refrain.

In reading the full article just now, my internal reaction to all the opinions of “pundits” was something Mortimer Adler once said. In fact it’s the only thing he ever said that I would consider paraphrasing on a conservative blog: When most people say they’re thinking, what they really mean is that they are rearranging their prejudices.

Palin ends up hosting some type of TV or radio show for a couple years – makes millions upon millions – and then runs for the Senate.

I hope the best for her. Tha Christian analogy that if it is God’s will, then it will be, is an excellent insight into Christian behaviour. She is one of the few true conservatives left, and I hope, for purely selfish reasons, that she continues in politics.
She has shown time and again that she will do as she says, which is amazing in the political institute that our country has morphed into. If she resigned to take of her family, than God bless her, I hope she succeeds. If she decided to devote more time to a Presidential candidacy, I hope for the same success.

Defending irrational actions is a precarious position. The same logic could be used for Obama and while it makes no more sense perhaps it would make it apparent how flawed it is for Palin. Cult of personality is something both parties could do without.
Don’t trust in what you want someone do, trust in what they have already done. Palin has quit.

None of this cuts to the heart of the matter of Palin’s political ambitions. The American public was put off by her canned answers and fumbling in 08, and unless she grows to the point where she can discuss foreign policy and economics in an articulate fashion, the national stage will not welcome her very well.
Then again, she could already be capable of doing so. Maybe McCain’s handlers were to blame for much of the disaster. I’m not exactly sure, but I know which side I’m leaning to. I hope I’m wrong.
