Video: Matalin thinks Palin is “brilliant” for resigning

posted at 6:30 pm on July 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

And now, just to be fair, the other side of the argument. Posted without editorial comment; you already know my opinion as someone who had never written a post critical of Palin before yesterday, and if you don’t, feel free to click on the links in the Top Picks column. Mary Matalin offers this analysis, transcript via Crooks & Liars:

MATALIN: Well, I think it’s really brilliant, with two caveats, one being that there’s nothing else, ala the Sanford fiasco. There’s nothing else that we don’t know. If all that’s there is what we see right now, it’s brilliant.

And, secondly, that she has a plan and people have a plan to put up with the conventional wisdom, chatterati and the political class saying how stupid it is, because it’s brilliant.

On the substance, there’s the key economic issue — I know everyone says — thinks it’s health care, but it’s really energy. And she’s the queen of energy.

And the second big issue for 2012 will be the role of government. And she has a record of reform and ethics reform and making government smaller and reigning in spending — all those issues that are getting increasingly important as Barack Obama expands on his agenda.

So — and her delivery was incredible — a charis — a less charismatic person probably couldn’t pull it off. But as — as already referenced, she will be freed up and liberated in the way Mitt Romney is here to run around and raise money and get political chips by spending it and get political capital. And she is still raising the kinds of crowds and money that she always did.

Follow the link to C&L if you want to hear a rebuttal from David Gergen and Ed Rollins, the latter of whom has been around Republican campaigns for a very long time.

Update: My caveat in the opening paragraph wasn’t about getting “beat up”; I’m a big boy, and I can take honest criticism. It’s correcting the falsehood in the comment strings that I’ve been a Palin-hater. If people actually read what I’ve written about Palin over the past year, nothing could be further from the truth. I’m going to give people my honest opinion, no matter what.

As for using the clip from C&L, er, so what? This segment is from CNN. I couldn’t find it on YouTube or on CNN’s site when I had a few minutes to post. Someone asked me if I would be fair and post Matalin’s defense after our criticism of Palin, and I posted what I could find of it.

Sorry, I hope I don’t offend you, but Beck and Hannity are fools…Rush, not so much, however I only listen to him every few weeks,

It makes no sense….

Or it the good and bad or just the same?

Beside me you are the only person to mention in a post the Ziegler comment that I am aware of. Ziegler was answering a question to a listener and at first stuck by his patter that Sarah should wait till 2016 (the MSM is too heavily invested in the Messiah for him to fail) and then all of sudden threw in a quick comment that based on Palin’s recent interviews “expect a surprise.”

Why this did not get more airing or circulation God only knows. I thought it was significant at the time and as it turns it was in predicting the future.

Ziegler is tied so closely to Palin because of Media Malpractice-really it is shocking that nobody from the MSM or even the right wing media picked up on his comment.

There’s a lot of misconstruing going on here. He was merely demonstrating a double standard in judging the actions of political officials by the writer here.

People who come onto this thread late need to get a sense of the history of the comments so they don’t make that error.

And I mean you too, Mr. Lox.

atheling on July 6, 2009 at 1:35 AM

Yes he was. But he normally doesn’t do this from what I can tell. Then he back tracked a bit. So I cut him some slack and didn’t follow his thread.

Anyway you are on fire and I sure hope you get behind Sarah in some tangible way. Not just by posting. You have superior debating skills and bring FACTS to the table which is really needed and you are not afraid to throw a few punches.

I’m a guy but I think women are the key to the conservative comeback. They males have been neutered. I don’t know what happened to them. They got branded with all the stereotyping by the left and are completely on the defense out of fear of saying what they believe.

I went to two tea parties yesterday and there is plenty of enthusiasm for a comeback. No one is counting out Sarah’s influence and the drawing power she can wield.

Many of the Libs we saw were not smiling. None of them even had flags on the 4th of July. They know Obama is a fraud.

And I am sic of the good old-boy-network so I can empathize with you. Sarah was the only one who would dare speak out about Obama. She tainted their sacred cow and now they want to stone her.

Geochelone on July 6, 2009 at 1:53 AM

Ed and Allah, I don’t think either of you are Palin haters. I have said from the beginning that those who have a stake with their own State usualy go for them. Good luck to the both of you concerning that avenue.

As for any others.

I SAW the KTUU Van over by lake lucille when it was breaking. I KNEW it was coming.

Now… if I said I predict her running…. what will you say then? As I predicted her for VP (as did Oink).

You know, I’ve been thinking of what you suggested. I am on fire and I am terribly worried about our nation.

I don’t know why the men of the GOP are so… blah. It seems that Sarah thinks and acts outside of the box, and she has solid conservative core principles. That works for me – for any candidate, man or woman.

I will say this, however. The GOP better start treading carefully when it comes to Sarah Palin. If they double cross her, or dismiss her, and she dumps them, they will have committed suicide as a party.

Perhaps I will take steps to follow your idea, thank you!

atheling on July 6, 2009 at 1:58 AM

Upinak, just the person I was hoping would show up. =)

I just read today that Alaska law says ethics complaints are supposed to be confidential unless the subject of the complaint chooses to make it public. In fact, it might have been on your blog where I read that. Anyway, since the people who filed the complaints went public with them (at least the 2 cases I looked into) the law was broken. Do you know what the penalty for that is? How can we make sure that they get the due penalty, so this tactic is nipped in the bud?

Cause the media is brain dead. Group-think causes dementia. Hopeful they will become too stupid to cheat and lie.

Anyway HA did have a thread about Zigg giving a heads up but it was after the fact. Hannity gave a heads up also a few months ago. He signaled that Palin didn’t need to have a title to be effective. She is free to wield a might lib-slaughtering sword.

Almost all of them were broken.

There is no repercusion on those who file it and then “spill”. But yet Gov Palin will probably be paying out the ying yang concerning some of them.

I am trying to change the ethic regulations with a few legilators right now concerning “paying back” of those whom file. It seems to be gaining speed.

As for Palin running – she’s created a new reality for American national politicians. Why should she settle for mere president, especially after the office has been so badly devalued?

Only half-kidding.

CK MacLeod on July 6, 2009 at 2:04 AM

Go for it, Upinak. The one that got me was the latest one where it was claimed that (basically) if any old person isn’t able to bankrupt a politician then the whole ethics system is ineffective. I’d really like for that gal to have a little dose of her own medicine.

If you get involved you will feel empowered. As I said, I went to Two tea-parties yesterday. Never did anything like that before. Today I signed a petition. Never did that before.

I talked three other people into going to the Tea-Party. All it took was a couple of emails. People are pissed off and scared.

The TP was so much fun. It gets your patriotic blood flowing. We need raw unadulterated emotion to get us thru this.

Got to meet the most fantastic people. A couple of old ladies were telling me stories that hit home. And I would rather go into battle with them than these metroseualized males we have in in party.

You are right again. If Palin keeps getting dissed she will split off and I will follow. The GOP must know this.

It will be interesting tomorrow to see what the Rasmussen daily tracking poll number is. On Thursday (last result) the net approval index was -2 and the overall approval number was +7 for Obama.

And especially with the poll being taken on the wake of the Palin resignation announcement.

Geochelone:

I went to the April 15 Tea Party but couldn’t make the July 4 one. I loved the April one – I felt energized and hopeful.

I also volunteered for the McCain/Palin campaign – only felt motivated to do so after Sarah came on board. Otherwise, it was a “hold my nose” and vote for McCain because it’s the lesser of two evils.

Well, somehow I gotta get in touch with the Palin camp and do something constructive!

“People are pissed off and SCARED.”

I think the MSM and even the right wing focus way too much on the ANGER factor at the Tea Parties and discount or dismiss the FEAR OR TERROR factor that the Messiah and his thugs have injected into American life.

The RINO’s definitely have no clue about how the grassroots truly feel about Obama. Quite frankly, he makes them sick to their stomach and want to puke.

Do you remember on October 13th when McCain made his famous prouncement to the world to a concerned McCain-Palin supporter asking about Obama and that McCain answered: “Senator Obama is a fine and decent man-a good family man. You have nothing to be FRIGHTENED of if Senator Obama becomes President…”

Palin is like the test in BLADE RUNNER that distinguishes between people and replicants in conservative-land. Nowadays, she’s even separating the borderline or wanna-be establishment bloggers – Ed, Allah, Ace, Mirengoff, Moran, et al – from their non-establishment readers/commenters.

Since we don’t live in BLADE RUNNER world, if the movement is going to be successful, some of THEM, and a lot of others are going to have be turned into, or back into, US.

I am, of course, a huge proponent of healthcare reform. Definitely not on the conservative side on that one. I am disappointed he’s not twisting arms and taking names on that one.

Stimulus and budget? Man, that sucked big-time! I do not agree on Cap and Trade. I can’t stand all the EFCA talk….totally disagree on that.

AnninCA on July 6, 2009 at 2:58 AM

And he seems worse than I anticipated in that he’s really a cardboard guy.

AnninCA on July 6, 2009 at 2:56 AM

That’s the worst you can accuse him of?

Sheesh, go back to your knitting.

AnninCA on July 6, 2009 at 2:58 AM

Uh, Bush is no longer “making decisions”. Obama is copying Bush’s “decisions”.

Holy Moly. Are you drinking?

atheling on July 6, 2009 at 3:01 AM

Hey Benny you still blogging? I remember when you were outed. Right? Really would hate to see you get caught up in all of this. I bet your feet haven’t hit the ground since friday. Enjoy while you can.

chief on July 6, 2009 at 3:01 AM

No, I as asked what I liked.

I think his decisions about GM was completely political and I resent it.

I think supporting EFCA is completely irresponsible, given global economies.

I think his payoff to supporters via the stimulus was absolutely irresponsible.

I can’t believe anyone Jewish is still supportive. His position on Israel is unworkable.

And he’s lying through his teeth about transparency. He’s even more controlling with the press than Bush was.

AnninCA on July 6, 2009 at 3:02 AM

But some eggs are gonna get broken.

CK MacLeod on July 6, 2009 at 2:27 AM

Yay? We’re going with the humpty-dumpty strategy to beat Obama now? This isn’t going to end well.

RightOFLeft on July 6, 2009 at 2:46 AM

Sorry, comrade, but I don’t think you’re seeing clearly: “It” has already ended badly. This is the something else. To paraphrase Churchill, this isn’t the beginning of the end, but it may be the end of the beginning. In the very best of circumstances, there are going to be a lot of people who you thought were on one side, who are going to end up on the other. And a lot of people are going to be eating a lot of words. Me, too, I expect. No one said life would be easy.

I want to warn you about AnninCA. She is a concern troll. She is gaming us and lying. I know about her from No Quarter which is a PUMA site. She annoyed many people over their during the election cycle.

This is her pattern. She starts out nice, usually tries to hijack the thread and alter the flow baiting people for a response. Pretneds to talk both sides of every issue.

Many of her responses are vague simply because they are canned cut and pasted replies designed to pertain to a trigger word much like a horoscope.

After a while she can no longer maintain the false composure. Then she makes a typical left wing stereotypical comment designed to insult us.

Like if you are against illegal immigration you are a hater (“She just can’t get behind the hate” in her words). Or if you don’t favor abortion you will cause back-alley coat hanger abortions. Stuff like that.

And she claims she goes to tea parties but she is for Cap and Trade and Universal health care. No one believes her.

Just a warning.

The Iquitarod is unique in that anyone reaching the halfway point can abandon the race and declares herself a winner.

The economy currently has fewer jobs than it had in May 2000 (when there were 131.9 million jobs). And importantly, this decline was not occurring because the jobs weren’t needed — the labor force has expanded by 12.5 million workers since then, as the population continued to grow. This is the only recession since the Great Depression in which the job loss wiped out all the job growth of the previous recovery. We now have fewer jobs than in May 2000 when the recovery began, though the economy now has 12.5 million more workers. Hidden unemployment is also setting records [U6 - 16.5% unemployment] – people with part time work who want full time work, as well as people whose hours have been involuntarily cut.
- Economic Policy Institute

Thank you, Herr Obama! Billions of jobs created or saved!!!

At least Hitler and Mussolini, fellow socialist fascist tyrants who preceded Herr Obama, were good for their economies anyway.

Amazing the hate that comes at Sarah and her family. Sometimes I wish she would come up with a real nut-busting, mean, cheap shot at Obambi. Take away what little manhood he has. The psyche wards in Manhattan will be filled with pundits frothing at the mouth for weeks.

kwbrownie2003 on July 6, 2009 at 3:21 AM

I don’t get posters like you at all, Geo. You seem to think there’s a way people can “destroy” threads.

We’re just all talking and opining.

You give me way, way too much power.

AnninCA on July 6, 2009 at 3:21 AM

I have been reading a lot of Palin sites this weekend. Also I watched the FoxNews special on Palin that they re-aired tonite. What has been overlooked by almost everyone is when Sarah Palin resigned from that oil and gas commission (or whatever that was), because the corrupt republicans in charge of the state were allowing the state Republican chair abuse his power in some official capacity. So Sarah resigned from that commission so she could fight the corruption as a citizen from the outside, as she was limited on the inside.

So she and her army of Alaska Palinistas overthrew the entrenched Republican corruptocrats in power there. She beat the incumbant Governor, and replaced the cronies while she was governor. She did this with her army’s help, when she flanked them from outside the system.

Anyone see a pattern here? She could not get accomplished what she knows needs to be done as governor. So she is resigning to be unleashed.

Her army awaits. This “quitter” is going to be a formidable weapon in the 2010 election season.

Sweeeeet!!!!!!!!!

Well, she has to address policies. One problem has been that the party has to wait for the failures before really being able to attack him. Otherwise, it’s just a personal attack, and nobody really likes that.

I like how she’s speaking out about the attacks. I never agreed with Hillary, even, on “taking it.” I don’t agree with the principle behind that. Some stuff, sure….you just ignore. Other stuff? You ignore it, and you’re actually condoning it in society. That goes against principles.

Oh yeah, definitely. I was like everyone else. Shocked at first.

but within 24 hours, I saw that she was absolutely on the money as far as strategy goes. She has to stop playing the game the way others dictate. It’s either her game, or don’t bother.

AnninCA on July 6, 2009 at 3:28 AM

Oh, I agree with Obama’s Cairo speech nearly 90%. I also like keeping Gates on. I do like the withdrawal from Iraq, and I’m glad it’s methodical. I think he’s done just fine on TARP continuation, although his PR on that was a mess.

So, it’s a mixed review. He seems better than I anticipated given his lack of real experience. And he seems worse than I anticipated in that he’s really a cardboard guy.

AnninCA on July 6, 2009 at 2:56 AM

Just wondering, how did you come up with the 90-10 ratio? What part of the Cairo speech do you agree with; is it the part were he lied about the historical achievement of Islam to modern civilization or the part where he reminded his audience that America shed blood to liberate muslims in Kosovo, Afghanista, Kuwait and Iraq; sorry he did not say that. let me guess that’s the 10% you do not agree with. What about the part where he equated the Jews dying in concentration camps in WWII with the war of choice (excuse to libs) being executed by the Palestinian terrorists on the people of Israel. Forgetting that on three different occasions; land for peace has been offered to the Palestinians by the Jews in Israel. Did you like the part he spoke about radical islamic terrorist; oops forgot he did not say that or even mention the word terrorist or his preferred term “man made disaster”. I’m sure this sums up the 10% you disagree with him on.

You are a huge proponent of destroying the best healthcare system in the world; in essence ruining the healthcare for over 180 million Americans to cover 40 million Americans and illegal immigrants. I see you gleefully believe this is about healthcare; my dear this has been the game plan of the progressive movement from FDR; it’s about control; if they succeed in passing it, you’ll find out when you grow older. You talk like conservative don’t have a genuine alternative that’s workable and which lives intact our currently working system. You think that the same government which has bankrupted Social Security and run Medicare and Medicaid to the ground will all of a sudden do better using the same model; I guess it’s “The One!” (excuses AllahP) so its possible. One more thing; the arm twisting he’s doing is not enough eh? the pass the healthcare reform or the US is going to end up like GM is not scary enough; you might be on to something; AMA which initially opposed his plans suddenly changed its mind, ditto Walmart, next Obama’s former personal doctor who was on Fox and Friends giving thumbs down to the proposed plans. Expect a thumbs up from him anytime soon. Prepare for a shocker in the coming years; stay tuned

All they can say that Palin is crazy. How disingenuous!

technopeasant on July 6, 2009 at 3:29 AM

Julian, I think he’s wrong about the Jewish settlements. That was the 10%.
