Video: Ferraro says Palin made a “big mistake”

posted at 11:15 am on July 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

From the network that gave Sarah Palin her best coverage, and from the woman who gave Palin the best treatment among Democrats, Palin’s resignation still gets criticized. Geraldine Ferraro defended Palin from some of the worst excesses of the media attacks and continues to do it in this interview, but also says failing to finish her term would damage her long-term political prospects:

Ferraro makes another good point towards the end. As governor of Alaska, Palin had a seat at the table for policy issues, especially on energy and budgeting. Regardless of how the media treated her, her office gave her access. As Sarah Palin, private citizen, that’s no longer going to be the case. She’ll make her money on the lecture circuit, but she’s all but destroyed her opportunity to force change, at least in Alaska.

Words of wisdom coming from the mouth of a fellow former Female VP candidate…IMO she`s just envious because she (Ms. Ferarro….and 95% of the rest of the beltway establishment for that matter) doesn’t have the cojones to pull off a move like that. To all the nay-sayers, whether you support Palin, hate her, or fall somewhere in between…ever heard of a self-fulfilling prophecy? I often wonder WHY in the world this woman is so darned polarizing, and why the “establishment” wants to tear her down SOOO very badly…sorta like another fine conservative aspiring Presidential candidate from years past (bout 30 years ago or so…has it been THAT long…sheesh). It strikes me as odd that those of us who claim to be of conservative ilk will move to eviscerate one of our own in a millisecond…all because said person lacks a certain pedigree…shameful if you ask me. Oh wait I get it…we NEED another McCainRomneyHuckster to go to bat for us huh? Sorry but I`ll pass on that if even remotely possible. It`s only political suicide if we all act like the good little sheeple we are supposed to be and fall in line to condemn her….what the heck ever happened to thinking for ourselves?!?

NY Conservative on July 4, 2009 at 1:21 PM

My prediction:
Major family problem/illness. She quit to handle that and not let that issue distract from doing the governorship. She’ll kick it, and be endeared to voters of all stripe (probably cancer. Hers, or someone really close).

No, it is your heroes who have been doing that, sweetheart. You are the follower of a party that is historically corrupt. They don’t even deny it anymore but you are oblivious to it. Your party is more behaviorly and idiologically related to the soviet communist party then to anything American. Nearly every ill we can point to in this country was brought about by policies forced on us by your party.

I was a lukewarm fan of Palin’s and if she runs again I’m pretty turned off by her quitting. But a better gauge for how this will hurt Palin’s future political career is my wife. She really liked Palin and she came home from work yesterday after hearing the news and her press event and said she sounded incoherent and her reasoning made no sense. If my wife is saying that… It may be over for her.

oddjob1138 on July 4, 2009 at 1:09 PM

Could your wife use her zen-like intuition and tell me if this numbers will be a winner in the next powerball; 7, 8, 11….

I think Ferraro and Fox too are upset because they want her around and now feel slighted!

CCRWM on July 4, 2009 at 1:27 PM

Ferarro’s response is pretty much what everyone said initially…except Kristol. It was just a shocker announcment and drew out the typical reaction.

Upon reflection, it makes more and more sense, however. She’s got star power out the kazoo. Why let it be drained away with silly stuff like the ethics complaint that she wore advertising on her jacket? LOL* I mean, really. It was completely nuisance stuff going on.

She tried staying low. The press wouldn’t allow it. So that approach didn’t work.

This is the logical next move. Go out and shake some peach trees.

Gauge and guessing what will happen are two totally different things. Let me lead you through what I mean in plain language since you were unable to figure it out on your own. If a big fan like my wife is turned off by this move, that does not bode well for Palin’s future political career. Compared to me who was already lukewarm about her after being wowed her initial introduction to the national political scene. I was already not much of a fan so my opinion weighs less than somebody who has been a supporter losing faith. See? See the difference between that and me saying my wife knew what would happen, which you tried to infer. Nothing even close to your pathetic condescending unprovoked attack on my wife. Nicely done.

I’ve thought long and hard about this. The National GOP establishment effectively joined forces with the Democrats to destroy Palin. The RNC and McCain’s folks did very little to defend her during the campaign, and knifed her in the back less than 1 day after the election. The Vanity Fair piece and some of the dust-ups about Palin speaking at various RNC dinners proved that. The Alaska GOP doesn’t like Palin either, because Palin won by smacking down the corrupt jackasses who were in charge of Alaska for a long time. Notice further that the Republican Party has done absolutely NOTHING to defend or protect Palin from the dozens of frivolous ethics charges that were literally bankrupting her.

I think Palin sat down with her family, and said “guys, this just isn’t worth it anymore.” It’s a perfectly defensible position, and one I’d be sorely tempted to make were I in her position. But the Republican Party’s complicitness in her demise, in my view, shows that we have a VERY long way to go in order to be a seriously viable national party.

How sad. Gov. Palin, I hope you and your family are able to heal and to move on with your lives. I also hope you guys rack up a small fortune with your book, speaking fees, and maybe even a Fox News gig. Screw the bastards…

What exactly is this rumor? That Palin stole building supplies from the Wasilla sports center to use in her house? You know, given how many assistant U.S. attorneys and Public Integrity Section managers at main Justice conspired to frame Ted Stevens on corruption charges based on home remodeling issues, I’m SERIOUSLY disinclined to believe any such nonsense with Palin.

Outlander on July 4, 2009 at 1:51 PM

Outlander on July 4, 2009 at 1:48 PM

That’s EXACTLY what she is planning to do, wait and see.

Key West Reader on July 4, 2009 at 1:52 PM

I know it as been largely dismissed as a possibility, but perhaps she is considering a run at the Senate next year. That would entail a primary challenge and would mean she’d have to get started campaigning, like, yesterday. And even if she’s not running for anything herself, if she wants to help others get elected or re-elected in 2010, she can’t do so from the Governor’s office without it disrupting her ability to govern and creating a three-ring circus which, she is right, is not fair to the people she’s serving.

I think the announcement probably could have been handled differently, but Sarah Palin does a lot of things that are different from the norm. I don’t think that necessarily renders it a disaster. I don’t know what her plans are . . . whatever comes next (and I doubt it’s a scandal), I’ll support her. I’d be disappointed if she never ran for office again, but I’d certainly understand if she didn’t. The treatment she’s received from the left, from the RINOs, and from the press has been obscene. But I wouldn’t complain if she just became a leader for the movement, speaking out on behalf of other candidates who share her views. I think she can be effective that way as well.

NoLeftTurn on July 4, 2009 at 1:52 PM

It’s like a sniper that has gone rogue. Potential targets start staying indoors, and away from tall buildings. They protest loudly that either they have done nothing wrong, or that their target deserved the shots they, themselves, had taken.

There are a lot of professional Palin-bashers that have been very busy in the recent past. Things might get real interesting for them in the near future.

If a massive effort were to be undertaken, by Palin supporters, to identify individuals that have produced the most vile and persistent attacks on Palin’s family things could be made uncomfortable for those people.

These particularly vile, reprehensible liberals should be targeted, individually and one at time, for scruinity and investigation. Each one should be hounded into unemployment buy making it uncomfortable, or uneconomic, for their employer to continue to pay for their services.

First render them unemployed. Then make them unemployable.

If these people continue to get away with their BS there will be no reason for them to stop. There will always be targets for them. Their actions need to have consequences for them as individuals.

Yoop on July 4, 2009 at 1:54 PM

You know the problem here?

Palin’s critics are myopic and and think linearly. Checkers. Palin has eyes in the back of her head and thinks cubicly. Chess.

1. Sean Parnell is well liked and worked arm in arm with Palin on the pipeline deal. She will be able to advocate, support, and advise from a high profile, well-informed, credible platform to help the new governor. This streamlines the Palin-Alaska agenda without interference from George Soros, DNC, and MSNBC. Winner…Alaska.

The new governor will have the remaining term as governor with which to advance his next term’s campaign on a platform of experience. Winner…Palin-Alaska Agenda.

2. Palin, having beat all 15, politically motivated ethics complaints, has just outflanked that attack machine. She can do anything she wants now without any tedious legal tightropes to walk.

3. The GOP brass will find themselves sitting across the table from a very shrewd politician. I mean, after all, all she has to do is look down at her nails, look back up and say “Go ahead. Make my day.” Advantage…Palin

4. Palin is free to travel the country and the world. Winner…Palin

5. The “ethics” attack machine has to fold up shop, and join the “personal” attack arm of the Left’s war department. Advantage…Palin

6. Palin can spend a lot of time with her family. Winner…The Palins

6. Palin sells news. They will be unable to ignore her. They’ll give her a megaphone in the belief that it will help to destroy political opposition to Obama. She will have a megaphone. Advantage…Palin

7. The press, the DNC and the RINO’s are going to call her a quitter, which will soon be rendered impotent. Once again, their behind the curve analysis will be clearly seen for the elitist political attack machine that it always has been. Winner…Palin

8. She can attack Obama policies in ways the rest of the opposition hasn’t got the cajones. Winner…hands down, Palin.

9. She can speak as citizen Palin. Winner…Palin

10. The military loves her. Advantage…Palin

11. Obama is crossing the Rubicon; Palin is crossing the Delaware. Winner…??? This is where the rubber meets the road.

All these things dovetail. Linear thinking can’t see the forest through the trees.

It is a matter of pulling together constituents and convincing enough non-ideological voters that you are pragmatic.

A successful GOP candidate will likely be:
1.) Philosophically federalist
2.) Favor market over government solutions.
3.) Be pro-life but have rape & incest exceptions.
4.) Let states decide marriage.
5.) Strong on 2nd Amendment
6.) Favor roll-back of affirmative action
7.) Pursue low-tax/high growth/low debt agenda.
8.) Pursue greater national energy independence.

Ferraro believes we have seen the worse and things like employment and the economy are going to improve…she is a dreamer. I believe as things get worse people will be looking for anyone who has any financial fiscal credibility to run in 2012…but what about a Senate seat from Alaska?

Also who is the LEFT going to blame and try to distract the public with in the 24/7 news cycle? No more Palin Punching Bag, she took herself out of the Loop…they used all the BDS juice up. Oh Mark Sanford took himself out of serious contention. NOPE the Democrats don’t have anyone left to blame or use as a distraction. Things are really starting to get interesting. They love to eat their own it would be interesting to have a poll to see who will be the first forced under the bus ;)

Of course the retarded jokes about a Palin run for President in 2012 make the Democrats look real Grown up and Responsible for their own candidate in 2012/SARC. Arriana Huffington offering any kind of mental health care, for her bloggers because they could sure use some.

Dr Evil on July 4, 2009 at 2:07 PM

If this was such a big mistake,,, then why is the media all over her for it?
Truth is,,, history is made each and every day.
2 years from now as the nation is bearing the full weight and burdens of Obamanomics,,, this will be no big deal,, as long as Sarah is out there articulation the right message, traveling the nation and world and establishing a team,,, this act of resigning today will be a distant and vague memory. His continued assaults on America every other day will dim the memory of this resignation well.
It’s all about what she does after this. No simpler than that.

JellyToast on July 4, 2009 at 2:11 PM

I was a lukewarm fan of Palin’s and if she runs again I’m pretty turned off by her quitting. But a better gauge for how this will hurt Palin’s future political career is my wife. She really liked Palin and she came home from work yesterday after hearing the news and her press event and said she sounded incoherent and her reasoning made no sense. If my wife is saying that… It may be over for her.

oddjob1138 on July 4, 2009 at 1:09 PM

Did you post exactly this yesterday, or you just working off a set of general ‘talking points’?

ProfessorMiao on July 4, 2009 at 2:12 PM

What in the Hell do you think Ferraro was going to say.

KBird on July 4, 2009 at 2:12 PM

You know the nation is in trouble when someone actually suggests that those defending life against the abortion industry profiteers have “gone too far”. Almost as creepy as if one were to suggest D-day went too far by interfering with the concentration camps’ business as usual thus thwarting the Final Solution. Give me convenience or give me death or something like that? Or gimme the convenience of a culture of death? Creepy.

viking01 on July 4, 2009 at 2:17 PM

I’ve noticed that the parrots are using words like “incoherent” and “erratic”.

If a man had done this, they would say he was “keeping his cards close to his chest.”

Seems parrots think poker is a man’s game.

ProfessorMiao on July 4, 2009 at 2:12 PM

No talking points. I posted something similar yesterday while my wife was at work. And then this today. I was quite frankly taken aback when my wife said that about Palin is all. Similar, not the same. I’m just a guy sitting at work on the 4th of July posting out of boredom and interest in the topic. Where would I get talking points? Sheesh.

oddjob1138 on July 4, 2009 at 2:18 PM

NOW I understand. Thanks AP.

Don’t you see?

Geraldine Ferraro says it’s over AND she said it on Fox.

/s

How can she possibly have a say in anything, especially energy policy?! Cap and trade ring a bell? The only one determining policy are the Soros’ of the world and they rule through their proxies, are *cough* elected officials.

I want a third party not tied to the establishment. The

joshlbetts on July 4, 2009 at 2:18 PM

Geraldine Ferraro is jealous, of the beloved and independent thinking, Sarah Palin. Ferraro didn’t complain that Barack Obama didn’t finish his term, as Senator. She is just another leftist hypocrite.

It appeared that Ferraro supported Sarah Palin simply to point out that she was the first woman to run for VP. All the Ferraro interviews discussing Sarah Palin seemed to veer away from Sarah Palin and return to that point.

Ferraro ought to consider that Sarah Palin may be crazy like a fox.

Good luck, Sarah!

AnninCA on July 4, 2009 at 2:06 PM

Should they be killed also? Better off dead was somewhat of a slogan during 1930s Germany. Not only did that fire up the discontents it got the ovens fired up too.

viking01 on July 4, 2009 at 2:19 PM

People, this isn’t part of some grand plan of hers. You don’t just quit abruptly without warning even your successor and announce with an incoherent speech if you’ve thought it through.

Apparently, you do. She’s cleared out the ethics stuff. Time to move on.

AnninCA on July 4, 2009 at 2:22 PM

I think she is a lot more effective for what ails us right now as a non-elected reformer than as an executive, and I think she realized that. She did a good job as governor of Alaska but realizes she can do more good for the country this way,..and the timing is right. Pundits just can’t understand someone living their principles and putting country above personal ambition, so that’s why it’s driving them crazy. They’re afraid she’s about to harness the masses.

a capella on July 4, 2009 at 2:23 PM

Seriously go to RCP and read the transcript of her speech. She’s clearly stating her intentions are to do what she can to help save our Nation. She’s no run of the mill ‘politician’. She is a Patriot who loves her Country and I believe that folks like her will lead us out of the abyss that is obama.

Key West Reader on July 4, 2009 at 2:24 PM

It looks like the Republican Party has been too busy licking their wounds from the last two elections to protect one of their own, so I don’t blame her for telling them where to put their job. They spend too much time attacking their OWN potential leaders and not enough time protecting them from the obscene hatred of the Left. The Democrats circle the wagons and protect every crook with a “D” after their name. Just look at them – Dodd, Rangle, Waters, Frank and about a dozen tax cheating cabinet members and what do the Dems do? They treat them like they are the Joan of Arc. On top of that they spend mega-millions on their “Destroy the Republicans” projects, where they know that Chicago style politics rules. “The ends justifies the means,” and to hell with principles and integrity. So if you want more of the same just go ahead, keep on doing what you are doing, and watch the rest of the country go down the toilet.

DL13 on July 4, 2009 at 2:27 PM

I listened to her speech on the radio. The whole thing. It was clear to me.

Her speech is coherent, and her reasons are consistent.

I noticed the entire speech was delivered without ahhhs, ummms, and teleprompters.

Saltysam on July 4, 2009 at 2:29 PM

I agree; this won’t play well for a significant portion of the electorate. I don’t blame her for leaving either, but it sure as hell won’t help her if she subsequently tries to come back and be a national player in the political scene.

I can respect the decision to pull out as a parent, etc – but I don’t need this kind of ‘mettle’ from a candidate. Thank you, no.

Midas on July 4, 2009 at 2:31 PM

Wherever and whenever the ‘Cuda resurfaces, it’s not likely to be where all the pundichum is floating. Wary by instinct but not experience, she had no way to anticipate the sharks’ numbers and appetite in national waters. (And Sid Blumenthal has barely even unpacked).

She is a conservative phenomenon ahead of her time. Her galvanizing presence and message are in no danger of being overwhelmed by this country’s looming prosperity. When the peculiar national taste for crap sandwiches encounters a long overdue death, the soup kitchens will be featuring sharks fin. And the female voice on the radio will have become a familiar one.

Barnestormer on July 4, 2009 at 2:32 PM

I thought it was just fine, too. I think the critics are mistaking their own shock at her move for problems in the speech. She really did manage to keep this under wraps.

The more I think about this, the more sense that makes. It’s never good to shock everyone. However, if she had telegraphed it, then they would have filed more ethics complaints.

I bet bucks that there’s a 30-day rule in Alaska that she’s managed to circumvent.

Well, the GOP did the same to the Dems when they were in office.

That’s exactly what we are all sick of.

It’s wasteful, negative, and hasn’t really worked out for anyone.

Judging from the Troll Explosion the last two days, there are a lot of “very concerned” Liberals out there.

kingsjester on July 4, 2009 at 1:04 PM

Some of them are and some aren’t trolls. It requires a lot of posts to separate the trolls from the real supporters of other candidates or the real uncommitted. I’m have difficulty.

It’s like a sniper that has gone rogue. Potential targets start staying indoors, and away from tall buildings. They protest loudly that either they have done nothing wrong, or that their target deserved the shots they, themselves, had taken.

The layers of deception and degrees of manipulation are very interesting when I can figure it out. And then, there’s the potential for unseen coordination between them. Somebody could do a thesis on internet trolling from monitoring this site. One heck of a lot of data to sort through, though.

Guys, stop finding excuses for and worshiping Sarah Palin. She’s not God. Face it, she made a decision that has destroyed her career in national politics, even though it may be a virtuous decision if we take her explanation at face value. Some of you are sounding like the Obama worshipers. It’s not rational.

MedSchoolCatholic on July 4, 2009 at 2:55 PM

1) The continuous SPAM (sordid progressive attack machine) was damaging the Palin admin’s ability to perform, plus a terrible defense expense for Alaska.
2) Palin will put her admin’s agenda above selfish interests. She leaves her staff and agenda in good hands.
3) Sarah and Family have shown they can take head shots like no one since Rocky Balboa. But she needs to be liberated from gubernatorial constraints to adequately respond with the body blows to Obama that the nation needs.
4) Palin has a new agenda that will knock your socks off!

Look for Palin to lead a consortium of business (US and Canadian) and Alaska State and Local entities in a Constitutional challenge to Federal control of oil and gas exploration and development. In an era where Obama and Clan aim to ram it to consumers, Palin will be his “thorn in the flesh” and everyman’s champion.

T J Green on July 4, 2009 at 2:56 PM

So much hope that the Palin reality will change… kind of pathetic to see some of the mental gyrations trying to frame this as a brilliant strategy.

Actually, I think it is rational. Traditional thought? She should “study,” “prove her mettle,” etc.

Meanwhile, in the real world, someone was abusing Alaska’s ethics laws to drown her in debt and destroy the state at the same time.

Why sit there and allow that to happen? She couldn’t even leave the state for one event without a charge filed that she wasn’t taking care of Alaska. LOL*

This makes more sense.

Must be nice to have a job where you can listen to a whole 20 minute televised speech that has nothing to do with your work and not get fired.

I’m of 2 minds about how this will play out, especially if she decides to run in 2012. Although I’m not at all sure that she intends to.

I was taken aback by her announcement, wasn’t expecting it, that’s for sure. But I didn’t find her speech incoherent in the least. She was very clear about her reasons for stepping down at this time.
