Video: Palin resigns; Video: Andrea Mitchell says sources tell her Palin’s out of politics

posted at 4:48 pm on July 3, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

There’s a lot of video coming but this should tide you over for a bit. I don’t follow her logic at the beginning here: Essentially, she says that once you’re a lame duck, the responsible thing to do is to get out of the way rather than go around milking the office while your influence diminishes. Does that mean presidents in their second term should quit early too? Instead of quitting, why not redouble your efforts to be an effective governor despite the lame-duck pressures working against you?

The crux of this is that she’s quitting because it’s in Alaska’s best interest, not her own. If it turns out this was nothing more than a way of clearing her schedule to start early on running for president, her primary opponents will make her eat those words.

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Update: Given the source, take this not with a grain of salt but a boulder of it.

Some have speculated in the past that Palin may be interested in running for president in 2012, but she did not mention running for another office at her press conference. Sources told NBC’s Andrea Mitchell that Palin is out of politics for good.

If it’s true, there must be a major scandal somewhere in the shadows here. If it’s not true, well, that’s MSNBC for you.

Update: Real Clear Politics has video of Mitchell’s report, including the detail that Palin’s allegedly told her top backers to go ahead and commit to other candidates for 2012. Bill Kristol thinks resigning now could actually be a bold gambit to free herself up for an intense presidential campaign, but I think she’s following more of a Nixonian strategy here. I.e. it could be she’s burned out on politics and dispirited by all the crap she’s put up with it and wants to get away at an opportune moment. If, as is likely, The One wins a second term, the GOP will be so dejected that it’ll happily give her a second look as a potential savior in 2016, much as it did with Nixon after he lost the 1960 presidential election and 1962 California gubernatorial race. The question is, what does she do with herself in the meantime?

Good point.

Many of you would like to see her make a run for 2012. Why? Look, I admire her and would giver her all of my support. But the media and hollywood would NEVER let her win. Her image is damaged beyond repair. Even when she really did nothing wrong or said nothing ‘dumber’ than the likes of Obama and Biden, she was literally destroyed by the media and hollywood.

They are already slamming her for this and will surely destroy her should she run for 2012. There are tens of millions in this country that eat up the media and hollywood garbage. She will not have a chance.

Her running for 2012 will be an automatic win for Obama. Sad, but true.

bucsox79 on July 3, 2009 at 5:49 PM

So by Palin’s logic: Bush and Cheney probably should have resigned early because they were lame ducks and were unpopular and constantly being attacked. That would have stupid.

terryannonline on July 3, 2009 at 5:44 PM

Oh brother, a little different position. Bush & Cheney were completing a 2nd term in office. They could not run for President again. Cheney knew he was not running for Pres. Different situation all together.

izoneguy on July 3, 2009 at 5:49 PM

But why wouldn’t she at least finish her term?

Magnus on July 3, 2009 at 5:36 PM

Because she has to spend far too much time dealing with problems not related to the governorship and she sees that as bad for Alaska. She said that very clearly.

She could no longer perform her duties, so she resigned.

Easy Peasy. Now President Obama did not perform his duties as senator when running for office. Wasn’t that a broken promise. And we all know that politicians Always keep their promises. SO Weird!

joshlbetts on July 3, 2009 at 5:50 PM

She should go to a foreign policy think tank

blatantblue on July 3, 2009 at 5:50 PM

That’s ridiculous. Every ethnic group has their underclass that the majority find worthy of scorn.

That’s all the label describes and any attempt to read into it further in absence of corroborating information is nothing more than intellectually dishonest race baiting. You said it yourself – you don’t know that he’s a bigot. But you’ll happily attribute bigoted overtones to his language so that you, the interpreter, can gain power over the narrative.

This trick gets pulled in the media and even nominal conservatives need to knock it off.

TheUnrepentantGeek on July 3, 2009 at 5:20 PM

Then why is there the need to specify the race of this so-called human trash? Using someone’s race and/or ethnicity as a descriptor when their race or ethnicity is not relevant just might indicate a bias. This becomes very apparent when using “white” as the descriptor.

The white journalist said “blah blah blah.” The white Governor from Alaska resigned today. Todd Pallin, a white man, should have stomped David Letterman’s lights out. Etc and so on.

Google the phrase “black trash” or “Irish trash.” There is no comparison to the usage of the ugly phrase “white trash.” I don’t mind that you feel the need to use these words. I hope you don’t mind that I am compelled to point out my perceptions of their impact.

The Race Card on July 3, 2009 at 5:50 PM

I don’t understand why any of the pundits, right or left, are trying to remark on this new development. No one knows what Gov. Palin’s intentions are but the governor and her family and all the speculation in the world will just make them look foolish in the end. It seems to lessen their credibility to be unable to wait and see.

I don’t care what the media says or does. She stands for what I believe is right. So, she’ll get my money and my vote and I will not be dictated to by the greasy political chattering class.

joshlbetts on July 3, 2009 at 5:52 PM

But why wouldn’t she at least finish her term?

Magnus on July 3, 2009 at 5:36 PM

It gives her more time to campaign and study up on the issues. Also, how many more ethics complaints would have been filed against her in the meantime? She’s being chained to the Gov’s desk while other potential candidates try and get the ‘leg-up’ by campaigning around the country. I also feel as if she thinks she’s accomplished all that she’s going to accomplish as Gov., so why sit there for an extra year and a half falling farther and farther behind for 2012?

LiquidH2O on July 3, 2009 at 5:43 PM

But she made a commitment to the Alaskan people. It be one thing if she was actually running at this time but she’s not and it seems like she is leaving Alaska hanging because she can’t be bothered anymore and wants to do something else. Its like when McCain suspended his campaign to solve the financial crisis. The idea was noble but it didn’t make sense. What if she becomes President and the going gets tough or if she has an all Dem congress to deal with? She can’t quit in the middle of her term and decide she rather work on the local level.

The mission of the Donks, Lefties and Queen Bee Feminists has been to destroy Sarah Palin and here family since day 1.

The piling on by Johnny Mac through his surrogates was the last straw.

Thank you, Gov. Paln, for lifting the veil regarding how much hate there is out there for a true, second wave feminist, both from the Left and the Right.

izoneguy on July 3, 2009 at 5:56 PM

Good grief. I’ve not seen so much handwringing since my Naval OCS class was busted by our DI for sneaking pizzas after lights out one weekend.

Look Sarah is not out of politics. She is now able to attack Obama and rally the GOP. She will become a factor in the 2010 midterms. She is now free to become a general pain in the ass for Obama and the Democrats. Will she run in 2012 maybe, maybe not, but that is a long way away and Obama has plenty of damage to do yet. When the time comes she will still have her base of support and if she is not on the ticket she will be kingmaker.

Goodness stop all the handwringing, you all sound like democrats.

Good reason to step down and do some damage repair in the next 2 years.

Beside when asked if she would run for prez after the last election she said if she ever did it would be the most unconvetional campaign. This could be the kick off.

Let’s hope it’s not The Day the Music Died. But you’re right. Even Huckabee just now on Fox, all he wanted to say was “politics is tough”. Really Rev? How many Vanity Fair smear jobs did you get hit with? How many national late-night hosts took shots at your kids? Palin didn’t need protection because she’s a woman. But she deserved the GOPs help because she was taking those shots for the party.

Put another way, how did Sarah Palin manipulate McCain into choosing her? She didn’t. That was his choice. Her acceptance of his gracious offer is what she did to deserve all the absolute CRAP that’s been thrown at her ever since. How dare she say yes to the GOP’s Presidential nominee! How dare a mere ALASKAN think she’s worthy to be in a national campaign. Why, she didn’t even go to an Ivy League school! That’s the attitude that’s been curling the stomachs of lots of GOP rank and file voters. We’ve sucked it up and pulled the lever for the likes of Arlen Specter, or John Cornyn, or Eric Cantor (hey, try reading a bill). And when one of US, a regular gal, gets the call up to the big leagues, how do they reward our loyalty? Gossip and slander. Well you know what? Maybe instead of holding our noses and voting for the Lesser Evil, we’ll just stock up on guns and ammo until the GOP decides the little guy is worth fighting for again.

People need to pay attention;

Listen to what she’s saying! Better yet, pay attention to what we already know! We know the donks pretty much put a hit out on Gov Palin since august of 2008, we know they have trashed every step she takes, her children, her life, her education, her policies, her beliefs, her ethics, her clothing, her hobbies, her life style,..every aspect of her life, trashed, and dished out in the papers, the news and on-line! Palin, unlike hussein didn’t have someone paying all her bills, paying off people, appeasing the media, the woman had all out war called against her by the donks! Didn’t matter if it was true or not, it was still posted, printed or aired!
Now we hear the donks coming out and speaking more against her,….this from a party who cries foul at a name, a gesture or an unintended accusation! This from a party of higher taxes, appeasing terrorist and voting against America! Nothing that represents anything about Gov Palin!!
Americans should be outraged at the aggression put towards this woman, and more-so hearing the ignorance spewing out from the mouths of those who tried so hard to bring her down,….find ONE,…ONE donk who could have or would have put up a fight, like Gov Palin has?!! Better yet, where is the same information hunt for hussein??WHERE???
Conservatives/Republicans are not the party of appeasers,…it’s time we STOP appeasing the donks/liberals/P.C and put an end to this hypocrisy!!

I just think maybe people need to see that Sarah Palin is human being and a person. I feel bad for her if she because President. If she doesn’t solve all the wills of the world in her first month in office people are going to either eat her alive or slit her wrist. I thinking pinning your hopes on one person to save America and thinking if this person were in charge things would turn into Utopia and she is somehow She-Ra the Obama slayer is a little nutty.

You need many leaders and many saviors.

I think that is why people are ready to commit Hari Kari here because they’ve poor all hopes and dreams into this one person.

Well I’m off this topic but I wish her well on her new adventure and I hope that the disgraceful way the media treats high level women and their children in politics will not continue.

Because it’s a phrase in pop-culture, and you know that. No, there isn’t a direct corollary (e.g. Black Trash) but if you ask anyone from a particular ethnicity what their underclass is called, chances are they’ve got a label. Would you prefer Redneck? It’s basically the same thing.

People sneering, even people in her own party, idiot reporters taking jabs at her and her family.

I have been watching politics for years and I have never seen anyone subjected to this kind of nonstop malice. Even Bush had to become President before they really loosed the hounds on him. All Sarah Palin had to do, was accept McCain’s offer and run for national office.

Next thing you know nasty old men like Letterman are making cracks about her daughters.

I’ve been watching ‘the fall of the roman empire’ on the history channel (amazing something on there other than hitler)

Anyway, about 400 AD a general took control of most of the empire. He was only concerned about his own power, not the citizens of rome. He basically sat by as the barbarians began to move in. No one leader rose to save rome.

A bit after that, a Roman called ORestes tried to revive Rome (and further his own ambitions). He failed, primarily because rome was pretty much wrecked by that time. They had traded land to the barbarians but every time they did so, they had less income. So, they had to sell off more land resulting in a vicious cycle.

Keep in mind that, at the time of Christ, Rome’s population (not the empire) was over a million people. That dwindled to something like 20 thousand in the Middle ages.

In the last days of the Roman empire, the citizens just could not imagine that the empire could fall even though the signs were all around them.

We need a leader to go head to head with Obama and the left. The Bob Doles and John McCains just don’t have the fire to unite people. I’m just hoping that Sarah stays visible and active.

If she is out of politics, I don’t think it is the Lord’s doing. Look more to the guy with the horns, pointy tail and pitchfork.

Look at what is in there now. Who do you think won that one? God or the devil? Do you think God would support a guy who fought to allow babies to be thrown into closets to die of starvation dehydration and exposure?? That sure as hell isn’t the god I know. I would guess that old Beezelbub’s barbed thingy was standing at full attention after this election.

bullseye on July 3, 2009 at 6:29 PM

Because she has to spend far too much time dealing with problems not related to the governorship and she sees that as bad for Alaska. She said that very clearly.

progressoverpeace on July 3, 2009 at 5:50 PM

No crap. I was posting in the dark for about an hour until I watched the entire video. I cannot understand all of the prognostication. She was very clear.

csdeven on July 3, 2009 at 6:31 PM

If she is running for POTUS, this is the stupidest thing she’s ever done. Quit?? Because the job of governor of Alaska is too taxing? Yeah, that makes me want you as President. Will she quit that too if it gets tough? She is a very loose cannon and one has to question what scandal/depression is going on there. She just wrote the DNC’s attack ads if she dares run now. Buh Bye, Sarah.

dcwvu on July 3, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Does Andrea Mitchell expect anyone to believe Sarah Palin’s inner circle would discuss Palin’s future with her or her network?

lonestar1 on July 3, 2009 at 6:32 PM

He’s good at that. I want to like Huck (even though I’m well past supporting him for Prez), but sometimes he makes it really hard.

petefrt on July 3, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Yeah. People talk about Romney’s slickness….Huck reminds me of Elmer Gantry.

Creepy.

csdeven on July 3, 2009 at 6:33 PM

If, as is likely, The One wins a second term…

You’re kidding, right?

You must be kidding.

cheeflo on July 3, 2009 at 6:36 PM

Never forgive or forget what Sullivan and the Trig Truthers did here, because they will attempt it again.

Mr. Joe on July 3, 2009 at 6:40 PM

A sad day, but a smart move.

The media will talk about this for days, weeks, months. Her mere presence at any candidate rally will remind voters “this is what the elite politicians have done.” Attack ads on candidates she supports will be neutralized as a clear manifestation of more of the same.

Her stepping down for the sake of Alaska sure will be mocked now by the left. But in doing so, she has made herself a walking, living example of the gutter politics we have — and a reminder how important it is that we “build up” and not “tear down”.

She’s moved herself into a potentially HUGE position regarding US politics. No, it may not be the Presidency (jury’s out), but I don’t think that’s her goal.

lansing quaker on July 3, 2009 at 6:42 PM

To say once and for all:

Palin, Romney, Huck, Rudi, and anyone else….OUT!

I was right about McCain, and if he weren’t pressured to pick Palin instead of his first choice…Charlie Crist…he’d be POTUS right now.

So I offer you up the winning team for 2012: Boehner/Graham

Mark my words.

JetBoy on July 3, 2009 at 6:44 PM

A sad day, but a smart move.

lansing quaker on July 3, 2009 at 6:42 PM

Sad? This is the best news conservatives have gotten since Obama has been sham in chief. It might be sad for Sarah but the people of Alaska know that she has a higher calling. If Sarah does not act to confront Obama now then there might not be an Alaska by 2012. Alaska relys on oil & gas production for it’s survival. Obama is trying as hard as he can to shut down oil & gas production.
The future of America depends on oil & gas production – green weenies won’t cut it.

izoneguy on July 3, 2009 at 6:47 PM

Goodness stop all the handwringing, you all sound like democrats.

elduende on July 3, 2009 at 5:56 PM

I believe you are exactly right. Sarah speaks and people listen. She draws huge crowds. Someone with some backbone needs to get out there and kick ass. She’s the one.

It seemed pretty clear even before FNC ran the second tape. The second tape clinched it. Palin is ON and coming soon to a city near us all.

Roundup of reaction to Palin resignation. Most recent update is Bill Kristol on Fox News earlier:

The blogosphere’s gone topsy-turvy with its latest parlour game
Some dress themselves in a Swami’s crown as a tribute to their own want of fame
Talking about this Sarah Palin from night to morn
They seem to think that in this woman the Devil Herself had been reborn
But the jackanapes are always runnin’ round with empty blows
It’s unfortunate to note that concern for their mental state just grows and grows

PercyB on July 3, 2009 at 6:55 PM

Not writing Crist out completely yet…I could always change my mind should something come up. Could go Crist/Boehner (got a nice ring to it!) Hmmmmm….

JetBoy on July 3, 2009 at 6:55 PM

csdeven on July 3, 2009 at 6:31 PM

just got around to watching it myself. I may be wrong but it seems like she’s cleaning her rifles and honeing her knives.

There could be an issue with campaign financing where being a governor restricts your ability to fundraise (unless you are obama where you can get billions in illegal overseas donations and no one blinks). I think we just have to sit tight until after the end of July or perhaps the end of august before we see where she is heading.

bullseye on July 3, 2009 at 6:55 PM

TMK on July 3, 2009 at 6:58 PM

He said that he doesn’t see Sarah as competition, but rather as a fallen comrade. What a sneaky two faced back stabbing bastard.

csdeven on July 3, 2009 at 6:26 PM

Just another typical politician, really. Which might be part of Sarah’s appeal. All of the chattering nabobs of the D.C. elite are trying to figure out what she’s doing. It’s like me trying to figure out what a lobbyists next move is; their ways are alien to me, I’m as likely to correctly predict the actions of an the 2031 hurricane cycle.

And for the folks who are predicting Palin’s demise because of her stepping down; how did Romney transition from Gov. to Presidential candidate? It’s not like a politician stepping down in order to concentrate on politics would be some earthshattering new thing.

I personally think she’s stepping out of the sniper’s sights, to allow her family to be a normal family. But the truth is, nobody knows except her. And maybe she doesn’t even know yet. But if she comes back, there will be a lot of people happy to join her in taking on the status quo.

hawksruleva on July 3, 2009 at 6:59 PM

people are calling this rambling? She is totally clear here and without a script or teleprompter like Obama.

Palin is doing what she’s doing for the reasons she says. She is a splendid American. We so used to liars and schemers we can’t imagine somebody being genuine… PATHETIC.

Americans should be outraged at the aggression put towards this woman, and more-so hearing the ignorance spewing out from the mouths of those who tried so hard to bring her down,

christene on July 3, 2009 at 5:59 PM

You know what Ed? Read Christene’s post in it’s entirety. You’re a big fan of, ‘The Stoning of Soyraya M’ right?

Tell me what the difference is in your opinion.

This country, the USA, has figuratively done the same thing to a decent citizen, and being a woman made the difference.

Where is your outrage?

You ignored my question about Crist. New York flights to Florida are available right?

Americannodash on July 3, 2009 at 7:05 PM

This is like a Vaudeville divorce for the liberal media—Someone is now going to lose themselves a show. Without their favorite target being “legal” for a critical amount of time, media entities that made their living bashing Palin will either refocus or wither on the vine.

She has a bad public image now, made by media entities that all take direction from the Democrat Party. By 2012, these entities will either turn on the Democrats to survive (hence not getting the latest talking points) or die. Then when she comes back, she may get much fairer treatment.
