Video: Palin resigns; Video: Andrea Mitchell says sources tell her Palin’s out of politics
posted at 4:48 pm on July 3, 2009 by Allahpundit
There’s a lot of video coming but this should tide you over for a bit. I don’t follow her logic at the beginning here: Essentially, she says that once you’re a lame duck, the responsible thing to do is to get out of the way rather than go around milking the office while your influence diminishes. Does that mean presidents in their second term should quit early too? Instead of quitting, why not redouble your efforts to be an effective governor despite the lame-duck pressures working against you?
The crux of this is that she’s quitting because it’s in Alaska’s best interest, not her own. If it turns out this was nothing more than a way of clearing her schedule to start early on running for president, her primary opponents will make her eat those words.
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
Update: Given the source, take this not with a grain of salt but a boulder of it.
Some have speculated in the past that Palin may be interested in running for president in 2012, but she did not mention running for another office at her press conference. Sources told NBC’s Andrea Mitchell that Palin is out of politics for good.
If it’s true, there must be a major scandal somewhere in the shadows here. If it’s not true, well, that’s MSNBC for you.
Update: Real Clear Politics has video of Mitchell’s report, including the detail that Palin’s allegedly told her top backers to go ahead and commit to other candidates for 2012. Bill Kristol thinks resigning now could actually be a bold gambit to free herself up for an intense presidential campaign, but I think she’s following more of a Nixonian strategy here. I.e. it could be she’s burned out on politics and dispirited by all the crap she’s put up with it and wants to get away at an opportune moment. If, as is likely, The One wins a second term, the GOP will be so dejected that it’ll happily give her a second look as a potential savior in 2016, much as it did with Nixon after he lost the 1960 presidential election and 1962 California gubernatorial race. The question is, what does she do with herself in the meantime?

If so, then her life and the lives of her family members will be infinitely better from now on. Smartest thing she’s done.
If not, I still support her. I’d vote for her for any office.

Got to love this. In one fell swoop, Palin completely moved the Big 0 completely out of the headlines. Has any one else in politics been able to achieve that? The answer is no. It is going to be very interesting to watch her next move. We have not heard the last of the Cuda!

Obama was glad to see Sanford implode, although the timing could have been better for him. Don’t get me wrong – I genuinely like her as a person – but you can be sure Obama regrets Sarah being out of the race more than her utmost supporters. There will be stronger opposition in 2012.

Obama’s kids are the exception, and Obama wasn’t the frontrunner when she ran for governor. We largely had no clue how his family would be treated at that point, so we had no reason to believe they’d be treated differently.
Bush’s grown daughters were savaged. Chelsea Clinton was attacked. Amy Carter was attacked, too. The left went after the children of Santorum and Roberts. The list goes on and on.

This is why Conservative women dont go into politics (ask Ann Colter or Michelle Malkin or any others). They will be targeted by the Right for “abandoning their families for their political asperations” and attack by the left for “Not being a woman and caring about women’s issues”.
Hoefully in time our country can get over that stigma.
William Amos on July 3, 2009 at 5:24 PM
I am just sick that the MSM and our poltical elite have succeeded in driving her from the stage with their continuous, vicious sniping and smear attacks. Her remarks today show just how hurtful and overwhelming the attacks must have been for her and her family. The fact that the GOP elite have publicly turned on her too was likely the final straw. Her remark about handing off the ball to allow the team to win sounds like pressure from the Goldbergs and the Krauthammers may have gotten to her.
Maybe she is doing the right thing. Politics is not really a healthy place for people who desire to change the world with “a servant’s heart”. She may find her place working for organizations that support families with members with Down’s syndrome. Good luck and God bless to a genuinely good person.
inmypajamas on July 3, 2009 at 5:24 PM
In fairness to simon there were comments before that that hinted strongly that he has a strong liking for children and not in a good way. Uncalled for in both cases.
Cindy Munford on July 3, 2009 at 5:25 PM
Ameripundit, I agree somewhat with your point about ‘paying attention,’ although the attacks on the Palin family were especially vicious and unrelenting. There is a world of difference between children of Republican candidates and Democratical candidates.
I don’t see her getting totally out of politics, I think PMSNBC is practicing wishful thinking, but at this point I sure wouldn’t blame her.

Why is it when Krauthammer gives and honest critique of Obama he is a genius and the “Hammer” and
And then if he criticizes St. Sarah, he is liberal scum?
Methinks many of you have the same Savior Complex with Palin that people have with Obama. Sarah is the Savior of the country and the republican party and turn the country into a conservative paradise and once she because President Reagan with smile down from the heavens and rainbows and deer for hunting with be abundant.
Sarah is a great woman. I admire her commitment to family. And her personhood. But she wasn’t ready to be president and this move will absolutely curb any chances for that happening in the near future. You can’t just quit when the going gets tough. Because she is a woman she doesn’t need to be coddled and treated like a weakling. Any politician going into the political spotlight is going to get anal raped by the media. Especially if they have a pregnant teenage daughter and a loser maybe son in law with a drug addict mother. If she because a soldier in the conservative fight she will get attacked just as well and people still be going after her.
As a woman this bothers me. It seems like an emotional move. I’m hoping its more than that.

I swoon with unrequited love.
Does anyone else think this is sad evidence that good people don’t run for office because they don’t want to put up with the crap that Palin has gotten over the last 9 months.
Sackett on July 3, 2009 at 5:26 PM
Scandal? I don’t think so – if there were one, someone could well blackmail her I suppose but a scandal on Saracuda would be too good to keep quiet – even if she complied with the blackmail – which I think she’ smart enough not too.
Good for Alaska? Well – I think so. Clearly she’s boxed in and can’t do much to position for a run for President in 2012. On any occasion that she steps out – she’s hit with an ethics charge by the leftists who are pumping large sums of money into Alaska to oppose her in the media, in politics, and in the courts. So it IS a good thing for Alaskans to get a Governor in office who’s not constantly fighting a running battle with the loony left.
We’ll know soon enough. I anticipate two weeks tops after she leaves office (maybe less) and if she’s seriously going to make a run – then you’ll see her visibility increase. That’s when you’ll know that Andrea Mitchell was wrong (again).
I hope she runs – we’ll see. Actually – I’d like to see her leave the GOP and found a new CONSERVATIVE PARTY – one not plagued with elitist baggage and led by Ayatollah’s like Grand Ayatollah John Cornyn.
It’s time for a new party folks – the two we’ve had for well over a century are done – stick a fork in ‘em. The problem is – a new party will require someone with some steam to kick it off and lead it – someone like Saracuda. If she put together a good team and lured in some good Conservatives from the GOP – the GOP is done – will eventually be relegated to running McCain centrists with a watered down conservative “anything goes though” platform – which is what the Ayatollah’s really want to do.
Crossing my fingers on Palin – we’ll see.
HondaV65 on July 3, 2009 at 5:26 PM
She’ll be back.
the_nile on July 3, 2009 at 5:26 PM
Personally, I think if she accomplished what she wanted to accomplish while Governor, and she wants Alaska to be able to focus on Alaskan goals instead of Palin-mania, she’s made a great decision. Why should Alaskans have to pay for legal defense of ethics complaints generated by political operative? Why should they have to be distracted by David Letterman or Variety smear jobs?
Would most modern politicians have made this choice? No. Would reluctant servants like George Washington have made this choice? Absolutely.
Personally, I think she could play a huge role in the GOP without ever running for office again. You think she won’t bring people in to rallies? You think her endorsement of a GOP Senator wouldn’t help their election or re-election bid? I think she has endless opportunities. When it became clear that there was going to be a continuing trickle of negative comments about her, the normal strategy of honing your political craft in the relative obscurity of the Alaskan governership went out the window. Who knows – maybe she’ll go volunteer for a conservative group. Or work on GOTV stuff for the GOP. Or work with the Tea Party movement to find fiscal conservatives to run against RINOs of the world.

I was afraid of this and it has come to pass. She’s the political equivalent of Edith Wharton’s Lily Bart. Someone whose sense of honor is so acute that she’ll try and rise above it all and that very honor inflames a cynical world determined to see her punished. The House of Mirth is a quinteseential American tragedy and today we have the political equivalent.
Congratulations, America, you’ve just managed to beat the one good person in politics.

Jaynie59 on July 3, 2009 at 5:27 PM
Oh, so she was just naive to think that Republicans and Democrats are treated equally by the media. Gotcha.
And, like I said above, Biden and Obama weren’t even frontrunners when she ran. In 2006, you look back at the attacks on the Bush twins, the Santorum kids, et all. While the media attacks Republican children more, political children in general aren’t off-limits by the vile machines.

At the worst, he is a RINO…and? I mean, wow. He LETS you post here. My gosh. What is most likely is that he has legitimate reasons for (if at all) disliking Sarah Palin. Most of us have our favorite candidates and most of us have strong opinions about them and against others. This is borderline psychotic…and a little too much like Obot behavior for my comfort. SHE WAS NOT ANOINTED. She was/is an option. Why you all treat her like she is perfect OR that anyone cannot have a legitimate issue with her, is juvenile.
At the least, could you not try to treat your host as if you were visiting his home? If you dislike his hospitality so much, why not just leave? Grow up.

One last word here though – if Palin is leaving politics because she’s tired of running from the liberal arrows …
Then the GOP can go and stick my vote – they’ll never have it again – even at a local level. And the reason for that is the Ayatollah’s in the GOP have done nothing to defend her … and in fact have snidely sniped at her from the anonymous shadows.
I suspect there are many who feel the same as I. The GOP better hope she isn’t quitting to get peace from the loony leftists. They’d better damn hope – because there are a lot of folks who will start going hog hunting and forget about engaging in politics for good.
