Video: Palin resigns; Video: Andrea Mitchell says sources tell her Palin’s out of politics

posted at 4:48 pm on July 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

There’s a lot of video coming but this should tide you over for a bit. I don’t follow her logic at the beginning here: Essentially, she says that once you’re a lame duck, the responsible thing to do is to get out of the way rather than go around milking the office while your influence diminishes. Does that mean presidents in their second term should quit early too? Instead of quitting, why not redouble your efforts to be an effective governor despite the lame-duck pressures working against you?

The crux of this is that she’s quitting because it’s in Alaska’s best interest, not her own. If it turns out this was nothing more than a way of clearing her schedule to start early on running for president, her primary opponents will make her eat those words.

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Update: Given the source, take this not with a grain of salt but a boulder of it.

Some have speculated in the past that Palin may be interested in running for president in 2012, but she did not mention running for another office at her press conference. Sources told NBC’s Andrea Mitchell that Palin is out of politics for good.

If it’s true, there must be a major scandal somewhere in the shadows here. If it’s not true, well, that’s MSNBC for you.

Update: Real Clear Politics has video of Mitchell’s report, including the detail that Palin’s allegedly told her top backers to go ahead and commit to other candidates for 2012. Bill Kristol thinks resigning now could actually be a bold gambit to free herself up for an intense presidential campaign, but I think she’s following more of a Nixonian strategy here. I.e. it could be she’s burned out on politics and dispirited by all the crap she’s put up with it and wants to get away at an opportune moment. If, as is likely, The One wins a second term, the GOP will be so dejected that it’ll happily give her a second look as a potential savior in 2016, much as it did with Nixon after he lost the 1960 presidential election and 1962 California gubernatorial race. The question is, what does she do with herself in the meantime?

The Democrat-controlled media has hounded a capable and ethical woman from elected office by vicious slander and forcing her to spend her time and money defending against politically motivated ethics suits. At the same time it shelters from all criticism a virtual unknown who has almost no paper trail and many shady connections that it elected to the highest office in the land.

Time to stop people, what’s that sound… everybody look what’s going ’round.

I think she got tired of fighting ethics charges by the fascists in Juneau and decided to run a flier by some lower 48 think tanks and they said their payroll had a spot.

I think she’ll do some high end speeches, make some dough, then work as a spokeman for some place like Heritage, something like that.

She’s done with politics, from the running side of it at least.

Ed I don’t know how likely that second term is. I believe demographic moronics are there, but if He keeps digging at this furious rate a lot of Joes are going to be in such a deep hole that anger will start to boil. Many of my liberal colleagues, if their health care is taxed, or their energy bills get even higher, coupled with more layoffs monthly, are admitting they might have made a mistake. That’s HUGE! The One will have done a lot of more damage than Carter in a short amount of time because of the one party rule, but maybe by sheer scale of the damage he will undo himself despite the demographics. Maybe it’s Romneys turn, but the RNC is SO tarnished. IMO Saras not a factor just a distraction, 3 min pkg. for Andrea, 5 for ashley banfield, and the whole week for olberman.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s out of politics now. It was getting her nowhere but in debt and her children the butt of nationwide jokefests by adults. I think she’ll do what she does best, and capitalize on her popularity and earn some serious coin. I also have this hunch that somehow she is going to be teaming up with Rush Limbaugh.

therationalactor on July 3, 2009 at 4:51 PM

Dude, go sell crazy somewhere else. When has an independent EVER….EVER been a seriously challenger? George Wallace is the only I recall getting a significant # of electoral votes. When was the last time a 3rd party candidate won the presidency? It was….uh…never! You Ron Paulites need to pull your heads out. If he ever wants to be taken seriously he needs to get nominated by either the Dems or the GOP. Palin is smarter than to think of running as a third party candidate. She’d be better off not running.

Let’s see… a speech that is

1. From the heart
2. Has actual content
3. Is not read by wagging one’s head from teletubbie to teletubbie.
4. Has no Ericksonian or Neural Linguistic Programming.
5. Was not marred by a bunch of Uhms, and Errs and Uhhs
6. Did not result in her bowing to a foreign prince or king
7. Did not insult any of our main allies.

Compare and contrast that with Obumbles (Hope the orignal poster of that moniker doesn’t mind me appropriating it)

BTW – I don’t think Neocon fits her. However, if she were to leave politics, it would be one less person to stand in the way of our road to a facsist dictatorship.

bullseye on July 3, 2009 at 9:29 PM

Good. One less neoconservative in politics.

Just a little education for ya: Palin is not a neoconservative. A neo is someone who used to be a Socialist, but became a conservative. Like Podhoretz or Irving Kristol.

I know for Lefties and squishy Independents, it feels good to throw the word around, but you have your head up your butt on this one.

I do agree with you about the speech, though: a disaster.

guntotinglibertarian on July 3, 2009 at 9:59 PM

I suppose I would be wrong assuming Obama was going to choose her for energy czar…

The question is, what does she do with herself in the meantime?

The GOP could use her to set up the next election…she may not want to run, but she could participate.
She could be the point person on energy, choosing people, allowing her to be used as a “lightning rod”, while lining up other people to run.
But then that would be to logical, and take organization…a couple of things the Republican’s have been missing lately.

right2bright on July 3, 2009 at 10:03 PM

I don’t see where the confusion is…she knows Alaska won’t get what they need from the feds unless she steps down; she is fed up with the attacks on her family, and when she is out of politics she can lash back as a citizen; her heart isn’t in it, so she is in essence a “lame duck”, she doesn’t want to coast; she has other plans that we will find out about in the future; her family comes first, and they obviously have voiced their opinion; pretty obvious and straightforward.

right2bright on July 3, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Why not? Her life has been reduced to battling one unfair attack after another. That has to be hell on her and her family, and it sure doesn’t make her job any easier.

No kidding. I’m sure she didn’t sign up for this kind character assasintation. Sure, some will say it comes with the territory. But, unlike Barry, McCain, Romney, Billary, Biden, Huckabee, ad nauseum, all she did was answer the call of her party to serve as Vice President, if elected. She didn’t seek the office, but rather did what she thought would be best for her country by saying yes. I don’t blame her for saying “Screw this shtuff! Later!”

Fed45 on July 3, 2009 at 10:18 PM

H. Ross Perot. If he hadn’t gone all erratic towards the end, he very well might have one that 3-way contest.

guntotinglibertarian on July 3, 2009 at 9:52 PM

But he didn’t, did he? I wasn’t asking about what if’s. I was asking about what has happened. Hell, Wallace did better than Perot did. So, my point remains. No third party candidate has ever been considered seriously by the majority of the voters, and never will. In the end, they will always be outspent.

Fed45 on July 3, 2009 at 10:21 PM

The American left made public life unbearable for an officeholder and candidate of the right, and I’m not aware that any of them has suffered for it. This must have been quite a satisfying victory for the left, and an easy one at that, inasmuch as it took little more than a united, persistent hail of public insult and blame.

No one was punished and made an example, so it seems certain they’ll do it again.

I think that if we name an aircraft carrier after Palin, we should also name a ship after obmama.

Here are the particulars.

1. It should be a holding tank barge. Just like obama, it would be full of you know what.

2. The armament would consist of nail bombs provided by his good buddy William Ayers.

3. The on board chaplain would be rev wright with an amplifier shouting “God Damn America” for services every day

4. The ship would supposedly be built in Hawaii but most likely it would be secretely built in Kenya.

5. The captains station would have quadruple redundant teleprompters.

6. The ship would be bought and paid for by George Soros.

7. Instead of breaking a bottle of champagne over the bow for christening, barney frank would give a speech after having a drink and simply slobber over the bow.

8. Saluting the colors will be non standard. All personell will instead grab their crotch just like obmama does.

His popularity, from what I gather, is based upon the left’s perception of him as a “nice guy”. That’s only going to carry so far. When the other shoe drops, you may be eating your words.

One can only hope…

Not going through all the comments, so should this be a repeat, apologies, but this is further underscoring of McCain’s judgment in the campaign, eh? Nothwithstanding the strong headwinds he faced in any event, he had better choices for a running mate, and his behavior following the financial crisis triggered by the Lehman Brothers collapse plus this choice made it easier for O(ne)B(ig)A($$)M(istake,)A(merica).

Did you hear that sound?

Friday will be forever remembered by me not as the day that Sarah resigned, but as the day that she threw down the gauntlet and began her national career of returning America to its roots.

Across the blog-o-sphere were cheers as people came to realize that the last remaining conservative leader cast off her shackles so she could continue her fight against political corruption, insider politics, and media bias.

The sound we all heard also resonated in the White House as they came to realize a real Americans just became free to fight against their America destroying politics, and cowardly socialist revolution.

Amongst those making that revolting noise were the beltway insiders on both sides of the isle, Congress, the faux independants, the weak kneed moderates, and the socialist media.

As they were gearing up to celebrade their day of Obama Dependance they heard the lone voice of conservative ideology tell the World that she was now free to take the fight to the next level …

and the sound of a collective crapping of the pants was heard.

Sarah 2012!

The MSM can feel proud of their efforts in helping to make it impossible for the Governor of Alaska to do her job as a servant to that state. When in the past has a un-elected VP candidate been so harassed by the media, after the election passed?
-
I for one am hoping that Sarah will find a place in the political system where she can continue to be a force to recon with. She did the right thing here; she is not that important to Alaska, and the constant attacks on her by libturds with big press and TV megaphones were damaging to her state. Also, her family did not bargain for becoming daily targets either… Shame on all who have defamed her children so as to make political points.
-
I for one do not think she should just walk away, but rather a change of game plan that is more in tune with the realities of the playing field would be awesome.
-
God bless Sarah, and her family.

That spurred this terrifying thought: The lesson that the ruthless corners of the political world will take from the rise, fall, and departure of Sarah Palin that if you attack a politician’s children nastily enough and relentlessly enough, you can get anybody to quit.

The Campaign Spot

Of course, some are immune to that by not having kids. Too bad beagles can’t be slandered. They do not care. They eat their own poop you know. Some of their owners should too (since they already roll around in it and throw it at people they disagree with).

What is it about Sarah that just drives left of center, Left, Far Left, Center, right of center crazy? I believe it is panic. She is someone who knows what she is doing, HAS done something in public life (unlike an un-named president) is smart as hell(unlike our vice president) can draw a big crowd of enthusiastic voters (unlike a recent Republican candidate). NoDonkey on July 4, 2009 at 10:48 PM

I saw this in one of the updates here;

If, as is likely, The One wins a second term,

And then I looked at who wrote this and realized it fits. As an independent I hope that one of the parties will actually field a conservative Presidential candidate in 2012. Seeing as the Democrats are owned by the radical progressives the Republicans are my only viable alternative.

With “moderates” (Read: Democrats hiding in the Republican party) like those who write here it seems they are expecting another “moderate” like McCain will be nominated and thus “The One” will win again since there won’t be any real difference between the candidates other than the degree to which they are lefties.

Boy won’t it be a surpise for them if a conservative is nominated and wins. Then they will have to figure out how to spin that conservative win in such a fashion as to suggest that some how “the people” still want the lite version of Democrat progressivism that “moderate” Republicans had been peddling….
