Everyone knows women belong at home with their children — unless they look and believe like Hillary Clinton.
Duh!
eforhan on July 3, 2009 at 10:07 PM
I think that Greta is usually pretty decent. I’m not a fan of many of her views, but she seems to try to be fair and comes across as generally sincere. On this one, she was just out of bounds. I’m not sure why (and Gregg Jarrett seemed equally baffled), but she was over-reacting to a non-issue. All I can figure is that Palin’s resignation really threw Greta for a loop and she was off-balance. I’m willing to give Greta the benefit of the doubt on that.
progressoverpeace on July 3, 2009 at 10:08 PM
Greta is right. It’s much easier to pick on a woman in politics than a man. I think women in our society are still looked upon as the weaker sex, physically and intellectually.
smartsy on July 3, 2009 at 10:08 PM
Yes women react to it just like Greta reacted to it. She’s over sensitive about it, he obviously didnt mean anything derogatory. Some people do, he didnt. Greta over reacted.

Isn’t The One having his mother in law help out with the kids? Go get Michelle Greta!
I am holding my breath.
IlikedAUH2O on July 3, 2009 at 10:10 PM
I understand Greta’s point about multi-tasking but I don’t think that argument covers the the instincts to protect your children. If you subtract the remarks about Pres. Clinton’s girl problems, the worse that anyone ever said about Hillary was that she was so smart that she couldn’t be pigeon holed into the minor role of First Lady. I think it’s safe to say that the treatment of women on the Left and Right has not been comparable.
Cindy Munford on July 3, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Here’s a good question:
Who’s raising YOUR children?
I think Greta went a bit rabid for no reason. Yes, she has a lot of children and yes, she should be home for them as they are growing up in this harsh media light. There dad needs to be there too.
HornetSting on July 3, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Reminds me of a political campaign I worked on. Was the first woman candidate from the House of representatives ever in that district.
I proposed a campaign ad (only one that Nancy Pelosi is now using) about her “cleaning house”.
Some of the women I took that slogan to were very unhappy they thought I was suggesting that running a house was something similar to running for congress. Most of them saw housework as dull drudgery that was not rewarding and not something to crow about.
I was honestly shocked. Maybe because I myself saw that as a very valuable role that women play in our society. But I didnt understand the lack of “Glamour” in that role.
Women want to do glamous things with their lives. Some see having a family as more of a role than a job. And many love the role they play but they ultimately also see it as limiting.
I think I love the fact that Palin saw her role as being governor being more limiting than her role of being a mother. Because that is one big hurtle that women need to still overcome. The idea that being a mother is a limit rather than a blessing for a woman.
William Amos on July 3, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Can we stop pretending that men and women are built the same? The vast majority of men don’t mind being away from their kids for hours or even days at a time. This is how we evolved. Men went out hunting, women stayed with the young etc.

That’s right Gretta, real women abandon their kids to their careers.
Akzed on July 3, 2009 at 10:12 PM
No he didn’t. Sanford need to spend more time with his kids because he’s totally destroyed his relationship with them and time with them is the only way to rebuild it.

Go Greta!!!
Jarett was lying when he said he would have said the same thing to Sanford. BTW, why is he equating Sarah with Sanford. WTH?!
jencab on July 3, 2009 at 10:17 PM
I am a woman and I did not cringe. Sarah Palin does not shy away from the fact that she is a mother and wife. She does not care if people take note of it. She is proud of that role and of her family I am sure.
I don’t want conservative women to have to fall into this way of thinking that somehow mentioning the kids is demeaning.
It could be that the attacks on her children were among the reasons Palin resigned. I don’t know, but if it is, there is certainly nothing wrong with that.
Terrye on July 3, 2009 at 10:19 PM
It is much better to berate and put down your colleague on live TV than say something stupid like he just did…
d1carter on July 3, 2009 at 10:19 PM
I think the last thing the Sanford boys need is to be raised by a stay at home dad who is mentally unstable. Keep him employed and far away from them.
Speedwagon82 on July 3, 2009 at 10:19 PM
Yes Greta’s reaction was overly strong but I think she was trying to make the point that Greg’s speculation is exactly the sort of argument that gets many, if not most, women angry. Yes too many are oversensitive but that fact needs to be considered whenever we speak about women in politics.
TBinSTL on July 3, 2009 at 10:20 PM
AnninCA:
If the men with children had to see and hear those kids laughed at and taunted and made fun of and slandered and stalked and harassed because of his career he might well hear that kind of thing.

Yeah, Sanford multitasks really well, spending Father’s Day in Argentina with his mistress and 4 hours crying to the Associated Press about the tragedy of having found his ’soul mate’.
ProfessorMiao on July 3, 2009 at 10:21 PM
Well, of course he can’t do it very well. He’s a man. Just ask Greta.
In fact, I’ve never known a man that could multi-task. I’m just hoping that Greta will finally invent one. She’ll have to take Jarett to one of those camps where they correct you in your backwards ways.

I never figured out how Hillary and Bill did it, to be honest. Chelsea is truly a very impressive young woman with a great head on her shoulders. How they pulled that off?
I always thought it would have been nice to learn the secrets. Kennedy did well, too.

Greta is spot on. I had the same reaction when he said that. I’m glad Geta jumped on it.
It’s condecsending.
If Trig (and the rest of her children ) were an issue of time and attention, she never would have taken the VP nomination or run for Governor when she had 3.
Sarah knows who she is and what can handle. Apparently some of the rest of us are still catching on.
katy on July 3, 2009 at 10:28 PM
My oh-so-liberal son and I actually had words over this issue. He actually had the gall to say that she should stay home with the children. I bit his head off, and I really never, ever do that these days. He’s a grown-up. Nobody wants a mom who can still make you feel 2 inches tall when you’re a grown man. *haha

Oh well, bluelight….won’t agree with you ever on that one. She is very, very grounded, in my opinion. And she adores her mom.
I find that absolutely touching and authentic. Hillary must have done a lot right to engender that in her daughter.
AnninCA on July 3, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Oh, I like the Bush girls. I agree. They turned out great. So did Reagan’s kids, eventually. Took a long time for them. (But that could have been due to other stuff going on with them.)
AnninCA on July 3, 2009 at 10:31 PM
I think that we should take Palin’s word for it. S
he resigned So Alaskans wouldn’t have to read and hear every day what their Governor was being accused of on that particular day/week.
It also allows her to speak out without negative consequences to the citizens of Alaska.

Greta’s right. There’s an absolute double standard.

I have to agree with Greta Van Susteran. Too often Palin is dismissed, even if indirectly like Gregg Gerard does here.
I think Dr. Zero’s post says is best about blue blood beltway types, but that also influences the news core to follow along with the perception of intelligence.
If that were true, Obama would have never been elected.

Well, what I have concluded, after reading all the replies and reactions?
Why the heck not resign. She couldn’t do much worse. Perhaps sitting there and providing a target, not only for the liberal press but even for the GOP insiders, simply didn’t make sense.
Can’t say that I could disagree with that logic.
And perhaps she also knows the limited resources of Alaska to really bat away this stuff.
That makes sense.
So maybe resignation was actually the smart path out.
AnninCA on July 3, 2009 at 10:50 PM
In this day and age, who doesn’t multitask? Male or female? It was obvious in that clip that Greta has an image in her head of “that man”, and she was going to slap that image on Gregg, whether it applied or not. Of course Palin can handle the pressures of politics and raise her children, it’d be stupid to suggest otherwise. But for Gregg to offer an air of understanding in regard to family issues, as he did with Sanford, only to be met with a condescending proclamation of “you don’t get it” just reeks of the same crap that makes Sotomayor an illegitimate SC nominee. Yes Gregg can “get it” and his gender doesn’t preclude him from “getting it”.

If the Ethics charges were still coming fast and furious, I suspect Palin saw no way out but to resign so she could go national.
And let’s be honest, can we guys? The AssClown RNC wasn’t doing ANYTHING to protect her, an up and coming prospect, by sending any legal help to quash this BS. She had to look after herself, first. The Beltway Kleagles only look out for people inside the Beltway, which is why they are despised.
On it’s face it looks bad, to people like Ed and Allah, but in the long run, it allows her to go and help Congressionals and Senatorials. That will pay huge dividends.
Besides, who do you really want to listen to? Palin or Mittens?
Jesus, the question answers itself.
