Krauthammer on Palin: She’s young, she’ll be back

I agree, as does Geraghty, as does Omri Ceren. Like I said in the video thread earlier, she’s in Nixon position here. She’s finished in the near term, i.e. 2012, but the public’s memory is short. If she hits the trail for some GOP movers and shakers and reemerges in three years or so with an ability to talk shop on domestic and foreign policy, Republicans won’t care that she flaked out on the governorship. The One only had two years of big-league political experience under his belt when he ran for president, after all; it didn’t hurt him because he convinced voters he knew what he was talking about notwithstanding his greenness. That’s the place she needs to get to, assuming she still has national ambitions.
Of course, if Juan is right and this was all motivated by some looming mega-scandal, disregard everything I just said.

Juan has been drinking stupid since November 4, 2008. I don’t even listen to his analysis anymore because it is delivered in an enema.
As far as Krauthammer, I love the hammer, I disagree with him on Palin. He should have given her a chance and he got what he wanted.

Don’t worry about the past; let’s focus on the present! I mean come on…the public’s memory? How about the public’s consciousness? Considering the unheeded skeletons dancing out of the closet during our last election, how many people do you think will even notice this?

I absolutely don’t agree that she’s finished for the near term. I think this move has both freed her from the burdens of being the Governor of Alaska and will allow her to become an even more formidable foe in the 2012. Think about it, now she can go to fundraisers or give speeches anywhere in the world without it resulting in an ethics charge. She can “bone up” on the issues at her pace. She could much more time in the media centers of NY and DC, raising her visibility. Heck, she could move to Iowa if she wanted to.

Yes, but The One wasn’t a quitter and didn’t deliver a long, rambling speech about the great sacrifices of our predecessors before throwing in the towel. (At least I don’t recall that Seward quit when broadly criticized over his plan to buy Alaska.)
Here’s the way I look at it- the world needs losers. If not for losers, you can’t have winners. Someone more stable and solid in the GOP will rise to take her place and fill her vapid shoes.

OK, but what does she do in the meantime?
Look at previous presidents- how many have been elected after not having held elected office for over 7 years? And that consisting of a partial term as governor?
I think she has a role as pundit or activist, but as candidate for President? I’m not sure exactly what she could do between now and 2016 to make that a reality.

I don’t know what she intends to do, but I do think Alaska is so far away that it’s like living in a different country. I’ve wondered how she could begin a march to the WH if her family and job require her presence so far away. Moving her family to the lower 48 will probably be in her future, imho.

The Hammer is a wise man. Palin is young enough to have a bright future but not as a presidential candidate in 2012.

Amen Buckeye. If anyone here thinks that she is some sort of quitter, then they are mistaking. This woman will be taking on a job bigger than being POTUS. She is going to take him to task on everything and then bring his head in on a stick. That is her role. The country is not lost without her as a presidential candidate. The country is better off to have her as a fighter. Let her do now what she is best at, calling it as she sees it. The country needs that right now.

How about we leave Sarah’s future to the voters and not the pundits ?
William Amos on July 3, 2009 at 8:29 PM
I disagreed with Krauthammer’s point on saying her resignation is a black mark on her resume. She’s leaving Alaska in good shape unlike the majority of other states in the lower 48. Whatever Sarah Palin does is never going to be good enough for some people. At least she’s going to do things on her terms.
For me its either Palin, Jindal, or Barber for President in 2012. The rest (cough: Romney, Huckabee,Pawlenty) can forget about getting my vote.
RedRobin145 on July 3, 2009 at 8:29 PM
I’ve heard some shocking rumors;
1) You’ve heard that she is too Christian to be in politics, right? While I hear her minister, and spirtual mentor, is a raving anti-semite…
2) You’ve heard she might have ties to the Alaskan Independence Party, right? Well it turns out the man that launched her political career is far worse then that, and in fact only escaped a long prison sentence for terrorism thanks to the bankroll and influence of his filthy rich capitalist father…
3) And speaking of a dumb, there is a tape about to surface of her talking with out her handlers where she doesn’t know how many states there are, thinks Austrian is a language, and makes fun of special Olympians.
Surely no politican could recover from these sort of gaffes, right?

No. I think she is smart enough to see long term. She and Todd will protect their kids in the short hall but she wants them to grow up in a free country.

It is not just us dumb Blacks who voted for Obama. Obama also got 77% of the Jewish vote. Does this indicate Jews don’t do their homework either? Obama won states that barely have any Blacks. He won in fact 53% of the popular vote; Blacks are maybe 12% of the population. Don’t single out Blacks as being solely responsible for the Obama presidency.
DarkKnight3565 on July 3, 2009 at 8:33 PM
You know we just elected a State Senator president, right? And not a particularly committed one.
But…as Republicans tend to be more serious about such things, your point is probably very accurate in regards to the primaries…
18-1 on July 3, 2009 at 8:34 PM
Here is what the decision came down to:
1)Sarah Palin no longer wanted to be a punching bag or sitting target courtesy of the Obama war room and the MSM incurring hundreds of thousand dollars of debt fighting ethics complaints (call it self-preservation and not believing in masochism)
2)To prepare for a Presidential run Sarah needed to level the playing field against Romney and Huckabee who have their ships in the water ready to weigh anchor
3)Sarah needsed the ability to attack or take the fight to Obama on a 24/7 basis while at the same time boning up, dping her homework, building her Presidential team and organization and writing her book and basically getting her ducks in a row by next summer
4)As Mark Levin indicated it is important ASAP for Sarah to hit the lower 48 to rebrand her image and not let her opponents define her. By the way it is also a lot harder to hit a moving target.
technopeasant on July 3, 2009 at 8:34 PM
I knew Allah was going to get grief for that sentence. But it’s accurate. I love Palin, but she’s quitting in the middle of her first term. How can that do anything but hurt her politically?
I wish her luck and success in whatever Palin does. I also wish she hadn’t done this. Anything else would have been better. She could have gone into lockdown mode in Alaska. Refusing to talk about anything other than Alaskan issues, studied national issues, served out her term and not seek re-election and made a serious move for 2012. But she didn’t. And I’m bummed out about it.

Let’s say there is no smoking gun behind this, because, if there is, that changes things. Where has been the Republican support for her during all the viscous, deceitful attacks during the last ten months? They voted “Present,” just like the ONE does, and really let her down, so I really don’t blame her for telling them, “Up yours;” the moles that worked for McCain were the worst. Because of the way the Repubs treated her, they don’t deserve good leadership; they eat their own, and that is why I switched parties to an Independent a few years ago. May God help us, because we have screwed it up pretty well on our own.

The barometer for her effectiveness from this point forward is simple: If she continues to be attacked, then she is being effective. If she drops off the radar for the long term then she’s chosen private life.
An important point to grasp is that if she does see national politics in her future she isn’t leaving office to make the attacks go away. She’s just removing the leg irons.

How/when/why did Americans ever come to believe that journalists and pundits and the “news” they create is unbiased. It’s such a deadly assumption, and almost always wrong, and gives undeserved influence to people who are clearly intelligent, but not more. Somebody needs to slap Americans across the face and tell them to wake up about the media–all of it! They’re only dangerous and the enemy if they enjoy the illusion of impartiality. It’s got to be ripped away in the common perception.

It would seem to me that whatever you think of Palin and wherever you lie along the moderate to conservative continuum, the time has come to kick people like Schmidt out of the party.
With the media and the Democrats already working 24-7 to take Republicans/conservatives down, we don’t need people on the inside helping them.
18-1 on July 3, 2009 at 8:46 PM
My thoughts:
1. Charles K, while most times brilliantly insightful, has never been a Palin fan. I see this statement of his coming from relief that he believes he won’t have to full-court bash a conservative in 2012. (i.e. Palin) Kind of like a K-Hammer pat on the head and an indulgent “ok, sweetie, now run along and play” for lil’ Sarah.
2. Her reasons for resigning, although disappointing, were understandable. The Celtic Diva type nutjobs in AK were not going to let up on the ethics charges. That would continue to run up the price tag for AK tax payers and for the Palin family. Not to mention the thousands of man-hours it would eat up in dealing with them. Having Sean Parnell take over so he can advance their administration’s agenda was a wise move for their ultimate goals.
3. I watched her statement/speech again just a few minutes ago – she is (as the Anchoress noted) looking very thin lately. Perhaps the attacks against her children have truly taken a toll on her personally, and she truly needs to find some refuge from it. Especially since she has found no help, no assistance, from the RNC or from other republicans. McCain’s campaign staff have shown themselves this week as the bottom feeding, back stabbing, low life scum sucking dogs they are. Megan McCain – you too.
4. Why would AP, a few weeks ago, ridicule via Twitter his own HA readers and commenters who support Sarah Palin? I’ve wondered this, but haven’t asked.
5. Let’s see how this plays out – if a scandal does come out, and it’s confirmed, then indeed her national career will be in jeopardy. But if there is an event in which Sarah Palin is the main draw and it draws crowds in the thousands….This will be telling.

And leave it to Sarah and her family.
I’m not sure what’s happening with Sarah Palin right now. I admit, it doesn’t look too good for her to resign if she has national political aspirations, but, by the same token, as pointed out, she’s spending so much time having to defend herself that she doesn’t really have time to govern effectively, so by resigning, she removes having to worry about ankle-biting ethics complaints dogging her as she works the lower 48. Also, it clears the decks for her to speak out loudly on both Cap and Tax and Obamacare at a crucial time–another plus.
On the other hand, she might well be sick and tired, not so much of the attacks on her, but rather the attacks on her children, which have been relentless and incredibly brutal. I’ll be honest, I couldn’t take 10% of what’s been thrown at her without going into a violent rampage. Added to that, she’s been betrayed by those within her own party, and John McCain has played the part of the Dauphin turning his back on Sarah’s Jeanne d’Arc with his anemic responses to the attacks against her by his former staff and others–I can’t help but think that she sees that as a shocking betrayal by someone she probably genuinely admired and looked up to. Letterman…the never-ending ankle-biting ethics complaints…the relentless smears and mud-slinging coming not just from the Democratic manipulated and controlled media, but also from her own party…the cruel attacks on her infant son as well as teenage daughters–is it any wonder that she might want to just give up the entire process as being hopelessly broken and retire to a quiet life as business owner, wife, mother, and member of the community? I know I wouldn’t hold it against her if she decided to do that, but I would mourn the loss of a valuable asset for this country should that be her choice.
What happened Sarah Palin should never have been allowed to happen. It’s a reflection of how diseased and sick our politics and culture have become. Not even Hercules could clean this Augean Stable.
