Is Palin’s national political career over?
posted at 5:45 pm on July 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The news of Sarah Palin’s resignation as governor came during my show this afternoon, where we spent most of an hour discussing it with the chatizens and my co-host Duane Patterson. I’ve had a chance to watch the video of her announcement and read through dozens of Twitter messages back and forth attempting to rationalize this, and still, it simply can’t be rationalized on the basis of what Palin said today. It’s easily the most bizarre resignation I’ve seen, and just about senseless.
The lame-duck explanation was the most incoherent part of the entire statement:
“Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional ‘Lame Duck’ status in this particular climate would just be another dose of ‘politics as usual,’ something I campaigned against and will always oppose. It is my duty to always protect our great state. With that in mind, my family and I determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things, so that this administration, with its positive agenda, its accomplishments and its successful road to an incredible future, can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success.”
Bear in mind that the election isn’t next month but about 16 months from now, in November 2010. Using this logic, Palin should never have run for the first term unless she was willing to run for the second, and not run for either if she wasn’t willing (or legally able) to run for a third. Politicians don’t enter lame-duck status until their successor has already been elected and they’re running out the rest of the term. And all politicians become lame ducks at some point — and none of them quit just to avoid it.
Also, how can Palin quit because she didn’t want to deal with being a lame duck and claim in the same breath that her administration would “continue without interruption”? She just interrupted it! If she thinks that being a “lame duck” would hamper her ability to push her agenda in the state’s capital, how does she think that an unelected Sean Parnell is going to get it done?
If it’s her duty to always “protect” Alaska, then that strongly implies not walking away from the responsibility of governing it — a responsibility she sought, and with which her constituents trusted her to execute. No one leads by quitting. No one leads by quitting. Palin’s abandoning her post, and at least from her own description, doing it because she doesn’t want to deal with the issues of being a “lame duck,” a status all politicians have to handle at some point.
I’ve seen a myriad of excuses on Twitter and e-mail for this bizarre resignation: her legal bills are too high, she’s putting her family first, she doesn’t want to distract Alaskans because of cheap-shot ethics complaints that are distracting everyone. None of those make any sense. If the spotlight was too much, then she shouldn’t have run for office in the first place. If she’s quitting because people are taking potshots at her, then she’s not the kind of political fighter we thought she was. The legal bills might be a rational reason, but thoroughly insufficient for betraying the people who put her in charge of Alaska — and her memoirs would have paid for her legal bills many times over, had she completed her term.
There’s really no excuse, and what Rich Lowry also calls her “terrible,” “rambling,” and “not at all persuasive” statement showed that. Unless there was a serious illness or a serious scandal, the resignation on the grounds Palin gave is simply incomprehensible. She has destroyed her own credibiity in a single day.
I liked Sarah Palin and supported her inclusion on the GOP ticket last fall. I thought she had more toughness than this. It’s a big disappointment, and it’s the end of any hope of Palin getting taken seriously as a politician on the national level in the future.
Update (AP): I was going to tuck this into one of my own posts but it fits better here. Quin Hillyer, senior editor at the Spectator, calls the resignation an “appalling dereliction of duty.”
What Sarah Palin did today was get out before the real challenges of the job (whatever challenges there are for such an easy job) really rear their heads. The going got tough in terms of spurious ethics charges against her, and she took off. That’s cowardly. That’s not sign of staying power. It’s a sign of wanting to get out while the getting is good, in order to become a full-time candidate for a presidential race that won’t culminate for 3 1/2 more years. It’s a little too calculating, by half — or more.
I just listened to her speech announcing her decision, and found it singularly unimpressive. “This was a rambling, bombastic, self-centered, ‘poor me’ kind of speech.” That’s how Mike Carey of the Anchorage Daily News just described her speech on Fox News. I agree. He then said it was, darn, I already can’t remember if he said it was “pitiful” or “pathetic,” but it was some word like that. Again, I agree. It was a speech in which she clearly made a bit for a national audience — not a very effective bid, but a transparent one — but didn’t adequately explain to the people of Alaska why she was relinquishing her duty…
Statesmen hang tough. Sarah Palin is cutting and running. ‘Nuff said.

The way the country is going right now, the 2010 mid-term elections are impossible to predict. Impossible.
Knowing that, anybody saying this or that candidate is done for, or is a lock for the POTUS nomination in 2012 is talking through their hat. 3 1/2 years is a lifetime in contemporary American politics — anything can happen between now and then.
Sure, it’s possible that Palin may disappear from the public memory in the next couple of years, but I wouldn’t bet money on it. Saying she can never be elected to a national office is based on the emotion of this moment, not objective reality. I guarantee there will be lots of moments and lots of other emotions between now and 2012, and none of us can predict what they will be.

Ed, I know it’s hard to believe that a politician would do something that is in the best interests of their constituents and family with the examples we have today.
But why can’t you accept her main reason as the truth? You just dismiss it out of hand. Is it not possible that she did resign to save the taxpayers millions of dollars over the next few years defending her from all the nuts out there filing frivolous ethics charges to try to derail her.
I am disappointed sir. I expect that kind of cynicism from AP, but not you.

I guess that wasn’t clear enough of a broadside at the junta in Washington for Ed. He still doesn’t understand what she intends.
Meanwhile … Biden is in Iraq telling insurgents that if they push a little harder they can destroy Iraq and have it for their own – that the US won’t do anything.

It is obvious Gov Palin is aware of the many rammifications that go with her sudden resignation. I think it is rather pretentious at this point to say what her future is, politically or otherwise. At this point, all anybody can really do is be undecided until more information becomes available. Rightly or not, people are making judgments way too early.
Another thing we can say for certain is she was at least nice enough to give us a break from the MJ coverage.

Could it be she decided to leave the GOP due to their total lack of support as her family was attacked?
If so, Sarah, welcome to the independent dark side… we have cookies and Tea Parties.
Romeo13 on July 3, 2009 at 6:15 PM
Those who are comparing what Sarah just did with how all other politicians have done things in the past are missing the point. AK has spent $2 mil dealing with 15 ethics complaints just in the last 10 months. Given the moral poverty of those who have been filing these idiotic things, this would just have been the beginning.
Another 16 months would have given them time to file twice that amount and would have cost AK taxpayers millions more to deal with them. Not to mention the gridlock in which state government would have been mired.
Plus, the Palins do not have that kind of money. It’s cost them over $500k in legal fees just since January.
Oh, and Ed? FYI – The ADN is so completely and utterly anti-Palin it is laughable to even have one of their quotes up.
Kinda like how foolish it would be to have a MSNBC quote up about Sarah Palin. Oh wait…..

The same people that have made Gov. Palin’s life miserable have been going after Congresswoman Bachman. It will now move into a full time effort. And the same cast of characters on both sides of the fence will do the same thing that has been done to Gov. Palin. The best that can be hoped for is that people will recognize a trend in the attacks.

You’re wrong, Ed.
Think about it. It’s really impossible for you or AP or any of the others to understand what Palin has endured. I listened to your show today, and you sounded like some sort of outraged middle management type of HR flack.
What Palin has done is smart strategy for her family in the interim and for herself politically in the future.
She is the most appealing, magnetic voice for conservatives in the country. She’s the IT girl. She’s got what it takes, but as long as Republicans and Dems malign her she cannot govern, and her voice is lost.
Rather than accepting political castration by her own party, your cohorts and the libs, she can step back and work on her own.
I don’t know what her plans are, but I sincerely hope that she will be on a nationwide speaking tour educating people about conservative values and making plenty of money as well. The country needs people like Palin.
Get over your snottiness and see the possibilities.
Cody1991 on July 3, 2009 at 6:17 PM
With today’s announcement, the only way that happens is if you’re both on the same guided tour.
I liked Palin. A lot. Sure, she needed a little refinement, but she was an engaging figure with a lot of potential.
That’s gone now. Whatever her reasons for resigning are, her career as an elected official is over. Voters aren’t going to trust her with the most powerful position on Earth if she’s going to fold under the strain of frivolous ethics complaints.
I’m sure she’ll remain a public figure, but sure as hell not as President.

All I HEARD from the last weeks from both consevative & liberal pundits was that she needed to go away and study the issues like econmomic and foreign policy, isn’t this a way to do this with out being in the spotlight. before she was a VP the media made her an expert on energy policy. i guess that change when she became VP. Newt Ginrinch pointed out that she had more qualifications than Obama. BOth the liberal and the socalledconservative media(kathleen parker, david brooks) accomplihsed what they wanted, destroyed a promising political career. u bloggers on this site should be ashamed of yourselfs. there is no way she can get a break in the media. what ever she doesi can’t believe how one interview destroyed her careers. all these people in the media point to that interview and said she can’t grasp the issues. what issues. couric set up palin like she did ross perot in 92. does any one get it. i thought she did job in the debate w/ biden but the only place that said she one was fox.even steve schmidt, mccaind campaign manerger wanted to destroy her, for whaT. what i am really afraid of in the future is that this will turn more decent people off in running for political office.

Shorter Palinics:
Look, I am/was a supporter of her, but this spin pushes the boundaries of rationality. And woe beside anyone that dares to point this out to the faithful.

Obama is dismantling and destroying our country & our way of life with every passing minute, but all that matters is Sarah Palin’s possible “hidden agenda” for quitting her post.
Pretty sad day…..everyone is so judgmental and hate filled. I thought we as a nation were an empathetic & compassionate people? None of us know this woman’s life or struggles; maybe she really could not handle the hate; who could? She probably got death threats against her baby; God knows the hard core liberals detest that precious child. Hindsight is 20/20 and I feel sad for anyone whose family is so viscerally hated and attacked.
