Close friend of Palin’s: She’ll seriously consider running for president

posted at 7:05 pm on July 3, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

No way to tell if this is a real window onto her mind or just spin to salve the wound of a tough day, but the Palinistas deserve some hope.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin plans to remain extremely visible and will give serious consideration to running for president in 2012, but has made no decision, a close friend said after her startling announcement Friday that she will resign her office…

Those friends say she plans to give a series of paid speeches, and will also make free GOP appearances, raising money for the party and for issues. She also plans to help other candidates, collecting political IOUs for herself…

Friends said Palin brushes off hostile news coverage but feels that the ethics complaints in Alaska – accompanied by attacks in the legislature, and the relentless pounding she was taking at home – were taking a toll on her family and her state. So she believes the decision was selfless, the friends said.

But:

“She has never been able to deliver a succinct message and this one was all over the place when this really needed to be one of her best performances,” a Republican congressional official said.

“While it is absolutely true that people in Alaska were trying to tear her down with false charges, it doesn’t look good that when she was faced with adversity and attacks on her character that she threw in the towel. … She needed to go away for a while and bone up on issues. Truly bewildering.”

At the Corner, Mark Levin puts on a brave face and declares that she’s running and that’s that. On the flip side, here’s Ed Rollins — who was Huckabee’s campaign manager, remember — making a persuasive case for why this seems like a very, very strange way to launch a presidential bid. Not only did she make the announcement at a time traditionally reserved to bury horrible news but he’s right about her speech seeming hastily pulled together, replete with the bizarre lame-duck rationale, instead of polished at leisure the way one would expect you’d do for an announcement this big. Consensus on the right seems to be gathering behind the idea that she did this for the kids, to protect them and to spend more time with them, but if that’s true, why not make that the focus of the speech and give this presser on Monday morning, when the media’s rested and ready for a full week of new coverage? Quitting for her family only makes her sympathetic. If that’s the real reason, why obscure it?

Levin just mentioned Dr. Zero’s post about Palin.

Dr. Zero is spot on. Millions of people in this country are screaming to have someone with some common sense and discipline step up. At this point I can only imagine that there are plenty of liberal wannabees who would be glad to step down with their pensions. They are clearly out of their league.

And speaking of ‘leagues’, the best thing we can do as conservatives is to label the O’Bummers as “Bush League Neophytes”.

Make it a mantra, ‘Bush League! Bush League! Bush League!’

Forever. Non stop. Never ending.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if there was an internet blogger who gladly, and consistently, posted Palin smears, knowing that they would generate huge numbers, then criticized her for stepping down as a result of the smears?

Im going to reserve judgment on her being a quitter until I see what she does. If she continues to fight…then she didn’t quit, she passed the governor ball so that she can help the team win the game.

She didn’t just pass the ball- she walked off the court after getting fouled and decided to join the cheerleading squad instead.

Palin Will Run In ‘12 On More Retardation Platform

SnarkVader on July 3, 2009 at 7:38 PM

I honestly don’t mind losing an argument (or elections) based on honest disagreement on policy, but what’s going on with the left (and some on the right) is almost subhuman in nature. It’s like the displays of baroque, freakish, hate-fueled violence that took place between Serbs, Croats and Bosnians during that civil war.

No actual violence is taking place here yet but what is this kind of hatred paving the way for? If this is how Palin is treated, what do we have to retaliate with to get through to the Obama fans? Big social changes always seem impossible – until they happen.

Django on July 3, 2009 at 7:46 PM

Palin is the GOP secret weapon for 2010 and 2012.

She will be in every purple district working to get a Republican elected, and she’ll be in every state where she’ll help in a Senate race. Nobody draws like she can.

She’ll start naming names from the campaign, and then we’ll get the purge of some in the GOP political class that many would love to see.

She ain’t running for president in 2012. She’s going to spend the next several years helping others out. Did you listen to the point-guard section of her speech? She’ll spend the next several years dishing off to others as only she can.

Think about it. For the 2010 House and Senate races, who’s a bigger help to GOP candidates? Romney, Huckabee, Rudy, [name your person], or Palin?

Given the media onslaught, sitting up in Alaska as a governor does her no good. She’s not a lame duck, she’s a sitting duck.

The politicians and strategists think it a terrible move. Therefore, I think it’s the right move.

BuckeyeSam on July 3, 2009 at 7:46 PM

What the pundits who criticize Palin’s decision fail to appreciate is that the only publicity she gets as governor of Alaska is the negative coverage bestowed upon her by the national media. Freed from the responsibilities of office, Palin can devote herself to the needs and interests of the country and make news, not simply respond to attacks.

Today’s big news is that Barack Obama will oppose harsher sanctions for Iran because he believes it would be counter productive. This news generated all of 67 comments at Hot Air. Did it even make the MSM news?

The decision not to impose stiffer sanctions on Iran is insane. It is now certain that Iran will have nuclear weapons unless Israel attacks. I doubt very much that Sarah Palin would be giving it a pass if she were not preoccupied with other duties. America badly in need of a clear thinking charismatic conservative with the balls to speak out against the idiocies of Barck Obama.

America’s future is brighter today than it was yesterday. The gross incompetence of the Obama administration might yet be challenged by a prominent politician other than Dick Cheney. Karl Rove has performed yeoman service in the past six months detailing the idiotic essence of the decisions taken by the Obama administration but a charismatic voice is needed in order to reach the critical mass of the public necessary to turf this idiot out of office.

Basilsbest on July 3, 2009 at 7:46 PM

If continuing to be Alaska’s Governor means she spends more time defending herself in court than the people who voted for her, then she made the right call. She can’t just tell these idiots to stop filing frivolous ethics charges for the next 16 months, and she isn’t a dictator willing to change the law to suit her personal needs. I agree with stepping down on this point alone, and it shows a sincerity that has today illustrated, based on the reactions from both sides (looking at Ed and AP here as well), how little principle is left in politics today.

Think about it.

We’re hearing grand theories of avalanche-sized scandals, phantom pregnancies, and even painting the ‘Cuda’ as a coward. These would all be fine if Sarah is pulling a fast one, like say all of the politicians we’ve come to know and hate over the years. But what if Sarah is the principled gal we all “knew” her to be 24 hours ago? What if she doesn’t want to continue half-assing her job because of the democrats and republicans sniping and dragging her through the courts time after time?

Principles. Refreshing. But by the looks of it, no one dares believe a politician has them anymore. Its all subtext and playing from the shadows, back room deals and smoke filled rooms, innuendos and slight of hand, but couldn’t ever be what she claimed… a principled stand for the people of the great state of Alaska.

Based on what I seen, read and heard about Sarah Palin since she stepped off that plane to join McCain’s campaign last year I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Ed Rollins supports Palin’s scumbag opposition Huckahu Akbar. Who by the way made some extremely questionable statements today regarding Palin.

Ed is upset because the GOP numbers on support for Palin is at 75%.

That said, I am still not a donating Palin supporter. I am not for anyone other than the defeat of Death Star Care, Amnesty, Card Check, and Crap and Tax. Plus the whole taking back the House deal in 2010.

freeus on July 3, 2009 at 7:52 PM

The political wizards will be busy pointing out all the reasons that she is done as a viable candidate, and why this was a clumsy, self-defeating way to make such an announcement, and why she was never going anywhere in national politics anyway, and why she just isn’t ready for the national stage.

But this line: “She also plans to help other candidates, collecting political IOUs for herself…” is probably closest to the reason she wants out of the Governor’s Mansion.

She energizes people — no matter what the Party power brokers say in public — that is undeniable. Candidates will scramble for her support, and alliances will be forged. Maybe not in time for 2012, but she is far from done.

Thunderstorm129 on July 3, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Her speech wasn’t rambling. My take:

She led off by reminding us of Alaska’s value to the country as a resource rich state.

She followed by emphasizing her administration’s accomplishments in being good stewards of those resources.

She concluded by stating that the best way to continue said stewardship, in light of her situation, was to pass the torch to her Lt. Gov.

Alaska best interests were present in each part of the speech.

If I understood her, why can’t others?

pugwriter on July 3, 2009 at 7:53 PM

We’re always complaining, on a daily basis, that there’s no one stating the conservative response, to Crap-by-Barack and Colin Powell. She can now call them out, verbalize what we hear fron Rush and Levin and Cheney and get the press to cover it.

Palin could set up a Think Tank and be the Motivator In Chief for winning seats in Congress to stop Obama-nomics for 2010.

And, having secured some Lower 48 savvy, Palin could then run against the inevitable horrible presidency of Barry The Childish, which should be snarling on a mass of undeniable (even by the All-Denial Media) failures and feckless follies by 2012.

I can’t say one way or another about POTUS. But I do know that, as Cheney did to Obama on national security, there’s likely only one person to step up and torpedo Obama on some domestic items–in the next few months. Who, more than any other GOP, is noted for energy expertise? Palin said something about continuing to help Alaskans. What better way to do it than to help sink Cap-and-Tax and to turn Americans back to domestic oil and natural gas supplies. I don’t know about anyone else, but gas is creeping back up and the economy is heading south. Obama’s mythical, fricking green jobs will never materialize.

Many Americans need a straight-shooter to lay it out for them right now on energy and on healthcare. Palin is it. She’s Don Knotts’s character in The Incredible Mr. Limpet.

I weep for America.
The GOP would have nothing to worry about if it stood for American principles. People from all over this world have been drawn to America because of our liberty and freedom. People from every nation, color and religion. Our country did not try to copy Europe. Our Founders didn’t say,, “Hey, maybe if we acted more like France we’d get more immigrants.”
No,, we just created a nation where people were free. Where the rule of law prevailed and the government was subject to the people. Once that was established,,, people flocked here from all over the world.
If the GOP returned and stood for American principles,,, and shouted those principles from the rooftops like they meant it (small government, low taxes, freedom and liberty and the rule of law!) the people would flock to it’s door just as they have to America!
This is not hard to understand!!
People have a natural yearning for freedom!! People do not have a natural yearning for health care! People do not have a natural yearning for welfare!!
People will risk their lives for freedom,, they will leave families, friends and homes to escape to a land where they think they will be free!!
The desire for liberty is always there. It is always present. For most people,,, it will always trump slavery and the need for safety. It just needs passionate and articulate spokesmen.
Does the GOP want a big tent??? Stand for liberty and the rule of law in every aspect of public and political life and there will be so many people flocking the tent will will not be able to contain them! Especially in a time such as today.
The wells of freedom are few,,, and we know,,, a great many of the people are thirsty!!! More than we or even they realize!!!

Coronagold on July 3, 2009 at 8:23 PM

Her analogy of basketball is key to understanding her thinking. She is passing the ball, so that the focus will be off of her and she will be free to move into a better position to help the team win the game…instead of being a ball hog. Mitt did the same thing when he stopped his campaign.

Conservative Voice on July 3, 2009 at 8:24 PM

I’m just really upset about this. I was really, really upset about Sanford…not so much about Ensign because…Ensign who? Seriously, though, I was of the mind that she needed to work out this term and just study hard…try to travel…get involved in national events. I realize it would be difficult to launch a national campaign from Alaska (brother in law lives there…yeah…it’s wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy over there.) But, a few things really are troubling:

1. News dump day. WTH?
2. Unless she was dumping over the weekend to keep the fire on Obama the next week…? Because, otherwise,
3. This sucks because we have MAJOR things happening with Obamacare, illegal firing of IG’s, cap and trade, etc. and with the other couple GOP guys getting ruined, this isn’t good for our image at all, or
4. Her image, which is already that of a novice, correct or incorrect. Spend any amount of time with liberals or on the street, most have a negative view of Palin. It WAS turning…the press was overreaching and the constant slams were turning in her favor, possibly. However,
5. I am concerned that there are well funded people who are digging out all the dirt (like in 2004 and 08) to label us the corrupt ones. Granted, most those who were “caught” we truly corrupt, but, I think there is an orchestrated witch hunt going on. I fear what we might be hearing in the future weeks.

It’s kind of hard to be optimistic given the colossal heartbreak we felt with Sanford…that was pretty big. What a waste…I am hoping to be wrong. Praying to be wrong.

I am, however, kind of pissed at the treatment those of us are getting when we criticize something (however small) Palin has done as if she were infallible and we were anathema. She is a human. She is going to fail us…and if we aren’t willing to critique her at all, then we are not allowing her a place on the stage in the first place. Not to mention we are doing the very thing we hate about Obama cultists.

SARAH AND MITT in 2012?

bloggless on July 3, 2009 at 8:25 PM

This is, hands down, one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen on a mainstream political blog. Shame on HuffPo and shame on Arianna.

SARAH AND MITT in 2012?

bloggless on July 3, 2009 at 8:25 PM

As a Mitt supporter I’m hoping he chooses to be a puppet master next time around. I, like Sarah, don’t much like the heat of the kitchen all that much. (I’m a Mormon). I like his ideas and experience and everything but I’d just as soon my religion be let alone.

Also Mitt became such a lightening rod for hate, same as Sarah. I don’t know why anyone wants to be the candidate.

Conservative Voice on July 3, 2009 at 8:37 PM

A couple things come to mind regarding the announcement today.

1. Considering who was elected President last November, I don’t see why Palin’s chances are dead. Its a long time to 2012.

2. Saying she did it for the kids may gain sympathy, but I’m also thinking it could used against her as a woman.

All the rest of the chumps can bloviate and hypothesize all they want. You will -still- look like the fools we already knew you were.

Her convoy is hitting the road. What better way to create and then fine tune a message for 2012 than to campaign for people in 2010 non-stop.

Occam’s Razor also comes into play here too. You dolts are trying to read tea leaves into her reasoning and her future when it is quite plain what she is going to do…in fact she SAID exactly what she is going to do.

See quote.
Read it again.

Your flair for motivation is moving.

No one but you can speculate or share their thoughts or ideas?

She quit in the middle of her first term. Whatever the reason is, it’s not going to wash with a majority of voters. Most American’s don’t live under the white hot spot light Palin does (and I have empathy for her in that regard), but they all do have problems. But they plod on.

I wish she did anything but this. She was sure to get my vote in 2012 primaries unless something catostrophic happened.

It just did.

I still love her as a politician. I still think she’s great. I think she’s quitting the highest elected office she will ever see as of today. I hope I’m wrong.

Japan/Hong Kong in August on business. Perhaps Shanghai in Oct-Nov. for fun and just to see what its like.

This could be part of a plan to run for the White House but it makes about as much sense as Ross Perot’s 1992 campaign–Ed Rollins is familiar with that run.

I don’t think the comparison is fair. Perot had the personality and charisma of a bean-counter. And I was a big fan of Perot.

genso on July 3, 2009 at 9:12 PM

My2 cents…

She is pregnant and does not want the scruntiny from the press and the nut jobs.
She will make money to pay off the legal bills.
If she stays in office she will continue to be harassed with lawsuites.
By resigning she can stop the media spotlight and recoup.
Then will see what happens in 12 – 16 months.

2. Saying she did it for the kids may gain sympathy, but I’m also thinking it could used against her as a woman.

Scopper on July 3, 2009 at 8:39 PM

I don’t know, I think it’s the opposite, actually. Women get a pass in the workplace when it comes to family obligations where men really don’t. Women come and go in the corporate world all the time; women are far more likely than men to take FMLA leave and to leave at 5 on the dot b/c they have kids to attend to while men will work overtime. That’s a generalization of course, but I think it’s a fair one for the most part. This has been part of the public discourse for a long time, the fact that women will get off the fast track temporarily b/c they want to be with their kids. And when they want to go back to work, telling an interviewer that they took time off for personal reasons is a perfectly acceptable answer to why there’s a gap in a woman’s job history. A man couldn’t get away with that so easily.

Blanche Lincoln is our junior senator here in Arkansas. She WAS in the House before she was elected to the Senate. But she quit her House seat pretty early in her term b/c she was the new mother of twins and I guess she just felt like she needed to take time to be with them. Arkansans didn’t hold that against her when she decided to run for Senate a few years later.

Bottom line: If Sarah stepped down in order to focus more on being a wife and mother, I don’t think that will be a liability. Quite the contrary in fact.

However, I don’t think that’s the reason she stepped down — at least not the main one.

I think we’ll see her this summer speaking out against cap-n-trade and Obamacare.

If Palin is out for good, there’s going to be some very upset angry people. Not at her, at the SCUM that were attacking her kids. In addition, a lot of people are just plain fed up with this Obama crap. It’s looking more like just before one of those Ca. forest fires, and Obama just lit a cigarette.

The economy, growing anger at the media and government in general, and Palin’s plain talk and personality pluses create an entirely different dynamic. I think this is less of a Hail-Mary than Perot’s run.

Resigning, is the big, bold move, Miss Hillary should have done to protest Israel and Iran and the domestic agenda, too numerous to even count up. Her voice could be heard again, oh wait a minute, I don’t really want to hear that cackle, never mind.

Happy 4th of July. Remember, the people in Iran and everywhere else, so, be thankful we still have, what we have. I’m smoking a pork shoulder (in it’s 8th hour now) for pulled pork tomorrow…wish ya’ll could come from some great fixins’ in Ft. Worth. First time it’s not a beef brisket, almost sacriligious here in Texas.

I am dispirited by the GOP infighting. Much of the punditry spent the last election cycle ridiculing Palin instead of going after pwecious elegant Barry.

That’s actually why what Sarah did has given me new hope. I feel like she’s ready to cast off the dead weight. And that’s what it’ll take to turn this country around. Same old, same old isn’t working. The same popularity and coolness contest that turns decent people when they are elected into crooks after a few years is making drivel out of the people who call themselves our leaders.

Sarah gets it. She knows we’re tired of all this crap.

Tomorrow I’m going to hold a sign at my state capitol that says: “WHY AM I HERE? http://veritasbelt.blogspot.com ” On that page are the reasons why I’m protesting. It’s way too much to pack into one slogan.

But I feel like what I’m fighting for is packed into the words “Sarah Palin”. She gets it. She really gets it.

I don’t think she’ll wimp out on us. I think she’s sharpening the claws to do some damage to this lion America is trying to ride.
