Close friend of Palin’s: She’ll seriously consider running for president

No way to tell if this is a real window onto her mind or just spin to salve the wound of a tough day, but the Palinistas deserve some hope.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin plans to remain extremely visible and will give serious consideration to running for president in 2012, but has made no decision, a close friend said after her startling announcement Friday that she will resign her office…
Those friends say she plans to give a series of paid speeches, and will also make free GOP appearances, raising money for the party and for issues. She also plans to help other candidates, collecting political IOUs for herself…
Friends said Palin brushes off hostile news coverage but feels that the ethics complaints in Alaska – accompanied by attacks in the legislature, and the relentless pounding she was taking at home – were taking a toll on her family and her state. So she believes the decision was selfless, the friends said.
But:
“She has never been able to deliver a succinct message and this one was all over the place when this really needed to be one of her best performances,” a Republican congressional official said.
“While it is absolutely true that people in Alaska were trying to tear her down with false charges, it doesn’t look good that when she was faced with adversity and attacks on her character that she threw in the towel. … She needed to go away for a while and bone up on issues. Truly bewildering.”
At the Corner, Mark Levin puts on a brave face and declares that she’s running and that’s that. On the flip side, here’s Ed Rollins — who was Huckabee’s campaign manager, remember — making a persuasive case for why this seems like a very, very strange way to launch a presidential bid. Not only did she make the announcement at a time traditionally reserved to bury horrible news but he’s right about her speech seeming hastily pulled together, replete with the bizarre lame-duck rationale, instead of polished at leisure the way one would expect you’d do for an announcement this big. Consensus on the right seems to be gathering behind the idea that she did this for the kids, to protect them and to spend more time with them, but if that’s true, why not make that the focus of the speech and give this presser on Monday morning, when the media’s rested and ready for a full week of new coverage? Quitting for her family only makes her sympathetic. If that’s the real reason, why obscure it?

Ok, she wasn’t launching a Presidential Campaign. So, her speech doesn’t have to be filled with policy proposals and amplified rhetoric about the greatness that is America and Conservatism, etc, etc. It was a speech about RESIGNING and NOT RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION. Quit putting this speech in a category it wasn’t intended to be in (a “launching of her Presidential campaign”), and then criticizing her for it.

Exactly. That’s why I don’t think this was planned. She can deliver a speech and this was totally nerves and stream of consciousness. She was hounded out of office by the Left and stabbed in the back by the GOP. They had enough I bet. Doesn’t mean she won’t make a comeback but right now this was a big F’ck it. F’ck the country. I’m not fighting alone. And, who can blame her one stinking bit?
TheBigOldDog on July 3, 2009 at 7:12 PM
Yes, the first quitter-in-chief. She’s too weak to endure ONE TERM as the AK governor, but she wants more responsibility as the POTUS? Yeah, right. The DNC just needs to keep pounding on her as an unstable person who abandoned her responsiblities. America hates quitters and won’t want this woman trying to lead. At this rate, she’d throw herself off the WH balcony on day two if she won. Next.
dcwvu on July 3, 2009 at 7:12 PM
She doesn’t come back from this. I just don’t see how. She might fool us all but this was too poorly-timed and wasn’t thought out at all. Her reasons are all over the place and some are just downright stupid. It’s either shrewd as hell and we can’t see it or it’s stupid as hell. I think in the end, it’s the latter.
You can’t defend quitting in a tough situation, even if it is about her family. What happens if she was elected President and the media continues to bash her kids? What happens when the heat is on? If I’m Mitt, I say – if you think Alaskan heat was tough, try Pennsylvania Ave. That’s crushing.

Sarah tried to warn them
But in their rectums they put their heads up high
All the time she warned them
But they only passed her by
She tried to tell them
But I guess they didn’t care
They turned their backs and
Left her standing there
All the destroyed parts of America that have fallen after him
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everything Obama trashed each time he closed a freedom door
Destroyed parts of America lost forevermore
Obama tried to get me to take a job
A while ago
When I finally saw it was just printing more fiat money for his cronies I didn’t want to go
The party Ronald Reagan gave to me
The Rinos just tore it all away
Now there’s nothing left for me to say
All the destroyed parts of America that have fallen after him
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everything Obama trashed each time he closed a freedom door
Destroyed parts of America lost forevermore
When years have passed they’ll start thinking
What fools they’ve been
They’ll look back into the past and
Think of way back then
They’ll know that America lost everything they thought that it could win
I guess they should have listened to their friends
All the destroyed parts of America that have fallen after him
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everything Obama trashed each time he closed a freedom door
Destroyed parts of America lost forevermore
Destroyed parts of America lost forevermore

Sarah Palin realizes this is the last shot to save this country. She’s is as angry as the rest of us and is now going to ratchet it up.
I think she is going to do a slash and burn across the county until her announcement to offically run and light a bon fire under the American grassroots.

How would the idiot who said this recommend she go away and bone up on issues? As others have pointed out, she really has not been out of Alaska that much. And what better way to go away than pull out of public office for a while?
As far as adversity, people act like what Palin has encountered has been mudane, when in fact it has been extraordinary. Anyone here think Obama could have withstood this kind of scutiny and attacks? Anyone? And remember Hillary’s tears during the campaign? Image if Sarah Palin had done that. Please.

I really wouldn’t be surprised if there was some HORRIBLE scandal and a newspaper of whoever was about to break it came to her with it. Very easy to imagine her offering to quit as governor to hide the story. Might explain why its all of a sudden and the speech seemed so rushed.

In case you haven’t noticed anything that is read as sympathetic for most people gets chalked up to chronic whining in Gov. Palin’s world. She is and has always been in a can’t win situation so requiring her to lay out her plans or reasons to satisfy your curiosity only helps you. Everyone will just have to see how this unfolds.

Gov Palin is not leaving Alaska in a mess or a recession, unlike how hussein left Illinois.
Gov Palin has a past record of working and fighting for her people,..unlike hussein who’s past record shows his fight against his people.

Palin/Mitt 2012 That’s the bumper sticker.
What will the LEFT do now without PDS? They already used up all the BDS juice….this does seem to be in unison with the Republican’s coming together a strategy maybe? Is there hope an actual ballast, for the extreme left running the country into the ditch? It’s past time for the Republicans to get their act together I wouldn’t put some coordination past them…folding her in nationally down the road…. some horse trading? After Mark Sanford’s meltdown, one can only hope someone is grabbing the reins of the Republican Party.

Sarah walked into the valley
With the truth clutched in her hand
She was only a girl, but she knew
Someone must take a stand
There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail
Into darkness, into danger
Into storms that rip the night
Never give in, never give up
But give thanks that the tyrant in the White House you can fight

I’m glad Palin stepped down. To be honest I’m not so sure I want her running for POTUS.
I want Palin traveling the country educating people, rallying people, encouraging people and getting things fired up. There is a conservative revival underway. And no AP, it isn’t a religious tent revival that you and your atheist pals like Hitch can snark at. It’s about educating people and motivating them to understand policy and how it effects their lives.
Palin can ignite an interest in politics that few others have the ability to match. Dang, I hope this is what she’s doing.
Cody1991 on July 3, 2009 at 7:23 PM
I wish her all the best.
It was costing her a fortune to defend those ethics complaints from some woman in Juneau that her lipstick was provided by some party and it was an undeclared benefit.

It bewilders me why any so-called conservative blogger, looking ahead to 2012, would believe that relentless attacks on any potential Obama opponent could possibly serve this country in any way. You’re either deliriously happy with the direction America is going or you’re stupid … which is probably redundant.
I don’t care if it’s Sarah Palin or Mitt Romney or Snoopy — if you’re campaigning against any of them, you’re campaigning for Obama. Knock it off or at least quit calling yourself conservative. Your desire to feel like an unbiased blogger is not this nation’s priority. Think about someone other than yourself and your comment count.
Ronnie on July 3, 2009 at 7:28 PM
She says she doesn’t want to serve the last year and a half as a lame-duck governor. Hmmm. Somehow, that didn’t stop Obama, who “served” only a couple of years in the U.S. Senate but spent most of his time away from Washington running for president. Of course, he didn’t stop cashing his unearned senate paycheck.

Charles said she might be gearing up for a run in 2016. He said that this black mark on the resignation would be irrelevant by then. I always thought 2016 would be her best and hope she sticks with it. Regarding a possible scandal, Charles said it would be highly unlikely. Here is Mark’s audio.

The reactions from various quarters are about what we would expect. One thing I think the more conventional thinkers have no real concept of is how sick to death many, many Americans are of “politics as usual,” and those who set the rules for it.
The politicians who do everything the way they’re “supposed” to invariably — invariably — end up selling out, in some or many ways, at least since Reagan left office. Invariably!
There was a time when I would have said, Wow, no one can get away with what Palin has just done. She’s shot herself in the head, politically.
But conventionality in politics is increasingly associated by voters with self-service, mendacity, moral pusilllanimity, and disingenuousness as a way of life. I am less and less impressed with it.
We’ll see where Palin goes, and what happens with all this. There are an awful lot of people who feel like the future holds some historic — epic — upheavals in store for us. I think it would be a grave mistake to write Palin off, and to think that the political path to 2012 or 2016 will be the stately-paced, predictable progression of our conventional imagination. There is no telling what will even be the major issues in 2012 — or if “overseas contingency operations” are all our uniformed military is engaged in by then.
J.E. Dyer on July 3, 2009 at 7:34 PM
Terrie;
Schmidt did not exactly give the woman any advice.
Besides, if we take her at her word she is leaving…why not leave her the hell alone. The state is in the hands of someone who is competent and after all she would have left had she and McCain won.
So just let her be. She is not asking your permission.
Terrye on July 3, 2009 at 7:35 PM
I think people are indulging in wishful thinking about her running. Clearly she’d be better than Obama or McCain or any one currently on the GOP horizon.
I can’t imagine that after the treatment she received from the media and the GOP that she has any interest in running.
Either the GOP has to stop eating its young and new candidates or it will die a permanent loyal opposition.
I am dispirited by the GOP infighting. Much of the punditry spent the last election cycle ridiculing Palin instead of going after pwecious elegant Barry.

Yesterday I’d have voted for her in a primary. Today, I wouldn’t, nor would I in 2012.
Even with the ridiculous ethics complaints, I can’t imagine that the pressures faced by the president of the US are less than that of governor of Alaska.
She cited what? Four different reasons for resigning? None of the reasons sounded all that compelling for such a drastic step. If it was the right thing for her personally, so be it- but she might as well resign her self from any presidential ambitions upon resigning as governor.
Sorry, Sarah. I still like ya and all, but after today, don’t expect me to trust you with the keys to the White House. We need a fighter, not a quitter.

Only because the press made it so. They didn’t talk about Obama’s polygamist dad, Michelle’s disappearing law license, the Biden girl’s drug use or any other issues of the supporting donk cast.
She owes the GOP nothing.

She may not be POTUS, but in the next 3 years she will make the king, and will almost certainly put her on the ticket as VP again…
There was zero chance of her being a player from Juneau, especially with all the frivolous charges…

So would I, which makes her political suicide is all the more disappointing.

I know it’s hard to keep a scorecard with so many posts, but I’m on Palin’s side. I’m bringing up AP’s argument yesterday about the advice contained those Schmidt emails. That’s all.

You aren’t alone. Since the announcement Palin has picked up
5,000 new Twitter followers. I doubt if they’re mad at her.

Sorry, I should have made myself clearer. I knew what you were saying—and I was trying to agree! LOL

Since so many of y’all know Sarah’s political fate for certain, I’d be much obliged if you would share Saturday’s Super Lotto numbers with me. Thank you.

Not to mention a book deal somewhere in the ballpark of 7 to 11 million…yup, whoever thinks she’s going away any time soon because she left a crummy, thankless gubernatorial post is on crack. Rock on, sista soldier.

Im going to reserve judgment on her being a quitter until I see what she does. If she continues to fight…then she didn’t quit, she passed the governor ball so that she can help the team win the game.
Conservative Voice on July 3, 2009 at 7:41 PM
If she’s supporting candidates, hopefully she will not be at ANY McCain fundraisers.

If we treat a public office as a prize, we should not be surprised when the official tries to enrich himself.
If we think we’re electing a king and not a servant, we should expect to be treated like peasants.

Sorry. I can only assure you that they will not be 00-00-00-00-00.

I like this. She can get people motivated like no one I’ve seen in a long time. She can get a lot more done quietly (for now) without being constantly and unfairly harassed. Her detractors may possibly think this is victory for them, but might also have just awakened the sleeping giant…

The only thing that will get a Republican elected in 2012 is a full-on meltdown of the Obama administration. As it stands, the GOP doesn’t have the wherewithal to mount a serious campaign for dogcatcher.
There is no ground game. The Republican bureaucracy and pundocracy is working directly counter to the base of support. There is no ethos to the GOP, no motive power. The party is degenerating into a melange of special interests and incoherent and often contradictory policy goals. It doesn’t have the constitution to refuse the trappings of power, and it doesn’t have the stones to commit to the pragmatism necessary to secure those trappings.
If I were Palin, I wouldn’t run in 2012 if begged. But I’m not Palin.

AS IF quitting for her family would be honored by her critics who denigrate her for HAVING the family.
Whoever actually doesn’t recall the outcry when McCain chose Palin to accompany him on the GOP ticket, DISHONEST is your identity. “It isn’t fair to her family for her to be in politics,” because she is Sarah Palin, not Peggy Noonan. That criticism NEVER LET UP.
Allahpundit, you ask the question as if sincere. But you know very well that regardless of Palin’s reason, there are going to be those who prematurely dance on her grave because from their own deceitful nature they CHOOSE to hate her.
