Breaking: Palin to resign within weeks? Update: Is her career over?

No word as to why but Stephanopoulos has a hunch. If it’s related to her plans for next year, which way should Palinistas be rooting? Presumably they hope she’s not running for reelection so that she can devote herself full time to building a presidential campaign, a la Tim Pawlenty, but there’s no telling with the ‘Cuda. Is she going national or going away?
She’s still a favorite to win if she runs again, but not nearly as much as she once was.
Recent polls put Governor Palin’s in-state approval rating in the low or mid-50s, respectable but a far cry from one-time ratings near 90 percent. Some tie the drop to what they say is her newfound proclivity for “red meat” conservative issues over pragmatic Alaskan interests. Others cringe at the family melodramas that have become tabloid fodder. Either way, the loss of support for “Sarah-dise” – the nickname used for Palin’s smooth-running early tenure – includes some notable figures…
Dissatisfaction is summed up by one bumper sticker: “Hey Sarah … the job’s in Juneau.”
In Palin’s defense, she spent most of the past legislative session in the capital, says John Bitney, a high school friend who was her legislative liaison until a falling-out with the governor got him fired.
There is also the challenge of balancing parochial Alaskan issues with the demands of being a national Republican star. “She’s focused on the national level now, and she’s playing in a league that’s pretty big,” says Mr. Bitney, now a legislative staffer…
John Schwochert, a Palin family friend, acknowledges that the governor’s in-state popularity has diminished, but that is probably because she has settled into her job. “Everybody here’s pretty satisfied with what she’s done for the state,” he says.
I’m not sure what to make of the fact that she’s doing this from Wasilla. That would suggest something momentous, but maybe she’s just home for the holiday. Exit question: If this is something big, why did she wait for one of the slowest days on the media calendar to do it? I’d like to think she’s tweaking them by forcing them to come into work this afternoon.
Update: Anticipating the announcement, Mark Halperin offers 10 reasons why Palin might not seek reelection. Note the last one.
Update: Not sure who their source is, but BNO says the speculation is correct.
Update: BNO is citing CNN, which is in turn citing a GOP source close to Palin. Stay tuned.
Update: Here’s the CNN story. Fox News is breaking live with it too now. Wow.
Update: The more I think about it, the more this portends that she’s running for president rather than going away. If she’s planning on dropping out of politics for a while, there’s no reason to announce that she’s not running again this early. Granted, it helps clear the way for any of her underlings to start campaigning for governor, but she could tell them privately now and let them start organizing quietly. Also, the symbolism of announcing on July 4th weekend suggests grander plans. Or is she just trying to take advantage of the slow news cycle?
Update: A bombshell from BNO, which is reporting that Palin intends to resign within weeks rather than serve out her term. Why?
Update: Here’s the report from NBC affiliate KTUU that she’s stepping down in the next few weeks. The most charitable possibility is that she’s so eager to run for president that she can’t be bothered with the governorship anymore, and even that possibility ain’t too charitable. This has taken an ominous turn.
Update: Hmmm. If it’s a scandal, would CNN’s sources be offering quotes like this?
“She thinks she has accomplished goals she has set forward,” one of the sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said. “She sees what a positive influence she has had on people’s lives from traveling the country in the last year.”
Update: Says Ace, “It’s over. You can’t resign from a governorship and then run for higher office.” I agree. Placing your ambition over your commitment to the state looks shady, especially for someone who won’t have a single full term as governor under her belt for the primaries.
Update: Geraghty agrees with me and Ace.
David Schuster is offering a typical sneering tone, but it doesn’t make it any less accurate: “If it’s true that she’s leaving the governorship before her first term is complete, her national political career is done.”
A broken clock can be right twice a day, and Schuster is right here. If Sarah Palin wishes to someday be President of the United States, then she had to serve at least one full term in statewide office. (Yes, Obama had been in the Senate for about two years before running for president, but he had a lot of stars align for him at the right moment. Beyond that, at some point, “but Obama did it that way” isn’t a persuasive argument.)
Departing with little or no warning, after about 30 months in office, is beyond surprising. I’m sure the Lieutenant Governor will do fine, but there’s definately a sense of leaving with work unfinished and as her career was just beginning to take off.

No, she didn’t. Again, she was cleared of that complaint as well.
You’re failing at trying to be a conservative.

Exactly, as they have already been doing no doubt. This was a selfless move. All these tv idiots are stunned because they are part of the self annointed political elite for whom selflessness in an unknown concept.

I agree with you. With the constant attacks and litigation I’m sure she saw herself as a liability to the work they were doing in Alaska and decided what was best for her state.
I’m listening to a one of her staff right now and this guy is livid about the attacks against this woman that only started after she was named by McCain. Then the full force of their vile attack machne went after her and didn’t stop once the election was over. If anything, he said they moved to the state to litigate her as a full time job.
Oh and the jacket lawsuit? She was wearing her husbands jacket at HIS snowmobile race. The nerve!
He is also saying that the people of Alaska sees through this and even with all the attacks against her, her pole numbers are still in the 90’s!
vapig on July 3, 2009 at 5:43 PM
Maximus:
No, she did not fire the guy, he still has his job. In fact the Democrats pushed for that to come out close to the election. However, in the end the case was dismissed as having no merit. I believe it was the Personnel Board that cleared her on that.
Terrye on July 3, 2009 at 5:44 PM
They’ve already cost thousands of hours of work from the Alaskan administration, and over $2 million in tax money defending against the frivolous charges.
Enoxo on July 3, 2009 at 5:44 PM
The liberals have their image candidate, and now so do “conservatives”. But, tell me, as a “conservative”, why should anyone flock to Palin? Sure, she’s a woman (meaningless to me), she’s a former beauty queen (And?), a lifelong member of the NRA (well, tickle me pink- what’s she done in support of 2nd Amendment rights?), she likes hunting (So? I’m not looking for another hunting buddy). Her Dad was a school teacher (Swell. Well my Dad is an electrician. I don’t much care about her Dad). Her son’s in the Army (Cool, I’ll be sure to say hi if I see him), and she’s the head of her state’s National Guard (Great, aren’t all governors? It’s not like she’s leading them in combat or training them.). She’s pro-life (Oh good, finally a policy point). She shared McCain’s views of Russian aggression in Georgia (Oh, so she also supports lots of talk, little action, alienating more of our allies?), supported the Surge (Wonderful. I’m glad she’s figured out the value of this operational/strategic idea. So what are her War on Terror policy ideas?), and shot down some pork (Good to hear. What are her thoughts on taxation, role of gov’t, state vs. federal roles, etc.) She supports capping carbon emissions (as of Oct 08), supports windfall-profits taxes, is a card-carrying feminist, supports a “path to citizenship” for illegal immigrants and no amnesty for illegals who have violated federal law (huh? isn’t immigration law…), and supports a “smaller and smarter” Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (riiight- like that is their problem.) She bought into the idea of climate change. And now she’s a quitter who abandons her obligations… I could go on, but I think you all get my point. Show me, don’t tell me she’s a conservative. Show me, don’t tell me, she’s good for this country. I care not for extraneous dribble, which is what most talk surrounding this woman is.

Maximus is giving us the proof that Sarah is making a brilliant move. As long as she was the Governor, the frivolous complaints would continue to be filed and continue to be a distraction.
Look at how many posts Maximus is distractus us with here?

fogw on July 3, 2009 at 5:47 PM
Really crappy thing to say and you’re not taking into account the constant lawsuits that are being filed against her and having to use the states resources to fight them.
She has said as much and since she is a favorite target the business of the state suffers.
I believe she is being altruistic.

I liked Palin because without a lot of money or support from political insiders she managed to become a Governor and accomplish something for her state.
You may not understand why people like her, but I can not understand why people feel the need to be so mindlessly hateful about her. Maybe she is just too American.
Terrye on July 3, 2009 at 5:49 PM
Or save your money, she’s now able to earn her own. (Books, speeches, Fox News talk show, etc.)
jonknee on July 3, 2009 at 5:49 PM
“is a card-carrying feminist,”
er, a feminist in the original sense perhaps, but obviously NOT the infantacide crowd to which they’ve degenerated …
“supports a “path to citizenship” for illegal immigrants and no amnesty for illegals who have violated federal law”
er, that was her “forced” position as part of john’s “briliant” campaign. if it indeed remains that today, that is about the ONLY troublesome point in your several hundred word screed that, with no HINT of irony, attacks her alleged superficiality [!!]
Buckaroo on July 3, 2009 at 5:52 PM

This is the end result of James Carville introducing the politics of personal destruction. Alaska has to lose the services of an effective governor for the next year and a half because politics has gotten so dirty.
Sarah is breaking the mold and all of the talking heads inside the beltway just don’t get it. Today represents the awakening of the “silent” majority in middle america. We are as mad as hell at what is going on and we are not going to take it anymore.
karenhasfreedom on July 3, 2009 at 5:55 PM
Sarah Palin should be given full credit for awakening the consciousness of many true patriots across the nation who just want their country back. She gave us hope during the election for a brief shining moment with her honesty, intelligence, authenticity, and heart. She gives us something to aspire to and puts the corrupt, lying, sleazy, politicians that are now destroying our nation with glee to shame.
Whether she stays in politics or enters private life, she will do just fine and always remain an excellent example of what a true American patriot is.
Naysayers will have their fun tearing her apart. Let them. It seems to make them happy as clams. But they can’t take away the fact that she raised our consciousness to what it really means to be a patriotic, hard working, honest, and proud American. That will stick in their craw for a long time to come. Sarah will be fine, just fine.
Miss Molly on July 3, 2009 at 5:55 PM
Whatever dude.
From what I understand she is resigning because if she does the charges go away and it “frees up the state to do business and not focus on her”.
If she is innocent that is great…but didn’t she have these charges BEFORE the VP campaign?
Fact:most politicians are corrupt.
Yes we all know Sarah is not a saint..look at her own shotgun wedding and the fact that she is an outspoken advocate for celibacy until marriage and that both she and her own underage daughter got pregnant is hypocritical,is embarassing to us and makes us all look bad.
MaximusConfessor on July 3, 2009 at 5:58 PM
No! We’ll do no such thing! It appears you have already made up your mind. If you were interested you could google her record yourself. That you don’t suggests either apathy or an inherent hostility towards her that no facts would change.
vapig on July 3, 2009 at 6:01 PM
She didn’t have to do anything–she chose to quit. If she can’t take the heat of being governor of Alaska, there’s no way she can take it nationally. Does she thing they would stop being mean if she was president?

Yes, and she sees the vacuum of leadership within the GOP (especially after Ensign and Sanford) and Obama’s poll numbers coming down while the economy comes apart at the seams. I think she feels now is the time to get ahead of the curve and start speaking up for the conservative movement in ways that were not possible as governor of Alaska..
petefrt on July 3, 2009 at 6:08 PM
I AM SO PSYCHED!!! We are finally going to have our voice against the socialism that is taking over this country. Sarah was compelled to serve in this regard. That is her only motivation.

vapig on July 3, 2009 at 6:30 PM
I fail to see how this corrupts her as a politician trying to serve her country. Please tell me how getting married and having a family makes her corrupt? She isn’t being hypocritical at all. She is a woman who learns and grows and understands that there is a “best” way to do things in life. Speaking out for the better way is a good thing wouldn’t you say? As an example, lets say someone is against smoking. They know it is bad but once, long ago they used to be hooked. Does that mean they can’t push an anti smoking agenda? Does it make them a hypocrite that embarrasses everyone around them?
Not really sure why it embarrasses you, but it doesn’t embarrass me at all. As a matter of fact, I’d be proud to stand next to her or even call her friend. The only people that is upsets are her enemies. See, Sarah is a positive person who builds up rather than destroys and has a very human side. That is very irksome to those who don’t like her.
btw, I would be afraid to tell you the things I have done in my life. Heck, I KNOW it would embarrass you. lol!

Incredibly funny… this is such an apt turn of events!
Add this to everything else that we’ve learned about Palin since she became McCain’s running mate and her resignation reinforces just about *everything* the left thought of her when she first appeared on the scene.
I’m just smiling now when I think of the things people said to defend her Presidential potential… All of your efforts to defend her were for naught.

Yes but you are not world renowned as a spokeswoman for celibacy until marriage. She is, and that is why it is hypocritical. I can understand her own situation and can understand that she may have believed a different thing at that time and changed, but when her own underage daughter gets pregnant while sarah is on the spokewoman circuit, it screams hypocrisy. Combine that with the fact that her unwed daughter ends up a single mother for no reason at all, is embarassing to everyone who is serious about what Sarah claims she believes.

Any parent worthy of respect is a spokesperson for no sex for their teenagers — were you raised in a cave? The fact that her daughter is trying to help others avoid her mistakes isn’t hypocritical, it’s self-sacrificing. That’s because by so doing she exposes herself to the irrational scorn of those who don’t care about her, but hate her mother with demonic passion.

OMG, poor Gov. Palin! I’m sure the idea that her political future would be over if she resigned NEVER occurred to her! (Gee, let’s not give her credit by thinking it’s possible that that was the point.) Alaska’s loss—the media’s loss. Who to kick around now that they can’t make a mountain out of something less than a mole hill now??? Well, we all know who it WON’T be.

HAHAH Lol! A Troll Support Group!
Yes, Max. Tell us why you deep seated hatred of Sarah Palin caused you to be so overcome that you over stepped the bounds of truth. Please, just let it out. Let it all out. We all here will grow.

I still fail to see how this corrupts her. I know you think it does because you term it hypocrisy, but I see it differently. In my mind it shows me she learns her lessons and has developed wisdom. Shared wisdom, which usually comes from experience laced with adversity, is a good thing. She speaks from her beliefs now. People change.
I also don’t expect leaders to be perfect, but I do expect them to speak wisely based on their experiences. She isn’t a murderer, a thief, an embezzler, or a racist, but a leader who wants the best for people. What she is now is not the same person she was 20 years ago. If this is the standard you hold all politicians to, then there is no one fit to serve anywhere in the United States.
btw, I know this subject has been hacked to death, but please leave her daughter out of the equation. It has absolutely nothing to do with whether Sarah herself is or is not corrupt. Some kids don’t listen. Heck, I didn’t. Dragging her daughter’s individual choice into it shows a level of bitterness that is quite perplexing. I mean if Sarah was telling her daughter to ignore celibacy I could see how that would make Sarah corrupt, but I hardly doubt that was the case.

Max is a lib, Molly, which requires a series of crutches, braces and retainers for the mind. They don’t grow that way naturally, you know.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. I would rather let the process decide if she was guilty or not.
csdeven on July 3, 2009 at 7:54 PM
