Breaking: Palin to resign within weeks? Update: Is her career over?
posted at 2:25 pm on July 3, 2009 by Allahpundit
No word as to why but Stephanopoulos has a hunch. If it’s related to her plans for next year, which way should Palinistas be rooting? Presumably they hope she’s not running for reelection so that she can devote herself full time to building a presidential campaign, a la Tim Pawlenty, but there’s no telling with the ‘Cuda. Is she going national or going away?
She’s still a favorite to win if she runs again, but not nearly as much as she once was.
Recent polls put Governor Palin’s in-state approval rating in the low or mid-50s, respectable but a far cry from one-time ratings near 90 percent. Some tie the drop to what they say is her newfound proclivity for “red meat” conservative issues over pragmatic Alaskan interests. Others cringe at the family melodramas that have become tabloid fodder. Either way, the loss of support for “Sarah-dise” – the nickname used for Palin’s smooth-running early tenure – includes some notable figures…
Dissatisfaction is summed up by one bumper sticker: “Hey Sarah … the job’s in Juneau.”
In Palin’s defense, she spent most of the past legislative session in the capital, says John Bitney, a high school friend who was her legislative liaison until a falling-out with the governor got him fired.
There is also the challenge of balancing parochial Alaskan issues with the demands of being a national Republican star. “She’s focused on the national level now, and she’s playing in a league that’s pretty big,” says Mr. Bitney, now a legislative staffer…
John Schwochert, a Palin family friend, acknowledges that the governor’s in-state popularity has diminished, but that is probably because she has settled into her job. “Everybody here’s pretty satisfied with what she’s done for the state,” he says.
I’m not sure what to make of the fact that she’s doing this from Wasilla. That would suggest something momentous, but maybe she’s just home for the holiday. Exit question: If this is something big, why did she wait for one of the slowest days on the media calendar to do it? I’d like to think she’s tweaking them by forcing them to come into work this afternoon.
Update: Anticipating the announcement, Mark Halperin offers 10 reasons why Palin might not seek reelection. Note the last one.
Update: Not sure who their source is, but BNO says the speculation is correct.
Update: BNO is citing CNN, which is in turn citing a GOP source close to Palin. Stay tuned.
Update: Here’s the CNN story. Fox News is breaking live with it too now. Wow.
Update: The more I think about it, the more this portends that she’s running for president rather than going away. If she’s planning on dropping out of politics for a while, there’s no reason to announce that she’s not running again this early. Granted, it helps clear the way for any of her underlings to start campaigning for governor, but she could tell them privately now and let them start organizing quietly. Also, the symbolism of announcing on July 4th weekend suggests grander plans. Or is she just trying to take advantage of the slow news cycle?
Update: A bombshell from BNO, which is reporting that Palin intends to resign within weeks rather than serve out her term. Why?
Update: Here’s the report from NBC affiliate KTUU that she’s stepping down in the next few weeks. The most charitable possibility is that she’s so eager to run for president that she can’t be bothered with the governorship anymore, and even that possibility ain’t too charitable. This has taken an ominous turn.
Update: Hmmm. If it’s a scandal, would CNN’s sources be offering quotes like this?
“She thinks she has accomplished goals she has set forward,” one of the sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said. “She sees what a positive influence she has had on people’s lives from traveling the country in the last year.”
Update: Says Ace, “It’s over. You can’t resign from a governorship and then run for higher office.” I agree. Placing your ambition over your commitment to the state looks shady, especially for someone who won’t have a single full term as governor under her belt for the primaries.
Update: Geraghty agrees with me and Ace.
David Schuster is offering a typical sneering tone, but it doesn’t make it any less accurate: “If it’s true that she’s leaving the governorship before her first term is complete, her national political career is done.”
A broken clock can be right twice a day, and Schuster is right here. If Sarah Palin wishes to someday be President of the United States, then she had to serve at least one full term in statewide office. (Yes, Obama had been in the Senate for about two years before running for president, but he had a lot of stars align for him at the right moment. Beyond that, at some point, “but Obama did it that way” isn’t a persuasive argument.)
Departing with little or no warning, after about 30 months in office, is beyond surprising. I’m sure the Lieutenant Governor will do fine, but there’s definately a sense of leaving with work unfinished and as her career was just beginning to take off.

Seriously. You people are now just plain scaring me. You’re making Ron Paul supporters seem sane.
Listen closely: we already LIKE her. You don’t need to convince us with super-duper excitement and lots of capital letters.
All you had to do was 1) have her supporters act mostly sane, and 2) not have bizarre stuff like this happen.
Epic fail on both counts.
C’mon, guys. If you really support her, support her. Quit driving all the sane people away. The Cynthia McKinney for President strategy isn’t a great one.

Correct, normal will not work. And business as usual is all I see coming out of the republican party. I am not ready to roll-over and become a drone to state. I have kids and I want them to be free to choose a career and a doctor and decide where they live. Obama wants to shut the door on the future. Sarah is going to kick the door wide open and Obama will get flattened in the process.

And there we have it… The Paulian supporting the most Progressive Republican aside from Arlen Specter … Oh wait… Well, that’s OK, as long as she’s a “True Christian.”

Palin could probably start out getting 75k-100k a speech.
She has obviously added up some numbers and balanced that against the aggravation of being in public office. Smart move.

The idea that someone could not even finish their one Governor term, and then be a favorite for POTUS, just shows the intelligence level of many around righty blogsville.
Palin is dumping the aggravation to go make some real money in the private sector. Simple as that. She chose a slow news day to make the announcement as low key as possible. She ain’t dumb. Anything but.

OK, after watching the speech and thinking about this a bit. I think it was an honorable move to step down. The left and some on the right are doing their dead level best to dig up dirt and torpedo her before the 2012 campaign gets started in earnest. She could not do an effective job as governor while fighting a multitude of stupid ethics charges coming in every day. So she felt it was in the best interests if her constituency to turn the reins over to the Lt. Gov.
Bill Kristol may be right. In a few years we will either say this was a stupid move or the greatest political ploy in history.
At least this should disarm the assassins, after a while.
The downside is that I believe the dirt digging will increase for a while. The MSM will not believe that there is anything honorable about this. They will think that they were about to nail her on something.

csdeven: To be quite blunt, if the GOP run ads against Palin’s candidacy for President in 2012 (presuming there is such), then the GOP will suffer for it. Not Palin.
To say this in the most plain sense possible, Palin represents the rank-and-file of conservatives these days. The GOP does not. Therefore, any attempt to go after Palin in 2012, by either side, will backfire with the conservative base.
Palin’s conservatism is one of the best shots America has for introducing a third political party. Most conservatives feel betrayed by both current parties. So Palin can either fight the GOP establishment for returning the GOP to its base, or exile the GOP to the centrist ‘fringe’ of their traditional power base and create a new party from those that the GOP establishment no one listens to.
This should prove interesting, one way or another.

You might not say that if you lived in Illinois. He quit being an actual Senator in the fall of 2007. True, he kept the title and the paycheck. But he never held a single hearing of the Foreign Relations subcommittee he chaired, he missed hundreds of votes and basically the only time he showed up was to vote against John Roberts and Samuel Alito, get a million-dollar earmark for Michelle’s employer, and vote FOR funding for the war in Iraq despite his campaign rhetoric against the war. I’ll put Sarah Palin’s 3 1/2 year record as Governor up against that any day!

Lanceman on July 3, 2009 at 4:56 PM
So, let me see if i understand. For as long as i’ve been paying attention to politics, the people who kept their current position while running for president have always been criticized (it shows they think they can’t win, they can’t devote time to constituents etc.). While people who resigned their position to run for president have been applauded (Bob Dole).
But now, it’s all of a sudden a bad thing to leave your current position to run for president. A cynical person might conclude that the people criticizing Palin for leaving would have also criticized her if she stayed. But of course, we’re not allowed to point out that some people just hate Palin and will criticize her no matter what, because we’d be called cultists. Isn’t that right?
clearbluesky on July 3, 2009 at 4:56 PM
This unleashes her from Alaska. Serving as a governor while every Dem and his mother is crucifying her has been like trying to box with both arms tied behind her back.
I bet she’ll be on the road for worthwhile Republicans for 2010. She’ll electrify the campaigns of every Republican that she appears with. I look forward to her helping John Kasich in Ohio’s gubernatorial race and Rob Portman’s Ohio senatorial race.
Godspeed, Sarahcuda.

Maybe she and the Lt. Governor and their joint staff decided together what was best for the State of Alaska. Maybe this was a joint thought process and these people actually CARE about their state? There are still people in this country that believe in doing the right thing.

Her statement.
the_nile on July 3, 2009 at 4:59 PM
This is a genius move on her part I think.
She has the potential to be monumentally influential in politics. Her ineffectiveness was due to a media that hated her as well as a number of Republicans.
So think about it. If she’ not running for office then the press has no justification for tearing into her life as they have. Also, if she’s not running then all of the critics within the Republican party don’t see her as a threat anymore.
She can actually be more effective and more influential by not running for office. She’s a celebrity now and she excites and motivates most of the conservatives. If she just speaks publicly and supports the candidates she believes in, she could move this country towards the right without holding any office at all.
hisfrogness on July 3, 2009 at 4:59 PM
This is very different. The 2012 election is almost 3 1/2 years away. Yes the actual campaigning needs to start sooner, but it’s not like it would’ve severely hampered her chances had she served until early 2011(or whenever the new Alaskan governor is sworn in) and then announced her candidacy for President.
And as for someone like Bob Dole, the man had been in politics for decades. He didn’t need to stick around a few more months in the Senate to pad his experience.

Wether she runs for 2012 or not, this action by Palin will not get the media off of her back. We all know what is going to happen now. She will be called a QUITTER, etc etc etc. She will continue to get beat up and bashed.
I hate to admit it, she will never have a chance to be elected on a national ticket. The media/hollywood are far too powerful. Her reputation was ruined long ago and it cant be repaired. I wish that were not so but it is.
It isn’t that she is dumb and corrupt like they want to make her out to be, the difference between her and the rest of the politicians is the fact that the media has chosen to go after her from all angles. Meanwhile, ignoring most of the crookedness of the Congressman, Senators across the country.

That’s what it looks like when a normal person is slam danced by the machine and decides to unchain the shackles and fight back. Those were not the words of a politician. Those were the words of an American – old school. It’s payback time. I.can.not.wait. What a gift on the fourth of July. I’m listening to the pundits and thinking – guys – you just don’t get it. You don’t have the slightest clue. Spin until your heads explode but you will never understand just how disgusted we all are with the BS and the crap called Washington and NY. That speech with the baby fussing and the ducks quacking in the back ground – Sarahs nerves clearly strung tight as a piano wire – was historic. She coming for all of you. Typical dismissive comment. Thanks for proving MY point.
I saw the announcement and thought she did well. I agree with her that this has been costly for her AND Alaska. I dont think this should be seen as a “quitter” or anything else. I DO understand how men dont “get it”. I didnt like Hillary but I was angered by the way she was treated during the campaign. The VILENESS directed to Sarah but especially her CHILDREN has disgusted me beyond belief. Sarah tried to warn them
But in their rectums they put their heads up high
All the time she warned them
But they only passed her by
She tried to tell them
But I guess they didn’t care
They turned their backs and
Left her standing there
All the destroyed parts of America that have fallen after him
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everything Obama trashed each time he closed a freedom door
Destroyed parts of America lost forevermore
Obama tried to get me to take a job
A while ago
When I finally saw it was just printing more fiat money for his cronies I didn’t want to go
The party Ronald Reagan gave to me
The Rinos just tore it all away
Now there’s nothing left for me to say
All the destroyed parts of America that have fallen after him
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everything Obama trashed each time he closed a freedom door
Destroyed parts of America lost forevermore
When years have passed they’ll start thinking
What fools they’ve been
They’ll look back into the past and
Think of way back then
They’ll know that America lost everything they thought that it could win
I guess they should have listened to their friends
All the destroyed parts of America that have fallen after him
All the lonely feelings and the burning memories
Everything Obama trashed each time he closed a freedom door
Destroyed parts of America lost forevermore
Destroyed parts of America lost forevermore
When years have passed they’ll start thinking
What fools they’ve been and what they have gone and done
They’ll look back into the past and
Think of way back then
They’ll know that America lost so much of what it had won
I guess they should have listened to their friends

I think I have pretty well-established credentials when it comes to being charmed by Sarah Palin, but that statement, as a statement, was simply terrible. Rambling and not at all persuasive as an argument for her decision. More Gibson/Couric than GOP convention speech. She shouldn’t have said a thing without getting Matt Scully—or some similarly talented speechwriter—on the case first. As to how this decision plays out ultimately, we’ll see. There’s plenty of time if (as I assume) she wants to run in 2012, and she obviously has plenty of capital with Republicans. But not an auspicious start.
hmmm Lowry comes off a little smarmy.
Upstater85 on July 3, 2009 at 5:03 PM
Had she announced she was not seeking re-election, the attacks, and bogus ethics complaints would have ramped up eve more. That would have ended up costing Alaska even more money (already over $2 million and time) spent to defend against them.
This is a good move, and in tune with her views as a true conservative.

They have already started with the bashing for the latest move. Just think, if the media treated every politician this way, this would be no big deal. The Palin bashing would not affect her reputation as much. But since the media and hollywood, has to this day, made her a target, completely ignoring the true crooks and liars in Washington, she has no chance in hell.
I hate the media, I hate hollywood, and I hate the idiots in this country that eat up everything they say. We are a celebrity cultured and liberal nation, whether we like it or not. Too many in our society really just have no clue about much of anything because they’re too busy following the lives of hollywood.

I’m going to repost part of my rant from above because there were some typos (really we need to have a way of editing our posts):
——–
Politicians by and large are not normal. Normal people do not drive young women into rivers, leave them to drown, and then run for re-election to the senate. Normal people do not get blowjobs from 20-year old interns in the Oval Office and then claim it “depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is. Normal people do not walk off their job, fly down to Argentina to be with the soul mate and leave their family behind on Father’s day. Normal people do not proposition men in airport bathrooms and then claim it’s just due to “their wide stance”. Normal people do not serve divorce paper to ailing wives in the hospital. Normal people do not vote on major spending bills WITHOUT reading them. Normal people do not claim that they saved thousands and thousands of jobs when unemployment is going up. Normal people do not lie with the ease that politicians do.
———–
Let me also add as I read the posts on this blog: You People Need To Get Out More. Stop seeing EVERY DAMN THING through a political lens. No, Sarah is not running for President. No, this is not some clever plan to unseat Obama. No she is not having an affair. No she is not pregnant with Bristol’s next baby. This is a case where a public figure is resigning for the good of her family and her constiuents and – for once – it’s the complete honest 100% truth.
The fact that so many of you don’t recognize integrity and truth when it’s staring you in the face is pretty sad. Pundits and politicians get paid for spouting that kind of nonsense. What’s your excuse?

problem — those who quit their posts [dole] more often than not LOSE.
those who don’t [zero, w, jfk, etc.] WIN.
/yes i know examples of quitting winners and staying on losers also exist, but keeping one office while running for another is what happens, and walking away from the job in the middle of a term, ESP. since there is [apparently] no scandal, she simply wants to focus on “her issues” — well, that’s a NEGATIVE no matter how you look at it …

From Glenn Becks Twitter:
“True about Palin dropping out and stepping down. GOOD. Get out of the system. Be a CREATIVE extremist as MLK said.”

Now that she has stepped down, she is outside of the mainstream political parties. The same people who go to tea parties will be drawn to her and away from the other parties. This is truly a selfless move on her part.

I’m listening to it now; doesn’t sound rambling so far, just highlighting some things from her administration.

Rush has a blonde honey and serves red meat at his parties. Big difference.

My favorite line:
READ THE STATEMENT.
She may be making a mistake, but this is her choice, and she’s making it because it’s best for Alaska and her family. She is going to surprise some people.
