Breaking: Palin to resign within weeks? Update: Is her career over?

posted at 2:25 pm on July 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

No word as to why but Stephanopoulos has a hunch. If it’s related to her plans for next year, which way should Palinistas be rooting? Presumably they hope she’s not running for reelection so that she can devote herself full time to building a presidential campaign, a la Tim Pawlenty, but there’s no telling with the ‘Cuda. Is she going national or going away?

She’s still a favorite to win if she runs again, but not nearly as much as she once was.

Recent polls put Governor Palin’s in-state approval rating in the low or mid-50s, respectable but a far cry from one-time ratings near 90 percent. Some tie the drop to what they say is her newfound proclivity for “red meat” conservative issues over pragmatic Alaskan interests. Others cringe at the family melodramas that have become tabloid fodder. Either way, the loss of support for “Sarah-dise” – the nickname used for Palin’s smooth-running early tenure – includes some notable figures…

Dissatisfaction is summed up by one bumper sticker: “Hey Sarah … the job’s in Juneau.”

In Palin’s defense, she spent most of the past legislative session in the capital, says John Bitney, a high school friend who was her legislative liaison until a falling-out with the governor got him fired.

There is also the challenge of balancing parochial Alaskan issues with the demands of being a national Republican star. “She’s focused on the national level now, and she’s playing in a league that’s pretty big,” says Mr. Bitney, now a legislative staffer…

John Schwochert, a Palin family friend, acknowledges that the governor’s in-state popularity has diminished, but that is probably because she has settled into her job. “Everybody here’s pretty satisfied with what she’s done for the state,” he says.

I’m not sure what to make of the fact that she’s doing this from Wasilla. That would suggest something momentous, but maybe she’s just home for the holiday. Exit question: If this is something big, why did she wait for one of the slowest days on the media calendar to do it? I’d like to think she’s tweaking them by forcing them to come into work this afternoon.

Update: Anticipating the announcement, Mark Halperin offers 10 reasons why Palin might not seek reelection. Note the last one.

Update: Not sure who their source is, but BNO says the speculation is correct.

Update: BNO is citing CNN, which is in turn citing a GOP source close to Palin. Stay tuned.

Update: Here’s the CNN story. Fox News is breaking live with it too now. Wow.

Update: The more I think about it, the more this portends that she’s running for president rather than going away. If she’s planning on dropping out of politics for a while, there’s no reason to announce that she’s not running again this early. Granted, it helps clear the way for any of her underlings to start campaigning for governor, but she could tell them privately now and let them start organizing quietly. Also, the symbolism of announcing on July 4th weekend suggests grander plans. Or is she just trying to take advantage of the slow news cycle?

Update: A bombshell from BNO, which is reporting that Palin intends to resign within weeks rather than serve out her term. Why?

Update: Here’s the report from NBC affiliate KTUU that she’s stepping down in the next few weeks. The most charitable possibility is that she’s so eager to run for president that she can’t be bothered with the governorship anymore, and even that possibility ain’t too charitable. This has taken an ominous turn.

Update: Hmmm. If it’s a scandal, would CNN’s sources be offering quotes like this?

“She thinks she has accomplished goals she has set forward,” one of the sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said. “She sees what a positive influence she has had on people’s lives from traveling the country in the last year.”

Update: Says Ace, “It’s over. You can’t resign from a governorship and then run for higher office.” I agree. Placing your ambition over your commitment to the state looks shady, especially for someone who won’t have a single full term as governor under her belt for the primaries.

Update: Geraghty agrees with me and Ace.

David Schuster is offering a typical sneering tone, but it doesn’t make it any less accurate: “If it’s true that she’s leaving the governorship before her first term is complete, her national political career is done.”

A broken clock can be right twice a day, and Schuster is right here. If Sarah Palin wishes to someday be President of the United States, then she had to serve at least one full term in statewide office. (Yes, Obama had been in the Senate for about two years before running for president, but he had a lot of stars align for him at the right moment. Beyond that, at some point, “but Obama did it that way” isn’t a persuasive argument.)

Departing with little or no warning, after about 30 months in office, is beyond surprising. I’m sure the Lieutenant Governor will do fine, but there’s definately a sense of leaving with work unfinished and as her career was just beginning to take off.

You’ll do.

fogw on July 3, 2009 at 4:41 PM

Buckaroo, I disagree. I don’t see it as a bad thing depending on what she does over the next few months. If she comes out strong saying a lot of things she couldn’t say as Governor, fine. She could be the one to really stand up against Obama now in the public arena and not have to worry about her statements having a negative impact on Alaska. If she were Governor, the administration could punish Alaska but as a private citizen, she can say whatever she wants.

Lets just see where this goes.

Her resignation doesn’t make it any less likely that I will vote for her and people voting is what matters, not political formulas.

Anyone running with an “R” after their name will get the Palin Treatment.

Yes. To my knowledge she has never accepted a 4 year political job and quit.

Monkei on July 3, 2009 at 4:37 PM

Is that better or worse than accepting a 6 year job and in effect quitting (but still accepting the pay check)?

I hope this is because of family and/or professional ambitions, and not scandal.

She is more like your average American, than the elitist buffoon in the White House.

csdeven on July 3, 2009 at 4:39 PM

You lost me. She’s on an independent path, here. I don’t know that she’s on a path to 2012, but she wants to help change things, now. And the GOP can’t run effective ads even against a marxist America-hater, so I don’t know why anyone would worry about the GOP.

progressoverpeace on July 3, 2009 at 4:42 PM

Monkei:

Why is it Democrats are so obsessed with this woman’s children. Calling her daughter a whore, making fun of her baby son. Why is it somehow okay for these people to behave with no class at all…and yet smirk and sneer at other people?

BTW, Andrea Mitchell is not and never has been the Governor of anything. She is a highly paid journalist with an obvious agenda.

Terrye on July 3, 2009 at 4:42 PM

One can’t praise her for being an “outside the beltway” thinker then criticize her for not using “inside the beltway” logic

These politicians can claim to be outside the beltway to the cows come home … the problem is once they get into DC they surround themselves with all the beltway people they can find to run their administration. Just ask George Bush who ran as an outsider from Texas and proceeded to place good ole boys inside in the beltway into key jobs. The ones not from the beltway, well you saw how that worked out at FEMA and DOJ …

Then you got the other side of the coin, like Jimmy Carter who took everyone he could find outside the beltway and you see where that got him.

Bush and Carter, two of the worst ever.

Monkei on July 3, 2009 at 4:42 PM

What a woman!!!! Hey MSM, you got your wish!

Why don’t you do your job and start snoopin
in Obama’s trash cans!!!!

yoda on July 3, 2009 at 4:25 PM

Silver lining: Obama has used Palin as a shield for his own fumblings. MSM will have no option but to shine their spotlight on Obama. Betting there are wet pants in DC as they go from their glee at initially hearing this to the coming reality.

Sarah, enjoy some family time, study hard and allow Obama to fumble on his own.

journeyintothewhirlwind on July 3, 2009 at 4:42 PM

I think Sarah’s leaving will acomplish one goal. Within one week the MSM will have to start focusing on the Job Obama is doing rather than focusing on the Job Sarah was doing.

William Amos on July 3, 2009 at 4:40 PM

Dude! Put down the crack pipe! They’ll only focus on giving him a tongue bath. It is writtenand so shall it be.

Blake on July 3, 2009 at 4:42 PM

I don’t blame the lady a bit, though she should have finished her term as Governor. However, as long as she held an office, the Leftist Media would be trashing her. Maybe life is too short and family more important than Maureen Dodo’s last burp about whatever.

I wish her well, whatever comes ahead. And it fits…she is independent of all the political manure now, leaving it behind, at least for awhile.

The supreme insult is indifference, and she can look at Letterman, whatever he says, and say eff you, bucko, you can’t get at me.

Harry Schell on July 3, 2009 at 4:42 PM

OK, Sarah supporters, join me by donating at Sarahpac now. This is OUR way of letting her know we “get” what she is doing and are totally behind her.

karenhasfreedom on July 3, 2009 at 4:37 PM

I don’t get what she’s doing.

Perhaps you could explain it?

She is going to be formidable. I am becoming very excited about this.

karenhasfreedom on July 3, 2009 at 4:37 PM

Why? Other than confirming liberal opinion of her and raising concerns from a lot of non-Koolaid-guzzling conservatives, what has she just accomplished?

With a full term in office and some foriegn policy experience in the Senate or a future cabinet – or perhaps even some executive experience in private industry – I would have enthusiastically supported her for higher office.

Now? Now I have serious concerns. Now I’d have to choose a Romney or someone similar in the primary – a known, experienced figure. And I don’t even like Romney.

If there’s some miraculously great reason for this announcement, you can count me as on board. But this brainwashed zombie approach of “everything Sarah does is perfect and it’ll just make her a better candidate for Prez!!!” is just killing your chances.

To win the White House, you have to appeal to people like me. And unless there’s some really, really good reason for what she just did … you lost me. And she’s gone.

Professor Blather on July 3, 2009 at 4:43 PM

Palin could probably start out getting 75k-100k a speech.

She has obviously added up some numbers and balanced that against the aggravation of being in public office. Smart move.

peacenprosperity on July 3, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Bingo!

Now for the rest of you: Has anyone here listened to her speech? Do you have any reason not to believe her own words? What the heck is wrong with you guys?

I take her at her word.

IrishEi on July 3, 2009 at 4:43 PM

I think Sarah’s leaving will acomplish one goal. Within one week the MSM will have to start focusing on the Job Obama is doing rather than focusing on the Job Sarah was doing.

William Amos on July 3, 2009 at 4:40 PM

That’s a good point. Sarah generates a lot of attention based on her celebrity. With the comparatively boring Pawlenty and Romney left there may be more spotlight left for Obama’s mismanagement.

simplesimon on July 3, 2009 at 4:43 PM

Its funny the GOP anger at her. It seems we are more upset that she isnt running that at the notion she sacrifice all for our cause.

William Amos on July 3, 2009 at 4:43 PM

Watched the speech. Here’s what I heard.

1. Accomplished a hell of a lot as Governor and has met all her goals and promises.
2. Ethic complaints cost state 2 million dollars. Cost her half a million personally. Money Alaska needs for teachers and infrastructure. Opponents will continue to use the state to further their campaign negatively as long as she is governor.

Summation. She fell on her sword to allow the state govt to move on with her agenda. She is going to hit the ground running as a private citizen to earn money for her legal bills and she will be free to do and say whateverthehell she pleases from here on out and no one can say Boo to her ass. She was restrained by McCain. She was restrained by the office of Governor. Now? She’s not.

Jesus.H.Christ – an ass whooping is coming for someone – a lot of someones. This is not so much a quitting as an unleashing of the demon.

BrideOfRove on July 3, 2009 at 4:37 PM

EXACTLY CORRECT

And I will support her EVERY STEP OF THE WAY! I am FURIOUS about the way she has been treated and will take my money AND my vote wherever she leads! GO SARAH!

The BIG surprise is going to be HOW MANY WOMEN LIKE ME SUPPORT HER. The talking head men are slamming her, even on FOX..they are in for a BIG BIG SHOCK.

labwrs on July 3, 2009 at 4:43 PM

For all y’all saying she’s “quitting,” you need to know that Sean Parnell is like a clone of Sarah Palin politically speaking. They are identical in their political views.

It’d be one thing if her Lt. Gov. came from another wing of the GOP. But he doesn’t. They are both diehard libertarian Republicans.

ericdondero on July 3, 2009 at 4:38 PM

I think this is pretty much it. This, in her view, was the best way she could promote Parnell – by making him the incumbent and allowing him to fully concentrate on running the state.

This announcement is bad for her, but I think she’s trying to prevent the good-ol-boy pork-barrel crowd from taking over there once again.

rockmom on July 3, 2009 at 4:32 PM

I agree with your previous post. Despite the naysayers Sarah probably made the right decision for Alaska. She’s become such a target that it must be impossible to govern. Barring any family concerns (which I hope is not the case) this may be a great decision for several reasons.

We need someone who is free to get out and articulate the conservative message, someone with appeal, energy and patience. Sarah can do that. If this is what she’s planning to do, I’m all for it.

I hope she makes some big, fat speaking fees along the way. She does have a rather young family to take care of. They need her, and we do as well.

I wish her all the best.

You do not even know what you are talking about and besides you need to get with your friends and get your talking points right. They said Bush’s problem was that he made a point of bringing too many from Texas and as such did not kiss up to the powers that be on the Hill as much. Now Pelosi is a real inside the beltway politician. all the way.

Terrye on July 3, 2009 at 4:44 PM

Romney is not a viable candidate. Because I promise you he will be getting the “Palin Treatment.”

Yeah but at least Romney can handle the pressure. Sarah Palin has proven extremely thin skinned.

terryannonline on July 3, 2009 at 4:44 PM

My hatred for the media knows no bounds. Can’t say I appreciate the Benedict Arnolds in our midst – so willing to provide fodder against Palin – eager not to play “Hewitt” but to play “Judas” instead. Hope you’re happy now.

I was in the crowd of thousands turned away from the Sarah Palin rally last October – over five thousand were already in the stadium and there was no room for us (her handlers continuously put her in venues that were too small). I went four hours early to get in line to see her. The support in red states for her is massive. MASSIVE. John McCain did not draw those crowds even in big cities.

Nobody else can draw crowds like that in our party. But all you GOP Palin bashers can be happy now. We’ll have eight years of the socialist nincompoop. Good on you. Romney will not – and I would vote for Romney – inspire the voters. He’s the John Kerry of our party.

Carolina Kat on July 3, 2009 at 4:44 PM

She will now draw massive crowds and build a base of core conservatives like seen at the Tea Parties. There will be a ground-swell of support. Both the GOP and the Obama administration (and his compliant media) are scared to death now. They won’t be able to keep her in a box now. This is BRILLIANT!!

I think Sarah’s going to make some money, keep a high national profile, and test the waters. It seems like a decision she made with her family, not her political advisers. If she were resigning to start a presidential campaign, it would make more sense to let Greta and Fox News know and schedule the announcement at a better date. As it was, they were literally the last of the big 3 cable news channels to cover her statement.

tjexcite on July 3, 2009 at 4:45 PM

For anyone who is thinking that resigning the Governorship is not the way to go, politically, let me remind them that these are not normal times. Our nation is on the edge of total collapse. Normal won’t work against the America-hating junta in Washington. This is a war for the soul of our nation, and it is final. Palin made the right move, whether she is looking for a political future, or not.

karenhasfreedom on July 3, 2009 at 4:37 PM

Let’s put a little reality into the mix.

Despite all the punditry unfamiliar with the concept of somebody willingly giving up power, this was a shrewd political move on Palin’s part if she wants to run for national office. In July 2009 she isn’t even close to being ready to take the Presidency (look at what a bang up job the filthy liar in the White House is doing with his marginally better resume’).

She leaves public office which means she can better control her exposure to public audiences. She can go on speaking tours without accusations she has abandoned Alaska. She has the time to build a network for 2012 and change the SNL “I can see Russia from my backyard” perception that many have of her. The media will be forced to back down without the drip drip drip of re-reporting the hatred of McCain’s sore loser staff.

I remain skeptical that Palin will be the best choice in 2012 but this was truly the first time I get a glimpse of the serious politician and not the PTA hockey mom in a made-for-Disney storyline.

I DON’T BLAME HER A BIT.

REPUBLICANS SUCK JUST AS BAD AS DEMOCRATS. IN FACT I’LL NEVER VOTE FOR ANOTHER REPUBLICAN. A CONSERVATIVE YES. A REPUBLICAN NO. THE REPUBLICANS CAN ALL GO TO HE11!

PRAY TO GOD SHE RUNS AS A CONSERVATIVE AND TELLS THE REPUBLICANS TO GO SUCK DIRT.

Griz on July 3, 2009 at 4:47 PM

could this be prelude to her not just going full-bore with the movement that she has already started, but even a run as a 3rd-party candidate?

just a thought… ;-)

homesickamerican on July 3, 2009 at 4:47 PM

How lame. Not Palin stepping down as Governor, but the supposed conservatives like Ace and Allah that are hoping that she’s done. Why do we need liberals with people like them to tear the party down?

kvader on July 3, 2009 at 4:47 PM

How many days did hussein put in?..144 days? Just as Palin said “Some jet set around on the tax payer dollars, still pick-up a pay check”

She has my vote!!!

christene on July 3, 2009 at 4:46 PM

‘Hussein’ didn’t quit to run – nor did anyone else that I can think of.

Klassy name, btw!

Sarah has to push now to expose the democrats as much as possible before the 2010 elections.

I think she just did a throwdown to Pelosi-Obama-Reid, and maybe some fat cat GOPers. Hell’s a’comin’. Now is not the time for her supporters to go wobbly,…this may be exactly the spark we need for some reform. Slash and burn, baby!

a capella on July 3, 2009 at 4:46 PM

She’s fighting for 2010 , if there isn’t a conservative base in both houses , 2012 is almost worthless.

the_nile on July 3, 2009 at 4:48 PM

PrezHussein on July 3, 2009 at 4:46 PM

Screw the GOP and the Dems. This is the beginning of the new political party a lot here have been begging for. I expect to see guys like DeMint jump on this bandwagon.

I for one am excited about this news.

Now we can replace her role with Ms. Olympia Snowe!

She is an Orthodox Christian,a northeasterner from Maine and she appeals to moderates and independents.

It’s about time for an Orthodox politician to take the white house.

MaximusConfessor on July 3, 2009 at 4:49 PM

Ok it is all on Palin know. she is free to do what she wants. No anklebitters keeping her tied down, noethics charges on a daily basis. she can campaign for 2010 house seats. What she makes of the next 4 or 5 months will be the key.

To those that think she is done think again

Says Ace, “It’s over. You can’t resign from a governorship and then run for higher office.” I agree.

It is reasonable to make the argument that her resigning the Alaskan governorship will decrease the odds of her ever becoming President, and it is even plausible to make the argument that her resigning the Alaskan governorship will decrease the odds a lot of her ever becoming President, but to maintain, and I quote “It’s over. You can’t resign from a governorship and then run for higher office.” is, frankly, about the most patently illogical thing I have ever heard.

sadly, AP called and canceled his solar moped order due to the expected loss of Sarah Palin to drive his sitemeter.

portlandon on July 3, 2009 at 4:49 PM

OK, after watching the speech and thinking about this a bit. I think it was an honorable move to step down. The left and some on the right are doing their dead level best to dig up dirt and torpedo her before the 2012 campaign gets started in earnest. She could not do an effective job as governor while fighting a multitude of stupid ethics charges coming in every day. So she felt it was in the best interests if her constituency to turn the reins over to the Lt. Gov.

Bill Kristol may be right. In a few years we will either say this was a stupid move or the greatest political ploy in history.

At least this should disarm the assassins, after a while.

The downside is that I believe the dirt digging will increase for a while. The MSM will not believe that there is anything honorable about this. They will think that they were about to nail her on something.

Sarah Palin’s departure is unconventional… but that’s why everyone liked her–she was unconventional, and real.

This isn’t the end of her by the long shot. Whatever she chooses to do, but it private sector, or a future Presidential bid, she’ll do it to full success.

Why aren’t my comments posting?

Emily M. on July 3, 2009 at 4:50 PM

Sarah Palin had the most critical flaw that a politician simply cannot have:

She was normal.

She looked at a situation where: 1) She couldn’t do her job as Alaskan governor because she was being attacked nationally all of the time and subject to politically-motivated and baseless lawsuits, 2) Her family was constantly being upheld to scorn and ridicule including her young child and an infant with Down’s syndrome (!!!!). Now any normal person would say, “I’m not THAT important to the well-being of my state” and decide for the good of the state and the good of her family to get OUT of the limelight.

Politicians by and large are not normal. Normal people do not drive young women into rivers, leave them to drown, and then run for re-election to the senate. Normal people get blowjobs from 20-year old interns in the Oval Office and then claim it “depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is. Normal people do not walk off their job, fly down to Argentina to be with the soul mate and leave their family behind on Father’s day. Normal people do not proposition men in airport bathrooms and then claim it’s just due to “their wide stance”. Normal people do not serve divorce paper to ailing wives in the hospital. Normal people do not vote on major spending bills WITHOUT reading them. Normal people do not claim that they saved thousands and thousands of jobs when unemployment is going up. Normal people do lie with such ease that politicians do.

If I could extract the recessive gene that creates a politican and banish it from the gene pool, I would do it in a heartbeat. If a politician ever moved in next to my hourse, I set up the biggest damn security fence you ever saw, assuming that I didn’t put my house up for sale that very day.

Thank you Sarah for what you’ve done and what you’ve tried to do. You have my respect and I wish we could simply have a government comprised of citizen legislators instead of the twisted remenants of humanity that we are burdened with now.

PackerBronco on July 3, 2009 at 4:50 PM
