Poll: Obama slipping further on economy

posted at 1:35 pm on July 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Rasmussen’s new poll, taken before the release of June’s unemployment numbers, shows significant slippage for Barack Obama on the economy, his central issue.  Only 42% of American voters give him excellent or good marks on handling the economy, the lowest ratings he has yet received.  His personal approval rate has fallen to 53%, and the “passion index” has dropped to -2:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows that 33% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-five percent (35%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -2. This is the third straight day the Approval Index has been below zero (see trends).

A Rasmussen video report notes that 42% now give the President good or excellent marks for handling the economy . That’s his lowest rating to date …

Overall, 53% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance so far. Forty-six percent (46%) disapprove.

Obama has hit a new high among those rating him fair or poor on the economy at 56%.  Just a week ago, 47% approved of his economic policies, as opposed to 50% disapproval, a margin of 3% — a statistical dead heat.  Obama had been seen more favorable than not on the economy as late as the second week of May, when he held a 51%-48% advantage.

The demographics of his decline portend more bad news for Obama and his Democratic allies in Congress.  Only the youngest voters support him on fiscal policy, and only barely, 52%-46%.  Every other age demographic above 30 years of age has majorities now showing disapproval.  Independents have begun to run away in massive numbers; they now oppose him 75%-23%, a huge break away from Obama and a sign that his supposed moderate stances have been exposed as shams.  Every income level except the lowest also has majorities disapproving of his handling of the economy.  Voters outside the “political class” oppose Obama 65%-33%.

Obama doesn’t fare well on national security, either.  Rasmussen reports that Obama only has 44% approval on these issues, and 55% opposing him.  Majorities of both women and men view him disfavorably.  Every income level has majorities opposed to Obama, and independents disapprove 68%-31%.  Obama only wins within the $60K-$75K income level; even his base of support among the lowest income earners narrowly reject Obama’s national-security policies, 52%-47%.

Obama isn’t just coming back to Earth in the polling.  He’s losing independents and demonstrating his radical bent on policy, and more and more Americans have begun to see it.

So essentially, people were comfortable in 2004, so they reelected Bush. If Obama makes his constituents comfortable, they’ll vote for him… Um, isn’t that what the Stimulus is.

Upstater85 on July 2, 2009 at 2:02 PM

I don’t see how the stimulus is making anyone feel comfortable. It hasn’t saved or created jack squat.

People were comfortable in 2004 because unemployment was around 5%, taxes were lower for everyone compared to 4 years earlier(not just for the “rich”), we hadn’t been attacked in over 3 years, and gas prices were low.

Somehow I don’t see 2012 looking quite the same.

Doughboy on July 2, 2009 at 2:09 PM

Only one solution: A new trillion $$$ stimulus package!
Plus buy a second dog.
Plus blanket the covers of all the news and fashion magazines with Michelle and her recession-proof formula for toned upper arms.

but, wasn’t the purpose of the TARP to give the banks the money to go ahead and sell these worthless mortgages, take the hit to the books, and move on?

james23 on July 2, 2009 at 2:04 PM

That was the claim, but TARP wsan’t close to big enough to handle that problem, from the beginning … so they didn’t even try. Instead, the Federal Reserve just took a couple of trillion of sh!t collateral for cash and is trying to hide it away for a while.

Meanwhile, TARP morphed into a permanent slush fund for the Sec of Treasury to have fun with.

But none of this compares to The Precedent’s administration now trying to sell the idea that the purpose of government (the federal government, specifically) is to provide competition in the private markets (a la the public health insurance plan). This is a really new one. I’m not sure how anyone explains it with a straight face.

angryed on July 2, 2009 at 2:17 PM

Obama was asked in 2 different debates what he was going to do differently, given the economic forecast…which obviously turned dark and gloomy in the campaign. I was struck by his adamant answer: Nothing.

Well, now we know. He’s going to “pretend” to pass his agenda. I’m actually not as concerned about cap-and-trade, because I think it’s going to be just another metric established. They will confuse voters even more by throwing another “system” into the mix. Voters will have to remain sharp to see where the next hit is coming from on their pocketbooks.

He pretended to offer mortgage bailout help to people. Now, the results are in, and I had several friends with good credit and a VA loan who attempted to get a refi….they aren’t even answering the phone. It was a complete sham.

He pretended the stimulus was about jobs. It wasn’t. It WAS the State bailout. It probably helped in that regard to soften the blow, but it certainly won’t turn the wolf away from the door of big metro-blue states, where the lion’s share of welfare benefits are doled out.

He pretends now to support healthcare reform and pretended to be against lobbyists. They are, in Hillary’s words in one debate, nibbling him to death. They will win. He’s not even pretending to try on this one. We’ll not get relief.

He is a union guy. Nobody particularly wanted that. The SEIU didn’t even deliver Nevada to him in the primary. BUT…logic did not prevail. Apparently, Mich won. The GM bailout made NO sense to anyone but that union.

His numbers will, of course, fall. He has made a classic mistake. He thought everyone was buying him so deeply that they would continue to discount his actions. Of course, not. Voters are not stupid. Neither are some of you right who blow off people and call them stupid.

Voters are pretty darn commonsense, in the aggregate. They have figured him out. He’ll bump along in the 50s pretty soon.

What many conservatives may hate to hear? That’s good enough.

whoa, flyfisher, that is brutal, if that 1% market value is representative of the value of the other banks’ mortgage assets, they are in deep deep trouble, and more of them are going to fail.

but, wasn’t the purpose of the TARP to give the banks the money to go ahead and sell these worthless mortgages, take the hit to the books, and move on?

james23 on July 2, 2009 at 2:04 PM

I don’t know if that result is representative of the MBS on the books of all the big banks. My brother-in-law is a bank analyst for a hedge fund. His believes 30% of par is a close estimate. In other words, he believes most of the banks MBS are overstated by 70%.

As for the purpose of TARP…I believe it was to prop up certain entities. It wasn’t designed to actually fix anything. It was a taxpayer looting operating, pure and simple. Right now there should be a massive criminal investigation of Goldman Sachs, Paulson, Bernanke, Ken Lewis, Citibank, etc. We’ve been scammed!

Battle, the stupidity of liberals is boundless. We could have 50% unemployment in 2012 and they would still be blaming bush for the economy. People forget, or are just too dumb to know, that the President can’t spend a nickel without Congressional approval. The Democraps have controlled Congress since ‘06.

Watching Democrats trying to run the country is like watching a two-year old trying in vain to assemble a puzzle or figure out how to work a toy. Sooner or later, an adult (conservative has to step in with a solution. It’s always been that way and will always be that way. Sooner or later the idiots who keep electing Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Shumer, Frank (I could go on forever) will vote for conservatives to fix what the Democraps have destroyed.

If Toxic Assets Death Rattle is correct, and it is, PPIP is a bust. I’m sure you know this.

From Karl Denninger’s post:

The simple fact of the matter is that for the PPIP to “work” assets must be sold into it at somewhat of a realistic price.

But if banks do that, they will be forced to recognize losses they (in conspiracy with their regulators, including The Fed, OTS, OCC and Treasury) have been hiding for the last two years – losses that are sufficient to force all of them under critical Tier Capital Ratios and thus subject them to FDIC seizure and liquidation.

Paulson sold it as a fund to buy the toxic assets from the banks. He talked about using market mechanisms for price discovery and a bunch of other junk, but his main point was to go buy the assets, directly. It was all a bad joke, but that’s what they said.

Then he changed his mind when he realized he could do anything he wanted with the cash.

I agree that’s how he sold TARP. I have grown so cynical that I question whether he ever intended to buy toxic assets. Someone(s) pulled hundreds of billions of cash out of the system, causing a liquidity crisis. That was then used to scare CONgress into doing whatever Paulson wanted to prevent a crash. I believe the whole crisis last fall was total manipulation to get that bill passed. Despite said manipulation, it is true the banks are sitting on billions of bad paper and they are in trouble. I believenow there has been collusion and gaming of the system at the highest levels of Wall Street, the FED, the White House, and in CONgress which prevented them from recognzing their losses and going under.

myrenovations on July 2, 2009 at 2:36 PM

Don’t be so sure of that. During the depression Dems kept control even as it was obvious to anyone with a brain that the New Deal policies weren’t working. Never underestimate the stupidity of the American voter. I wouldn’t be surprised if in 2010 the Dems get 65 seats in the senate and 300 Reps in the house.

angryed on July 2, 2009 at 2:31 PM

We live in a very different world. We have an instant gratification mentality. There’s no way Obama and the Dems will be given as much leeway as FDR got.

Besides, FDR never attempted something like nationalized healthcare or crap-and-betrayed.

flyfisher on July 2, 2009 at 2:36 PM

In the end it really doesn’t matter why they sold the MBS at a 99% loss. What matters is that banks are sitting on worthless collateral while Americans are being told our banking system is on the road to recovery when “they” (the powers that be) know full well it is a sham.

Upstater85 on July 2, 2009 at 2:31 PM

I just had this really perverse thought: would the election have turned out differently if Palin had, um, you know, like….not gone to term with Trig?

Just sayin..

You’re truly clueless and a crappy troll.

That’s because CrapNTrade will be exactly like AnninCA’s current gas and electric bills.

Although, this time, when she claims it, it will be true.

This is a reference to what I was talking about. According to Congressman Kanjorski, we had an electronic run on our banks when $550 BILLION was pulled from our system in a matter of hours. Who did that and why? And why has no one investigated it? No one can convince me there hasn’t been massive manipulation going on.

Knucklehead on July 2, 2009 at 2:47 PM

What was Lincoln said? Oh yeah. You can all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.

I think Obama is going to find that out, along with Pelosi and Reid. Their little Obamabots might not remember that things in the economy were a lot better back in 2006 before the Democrats lied their way into power, but the rest of America just might.

Yep, I can remember Nancy Pelosi promising to get the price of gas down from the high price of $2.25 a gallon. Three years later $2.25 looks pretty damn good.

As for national security, sucking up to Chavez while he abandoned the people of Iran is such an obvious misstep that it is hard to ignore.

AnninCA you really need to learn something about economics if you’re going to get involved in these discussions. Yes, another metric is established: one with double-digit unemployment, slow growth, and a lower GDP. Happy now?

Something isn’t right about the bearer bonds story. I don’t think we will ever know the truth. You will never get me to believe the mafia tried to counterfeit $134 billion in bearer bonds. The numbers are just too big. They aren’t dumb enough to believe they could cash bonds of that size when only countries and central banks play at that level.

bluelightbrigade on July 2, 2009 at 2:52 PM

Ann:

Cap and trade has far reaching effects. Here in Indiana they are telling us to expect higher unemployment and much higher light bills if it passes. That would really screw us up. And for what?

I heard Nina Easton say the other day that the bill creates trading for emission rates. And what is more that trading will take place on Wall Street. So, after all the trashing of traders by this administration they want to hand them something like this?

I am sorry, but I think it will be the next big boondoggle, the next thing that blows up in all our faces and costs the economy billions of dollars in waste and fraud.
