Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on July 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Hey, what do Helen Thomas and Chip Reid know? Both of them accused the White House of staging a phony town hall on health care yesterday, before the event began. Robert Gibbs couldn’t contain his incredulousness, repeatedly replying that the press should wait to judge the event, and that he was absolutely positive that the questions for Barack Obama would contain dissent from his policies.

The Washington Post report on the “town-hall event” shows how clumsily Obama faked it:

In the stage-managed event, questions for Obama came from a live audience selected by the White House and the college, and from Internet questions chosen by the administration’s new-media team. Of the seven questions the president answered, four were selected by his staff from videos submitted to the White House Web site or from those responding to a request for “tweets.”

The president called randomly on three audience members. All turned out to be members of groups with close ties to his administration: the Service Employees International Union, Health Care for America Now, and Organizing for America, which is a part of the Democratic National Committee. White House officials said that was a coincidence.

A coincidence?  They just happened to open the doors and let anyone in, Obama just happened to call on only three people — and all three just happened to be organizers for Democrats and their allies?  Even the WaPo couldn’t swallow that ridiculous line.

Sam Goldwyn once said that sincerity was the key to success — once you learned to fake it, you’d succeed.  I think Goldwyn would tell Obama and his White House that they failed at it yesterday.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

They are afraid to have Obama be asked a real question by a real citizen — they understand Barry’s limitations better than the adoring media does.

Their fear of another “Joe the Plumber” moment dictates their management of these bogus events.

cruadin on July 2, 2009 at 8:11 AM

Just like it’s a “coincidence” that all this spending and nationalization of our economy has led to further job losses.

canopfor on July 2, 2009 at 8:13 AM

People like Axelrod, Obama, Emmanuel, and other despots dead and alive, think it would be NUTS to not have all these events scripted. They’re not being clumsy. This is how they think a political system ought to work, and one of the ways that you hang on to power. It’s an acknowledgment that their ideas fail in the free marketplace, but they never asserted otherwise, and don’t believe otherwise. And each time we on the other side sit and stare with out mouths open catching flies. This is how totalitarian govs operate.

Not sure how factual this is, but I heard on the radio this morning that the woman who stood up and said she had a tumor and no health insurance to cover it actually works for an organization close to/sponsored by BHO. I’m sure BHO’s political war chest is large enough to cover her health care….

The Obamateurism is not that there was such a staged “town hall” session, but that it was so transparently a staged event. Though to be fair to Dear Leader, at least this is one area of His administration that there is actually transparency.

Helen Thomas hasn’t seen such a staged managed affair since Noah tried getting people onto the ark.

America is better than this. We deserve better than this.

I still find it very hard to believe that so many people are willing to sacrifice principles, throw-away all common sense and completely lose all dignity in exchange for a handout.

I mean, I get it, the perpetual losers of the country are basking in their newfound glory, they finally have a voice to pity them and pander to them. The greedy, rich folks are being knocked down a peg (well, except their favorite actors, musicians, sports stars, and the new celebrities – politicians) and that makes them feel good.

Is this the new American dream Obama is offering? Yes, one day you too can rise to mediocrity. We can all be mediocre together, just don’t question The One. Who cares if you are a loser with no future, Obama will turn everyone else into losers, too.

reaganaut on July 2, 2009 at 8:24 AM

The icing is off this cake… My (very) devoted Democrat father told me last night, that this president is the biggest phony he has ever seen. My father is the last left leaning member of my family to turn his back on this administration. Approximately 50 Democrats in my family are now ripe for the taking if the GOP gets out there and packages their message around the theme “by the people, for the people, of the people.”

My Liberal lawyer older brother recently told me that he might not ever vote Republican, but he will not be voting Democrat any longer. I simply told him that would be a good starting place for his recovery.

A coincidence? They just happened to open the doors and let anyone in, Obama just happened to call on only three people — and all three just happened to be organizers for Democrats and their allies?

These occurrences are just statistical anomalies. Even though it is very long odds that all of those things, when added together, are just a “coincidence”, it speaks much to how the universe revolves around Obama.

Those are the same kind of statistical oddities that now prove “the stimulus is working” (BHO, 7/1/09).

Yoop on July 2, 2009 at 8:28 AM

Robert Gibbs couldn’t contain his incredulousness, repeatedly replying that the press should wait to judge the event, and that he was absolutely positive that the questions for Barack Obama would contain dissent from his policies.

If this wasn’t a staged infomercial, which it was, how does Gibbs say that there will be dissent with absolute certainty? Furthermore, it’s not about the dissent but how the questions are answered. Obama continues to lie about the costs, numbers of uninsured, and what his plot to nationalize healthcare means to average Americans. Beyond calling the filthy liar out for these ham-handed attempts at controlling the media, somebody has to nail the bastard down to specifics not anecdotal stories and fake tears.

I’m basically trying to cut off the “everybody does it” charge and I agree that this administration’s stacking of the deck does seem to cross the line. Remember how crazy people went over that Jeff Gannon guy? I am pretty sure during the Bush administration, allowing a solider to have a question constituted a skewed attendance. My main point is that everything that could be known about a questioner would be. Example, the woman being treated for cancer who can no longer work and keep her insurance. The public was left thinking that this woman would have to discontinue treatment and die. A real media would fill in the blanks and really what happens, if an employer can fire a person who is ill or what institutions step in to take up the slack.

There will be a staged press conference sometime today so that BHO can take tweeted questions, all of them from anonyomous twitterers, and address all with the same answer:

The brain wash at within the union is very powerful. I believe what has happened to my family in No. Ca., is simply that their work has dried up and they have been forced to go outside of the union for work in order to put food on the table and maintain a roof over their heads. The brain wash has not been there for several months now, and the reality that the union couldn’t keep them busy has set in. The unions made outrageous promises to their members if Obama were to be elected; promises that have not been kept. The unions got their members to donate money they did not have on the promise that if Obama gets in office, the work will return in droves.

Unions are a disease…

The Democrat Party has gone ultra left for the past 2-3 decades minimum. Reasonable hard working Democrats are starting to see this under this administration. They are. Tip O’Neil did and Nancy Pelosi does wield tremendous power as the Speaker with a solid majority. They both have used that power to reward loyalists and punish enemies (the way Jane Harmon was treated by Pelosi, for example). The difference is that O’Neil used his power to be a dealmaker with the other side. Pelosi uses her power to further partisan strategy without any regard for the consequences of the legislation she is rubber stamping for the filthy liar in the White House. O’Neil would have at least made the POTUS (of whichever party) offer up something up in return for support.

NO AMERICA IS NOT BETTER THAN THIS!

America is getting exactly what it deserves. America turned it’s back on God, it’s principles, and hard work and perseverance. America will allow itself more media commentary, more analysis, more attention to be given to a sick, slimy pedophile, than the real problems in this country. America will elect a man who associates with terrorists, belongs to a racist church preaching not about God, but about hate, and continue to support people that think that death to a multi-murderer is BAD, but an innocent child is good.

We’re INSANE if we think we deserve any more than we’re getting today.

America is better than this. We deserve better than this.

reaganaut on July 2, 2009 at 8:24 AM

And, there are times when we get the exact government we actually deserve. This is one of those times.

Look at that campaign 2008…when it began in 2004…and the constant battering of Bush by all the vocal outfits, and then the lies, and more lies…Goebbels was correct, as was Stalin…tell a lie big enough and tell it long enough and it becomes accepted doctrine.

Hopefully we can Carterize this wound…one term for Obama and no terms for Dems for at least 12 years, perhaps 16, God willing, longer, if and only if we, the people, get off our collective backsides and take back this Nation, one precinct at a time, one county at a time, with a message that we, the people, are and should always be “the government” and those Conservative principles that we have allowed to be mocked in just about every powerful corner of this nation…to include within the Republican Party…actually work and work well for all of the people.

We have to make that necessary case that government is not the cure-all for all of our social ills…that government in truth has no place engineering society…we, the people, can engineer our own society, thank you very much.

I may not live to see it, my kids will, and I hope my grand kids will live it…but enabling the Rights of the individual and making fast individual freedom safe from the shackles of government is the only way we, the people, can make this Nation what it deserves to be….great, proud, unafraid and that shining city on the hill that the rest of the world can either emulate or envy.

And if other nations do not like us…that is their problem to deal with…as we have more important things to think about and accomplish.

I watched it live, knowing nothing about the controversy behind the event. After Obama’s speech, a lady introduced the Q&A in the most suspicious way, something like:

“I can assure you that President Obama has not seen these questions, no sir, no ma’am. One thing you can count on is that President Obama did not himself pick these questions, and you can take that to the bank, ladies and gentlemen, I mean, okay, if this card right here had a question on it, let me tell you this, he would be seeing it for the first time, it wouldn’t be some question that was like ‘hey I totally recognize that question because I picked it beforehand.’ So, ladies and gentlemen, as we continue our totally legitimate Health Care For All forum, you can bet your life savings on one completely true fact: President Obama did not himself, personally, as an individual, select these questions beforehand because, like that would be totally wrong.”

A little exaggerated, but not too far off.

I turned to my wife and observed: “it’s fixed”.

Hopefully we can Carterize this wound…one term for Obama and no terms for Dems for at least 12 years, perhaps 16, God willing, longer, if and only if we, the people, get off our collective backsides and take back this Nation, one precinct at a time, one county at a time, with a message that we, the people, are and should always be “the government” and those Conservative principles that we have allowed to be mocked in just about every powerful corner of this nation…

Unfortunately, oureducationalindoctrinational system has encouraged an entitalment an lazy society. This is the “me” attitude. I pray that the gathering storm will not dissipate as time moves on. Even if positive changes occur we will all have stand vigilent over or representatives. Or else..

Opps..Wrong button. Sorry!

HoustonRight on July 2, 2009 at 9:34 AM

the questioners from the town hall were chosen from pro-Obama organizations and interviewed before the event took place. Interesting.

Cindy Munford on July 2, 2009 at 9:15 AM

Oh, the pre-event interview wasn’t so much to instruct them, it was to gather information on the poor sucker and take his picture, should things go wrong. You know, in case things were to veer excessively “off script”.

I’m not kidding. Obama’s staff has a history of roughing up the pre-selected shills who unwittingly make the Master look stupid, which you can imagine isn’t too hard to do, after all, this is a man who botched the Oath of Office.

jeff_from_mpls on July 2, 2009 at 9:34 AM

Now some of you may say I am being mean, but I am going to say this anyway, because it is a legitimate concern.
Regarding that morbidly obese lady with the tumor, what makes her think she would qualify for any treatment under Obamacare? She is middle aged, morbidly obese and has cancer – sounds like a no brainer to me. I bet she would be denied care or put on a waiting list until it was too late under Obama care.

I am inclined to believe she wouldn’t get care. What did he say, take medication for the pain to minimize the discomfort until the end. I am sure the people in the audience think that they would be the exception at the same time rationalizing that the government knows best when they see those around them being denied.

She definitely thinks she is a potential recipient of Government largesse because so far, Obama has said nothing to suggest otherwise.

We’re still in the stage of the Revolution where everybody thinks they’re one of the People whom the Glorious Leader is fighting for.

Only in a later stage do concrete individuals begin to realize that they aren’t the one Glorious Leader is fighting for. In fact, some people will learn they are the object of Glorious Leader’s rage.

And by that time, there’s no more free media, and lots of innocent people get hurt, with nobody even noticing.

To your point, and with all earnestness, I too predict that woman will die alone at a young age, surrounded by family, having no access to treatment. Outcast and despised, while Obama and his Wife stroll the Seine. Absolutely.

You need to start thinking like the socialists running this country. Ordinary Americans wouldn’t be treated for the reasons you state but she clearly is enough of a party activist that she’s able to get access to the President. That will give her access to the special hospitals set up for loyalists to the dictator in power. Think of it as this illegal regime’s “friends and family” health plan.

America is better than this. We deserve better than this.

reaganaut on July 2, 2009 at 8:24 AM

America is a great country. But all it takes is one generation to turn its back on American values, and America will be gone. We’re close to that now, so we have a lot of work to do.

2010. Let’s bring America home again.

I agree with the sentiment, but hope they don’t use the slogan. Slogans are phony. And we’ve had about as much phony as the country can stand. I’d suggest something a little more down-to-earth, such as Socialism or Capitalism–You Decide.

Obama told her he would have the White House look into her problem.

Should not the rest of the critically ill within the population expect the same consideration from the White House? The WH phone lines should be burning up today.

We can have a slogan contest.

Give me Liberty, or give me Death!

Loxodonta on July 2, 2009 at 10:19 AM

This format doesn’t work with anyone. It didn’t work for Hillary. It didn’t work for the debates between McCain and Obama.

And it’s not working for Obama on healthcare.
