New GOP ad: The stimulus isn’t working

From Boehner’s office, an odd, hokey first effort at pushing a meme that could deliver the House to the GOP if it’s still true next November. There’s too much in the way here to focus on the message — split-screen, soundtrack, cornpone narrator, barking dogs — but they’ll get the tone right eventually. They’ve got plenty of time: Even Team Barry knows that things are going to get worse before they get better.

But the trend Thursday’s numbers represent should concern Democrats. While many analysts believe the economy will start growing again as early as the end of this year, average Americans will still feel they’re suffering through a deep recession well after growth rebounds – in part because unemployment lags behind recovery.

In the 1982 congressional elections, when unemployment was lingering in double digits, voters punished Republicans – despite President Ronald Reagan’s popularity – and the GOP lost 26 seats in the House.

And even if a recovery begins this year, it won’t arrive with booming stock markets, zooming home prices and spectacular job creation…

Republican pollster David Winston said his surveys and others show that the public is beginning to doubt Obama’s ability to save the economy – a trend that emerged last month after unemployment rate hit 9.4 percent.

“That was a shock to the American public,” he said. The impact can be seen in lower poll numbers on Obama’s handling of the economy and job approval, among others, Winston said.

Free advice to Boehner and the GOP: Make the new graph at Karl Rove’s website a centerpiece of the next ad, along with the now-famous Heritage deficit and Innocent Bystanders unemployment graphs. And by all means, put Obama’s moronic “created or saved” spin to the good comic use it deserves. There must be some funny people inside the GOP brain trust. If Ed hadn’t beat me to the punch in blogging the new unemployment numbers this morning, I would have titled the post, “Every job in America created or saved in June except for 467,000.” Take the baton and run with it, boys.

Hell, all we heard from the MSM and Bambi was a relentless barrage of negativity and how the economy was on a par with the great depression.

Reap what ye sow, assholes.

Obviously, you lips, tongue and teeth coordination are better than mine. Yuck!

I was immediately reminded of The Bear in the Woods’ letter to Hugh Hewitt.

More of the same crap. This is a “National Party”? Steele ran an excellent campaign. When the hell is he going to hire someone with some creative passion and savvy?

Banjos and hound dogs? Are you f’g kidding?

These guys have a compulsion to lose!

“Elly May” the hound dog has more courage, integrity and intelligence than most GOP officials.

I prefer a commercial with a hound dog than one with the GOP leader “rappin’”

I agree that the charts are much more devastating and easy to understand.

But more importantly did it not occur to anyone in the GOP that Hounds pursuing the policies of the first black president might not be the wisest motif to use?

Can’t anyone play this game?

Hey, after ObamaCare,ObamaEconomy, that visual might be inviting to a LOT of people.

In reality, the next commercial should be with Black Lab puppies. Everyone loves a Lab.

Now wait..will someone read something into the lab puppies being Black?

Jeff from WI on July 3, 2009 at 10:15 AM

Remember the Trent Lott stuff, you really don’t think the MSM is going to jump on it? Wait till after the weekend and see what happens.

It would have been much smarter to have a Sherlock Holmes motif and have the last guy’s job be the one discovered.

The merits of the arguments are not going to matter it will give an opening for distraction.

No, they just have a compulsion to avoid conflict.

Love that hound…true redneck:)

I’m down with the ad and Boehner JR Ewing as well.

You can’t tell me they’re not at least brothers.

Nothing wrong with this ad. If nothing else it makes people look around and wonder… where the jobs are from the stimulus?

iceman1960 on July 3, 2009 at 1:56 PM

Damnit Boner. I liked you when you attacked the Cap and Tax bill but this commercial is all wrong

their are no stimulus jobs yet because next to no money has been spent for it

karasoth on July 3, 2009 at 2:09 PM

What we need from the GOP is some clarification. Now, at long last, that they’re starting to show an inkling of concern over “jobs”, we need to know if they’re speaking of jobs for U.S. citizen or illegal aliens? We know the GOP has a history of preference towards the latter. Darvin Dowdy

I’m glad they’re going after the failure of this Administration to even address our economic problems — rather than pursue an ideological agenda — but they need to turn the corn-pone meter down a couple of notches.

Better make ‘em a Golden Retriever… wearing Ol’ Glory…

I just got an email from the NRCC linking to this video on “What Freedom Means”.

I get it. One talking heads vid for black, asian, latina and middle eastern(?) immigrants and one for The Base with banjos and hound dogs.

Brilliant!

rcl on July 3, 2009 at 3:31 PM

Could they have found time for one stinkin’ stat to back up their claim, or that famous graph?

tommylotto on July 3, 2009 at 3:57 PM

I thought it was cute!!
Can we PLEASE get Sarah to do these informals?? She’s a much better spokeperson for Conservatives!!!!

mmcnamer1 on July 3, 2009 at 11:47 PM

It’s no secret the Stimulus isn’t working. It’s also no secret that the Ayatollah’s in the GOP have lost the guts to change anything.

Ask yourself this – would a truely CONSERVATIVE Republican Party – in touch with it’s grassroots – attack Sarah Palin the way this one has?

Nope.

The GOP can recite facts all they want – they can point and say we’re crashing into the rocks – and it’s all true. But the GOP no longer has the intestinal fortitude to keep us off those rocks. Cowards do not deserve power – not that the Democrats do either – but … I’m simply tired of making choices between the lesser of two evils.

Maybe would just all grab our MRE’s and pistols, pop some popcorn – and watch the ship hit the rocks huh?

Maybe it all needs to come down and be rebuilt by people who have testosterone and guts.

FIRE THE AYATOLLAHS!

HondaV65 on July 4, 2009 at 1:52 AM

The GOP has turned into the most lame, ineffectual bunch of gas-bags in the sidereal universe. I am not going to give one friggin dime to them. Nor will I donate any time. I don’t even know who they represent. Not me.

The couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag. Michelle Malkin is the only one with an ounce of determination and brains. Ed and Allah give off the old RNC beltway vibe. WTF. We are screwed.

mmcnamer1 on July 3, 2009 at 11:47 PM Aside from the lookout who questioned the use of a bloodhound to find the trail of our first black President, you have got it better than anyone.

Yes, ask Governor Palin to ride her bike down the trail with the same sound track played when Ben Hur was on that Roman galleon or music of mounting suspense.

And the visual..I have seen the photos of that mother of five in her biking outfit. Have her on a long trail, getting tired. The American public is tired. And they know it (Heck, President Bush had them worn out). I would ask for sweat but that is probably too much.

BTW, I think that the Repubs in Congress are doing great with all things considered.

IlikedAUH2O on July 5, 2009 at 7:01 AM

BTW, I think that the Repubs in Congress are doing great with all things considered.

It’s easy to look tough when you know you’re accomplishing nothing. Face it, all their dramatic gestures have no more effect than a yapping chihuahua does on a rottweiler.

These are 98% the same guys who stunk the place up for 6 years when their votes meant something. There’s a third of them who are probably honorable but as a party they’ve proven themselves to be big spending liars when in charge.

There needs to be blood on the floor before I believe the GOP is anything other than Democrat Lite.
