Jim Jones to US commanders in Afghanistan: WTF?

posted at 11:34 am on July 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

During the presidential campaign, Barack Obama repeatedly accused the Bush administration of allowing the US to get distracted from the real war on terror in Afghanistan and Pakistan by getting bogged down in Iraq.  Attempting to shed an image of an anti-war zealot, Obama insisted that he would put many more troops into the Af-Pak theater and fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban with robust numbers of American and NATO troops.  When he first took office, he added 21,000 troops to the theater, but got no support at all from his new friends in Europe.

Now it appears that we have reached another Obama expiration date, punctuated by a Whiskey Tango Foxtrot from National Security Adviser Jim Jones to the commander of the Marines Obama sent to Afghanistan (via Jules Crittenden):

Now suppose you’re the president, Jones told them, and the requests come into the White House for yet more force. How do you think Obama might look at this? Jones asked, casting his eyes around the colonels. How do you think he might feel?

Jones let the question hang in the air-conditioned, fluorescent-lighted room. Nicholson and the colonels said nothing.

Well, Jones went on, after all those additional troops, 17,000 plus 4,000 more, if there were new requests for force now, the president would quite likely have “a Whiskey Tango Foxtrot moment.” Everyone in the room caught the phonetic reference to WTF — which in the military and elsewhere means “What the [expletive]?”

Nicholson and his colonels — all or nearly all veterans of Iraq — seemed to blanch at the unambiguous message that this might be all the troops they were going to get.

In other words, don’t expect any more help if you run into trouble.  What a great message to send the Marines as they begin their biggest operation in Afghanistan:

Thousands of U.S. Marines descended upon the volatile Helmand River valley in helicopters and armored convoys early Thursday, mounting an operation that represents the first large-scale test of the U.S. military’s new counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan.

The operation will involve about 4,000 troops from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, which was dispatched to Afghanistan this year by President Obama to combat a growing Taliban insurgency in Helmand and other southern provinces. The Marines, along with an Army brigade that is scheduled to arrive later this summer, plan to push into pockets of the country where NATO forces have not had a presence. In many of those areas, the Taliban has evicted local police and government officials and taken power.

Once Marine units arrive in their designated towns and villages, they have been instructed to build and live in small outposts among the local population. The brigade’s commander, Brig. Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, said his Marines will focus their efforts on protecting civilians from the Taliban and on restoring Afghan government services, instead of mounting a series of hunt-and-kill missions against the insurgents.

No one doubts that the NATO effort has to include a vast modernization of Afghanistan in order to succeed.  The country has just one modern highway.  Even if Afghanistan had a modern armed security force, which it is slowly building, it has no way to get around the country reliably in winter.  Farmers cannot rely on summer crops to last them through the winter, thanks to a lack of electricity and refrigeration.  Opium allows them to store their harvest and sell it year-round to survive the harsh winters.   The Taliban uses that to build loan-sharking services that enslave the farmers and their families.

But before we can build a modern Afghanistan, we have to ensure security throughout the country.  That may take more than the 21,000 extra troops we sent.  At the very least, a wise CinC would not rule out that possibility, especially one that promised a more energetic fight against the radical Islamists that live in the Af-Pak region.  It will take a long time to succeed in Afghanistan on a military and economic basis, and 21,000 was not a magic number for success.  It was just a good start in refocusing our effort.

Besides, telling the new troops that no one has their back on the eve of a major offensive is just plain stupid in terms of morale.  More than a few Marines must have a few Whiskey Tango Foxtrots of their own at the moment.

See, even that is a bogus answer and I have great respect for Mullen. There is a limit because the troops can only go so far and they have been at a high operational tempo since 2002. Politically, there is also a limit as to how engaged the US will go into these operations both from public support at home and from how much presence the host countries will tolerate.

The important thing is you do not muster your leaders in combat and inform them that the President has decided they are adequately staffed for the job.

There is some quality b*tching going on here.

But what real things have been done? How do we donate money and time to a real movement that will displace these anti-American mtfs? Can we do it before cap n’ tax destroys the economy? How about before socialized medicine destroys healthcare (except for the Fed’s–they get their own high-quality care)? Or before we borrow another 5 trillion and buy it back from ourselves?

Who are willing to be the leaders? Particularly knowing that the Chavez-style tactics of the Democrats will target them for elimination right away (with the active assistance of the government media).

Just askin’. I have to go to work everyday to keep my little company afloat, pay my bills, support my family, and generally avoid becoming another statistic for Obama’s economy. Not a political leader nor someone able to craft a message like the old Contract with America, that toppled 40 years of Democrat corruption. Where are these people to lead us?

Yesterday Fox played some footage of a commander in Iraq saying that yes they were pulling out, BUT what got my attention was what he said next. He had a peculiar look on his face to me, and he leaned forward toward the mic. He said very firmly, yes we are happy to finish our job here, but “these Marines want to go to Afghanistan.”

Not that the Marines would not want to do their duty, but after time in Iraq one would think a typical response would have been the Marines are pleased with their success here in Iraq, and they are looking forward to seeing their families, and then moving on to their next assignment. But this man made it clear his Marines did not want to pack up and go home; no instead they want to jump on a plane and be deposited in Afghanistan. THEY want to have the backs of those who need them. Now the overt moves made during this interview makes sense.

I don’t believe in hell, but I hope it exists and this administration deserves to burn in it forever.

Our present CIC and his administration are not fit to shine the shoes of our brave men and women serving our country.
Hawkdriver, may Go protect you, your squad, and all of our fighting men and women. We look forward to seeing you around here again soon.

George Bush to the troops: “Whatever you need to WIN”

Obama to the troops: “WTF?”

I sense a difference.

jake-the-goose on July 2, 2009 at 11:38 AM

that says it all; well done.

How is morale with the troops in A’stan, anyone?
What do the recruitment and reenlistment stats look like for 09?

Troop-rationing.

If I hear a Democrat whine that they are just as patriotic as a Republican, I swear I’ll kick them in the teeth.

You’re aiming too high. :-)

tims472 on July 2, 2009 at 12:04 PM

LOL..Well..I could NEVER hit ANY woman, so it would be a DEM guy which would mean he has nothing down there.

Jeff from WI on July 2, 2009 at 12:12 PM

I wouldn’t hire Obama to cut my fn grass.

TheSitRep on July 2, 2009 at 12:12 PM

When will these people learn? Just read a little bit of military history, and you see that micromanaging the military = BAD. Why do civilians think they know how to fight wars better than the military? Too much DOD civilian interference was, IMO, the main reason why Vietnam turned into such a mess…McNamara and the other “Wiz Kids” at the Defense Department thought they knew how to run the war better than Westmoreland, and wouldn’t give him what he needed to win. Also, Hitler’s interference contributed to Germany’s losses, whereas FDR and Churchill sat back and let the military run things. Grrrr.

This country is in big trouble… it’s just a shame that so many people are obsessing over Jon & Kate or the death of a talented but troubled freak to have a clue as to what’s really going on.

D2Boston on July 2, 2009 at 12:13 PM

OK, here’s how it’s going to go down.

Active military personell, veterans of all foreign wars, families of military personnel and veterans, friends of military personell and veterans (that should add up to 10-20 million people), you know what to do when you step into the voting booth come November 2010.

If ACORN nutjobs give you any grief, swat them away like the pesky little flies they are.

By the time Obama has finished what he has started you not only will believe in he11, you will be thanking Jesus Christ that it exists to house Obama and company.

Point taken. I stand corrected.

tims472 on July 2, 2009 at 12:15 PM

Because it would be better for him to lie to our troops with regard to what they can expect for the Obamanation that makes desolate?

doriangrey on July 2, 2009 at 12:06 PM

I want Obama held responsible for this. So, I want him to fire the perp. If Obama doesn’t fire Jim Jones for use of such language, then he proves your point, it’s not just us screaming, and it’s another hammer with which to hit Obama.

This story must get as much media and internet legs as possible. It must not be spiked or buried or rationalized away.

Obama trying to be slick when he sent 21,000 troops as a way of manipulating the American people in thinking that he is doing all he can to fight terrorist and now he is leaving them hanging. Makes me sick.
