Did Sotomayor help smear Bork?

Republicans have questioned how hard they should fight against Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. After all, they have objected the loudest to the dirty tactics unleashed by Democrats in their successful blocking of Robert Bork and their smearing of Clarence Thomas. Now, however, the AP reports that the group that Sotomayor helped lead took sides in the political battle against Bork that kept him off the bench in 1987:
A Puerto Rican civil rights organization advised by Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor campaigned against seating conservative Robert Bork on the high court in the late 1980s, according to new documents that shed light on the group that’s become a key focus of Republicans questioning Sotomayor’s fitness to be a justice.
The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund officially opposed Bork, whose nomination by President Ronald Reagan was rejected by the Senate in 1987, “because of the threat he poses to the civil rights of the Latino community,” its president reported in one of several documents from the group that the Senate Judiciary Committee released Wednesday.
Does this change the ground rules for Sotomayor’s confirmation hearing? After all, apart from the beating Thomas took from Howard Metzenbaum, Ted Kennedy, and Joe Biden, the Democrats, the Bork hearing created the poisonous environment that exists to this day on judicial nominations. If Sotomayor took part in that effort, she’s a political figure — much more so than Bork at the time, and therefore fair game.
Michael Barone looks at how the Ricci reversal also changes the game in the hearings:
Ricci is also something else: a riveting lesson in political sociology, thanks to the concurring opinion by Justice Samuel Alito. It shows how a combination of vote-hungry politicians and local political agitators — you might call them community organizers — worked with the approval of elite legal professionals like Sotomayor to employ racial quotas and preferences in defiance of the words of the Civil Rights Act. …
This is the sort of thing Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg described in the text as just the workings of politics. Writing in Slate, Yale Law faculty member Emily Bazelon goes further. She laments that the promotion test rewarded memorization and that it favored “‘fire buffs’ — guys who read fire suppression manuals on their down time.”
She is outraged that a fire department might want to promote firefighters who know more about suppressing fires, rescuing victims and protecting their colleagues rather than simply promote a predetermined number of members of specific racial groups whose self-appointed political spokesmen back the politicians in office.
Bazelon and Sotomayor, who voted to uphold the city’s decertification of the promotion test, are typical of liberal elites who are ready to ratify squalid political deals — and blatant racial discrimination — in return for the political support and the votes that can be rallied by the likes of Kimber. You supply the numbers on Election Day, and we’ll supply the verbiage to put a pretty label on your shenanigans.
None of this will keep Sotomayor off the court, especially since the Democrats support this kind of politicking and see nothing wrong with it. Most Americans, though, will view it with disgust, a rejection of the color-blind society we’d all like to see. The more this gets exposed, the more Sotomayor will look like an extremist political hack — and so will the man who appointed her.

Let’s see…who pulls ‘em in at the box-office? Johnny Depp? Or Henry Waxman?
And when’s the last time we saw Barney Frank modeling underwear for Calvin Klein?

The term “borking” resulted from the actions of the Democrats to destroy Robert Bork’s nomination. For Republicans to say that we must not do the same to a Dem nominee shows the total pussification of the party. If you refuse to use the weapons of the other side, when you have no weapons of your own, you deserve to lose. And don’t talk to me about the power of “truth”. Truth only has power when it has a voice. Right now that voice is barely audible.

I see in the H/A headlines something about bloggers on the right should rise above the tactics regurlarly employed by those on the left,F%@king nonsense!
This has been stance for too long, for the most part since the Bork nomination and continued through the speakership of Gingrich. There is a residual effect to such tar & feathering that dooms any aspiration of Gingrich to this day, ergo; therefore effective.
Any and all embarassment possible of democrats, or those politically asssociated with them must be employed with prejudice!
With the Obanable Snowman at the helm, the stakes are just too high for any semblance the Marquisse of Queensbury rules. The only conceivable policy open is that of scorched earth!
If you feel such machinations beneath you and leave a bad taste in your mouth, harken back to to Truman mindset that he used to justify the atomic bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki. The price to America of any lesser strategy is just too costly to contemplate!
The barbarians are at the gate people and it is time to take the gloves off!

One person’s witchhunt is another person’s due diligence.
I want due diligence. I love due diligence. Hopefully, Sotomayor has a jilted boyfriend somewhere back in history, so we can get the obligatory personal angle as a sex discrimination allegation.

Yep. A fox. But remember, you have to call her 3 times to get a date.
guntotinglibertarian on July 2, 2009 at 2:34 PM
What do you suppose are the chances of Soto having a jilted boy friend in her past? The chances of having been jilted seem the greater. But, for an older guy looking for a meal ticket who doesn’t mind the occasionaly grovel, she’s a good bet.
jeanie on July 2, 2009 at 2:34 PM
Bill Clinton was ideal. Fiscally conservative. Socially liberal.
I still absolutely adore him.
Sorry, that’s the truth. I’m a HUGE Clinton fan.
I figure we all get one president in a lifetime who really meets all qualifications.
Clinton was mine.
Obama? Nah* He strikes me as a mixture of Tax and Spend type with Carter thrown into the mix.
He’s just not my cuppa tea.
AnninCA on July 2, 2009 at 2:35 PM
“Bill Clinton was ideal. Fiscally conservative. Socially liberal”—–and sexually promiscuous. To each their own Ann.
jeanie on July 2, 2009 at 2:39 PM
Bill Clinton was reined in by a Republican Congress for much of his presidency. Had he had the same Congress Obama has, he would have been much more liberal.
I find it interesting that you are upset, in typical feminist umbrage, that people are talking about Sotomayor’s appearance , yet still adore a serial abuser of women like Clinton. Kind of ruins your credibility with me.

If it’s good enough for the goose, it’s good enough for the gander.
No free passes. Use past Democrap comments against them. I.E. BO, Schumer, Kennedy etc. There is a wealth of material for the R’s to use.
VikingGoneWild on July 2, 2009 at 2:58 PM
Good to see you’re bonding. *haha
Seriously, don’t waste the bandwidth on this type of remark.
I don’t care what you think.
AnninCA on July 2, 2009 at 2:58 PM
AnninCA, one usually posts when they think they have a valid point to add to the discussion. Your actions belie your claim.
Jvette on July 2, 2009 at 3:00 PM
On some issues? Absolutely. We’d not still be talking about DADT without that shift.
On fiscal issues? No, but then I was raised in Arkansas, he was the governor, and I know he “got” budget restraints and how to turn around the Dem reputation from “tax and spend.”
I think O is blowing it. But he’s not blowing it alone. It’s the insiders. They HATED that aspect of Bill’s presidency.
They rejected Hillary due to that. She, too, would have been quite different from Obama on this.
The Clintons “got” fiscal conservatives. They were absolutely trained in a poor state, and they looked for ways to accomplish goals without going into huge deficits.
He was great on that.
AnninCA on July 2, 2009 at 3:02 PM
Ah well, hate to blast and run, but real life calls.

Monica on July 2, 2009 at 3:08 PM
Yeah, I was raised in AR also.
I seem to recall Frank White in between Clinton’s two terms.
Arkansas is a funny state. I don’t believe most Arkansans know what they want. Then or now.
Lanceman on July 2, 2009 at 3:10 PM
You might want to ask Dick Morris about that.
Clinton…and especially Hillary…are socialists with an opportunistic twist. They were simply restrained by a Republican Congress and so, they made lemonade.
Remember, he vetoed welfare reform twice…only acquiescing when the poll numbers clearly showed his re-election hung in the balance.
Meantime, you still haven’t explained how a feminist like yourself can breezily ignore the abuse of Paul and the rape of Jaunita Broaddrick.
All that being said, Ann, you’re not a bad sort of a Lib.
And as much as it pains me to say it, I’d a thousand times rather have a Clinton in the WH than Obammy.
guntotinglibertarian on July 2, 2009 at 3:11 PM

guntotinglibertarian on July 2, 2009 at 3:12 PM
Where? Camden, here.
It’s a terribly poor state, but the Clintons really did a lot of good.
I’ve just been huge fans since I was young.
I think it was probably one of those unique deals, where a liberal was “schooled” in a poor state.
That produced a Democratic president who understood that you can be liberal without growing government.

I’ll stick to my principles and not take the pat on the head seriously. No resentment when you blast me later on some issue or another.
(But, this was rather nice. OK, maybe I’m not quite so immune as I thought! LOL*)
AnninCA on July 2, 2009 at 3:16 PM
Hey Lance, remember why Clinton lost that term?
Car taxes. Same as Grey Davis in CA. *haha
I found that sort of a funny connection.
Man, people pay attention to their car registration fees, eh?
AnninCA on July 2, 2009 at 3:18 PM
That statement goes to the heart of your confusion, Ann.
We’re not supposed to be “fans” of politicians. They aren’t rock stars…they’re…employees of the people; public servants.
Eva Peron had fans. Adolf Hitler had fans. Uncle Joe Stalin had fans. Jim Jones had fans.
Americans have..or used to have…government of, by and for the people.
guntotinglibertarian on July 2, 2009 at 3:20 PM
Had Hillary’s nightmarish healthcare plan passed, government would have grown substantially. That had nothing to do with Bill and everything to do with the Republican congress. You can thank Newt and the Contract with America for the smaller government push.
Monica on July 2, 2009 at 3:21 PM
Monica vs AnninCa. Perfect demonstration of a conservative woman armed with simple facts and a liberal woman who operates out of blissful ignorance and “feelings”
Love ya, Monica.

Oh, and remember how everyone counted him out, too, because he totally blew the DNC speech? He waxed on and on.
I saw him in the very first debate in Connecticutt and announced to my very skeptical family…..he’ll win.
No wonder he relates to Sarah Palin. He “gets” her and her appeal in a very, very big way.

Ann, you and Bill Jeff really need to get a room.

You’re silly. Bush won reelection due to emotions.
Emotions are always a part of politics.

Arkansas is a small state. One day, I will share a story about just how small. :)
AnninCA on July 2, 2009 at 3:26 PM
Bush won re-election due to a continuing terrorist threat. Voters knew they couldn’t trust Dems with national security. Period.
Believe me, even the Republican base had no great love (feelings, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, feelings…) for Bush. We just had those pesky memories of people jumping out of burning towers and somehow didn’t trust the Dems to take things quite seriously enough.

Gross.
Monica on July 2, 2009 at 3:31 PM
Best trot on down to your local gun store before it’s too late, Monica. Time’s a-wastin’…and the cost of ammunition goes up daily.
I suggest a nice SigSauer 380. Compact, light, concealable. Doesn’t make a lot of fuss. And then invest in a few gun-handling courses. Don’t know if you’re married or what, but it’s always appealing when you can out-shoot your manfriends.
guntotinglibertarian on July 2, 2009 at 3:32 PM
I know- I’m a professional procrastinator. I’ve been waiting for my husband to go with me. It’s a bit overwhelming. We’ve vowed to take private instruction when we buy. So little time… I’ve never handled more than a BB gun and that was shooting near birds and squirrels in my veggie garden. I just wanted to scare them. Damn watchcats are worthless.

EXACTLY! That’s why the Mark Tapscott rejoinder article was such a pantywaist effort. Whining “Be nice, now” gets NOTHING from the leftists. They want us dead and gone, burned to the ground and disintegrated with lye.
But hey, they might call us “mean and selfish” if we earn just enough to pay debts, less than last year so revenue receipts decline and useless programs wither and die. Just call me “Grinch!”
They might just go apoplectic if we started bashing them all the Chicago way: escalate, escalate, escalate!
ExpressoBold on July 2, 2009 at 5:55 PM
Never bring a knife to a gun fight. Democrats gave birth to using any means necessary to derail opposition appointments.
Let’s see if the Dem’s can take it as good as they dish it out.
Nothing is out of bounds.

I just hope Polaroids surface with Sotomayor in bed with either a dead man or a live girl, as that is probably the only thing that would keep her off the court.
On second thought, these are dims we are talking about.
