Scheuer to Beck: The only chance of saving America is … another Al Qaeda attack

An instant GB classic, from Beck’s apocalyptic fretting about massive civil unrest which he prays will be peaceful to Scheuer’s warning that concerns about cross-border gun dealing are a pretext to repealing the Second Amendment to the grand finale crowning Osama Bin Laden as America’s unwitting savior. What’s striking about this clip is how closely it tracks some of the key tropes of nutroots paranoia during the Bush years. Now as then, it’s assumed that the greatest threat to the country is its own government. Now as then, the “solution” to getting the nation back on the right track involves some ghoulish catastrophic failure of national security (losing the Iraq war in Bush’s case, failing to prevent a new attack in this one). And now as then, because the president acted in a legally controversial way in one circumstance — Bush on “torture,” Obama on corporate takeovers — he’s instantly suspected of ruthless designs on the Constitution itself, irrespective of whether he actually has the support he’d need to change it. (If you think Blue Dog Democrats are going to vote for a massive gun grab, you’re kidding yourself.) The only major difference between then and now is that the nutroots indictment was limited to Republicans whereas Beck and Scheuer keep it bipartisan. Thank heaven for small favors, I guess.

It may seem alarmist, but a wakeup call is needed. It’s too bad that for most of the elites, in fact, all of them, one 9/11 wasn’t enough to change how they think.

It sounds terrible, and it would be completely horrible, but it is going to take America on it’s knees to wake people up.
If this is what it’s going to take,I pray for another way. I just don’t see it.

Worst case scenario in the Bush accusation is that he’s a sadist. The accusation against Obama is that he’s a megalomaniac. The latter would be a much greater threat to America and the world.

let’s not forget that Beck told his broker to sell all his stocks back in 07 and got rid of all the other stuff before the September meltdown earlier in 08. So is he really insane or does he have an insanely far out into the horizon foreshadow instinct?

Unfortunately he’s spot on yet even if we are attacked again there are still many pacifist thumb sucking liberals that will somehow spin it to be the fault of the US.
One would think 9-11 would be enough to convince even the most staunch liberal of the dangers we face from fascist Islam, yet they (especially the Obamabots) think the whole GWOT was a red-herring devised by the evil Boooosh to scare the people into voting only for the GOP and/or as an excuse to go to war so the military industrial complex can make more money!
It’s obvious the left and our far left government under Obambi have a pre-9-11 mentality and this delusion they are suffering from is unfortunately going to get many innocent Americans killed and even after yet another tragedy befalls us there will still be those that continue to stick their heads in the sand!

People are just not as pissed as I am. It does keep me awake at night, because I do not know what to do to fight this president and Congress. I do not know how to protect myself and my family. Yep, that moral equivalence argument gets me every time.
Except in the Bush case, he wasn’t going to do any of it. While with Obama, one has to wonder.
The most likely scenario is The Obama is nothing more than a gangster thug who is in it for the money. The next most likely scenario is The Obama really is a Marxist ideologue and he is in it for the power (for life).

Many years ago, there was a Masterpiece Theater series that aired on PBS called “Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years.” It starred Robert Hardy as Churchill. Then I read William Manchester’s biographies of Churchill, and the PBS series was spot-on.
Today we consider Winston Churchill one of the greatest statesmen of the 20th century, if not all time.
In the 1930s, Churchill warned incessantly that Hitler was re-arming and had plans to conquer Europe. People called him a wacko, conspiracy theorist nutjob, too.

Difference between Beck and the nutroots is that he’s actually talking about things that matter, like the border and the economy. And let’s face it, the Patriot Act and FISA were things to be concerned about even under Bush.
Think what you want about Beck, but the man is on the pulse of something. Disregard (if you can) exactly what Scheuer said, and look at what the underlying threat is. There is a HUGE disconnect between those in power and those in the base. It’s been going on for quite sometime. Scheuer is correct in that it’s going to take something huge to shake the American public and if that happens it will not be pretty, because at that point all trust is gone. My bet is that it will be the economy, but my second guess would be the border.

You can’t just say, “No, he was actually right, because notwithstanding the part that demonstrably was false he was right and you just don’t know it yet.” I mean you can, but… seriously?
DaveS on July 1, 2009 at 6:47 PM
The government, especially this government is the greatest threat to the country.
A nation can survive attacks from outside, very rarely will a nation survive a successful attack from within. We’ve been under attack from within for decades. Each battle sharpens the delineation between left and right. Today, the left roots against America while the right fights for her.
Now it seems, this current battle will determine the winner and loser of the war.

hate to be the glass half empty type, but even if there was another attack, it would change nothing.
People are too American Idol’ed. They want to be obsessed with the trivial and childish.

what is it that hot air readers find so wrong with beck? I mean, do you disagree with what he just said? You think our government cares about the border? I 100% agree with them that the gov will use the Mexican violence as a excuse to take guns away, or make gun license so expensive you can not afford them.Or just make Bullets 4x the cost they were 1 year ago…. and basically not enough supply to meet demand… bullets that is.
But, seriously; Nobody in this government, Republican or Democrat is going to close this border until a terrorist attack comes. Its sad but true, but the southern border is a place without laws, and if we cant track the 10 million Mexicans coming across every year, we def can not track the 5 man Muslim cell coming over to kill Americans. And yes, Donut is in favor of building the GREAT WALL OF MEXICO

Hyperbole….but apparently necessary since most either are not paying attention or are part and parcel to the problem.
Yes, it will take a major “event” of some large nature to shock most of America out of its Huxleyian Brave New World Soma-induced state that most appear to be under.
When Michael Jackson dominates the news cycle for four days solid and thousands of freedom seeking people across Iran are being arrested and hanged…and we don’t care to notice, or when a nearby government is being forced to accept an illegal president under threat (backed by the United States) of a “military option” then, yes…pass out the Soma…we can all go to our own happy place…the real world be damned.
Problem is, most pundits, news correspondents, and reporters and talking heads focus on the sound bites…and ignore the reality and the facts….just like here at HotAir and across the blogosphere and into our own national security policy establishment….still calling Zelaya’s ouster a “coup” when it fact it was the polar opposite of a coup…it was an act of preservation of an established and legal form of government, under law.
So…while not wishing for another AQ attack, and they did come close a few times since 9-11, it’ll take something far bigger than Michael Jackson’s death to garner the rapt attention of our wonderfully educated America to real problems, real threats, and real dangers, both foreign and domestic.

Brilliantly, Beck cuts him off and says,
Well played, Glenn.

Scheuer is a nut, but he’s just talking about how much of a threat our own government has become to us. That’s not too tough to understand.
But he’s wrong about an attack. That will only further entrench the America-hating junta now controlling Washington, since they will institute martial law and it’s all gone from there – at least with respect to regaining control of the federal government.

Yes. But at the end he said something to the effect “And that is exactly why Al Quaeda WON’T launch such an attack” basically saying they are not stupid and have no desire to awaken the sleeping dragon. They aren’t asking for an attack. The thing I like about Beck is, he brings in the people who ponder the unthinkable, who have the credentials to come up with the unthinkable and have you believe it’s possible and who are willing to say the unthinkable out loud.
It’s political correctness shutting down such conversations that have us here despearately trying to turn on the lights in people’s heads.
We need this. We need people willing to say this who know what they are talking about. I was watching last night on TiVo when I got home and I actually rolled it back to hear it again because it was really just a “Wow” kind of statement. But when I thought it through I realized, someone has to say it.

Obama could carry out a “massive gun grab” without a vote. All he has to do is start grabbing guns. Obama doesn’t have to change the Constitution if he just throws it in the trash.

I wasn’t born to walk on water
I wasn’t born to sack and slaughter
But on my soul, I wasn’t born
To stoop and knuckle under
A man can learn to steal some thunder
A man can learn to work some wonder
And when the gauntlet’s down,
It’s time to rise and climb the sky
And soon the moon will smolder
And the winds will drive
Yes, a man grows older but his soul remains alive
All those tremulous stars still glitter
And I will survive!
Let my heart grow colder and as bitter as a falcon in the dive
There was a dream, a dying ember
There was a dream, I don’t remember
But I will resurrect that dream
Though rivers stream and hills grow steeper
For here in hell where life gets cheaper
Oh, here in hell the blood runs deeper
And when the final duel is near
I’ll lift my spear and fly
Piercing into the sky and higher
And the strong will thrive
Yes, the weak will cower while the fittest will survive
If we wait for the darkest hour
Till we spring alive
Then with claws of fire, we will devour like a falcon in the dive

He is a nut about Israel. But, he doesn’t want us to let Israel defend itself. He wants Israel snuffed out. Part of this is because he doesn’t really understand the arab/persian/muslim world. He knows a lot of details about it (and he has a good amount of information in that respect) but he doesn’t understand it.
Oh, I agree 1000% with Scheuer on securing the border. No question about that. What Bush did with the border after 9/11 was criminal (in my mind), the amnesty bill was near-treasonous, and the “path to citizenship” for illegals was clear treason.
I do agree with Scheuer on a lot of things, but he gets really kooky here and there, and really doesn’t understand the cultural dynamics of the muslim world, though he knows the events and dates and groups quite well.

Beck can take it and it is funny – usually. Sometimes he steps over the line. You know Beck taunts Levin back every time he plays Link’n Park as his opening music. Levin has a valid point. Beck – knowingly or not – absorbs the genius of those around him and puts it into common terms. Much of what he talks about comes from others like Levin. He gives credit to most of his sources but never credits Levin – ever. We need Beck every bit as much as we need Levin.

AP – If our own government is not the greatest threat to this country – who do you believe to the the biggest threat to this country? Our government is doing a much better job at robbing Americans of their freedom than any other adversary we have faced or are currently facing.
While I don’t necessarily believe that another AQ strike is the only thing that can save America – I have long stated that this won’t be made better, it will have to break and then be rebuilt. Who could possibly fix this – the Republicans?! HA HA! Seriously. The only possible thing the Republicans are poised to do is disappear.

…Scheuer, like the Anti-American Leftist Democratic Traitor, Larry Johnson, is an incompetent boob, who was a failure as a CIA Agent, failed in his job to stop/find Bin Laden, and who became the darling of the Anti-American/Pro-Jihadi Democratic Traitor Left in this country, because he was “Anti-Bush”..
You see, in a normal world, when you’re incompetent, and you get fired, like Scheuer, Larry Johnson, Paul Pillar, you slink off in disgrace, keep your mouth shut, and just fade away.
But in America today, you become adopted by the Anti-American/Pro-Jihadi Traitor Democratic Left, and become an “expert”, a “talking head”, and an instant celebratory of the Anti-American/Pro-Jihadi MSM….

I mentioned earlier a series about Churchill; just checked and Netflix has it on DVD. Again, it’s called “Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years” starring Robert Hardy, made in 1983 for Masterpiece Theater. I suggest all of you who are making fun of people who are warning us of bad things to come, you might want to watch this. Those of you who love Churchill, might want to watch it, too. It’s based on Martin Gilbert’s biography and focuses on the years 1929-1939. They said he was a kook, but he was right.

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly. But the traitor moves among those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the galleys, heard in the very hall of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor—he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims, and wears their face and their garment, and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation—he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city—he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared.

Spouse and I were talking about this, and- I should say that I like both Glenn Beck and Orson Scott Card- but we were talking about the fact that there seems to be such a certainty and, dare I say, hopefulness about an apocalypse and/or civil war in the US in some of his shows. Then it dawned on me, because I had read Orson Scott Card’s Empire not long before, which envisions a US civil war along blue state-red state lines, that both are Mormons. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but an American apocalypse is a Mormon tenet of faith. A bit of religious ideology getting into the mix?

Since when is Scheuer a left wing hack?

I think it’s important to realize that Glenn and to some extent Scheuer are engaged in theater, not particularly analysis.

I think very few people have paid attention to what’s going on at our southern border. Most live in their own little world pretending everywhere in the US is the same. It’s NOT, the Mexican drug cartels are killing and kidnapping on OUR side of the border. They are not afraid of our law enforcement there, which is overworked for the area they patrol. Why aren’t we using ARMED Predators to patrol the border?

I just don’t understand how the US getting attacked is going to save us from cap and trade.

It’s just a good thing that Ron Paul wasn’t on there with some gold coins… The “hawkish libertarians” may have sh*t themselves…
