It ain’t what you know in DC, part II

Remember that last-minute, 300-page amendment to the cap-and-trade bill that hit the House just hours before the vote approving it?  The one that Democrats insisted on putting up for a vote before anyone had the chance to read it?  When one reads the contents of it, as the Washington Times’ Edward Felker did, it becomes apparent why Henry Waxman and Edward Markey pushed it through so quickly.  It was a payoff for Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) to turn her back on coal-producing Ohio and vote to kill the economy in her state, and she wasn’t alone:

When House Democratic leaders were rounding up votes Friday for the massive climate-change bill, they paid special attention to their colleagues from Ohio who remained stubbornly undecided.

They finally secured the vote of one Ohioan, veteran Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Toledo, the old-fashioned way. They gave her what she wanted – a new federal power authority, similar to Washington state’s Bonneville Power Administration, stocked with up to $3.5 billion in taxpayer money available for lending to renewable energy and economic development projects in Ohio and other Midwestern states.

House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry A. Waxman, California Democrat, included the Kaptur project in a 310-page amendment to the legislation unveiled at 3 a.m. Friday, just hours before the bill was to be debated on the House floor. The amendment was packed with other vote-getting provisions, both large and small, that had been sought by dozens of wavering Democrats.

How many of the Representatives who voted for this bill saw this boondoggle?  The House clerk could not produce a copy of the final version of the bill during the debate.  The amendment itself got published in the wee hours of Friday morning.  By the time the House came to order and began debate, it hadn’t yet been noted by the media.

In essence, Waxman and Markey bought Kaptur with our money. They spent $3.5 billion for a single vote in Congress, and Kaptur had willingly put herself up for sale.  Never mind that Ohio will get hard by caps on the use of coal.  Ohioans will lose jobs, their energy bills will skyrocket, and that will have an inflationary effect on all goods and services as the jobless rate escalates. Kaptur, at least, doesn’t mind that at all; she got her pet project, and it only cost the rest of us three times more than the Obama administration demanded cut from missile defense in 2010.

Democrats have to fight big regional resistance in the Senate to get cap-and-trade passed.  However, they have an advantage: they have no shame about spending our money to do it.  Get ready for more Midnight Amendments with pork by the billions in order to squeeze this sausage out of the Senate.

….it gets worse; down here in Atlanta this morning, on the Neal Boortz show, he read from the 1428page bill (including the admendment); how a provision had been put in, to pay “Green Manufacturers” for producing Energy Efficient Appliances; it’s going to cost a minimum of $600M for that part of the bill alone, and for every Energy Efficient Appliance these specially designated Manufactures “produce” (not Sell, mind you); but for every one they “produce”, they get paid, by the US Government, a fee of between $75 – $250 EACH; that’s in addition to the purchase price paid by the consumer for said Applicances!

Can you imagine!

Wonder who owns stock, or controlling interests, or investments, in those Manufacturers???

GarandFan on July 1, 2009 at 11:15 AM

The CEO of a nat. gas company was interviewed by Larry Kudlow yesterday or the day before. He claimed the coal producing states were bought by the Dems by not requiring coal companies to purchase carbon offsets for their emissions for ten years ( I think). But in order to make up the revenue, the natural gas producers will have to purchase the carbon offsets. The irony is that natural gas is much cleaner burning than coal, but he claims the obamites have now given a prefernce to coal burning plants over cleaner nat. gas.

I don’t beleive in any of this, so I say burn everything, drill everywhere, nukify the grid, etc. etc. F#&#&#& politicans!!!

Bishop on July 1, 2009 at 11:32 AM

This bill will drive up rents. It will be a deal breaker in home sales. This bill will hamper new construction. The big lies include energy savings. The energy savins come from calculating you will pay a lot more per energy unit but will use less units. If your windows are ok and insulation is ok. How will you save energy? It seems to be cheaper to bribe the ACORN trained building inspector than to actually do the work. A smart grid by the way can include energy rationing. They can read your meter by radio and can shut your electricity.

Hopefully someone tells me before the bulldozers arrive.

$3.5 billion in taxpayer money available for lending to renewable energy and economic development projects in Ohio and other Midwestern states.
.
Just a question for HA readers. What is the Gross Ohioan Product? Answer: $418,258,000,000.00
.
How much does the state of Ohio (aggregate) pay in federal income tax? Answer: $22,475,528,000.00
.
.
The Midwest > Ohio > Economy Stats

Gross State Product > $418,258,000,000.00
.
Personal income > $373,684,000,000.00
.
Total tax burden > $22,475,528,000.00
.
Total tax burden (per capita) $1,962.93
.
Employment 5,605,417
.
Unemployment 293,778
.
Unemployment rate 5%
.
Federal income tax $ 22,475,528,000.00
So now Ohio gets,, – $ 3,500,000,000.00 for Green energy funds
New fed tax reduction = $ 18,975,528,000.00
.

First time poster!

This is unfortunately my Representative. We have dealt with this nonsense since the early 80’s (with the exception of a more moderate abortion position – she is opposed to PBA’s). She has done positively nothing for the district in all those years, but manages to get re-elected based on name recognition and nary a worthy challenger (she was biennially challenged by a guy named Ed Emery for a long time, who by all indications was completely off his rocker). I truly believe that the NW Ohio Republican party never puts up a viable candidate because they just assume they will lose. Worse – If anyone is familiar with the Tom Noe campaign (coingate) scandal – it originated in NW Ohio, and left a distaste for Republicans statewide, resulting in a virtual Democrat landslide this past election. Fortunately, Ohioans usually learn their lesson after one go-around with them, and votes Republicans back in. Not so for NW Ohio though. Toledo, the hub of NW Ohio is a mess because of incompetent Democrats getting elected and re-elected despite driving the city into the toilet. It’s really sickening. This is a city that now cuts you a ticket for parking in your own driveway (I am not kidding).

Marcy is a classic case for congressional term limits.

I am currently starting a website with a local focus dedicated to unseating her, but it’s not ready yet. I figure any little bit helps!

You would think that if this was such a good idea and was not going to hurt people and that is was essential to the survival of the planet and all that stuff…that it would not be necessary to stoop to these tactics.

You would think…

I wonder what kind of payola the 8 traitorous republicans got for their vote. The congress truly believes that they own the money supply and they are free to dish it out in any quantity they choose.

I ask you, in all sincerity, what has anyone done to disabuse them of this notion?

Where’s the money coming from?
The people who make less then $250,000 per year, without a doubt. Fannie and Freddie will be in charge of “energy essential housing” (here we go again) and last but not least the corporations will get 85% of the “cap and trade” money. The poor get energy efficient housing for low cost, Corporations get 85% of the proposed money in cap and trade, the middle class pays for it all. Who didn’t see that coming?

Three cheers for awareness! Y’all had plenty of warning. Need to get your info from the proper sources. Who’s running things these days? Any idea? Stop talking and start listening!!!

Fist thing Republicans need to do when they get back in power is pass a law making it illegal to vote on a bill that has not been prepared a set time before it’s due to be voted on.

Either that or a law demanding that your representatives read each piece of legislation they vote on.

I can’t see them do the latter but one can dream.
