Blue on blue: Helen Thomas hammers Gibbs on Obama’s phony town hall

posted at 2:55 pm on July 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

Phony, that is, in the sense that the White House knows in advance the questions that’ll be asked, which makes the questioners de facto plants of the most transparent administration evah. I have no big problem with The One putting on a pageant — that’s standard presidential stagecraft in a television age — but I do have a problem with the NYT taking care to note the “orchestration” when Bush pulled this while neglecting to mention it this time. It’s in keeping with the media’s narratives about Dubya and Obama, though, the former shifty and stupid and therefore dependent on softballs, the latter “open” and ingenious and no longer required to prove his ability to handle tough questions. Also, and needless to say, while Thomas’s and Chip Reid’s effort is appreciated, O doesn’t need to shut out the press in order to “control” it. That’s what Rahm’s mad manipulation skillz are for, and what Rahm (and Axelrod) can’t control, old-fashioned liberal bias can be trusted to take care of. As lefty rag Vanity Fair admitted early last month:

They have been handed a most remarkable historical moment—in which they get to remake the media in their own image. They have the power and they are the subject. These people in this White House are in greater control of the media than any administration before them.

Frankly, with ABC holding infomercials for Obama in prime time, it seems almost petty to get exercised about a phony town hall. Exit question: How seriously should we take concerns that Obama’s not facing enough tough questions when voiced by a woman known to wonder why the White House considers Iran a threat? Why is Helen Thomas outraged since she’s been hoaring herself out to Democrats for the past century?

Good for her for getting fed up & calling these guys on it, credit where credit is due!

Gibbs is such a douchebag. He pretty much admits he, and likely Barry are incapable of answering unfiltered questions.

starting at 3:08:

Gibbs: “Uhhh..er..uh..we’ve had this discussion ad nauseum”
Thomas: “Of course you would [sic], because you don’t have any answers”
Gibbs: “Eh…uh…er…’cause I didn’t know you were going as a question, Helen”
Thomas: Well, you should have”

No kidding! Gibbb, you are having a press conference. And you are surprised reporters ask unfiltered questions? What a maroon! But, thanks for admitting you are incapable of answering questions.

And that smirk, bobbing of the head, and leaning over the podium…can he be more disrespectful? If I were Reed, when he leaned over the podium, I would have reached up, grabbed him by his collar and pulled over the podium, thrown him on the floor, and kicked the tar out of him like Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy (Joe Pesci) did to Billy Batts in “Goodfellas”

Investigative journalism along with a free press died decades ago. The current crop of interchangable mouthpieces that permiate the air and TV screens are a shadow on their predecessors.

The entire media today are a shallow, pale, utterly irrelevant front for spin and spam.

Do you remember in school when you had contempt for the kids who constantly sucked up to you? They were annoying, and inconsequential, and gained no respect or momentum with their drooling.

When are the slobbering, fawning and embarrassingly adoring media fools going to realize they are the suck-up kids and the person they are sucking up to looks at them with disdain, disrespect and condescending amusement?

Gibbs – what a f&#$ing tool! He’s an embarrassment to NC State alumni everywhere – I wish the school would rescind his diploma. I still say he was probably on the receiving end of many a swirly in grade school.

He was probably surprised that his turning the question around and back on Reid didn’t work, and then astonished that his “charm” didn’t work on Thomas. Boy, did she give him a look – talk about the Stink Eye.

Lurking Vet on July 1, 2009 at 5:42 PM

Gibbs went to college??!! Not exactly a ringing endorsement for higher education. Did he major in putz?

Jeff from WI on July 2, 2009 at 6:36 AM

Three Short Points:

Notice that the press is upset about something in their “process” — not about about the healthcare, economic and social process this administration is trying to foist on the rest of us.

Two, if you were his staff, would you want The One taking tough questions without a teleprompter? If that happened, even the motley, stupid crew that passes for the media might see a problem. I bet if you asked The One about the Monroe Doctrine he would think about JFK. Provided he knows that much…Go Harvard!

Finally, compare this skirmish to the total wars with Republican Presidents at least as far back as President Nixon. During the rule of that demon, one reporter remarked “We didn’t get a glove on him.” after a press conference.

IlikedAUH2O on July 2, 2009 at 6:42 AM

So how many people actually work for Omama regarding the media. He has one staff to write the question he’s to be asked, and hand those questions out to the media. Then another staff to write the answers to the questions he wants to be asked, and finally a staff to right the reactions to those answers and to tell the public he was so intelligent and wonderful and funny in his response.

Obamacare will not be passed by intelligent people asking intelligent and pointed questions. Obama has to create a faux crisis out of anecdotes about elderly people having to eat pet food to afford their medications, unemployed people with terminal illnesses they cannot afford treatment for, and similiar made-for-soap opera stories. What the filthy liar in the White House DOES NOT want to talk about is where the funding is coming from, if the numbers add up, why he continues to lie when he says that you will not be forced into his nannystate system, etc.

highhopes on July 2, 2009 at 7:55 AM

For some reason, I was thinking about this last night. It occurs to me that the filthy liar in the White House doesn’t have any of the charisma that GWB had, even at the nadir of his popularity. GWB would go into a room full of people who hated him (including Thomas)and he would joke with them and have a conversation. Even a blatantly partisan whore with no objectivity like David Gregory got the nickname “stretch.” Compare that to Obama whose response to a reporter making a reference to “Spock-like logic” was defensiveness that it was alluding to the filthy liar’s gi-normous ears.

Didn’t Obama tell Helen basically to shut-up not long ago? That probably has a lot to do with her turning on the White House at this point. I wonder if they do try to move her to the back which security person is gonna get the stuffing beat out of them by an old lady with a really big purse. Now that would be worth watching.

I just love how the Obama’s Town Hall meetings ALWAYS have a drama moment. First it was the homeless woman and now it’s the cancer lady.

Both times, Obama pulls them aside and says “They’re going to do something to help them”. I wonder whatever happened to the homeless lady?

I moved to New Orleans a year after Katrina. Ray Nagin was constantly being quoted as saying that the city had turned the corner on recovery. Well, two years later he was saying the same lie despite the fact that New Orleans is still a pretty damned dismal place to live.

The same thing applies here. The filthy liar in the White House will continue with the lie that he created jobs with this policies because it is impossible to prove or disprove. In the meantime, I’m hoping the soon to be announce double digit unemployment numbers will wake up the morons who voted for this bastard and mobilize the opposition to provide a Congress who acts as a check to the street thug in the White House instead of a rubber stamp.

highhopes on July 2, 2009 at 8:38 AM

Back in 1994, when Clinton was still doing the jogging PR stuff for the cameras while trying to pass Hillarycare, Helen yelled at him “Everything’s falling apart!” when she was being frozen out in the press room by Dee Dee Myers, a clip Rush Limbaugh delightedly played over and over.

Thomas probably thought she’d be back in her normal position once the evil George W. Bush left office, and is miffed that Obama seems to be treating her even worse. Mix that in with Helen’s status as one of the media people who thinks Obama’s not far left enough and you get a recipe for lashing out at Gibbs, even if it’s for all the wrong reasons.

jon1979 on July 2, 2009 at 8:44 AM

Incredible.

I have to say Gibbs does a lousy job responding to those questions. He simply laughs at their concerns. The evil nature of man responds to read questions by scoffing. He knows they have a point but he refuses to acknowledge it. It’s called denial.

When man is wrong and doesn’t want to admit it, he is capable of terrible things.

shick on July 2, 2009 at 8:46 AM

The simple fact is that Obama is incapable of the truth and the media has provided the cover for that deception. It is getting so utterly obvious that even the political lemmings in the MSM are being exposed as incompetent lapdogs.

volsense on July 2, 2009 at 9:11 AM

I’m having flashbacks, is this the “Wizard of Oz” revisited? Obama is nothing more than a little squeaky man producing loud, authoritarian noises through a powerful microphone . . . or in his case through the left wing media. His ploy has become so obvious that even the like of Helen Thomas can see it.

shick on July 2, 2009 at 8:46 AM

My personal opinion is, and this isn’t defending Gibbs poor performance, that Gibbs isn’t in the loop on the positions he has to go out and defend. Rahm Emanuel and the political strategy team is calling the shots and they don’t feed Gibbs anything but bland talking points.

It’s different than when Tony Snow was out there engaging with the press on thorny issues and challenging their questions with questions of his own- all the time admitting when he didn’t have an answer but he’d get back to them. Gibbs doesn’t have that kind of relationship with the White House Press Corps. He gets up there and reads prepared statements without elaboration and when asked for clarification he simply reads the talking point again. The teleprompter could do Gibbs job.

How can the Press claim that they defend our freedom when the President attends meetings and press conferences with advance knowledge of questions? Seems like a sham to me to go through the motions of the Press conference or a Town Hall Meeting. Just let him stand there alone and use his teleprompter to regale us with his answers. How can I be reassured that the President can think when he has the questions in advance? I suspect the the questions come in, he hands them over to an adviser, that adviser composes an answer and the President memorizes the answer. What distinquishes my President from an actor?

Is it possible Thomas had a moment of clarity, and realized that the media have been pawns of the left for years? A little late to make up for that now, isn’t it?

What’s sad is that if she’s the point person for the press’s demands for accountability, it won’t get the media very far with the White House, or the court of public opinion.

It is as if the donkies have realized the pigs they voted for are more equal than donkies

At this moment I felt sorry for Helen who has flaunted her power over press conferences relying upon the natural deference to her seniority.

I repected that deference. It was called manners. She deserved the first question, and she still deserves not to be flicked with the childish, churlish ‘ad nauseum’ sotto voce that belongs in Junior High and not at the podium of the White House

There is no joke in their questions and an honest man could have answered them with dignity instead of scorn. Even defending phony town halls. I personally have never seen an honest town hall so the war being waged here goes beyond rigged town halls.

This war is about rigged press conferences. The donkies found out they were no longer needed to run the farm

The new gang, whom Helen helped put into power, have no respect for her seniority and no class whatsoever. She isn’t playing ball, so they can stomp the old lady like a thug.

In what former Fatherland have I seen such trends?

I shall take time later to get a transcript of this
