Video: Vanity Fair author defends Palin hit piece

You knew there was going to be a thread on it; the only question was whether it’d be a regular post or the quote of the day. Now, pop quiz: Which rock-ribbed Republican not long ago called Todd Purdum, the author of the VF hatchet job, a “scumbag” and said this about his reporting?

“[He's] sleazy,” he said referring to Purdum. “He’s a really dishonest reporter. And one of our guys talked to him . . . And I haven’t read [the article]. There’s just five or six blatant lies in there. But he’s a real slimy guy”…

Answer here. If you’re looking for a takedown of the VF piece, Jim Geraghty has got you covered. My own reaction was simply that, for all its length and use of anonymous insiders, it failed to advance the ball much. The stories about Palin not getting along with McCain staffers or not being ready for the intense primetime of a national campaign are old hat by now. A more useful piece would have focused on what she’s doing to rehabilitate her image and how her weaknesses might spoil a bid in 2012. (Purdum touches on that but most of the piece is a rehash.) The chief virtue of the finished product is that it’s driven some Palin fans to such extreme exasperation that they’re now outing his sources while driving her critics to such extreme derangement that they’re doubling down on Trig trutherism.

I actually do hope she runs. The more I think about it, the more fascinating a Romney/Palin showdown in the primaries seems. She’ll have evangelicals and talk radio on her side; he’ll have moderates and, in all likelihood, superior organization. You can imagine Iowa breaking for her, New Hampshire breaking for him, and then war in South Carolina and Florida. Daily traffic for Hot Air in covering it: Two million hits or bust. Exit question: What do we think of the much-publicized photos in Runner’s World today? If there’s a woman in America who’s had five kids that looks better than she does, I’d like to meet her. But if it’s gravitas that she needs to cement herself as a serious challenger to The One, I can’t imagine that a check-me-out photo helps.

How can you defend trash??

therightscoop on June 30, 2009 at 10:37 PM

I’m not one of Palin’s biggest cheerleaders for 2012, but all I can say is that they must be extremely worried about her. She’s been so written about and so commented about, why publish another hit piece on her, and one that’s so lacking in substance, and full of stereotypes? I don’t think this will do anything for Purdum’s reputation.

Todd, what is that you have in your mouth? And Tina Brown, what’s in yours?

chris999 on June 30, 2009 at 10:38 PM

The woman on BOR suggest that Gov. Palin should talk about energy and travel out of the country. I’m like are you kidding me, where have you been for the last month.
Some of these people they pick off the street to be on their show. The two women on Hannity are Gov. Palin supporters but Hannity kept running his big mouth.

Right. Let’s see what your reaction would be if Bill Kristol came out with a long expose saying that according to various unnamed sources, Obama is a Muslim and quite sympathetic with Osama.

The liberals know Palin is the biggest force in the Republican party…they have to attack her, to try to stop her from gaining traction in the the independent vote.
They know she has the conservative vote, they have to stop the independents from switching to her.
These articles are aimed at the independents, they are written to re-inforce the stereotypes…hick town girl, Todd only has a high school education, difficult, because she is pretty she must be difficult (and the lib women go along with that), too many children, not popular because she dropped in the polls (even though she is still one of the most popular gov). McCain the “ultimate independent” doesn’t think highly of her, etc.
This guy just rehashed all the points that the independents don’t like about her.
There will be more and more of these.

right2bright on June 30, 2009 at 10:39 PM

There was some “Republican strategist” on O’Reilly tonight named Dyck who was blaming Palin for defending herself against all the unfair attacks against her. Dyck is exactly wht is wrong with the elitist Republicans in the party. W took it for 8 years and it got him not one bit of good will and the idiot label follows him around. Palin should not let that happen to her and she has a lot of good bloggers refuting that stuff for her daily. We need to fight for our good candidates

CCRWM on June 30, 2009 at 9:17 PM

yeah i saw that dumb broad tonight too…wanted to reach throught the tv and slap the hell out of her…she also said that Palin needed to focus on her energy projects…excuse me, twat, she was just down in the states promoting her pipeline…but i’m sure you were too busy getting your nails done…loser

PALIN for POTUS in 2012!!

I love the following quote

Winter isn’t as much fun, but even when it’s 20 or 30 below and pitch black, I still try to get out. I just put on tons of layers and bigger shoes so I can wear two pairs of wool socks.”

I was only out hunting in 28 below ONCE.. That was with no real wind and that was enough for me. Anything below 10 below and I’m staying in the darn cabin where I belong.

The metrosexuals just can’t understand that. It’s like the photo montage floating around on the internet

— Reagan with a Chainsaw
— G W Bush with a 6′ 10″ log in one hand and another in the other hand
— Barry Obama putting up curtains.

nuff said there.

As far as the attacks on Sarah.. Right out of olde alinsky. I’m wondering some day if we’ll be treated to Alinskygate tapes of someone at the top in the current admin coordinating the attacks on Sarah and her family.

So BenTy Shaker… How about if you join Sarah for one of those 30 below runs this winter???

Engineer a pipeline deal with the oil companies and canada – Yawn

—————————————————

Engage in a major quid pro quo with a dirtball under investigation where you get a million dollars worth of house and he gets control of a hospital – Huh what ??

Buy your own tanning bed with your money _SCANDAL SCANDAL SCANDAL

—————————————————

Write a blurb for a book with a self professed terrorist, let that terrorist and his wife watch your kids, serve on a board with him… Hmmmm Nothing

Be present as mayor when a conservative figure comes to town.. ARGH… SHe is a reactionary..

Yeah Benji… I am SO impressed with the fifth column’s credentials… OMG they are Soooo on track. I’m surprised half of these ‘journalists’ manage to breath without reading a telepromptered script.

The most important line in Purdum’s article:

I guess Purdom must not have heard of Media Malpractice or must have been on vacation when Sarah was interviewed by Lauer about two weeks ago.

Well, Benji, at least Kleist (who by the way married an Inuit like Palin) .. at least he manages an economy with a GDP of 1 billion dollars. Unlike your jug eared hero who managed an economy of…… precisely… a GDP of zero.

Now, while we are on the subject, Palin’s Alaska has a 2006 GDP of 29 Billion… Please rank the following GDP numbers in importance: 1 billion, Zero and 29 Billion.

Oh, While I’m disassembling your ‘logic’ Lets look at polupaltions managed prior to the election

Kleist – a whopping 57000 souls or so
OJugears – A whopping population of …… ZERo, Nil, Nada, Ought, Nothing, zippo, none, not a freaking soul
Palin – 670,053

Sheeesh…

novaculus on July 1, 2009 at 12:22 AM

I actually do hope she runs. The more I think about it, the more fascinating a Romney/Palin showdown in the primaries seems.

Romney’ll be stomped, no matter how much money he “lends” his campaign to keep it afloat. He seems to think (like you seem to, AP) that the way to get a Big Tent going is to reject the base to appeal to the eggplannt-headed moderates. Playing one part of your party against the other.

You get the Big Tent by UNITING the base, then reaching out to the eggplant-headed moderates saying, “This is who I am. This is where I stand. Come join me, and together we will be stronger.” Romney can’t do that. Palin can.

From “The Vision of the Anointed” by Thomas Sowell:

…Washington Post editorial board member Meg Greenfield recalled the mood she saw among Washington insiders in 1980:

It was the wisdom of the other contenders and of most Republican Party leaders, too, not to mention of practically everyone in Democratic politics, that Reagan was too old, too extreme, too marginal and not nearly smart enough to win the nomination. The Democrats, in fact, when they weren’t chortling about him, were fervently hoping he would be the nominee. When he carried the convention in Detroit, people I knew in the Carter White House were ecstatic.

This assessment of Reagan remained, even after he defeated President Carter in a landslide in the 1980 elections.

Palin is her own person, not Reagan, but the crass, stupid sneering at her by leftist pinheads and various Republican brainiacs and oh-so-smug “insiders” with their heads up their arses is of exactly the same variety that was directed at Reagan.

Django on July 1, 2009 at 3:38 AM

She should voice her disappointment with the GOP and say that it has strayed from its defending of the constitution and leave the republican party. Then she should voice that the constitution is being trampled by both legislative and executive branches. She should not attack liberals. She should voice the concern of historic liberals and that they once stood for the constitution. Then she should join the constitution party.

Shick, Palin does have one chance…UNITE WITH EITHER BOB BARR, RON PAUL OR CHUCK BALDWIN…who have been called Terrorists by The Lesbionic Woman Napolitano, the CIA (Which created Al-Qaeda and thus 9/11) and others in the fascist hate American sovereignty movement including the Obamanation.

But she must renounce her support for the Law Of the Sea Treaty, which gives the UN carte blanche control of our waters. As Phyllis Schlafly told Janet Porter on her talk radio program Faith 2 Action, Palin was misinformed on LOST.

Not only that, she must be MORE RESTRICTIVE with her family, especially that babymama drama…so pointed out by Debbie Schlussel on many an occasion for you neocons. Letting Todd Plain play Mr. Mom–PUH-FREAKING-LEEZE!

As someone who is a lukewarm Romney fan and more or less agnostic about a Palin bid in 2012, I think the RW piece is great for Palin. First of all, she actually reads the magazine and is a serious runner. There’s nothing in that piece I can see that would give her detractors much ammunition against her, but much in it that will burnish her image as a regular American who has a passion for running as many Americans do. She isn’t a fake-athlete like Barack Obama, and it’s kind of hard to paint a serious runner who will run in sub-zero temperatures as a bimbo.

I also liked her comment about the “trough of makeup” she doesn’t wear when she runs. She needs to do more of this self-deprecating talk.

rockmom on July 1, 2009 at 10:15 AM

You are right about that, and it is great to look back on those quotes about Reagan. The difference, though, is that Reagan was willfully underestimated, not just as a politician, but as an executive despite serving two successful terms as Governor of the second-largest state in the country and serving as President of a union.

I’m not sure Palin is being underestimated as an executive. Her record there is pretty thin. There’s a hell of a difference between running California for eight years and running Alaska for four.

I look at that guy and I think of the scene in Animal House where the girl says to her frat boyfriend’ “Is it supposed to be this soft?”. At least these foul leftists seem to be inbreeding and may die off. As for as clinton goes, I’ve always thought he was in it for the women and power and didn’t really have a radical leftist core. Sometimes he snaps and says something that that seems to reveal an honesty and sense of reality that is not appreciated on the left. Remember, bill was the one that said barry was nothing but a typical chicago political thug.

Holy shit, what sort of record are you looking for?! I’m a Palin fan and thus not objective, I admit, but I got that way because when she first was introduced I looked over her executive record both as governor and earlier as mayor and was incredibly impressed. Not many people actually get anything done, let alone what she got done, while taking on her own party and the entrenched cronyism of her state.

The RW piece was great. It shows that there is real substance and backbone to her incredible energy, discipline and positive outlook. As for the VF hit piece, it only motivated me to finally go over to SarahPAC and make a donation. Call it stimulus.

Palin is a weak choice for POTUS, as was well proven this last election.

First, she is too vulnerable to attacks..too easily exposed as a hypocrite(bc of her family and her own shotgun wedding)and too easily portrayed as an unnappealing bumpkin or fanatic. People and especially women did not want to be associated with her..as was evidenced by the many women who lied about having not voted for her.

Second, there are many people(roughly 20-30%)who will not vote for a woman prez(and yes MOST of them are women).

This is why we lost.

I will work to elect Sarah Palin in ‘12 because I think she is what we need in Washington.

As side effect of her winning would be to see the libs heads explode, and imagine having to watch Barry O-bey & Michelle having to walk the Palins around the White House, and having to watch Michelle stand with Todd Palin and her trying SO HARD to be gracious.

My joy will come when the Palin Family is standing on the White House lawn waving up to Marine One carrying Barry & Michelle back to Chicago.

It seems pretty obvious that Romney’s people are going after Palin through a sympathetic media, and also that the hardcore McCainiacs cannot accept the blame for their own incompetence and the failures of their own God McCain as a candidate. It irritates me as someone who likes Romney and used to like McCain. This kind of petty bullshit needs to stop.

rockmom on July 1, 2009 at 10:24 AM

Whoa… Romney’s people? I think you’ll find that the vast majority of Palin-hate from the so-called right comes from McCain, and all his pals who will be working on the Huck campaign.

LibTired on July 1, 2009 at 11:19 AM

This is why we lost.

MaximusConfessor on July 1, 2009 at 11:06 AM

Yeah, despite the roaring freight train of inevitable success that was, up to that point, the McCain machine.

Jim Treacher on July 1, 2009 at 11:20 AM

John McCain probably assembled the worst campaign team of all tyme. Not only were they totally incompetent, but most also lacked character.

Often times, it seemed like Sarah Palin was the only one who cared if the ticket won or lost. By mid-October McCain and most of the team were focusing on life after the campaign, not wanting to offend anyone.

bw222 on July 1, 2009 at 11:20 AM

First, she is too vulnerable to attacks..

Did you just get off the farm? ANYONE the left fears will be attacked relentlessly. If tomorrow Palin said she will never run for another office again we would be seeing all these hit pieces about Romney. If Romney said he was moving to Alaska to open a convenience store with Palin all the attack pieces would be about huckabee. On and on and on. Wake up!

peacenprosperity on July 1, 2009 at 11:23 AM

I smell a Huckabee rat .He one,s said the only diff. in him a Gov. Palin was she looked better in high heels. No Gov. Huckabee she,s a true consev. you are not.

thmcbb on July 1, 2009 at 11:29 AM

It’s clear that the left is terrified of Sarah Palin and that is good news for Republicans.

sinsing on July 1, 2009 at 11:30 AM

Palin is a weak choice for POTUS, as was well proven this last election.

Compared to what? The cluless liar and his band of merry theives in the WH.

First, she is too vulnerable to attacks..

Like EVERY other conservitive right?

too easily exposed as a hypocrite(bc of her family and her own shotgun wedding)and too easily portrayed as an unnappealing bumpkin or fanatic.

You mean PORTRAYED as a hypocrite, and INTENTIONALLY lied about to make her SEEM unnappealing don’t you?

People and especially women did not want to be associated with her..as was evidenced by the many women who lied about having not voted for her.

Well you got me there, what woman want’s to associate with someone smart, who has a great family, adorable kids, and a very sexy husband? Most of my friends are PROUD to have voted for her. I can see how we are really different from ALL those Odumbo voters who just won’t admit they screwed up!!

Second, there are many people(roughly 20-30%)who will not vote for a woman prez(and yes MOST of them are women).

Kinda like all those “whites” who would NEVER vote for a black guy huh?

Go back and crawl under your rock!

babydoll4you on July 1, 2009 at 11:30 AM

First, she is too vulnerable to attacks..

Another thing that people here seem blind to or have just plain forgotten. During the campaign before Palin got on the scene the media was going after Romney full bore. That’s how mccain won. With the help of huckabee. What do Palin and Romney have in common? They are washington outsiders and neither of them needs to be in washington. Palin has a full life and is happy and could walk away anytime and provide very well for her family and continue to be very happy. Romney has had a great life, has a great family and is filthy rich and needs nothing from washington. He could go play with the grandkids for the rest of his life or put his efforts and concentration back into buciness and the man would double his wealth again. I know some will try to say huckabee is an outsider but he is an attention whore and needs the power just like bill clinton.

peacenprosperity on July 1, 2009 at 11:31 AM

I don’t know if anybody has uncovered this card or not but if you’re comparing the “gravitas that she needs to cement herself as a serious challenger to The One” with the gravitas that Teh Won has … I prefer hers.

Case closed! Slam dunk! In your face! Frawg!

Sorry! Sarahcuda’s B-Ball creds proved superior to her running togs style for a moment. Sarah in the White House would be one more charming, attractive, charismatic president that the world would love. I guarantee she and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy wouldn’t have none of this going on.

Hawt.

Jim Treacher on July 1, 2009 at 11:20 AM

Hah!

It’s funny that they won and yet they still can’t let go of criticizing Palin. What are they scared of?

roux on July 1, 2009 at 10:23 AM

That’s a rhetorical question, right?

We need principled politicians in WDC, because cockroaches hate the light. So, when politicians see someone principled, attractive and charismatic like Palin come along they have to figure out a way to dismantle her. Its basically jealousy and a fear that if the right words come out of Palin’s mouth that they will be unable to counter her. Given enough time, Palin can assemble a team that will guide her and properly train her to disassemble the liberal setup questions and policies. Her personal intelligence is not nearly as important to Americans as honesty, integrity, and principles. When a country like Iran has citizens protesting in the streets and being attacked by thugs, you don’t need to be a rocket-scientist to understand that that is ‘wrong’ and that as the super power freedom loving nation that we are, we should support those citizens.

Hah!

Winebabe on July 1, 2009 at 12:06 PM

Palin is a weak choice for POTUS, as was well proven this last election.

Hahahahahaha…she was selected as the VP candidate with no notice, she wasn’t preparing for months to run for national office. You’ll note that President Doofus had to prepare for 4 months before throwing his hat into the ring. Now, if Palin had run for the top slot and been unprepared, that would have been a legitimate complaint, however start comparing apples to apples if you want to make a statement like that. As shown by that moron Joe Biden, you don’t need to be the ‘best’ in order to hold a largely meaningless position. I don’t know about you, but the idea of having Joe Biden assume the mantle of PotUS is a pretty scary thought, that man is a moron.

Geministorm on July 1, 2009 at 12:10 PM

Q: Why is the left STILL attacking Palin?

A: The best and the brightest on the right go into business or devote their lives to family or charitable causes. The best and the brightest on the left go into politics. The result is that the left are professional politicians so they KNOW who they must destroy so they can win. Palin is AWESOME so she must be destroyed. Mitt was the only candidate last year that could have actually saved the economy, so he had to be destroyed (thanks, Huck, for giving us McCain hence Obama! FU!) Ron Paul has the best handle on what it takes to really fix this country, so he has to be destroyed by being painted as a crazed lunatic.

When are we conservatives going to get it? Professional politicians in the two major parties are nothing but the heads of a 2 headed snake that share power. McCain THREW the election by allowing Wallace and Schmidt to trash Palin.

Give me Palin, Paul or Romney in 2012 so we can repeal the dismantling of our freedoms before it’s too late. Anyone else who doesn’t want to live in the United Socialist States of America should support whoever runs against Obama even if s/he is not his his/her “dream” candidate.

JustTruth101 on July 1, 2009 at 12:16 PM

Whatever..

It is a fact (that we are all aware of) that palin is not the brighest bulb on the lamp.

Hello..she was a beauty contestant! What else do you need to know?

We had a chance for a minute but she blew it big time with that katie couric interview.

If it’s just a hot chick that you think will win us elections..there are much better choices. In 2012 palin will be pretty old and menopause will be hitting any day now.

MaximusConfessor on July 1, 2009 at 12:23 PM

too easily exposed as a hypocrite(bc of her family and her own shotgun wedding)and too easily portrayed as an unnappealing bumpkin or fanatic.

And Obama was too easily exposed as having questionable alliances with some very un-American radicals. The guy gets caught lying all of the time and yet no media will vet the guy because they are too busy bent over and licking up Obama’s lunch from yesterday (sorry for the gross-out imagery).

I really don’t care if Palin’s daughter had sex out of wedlock and got pregnant, at worst that means that Palin’s career kept her too busy to put enough time into her family. However, if we go down that path then we’ll have to negate a ton of politicians for the ‘hypocrisy’ of raising kids that didn’t turn out perfect…how idiotic do liberals have to be to try and pull that out of their asses?

Clinton has a history of alledged sexual predatory behavior…no big deal

Obama has a history of associating with radicals…isn’t he dreamy and historic?

Dodd, Frank and Murtha have serious ethical issues…put them in charge of handling billions of dollars

Palin may have had pre-marital sex with the man she married and had five kids with and her oldest daughter got knocked up out of wedlock…OUTRAGEOUS HYPOCRISY!!! String her up!

Jedi mind tricks don’t work on everyone you know? Just the stupid liberals like Andrew Sullivan (Trig-truther).

If so, that would leave quite an impression.

We lost because of McCain. Pure and simple.

Winebabe on July 1, 2009 at 12:05 PM

I’d love to agree with that, but having talked to a sampling of female “Independent” voters (read: idiots), it is depressingly clear to me that Palin’s stance on abortion and the media’s ability to portray her as a fire-breathing evangelical swung them from being intrigued by her to hating her guts.

Remember, McCain/Palin came out of the convention up by almost 10 points. McCain was a doddering, vain, tongue-tied old foo, to be sure, but the Palin Bounce evaporated once the media got their hooks in, portraying her as a wolf-murdering, fanatically pro-life dolt.

And the fact that she could be taken down by a fluffy cupcake like Couric was worrisome, even to me. I hadn’t contributed to a Republican ticket since Reagan, but I plumped down the max the day Palin signed on. Must say, she wasn’t ready for it. Her time may already have passed.

guntotinglibertarian on July 1, 2009 at 12:38 PM

I actually do hope she runs. The more I think about it, the more fascinating a Romney/Palin showdown in the primaries seems. She’ll have evangelicals and talk radio on her side; he’ll have moderates and, in all likelihood, superior organization. You can imagine Iowa breaking for her, New Hampshire breaking for him, and then war in South Carolina and Florida.

If nothing else, Palin would neuter Huck…the man chiefly responsible for Republican Nominee John McCain. No one should forget that anytime soon.

Kid from Brooklyn on July 1, 2009 at 12:57 PM

the man chiefly responsible for Republican Nominee John McCain. No one should forget that anytime soon

I would submit that the people who were responsible for McCain as the nominee were:
1. The Republican Party morons who acquiesced to open primaries in key states.
2. The pro-life zealots on talk radio who couldn’t stomach Romney or Giuliani. The preferred a Constitution-shredding RINO whore like McCain, just because he’d always been consistent on abortion.

I don’t understand how otherwise-intelligent conservatives cannot realize that most of the voting public – especially younger voters – just don’t give a damn about abortion: they consider it a settled issue.

And they’re right: if Roe v Wade was overturned tomorrow and the abortion question went back to the states, where it belongs, my bet is that only Utah would outright ban abortion.

Time to move on.

Jeff from WI on July 1, 2009 at 1:38 PM

As more facts concerning Governor Palin come to light, and more media attacks are perpetuated against her, Sarah Palin will be seen as the only real challenger to the Socialist Democrat agenda, and that is what most Americans will be demanding by 2010. That demand will carry over in 2012, and that will kill off most of the moderate beltway republicans and their socialist friends.

Great idea smart guy. Let the genocide of 50 million plus keep growing.

If both the GOP and the Dems support abortion..you will see Christians flock by the tens of millions to the Dem party and you will never have a chance at winning anything ever again. We have no reason whatsoever besides this to stay in the GOP.

Fine. I admire a principled stance. But I also believe the Founding Fathers would have left the question up to the states, where it belongs. By continuing to make it a national political issue, pro-lifers violate the spirit of Federalism…and doom any chance the Right has of taking back this country from Liberal Fascists.

Oh, sure, Christians (and I happen to be one) will just flock in droves to a party that wants to teach their kindergartners the joys of gay sex, deny their rights to home-schooling and continue to drive their children into debt, poverty and depravity. Nice reasoning.
