He was caught with his pants down, and needs to come clean, by admitting that he screwed up, both to his wife and the people of South Carolina.

But he should stop trying to make excuses by claiming the Argentine woman was his “soul mate”. That only makes it worse, for everybody concerned. Whether Maria half a world away tempted him or misled him, they BOTH did wrong, and Sanford needs to apologize and tell everyone that he will do everything possible to reconcile with his wife and faithfully serve the people of South Carolina, then stop talking about it and get down to business.

What constitutes a “soul mate”, like beauty, is in the eye or heart of the beholder, and can be extremely deceptive. A self-proclaimed “soul mate” can become a person’s most vicious enemy on a moment’s notice. Been there, done that.

Note to Mark Sanford, and all others caught in such a trap: There is no such thing as a soul mate, except Jesus Christ.

I always wondered about that. Why a woman falls for a guy on death row. I guess it explains women being the base of the Democratic Party.

See, it’s not just liberals who can be totally immersed in themselves. It just hurts more when conservatives do it because we expect them to behave with dignity and honor and strive for something higher than their personal needs. We expect nothing from liberals and they always deliver.

The personal virtue scandals break fairly evenly across parties over time. Since there doesn’t seem to be a correlation between how much a politician talks about fidelity and how well he behaves, the GOP should focus conversations about virtue on public policy.

I don’t care if Sanford stays as governor (that’s for his constituents to decide), but I do wish he’d STFU. He’s not helping himself or his party.
