Quote of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on June 30, 2009 by Allahpundit

“But Kristol’s charge was seconded by Randy Scheunemann, a longtime foreign policy adviser to McCain who is also close to the Standard editor and was thought to be a Palin ally within the campaign.

‘Steve Schmidt has a congenital aversion to the truth,’ Scheunemann said. ‘On two separate and distinct occasions, he speculated about about Governor Palin having post-partum depression, and on the second he threatened that if more negative publicity about the handling of Governor Palin emerged that he would leak his speculation [about post-partum depression] to the press. It was like meeting Tony Soprano.’

Schmidt said Scheunemann’s charges were ‘categorically untrue.’…

‘Bill Kristol, going back to the time of the campaign, has taken a lot of cheap shots at the campaign without ever offering a plausible path to victory,’ Schmidt said. ‘He’s in the business of ad hominem insults and criticism.’…

‘At end of campaign there were a series of leaks that were so damaging that it was consuming the 24-hour cable news cycle. Leaks to reporters where Sarah Palin was called all manner of names. [McCain senior adviser] Rick Davis and I jointly felt that was outrageous. So we made an attempt for the first time in the campaign to try to ID who was leaking information that was so damaging and demoralizing to a campaign that was in very difficult circumstances,’ Schmidt said.

‘What was discovered was an email from a very senior staff member to Bill Kristol that then entered into the news current and continued the negative in-fighting stories for an additional news cycles. I recommended tough medicine for that individual that was carried out,’ Schmidt said, again referring to Scheunemann. ‘Bill Kristol might not have liked that decision, and he might be mad about what happened to his friend, but going all the way back he has been a part of this story and I’ve preserved his confidentiality in that until now. But his use of his public forums to take a personal fight and make character attacks is just simply dishonest and wrong.’”

ddrintn on June 30, 2009 at 11:31 PM

What’s odd to me is that her contributions were so obvious. She delivered exactly what a VP candidate is suppose to deliver. The Couric format was completely wrong, and it was obvious that the press clamour to “vet” her was ridiculously overplayed by McCain.

Fine, let her go on regular interviews, but the Gibson/Couric method? Disastrous format. It gave them way, way too much time to set her up. And boy, did they.

She does just fine in interviews on topics. She did fine in the debate. She was prepared completely to be a VP.

The issue was McCain’s age. She immediately started being compared to O, not Biden. THAT was the mistake of choosing her, except it had nothing to do with her. It had to do with his age.

The following email was just left on John McLame’s website:

Dear Mr. McCain,
To be quite honest I can count ten people inclduing myself, my wife and several friends that voted specifically for Ms. Palin, NOT FOR YOU! Quite frankly I believe that you were chosen by democrats crossing the fence and registering republican for their state’s primary then crossing back to vote for Obama as they laughed at true conservatives like myself while putting you, a RINO, up against a socialist. To be quite frank I think that it was known that up to that point your party was not electing you, and for that reason democrats knew they had to help you! For this reason I wish you would just tell your staff AND YOURSELF that they should leave Sarah Palin alone! I would never vote for you, but I will vote for Sarah Palin every chance I get! I appreciate what you did in Vietnam, just as I helped during the evacuating of Saigon. I DON’T appreciate how you’ve hurt the Republican Party in the Senate!

Good Day Sir!

I don’t know if that poll means anything. If it is accurate, I am to believe that in 1999 55% of Americans believed that the Democrats were “too conservative”, and 36% believed they were “too liberal’.

I don’t remember 1999 all that well, but that’s simply impossible. Because that 55% then turned around and dumped AlGore in favor of some plain-spoken Texas Governor with ties to the oil industry. Because AlGore was too conservative?

Gallup is a joke.

I don’t think that Sarah made too many mistakes. I think she made one big mistake and that was not to gain more control over her role in the campaign. I mean to make her endlessly repeat the same campaign speech at every event knowing everyone was watching everything about her, to make her go on more interviews with an extremely hostile couple like Couric and Gibson, quitting Michigan, and so much more… I bet she doesn’t make the same mistake twice though…

What I didn’t anticipate was how many Republicans would commit political suicide, and that those who avoided that fate would form a circular firing squad and take each other out.

I think it was ego and the fear that he was being overshadowed. He started to go on her campaign stops with her because she was outdrawing him everytime by thousands. The real low point though was sitting with her during interviews which made it look like he was babysitting her…I was embarassed for him..

Thank you. I’ll have to print that and practice.
I still type all my correspondence on a Smith/Corona electric typewriter. How many 44 year olds can say that?

“Right hand man” is not a natural role for her. She’s an alpha.

I agree she has always been the leader taking on corrupt politicians and running the show. I really think once in the campaign she probably wondered OMG who are these people?

CCRWM on July 1, 2009 at 12:15 AM

How many 44 year olds would admit to that?

That is my impression also. Live and learn, there is no other way.

Steve Schmidt sure is defensive with his comment about “Bill Kristol, going back to the time of the campaign, has taken a lot of cheap shots at the campaign without ever offering a plausible path to victory”.

I wasn’t aware it was Bill Kristol’s job to offer a plausible path to victory. Isn’t that the campaign managers job? Was Bill Kristol the campaign manager?

I especially like this one: “I’m sure John McCain would be president today if only Bill Kristol had been in charge of the campaign.”

meeeeeow. Get a tub of jello and let these babes go at it.
