Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on June 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This one’s a tag-team effort between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, showing a lack of coordination between the President and his Secretary of State.  As events in Honduras unfolded, Obama publicly called the removal of President Manuel Zelaya a coup.  Hillary sent an entirely different message in order to keep American options open:

U.S. President Barack Obama said on Monday the coup that ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was illegal and would set a “terrible precedent” of transition by military force unless it was reversed.

“We believe that the coup was not legal and that President Zelaya remains the president of Honduras, the democratically elected president there,” Obama told reporters after an Oval Office meeting with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.

Meanwhile, Hillary actually did a little research first before using the term “coup,” and contradicted Obama:

Despite Obama’s comments, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the administration was not formally designating the ouster as a military coup for now, a step that would force a cut-off of most U.S. aid to Honduras.

Under U.S. law, no aid — other than for the promotion of democracy — may be provided to a country whose elected head of government has been toppled in a military coup.

So is it a non-coup coup, or just a non-coup?  Even Hillary got confused after this:

“We do think that this has evolved into a coup,” Clinton told reporters, adding the administration was withholding that determination for now.

Asked if the United States was currently considering cutting off aid, Clinton shook her head no.

Note to the administration: if certain terms trigger actions you want to avoid, don’t use them.  And if you say, “We do think that this has evolved into a coup,” then you’re not withholding that determination — you’ve just announced it!  If we have a rule that halts aid after a coup, it’s worse to say that we think it’s a coup but we won’t officially call it that to keep aid flowing than it is to just refrain from calling it a coup in the first place.

It’s Amateur Hour at both the White House and Foggy Bottom.   (Thanks to Matt at Creative Minority Report.)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Something like on-dor-oo’-ras? It was wierd. Who does he think he is?

Good grief, indeed.

Not so much a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing. More a case of the right hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

These people will say anything, if it makes logical sense or not, that they believe will be cheered on by the Obamatron crowd here and abroad.

There is something ironic that Hillary Clinton has all been off the radar for so long (the White House opting to release foreign policy discussions) but the minute she does say anything, it is in direct contradiction with Obama’s talking points about the softer side of despots. Next time Hillary speaks, it will be wearing an I “heart” tyrants t-shirt.

Meanwhile Shrillary, who was more knowledgeable of the situation, tries to walk the administration’s line without damaging her own credibility.

Should be interesting to watch. Will BO bannish Hil from Honduras? Will Hil distance herself from chavismo?

AZCoyote on June 30, 2009 at 8:55 AM

The funny thing is that Obama probably took such a strong line on what happened in Honduras because of all the criticism he copped over his limp wrist-ed reaction to the Iranian elections, subsequent riots and what appeared to be his appeasement of the regime in Tehran.

The only problem is that he picked the wrong faction to throw his support behind and instead of appearing like a statesman who supports free and democratic nations he now appears to be a bad caricature of Nevil Chamberlain happily lending support and trying to appease just about every two bit dictator like Chavez that he runs afoul of.

Dreadnought223 on June 30, 2009 at 8:55 AM

Someone needs to soundly take Obama to task for using the word coup in decribing what happened in Honduras. The Hondurans followed their constitutional process to remove Zelaya from power. (IOW Turn the progressives (code word for Marxists) weasel word process against them.) The Hondurans were operating within their own law. Contrary to what Obama and Chavez say, Zelaya’s removal was legal.

This has Bill Clinton’s fingerprints all over it.
.
Hillary was subtle on this matter because of the following reasoning:

.
What Hillary did was to talk to Bill Clinton on this matter. She asked him for his take on it and Bill nudged her in the right direction. Bill Clinton is many things but he still loves America more than Obama hates it. It is a good move by Hillary. It shows who is more savy when it comes to American foreign policy. This anchors to more of our true American interest first and foremost I recognize Bill Clinton’s signature in regards to Hillary’s difference of opinion to Obama’s on this Honduras matter.
,
This is a manuever to distance herself from Obama. It will done incremently at every oppurtunity and up until the day she resigns from this admnistration. Bill & Hillary are not newcomers to the world stage. They both probably see the full bore of the future backlash against the Obama administation coming. It is important understand the winds of political shifts and their momentums. Remember Bill was known for watching to polls and what the overall feelings were of his fellow Americans while he was president. How else can Hillary make a shot for the presidency in 2012.

HoustonRight on June 30, 2009 at 9:52 AM

The way it looks, if the 2010 elections don’t put a stop to the power grabs, then 2012 may be largely symbolic.

Further, if between now and 2010 elections, we can’t beat back cap-and-trade and Obamacare, much of the damage will be irreparable, even by Nov 2010.

There’s not a doubt in my mind that the Obamanation, whether in one year or five, is headed for an essential crisis, triggered by the economic/financial meltdown. As the truism goes, if the people can’t express their backlash by changing their gubmit at the polls, then they’ll eventually do it in the streets.

petefrt on June 30, 2009 at 10:12 AM

Sporty1946 on June 30, 2009 at 10:21 AM

It is a good move by Hillary. It shows who is more savy when it comes to American foreign policy

More accurately, that reflects the distinction between advisers. Contrasting Obama v. Clinton themselves, noting first their mutual Marxism, the Clintonesque “Savvy” rests within generational background experience and the comparable lack of racially motivated anti-Americanism. Granting no right to deserve this approach, Hillary has as much right to ask, “What will this do for Chelsea” as Michelle has in the famous Obama demand, “What will my kids get out of it.” Deserve’s got nothing to do with it.”

maverick muse on June 30, 2009 at 10:24 AM

Actually, making Hillary the salvation of this administration is not a good thing. She is every bit as bad as Obama. They are sympatico as far as doctrine. Hillary is just more sneaky about it as was Bill. No Democrat should ever be near any seat of power for a very long time. They cannot be trusted. If there is anything good about the times we are facing it is that the Dems think that all of the Dems out in the rest of America think like they do. There are enough that do not. I hate that it is taking so much time, but it’s their party that is in trouble.
The Honduran thing was not a coup. Just their Constitution showing up to save the day. Now you can tell what the Dems think about ours. Every day Obama must be worried that ours will come for him. He keeps testing, testing, testing. Where’s the birth certificate?

We needs us some more of this ‘smart diplomacy’.

GarandFan on June 30, 2009 at 10:39 AM

If it wasn’t so tragic. This Presidents incompetence would be greatly entertaining. It is the conseguences that we all are about to suffer that turns my laughter into tears.

HoustonRight on June 30, 2009 at 9:42 AM

I know. I keep wondering how nervous the rest of the world is becoming. In the past love us or hate us America could always be counted on to help stop oppression or at least offer moral support. Who can they count on now? This can`t end well.

LSUMama on June 30, 2009 at 10:41 AM

Oh God,the dumba$$ Biden is the “smartest person in the room”
when he is sitting with these idiots.

“smart power” ugh!!!!!

Yet another example of why liberals are always having to tell everybody how smart they are because it does not show.

LSUMama on June 30, 2009 at 10:41 AM

I am conveinced it will end well. But, there will be alot of pain and suffering getting there. And, I may or may not live to see it.

HoustonRight on June 30, 2009 at 10:52 AM

A boy pretending to do a man’s job.
As was stated above, it would be funny to watch if the consequences weren’t so serious and dire.

SKYFOX on June 30, 2009 at 11:02 AM

You’ve started the Green Room, maybe you need the Obamateur Room, too. I mean, it seems you could actually have a new one every waking hour. As this administration ages, it’s gaffe pace actually is increasing.

Yes, I agree. Another Reagan is needed now more than ever. Sadly, there isn’t one on the horizon.

Perhaps all of these comments were made in a 3:00 a.m. phone call and they were still a bit groggy.

MarkTheGreat on June 30, 2009 at 11:24 AM

Now this really is an Obamateurism. Obama went with his gut, which was to express his simpatico with the leftist President and against the “right-wing” military in Honduras. Hillary actually seems to have gathered the facts before she spoke.

It’s almost unfathomable to me that Obama would make that statement after a meeting with President Uribe.

rockmom on June 30, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Please help if you can.

Americannodash on June 30, 2009 at 11:18 AM

By clicking a time stamp in the Hot Air Blog threads, you get the comment’s unique URL, like this.

On Google web advanced search, in “all of these words,” enter any specific words you are certain are in the post you seek, such as: Are you my twin? Or, are you copying me?

In “this exact wording or phrase,” enter the name of the commenter and, if you know it, the month or exact date of the post you seek, such as this: Loxodonta on June 29, 2009

In the “Search within a site or domain,” enter hotair.com. Then press “Advanced Search,” and you find the URL(‘s) for thread (s) in which those words appear, like this, and search for the specific post or commenter you are seeking.

This only works for posts that are so many hours old. I don’t know how many. The more general you are, the more hits you will get. For example, by only including the name of a commenter and the domain name, you get all the URL’s for threads in which the commenter posted or was quoted. So, by seeking Americannodash at hotair.com, I get 160 hits.

As I am not skilled in the use of the internet or computers, I may be mistaken about the best search approach. I also do not know all short cuts. So, I am not the best instructor for what your wish to know. However, you may prefer to learn from the mistakes made by me, than make a lot of mistakes to learn from your own errors. I have no idea why, but that thought just popped into my head.

There’s a joke about a man who tells a psychiatrist, “Everybody hates me,” to which the psychiatrist responds, “That’s ridiculous – everyone doesn’t know you, yet.” Which brings me to Barack Obama: one of the best-informed people in the American security establishment told me the other day that the president is a “Manchurian Candidate”.
