CA Dem leader: Why do we allow free speech to terrorize politicians?

posted at 10:11 am on June 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This would be great satire, except that California’s Speaker of the Assembly, Karen Bass, was foolish enough to say it — and believe it.  In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Bass responded to a question about conservative talk radio by calling show hosts terrorists, and openly wondering why we allow people to call politicians and give their opinions (via The Corner):

How do you think conservative talk radio has affected the Legislature’s work?

The Republicans were essentially threatened and terrorized against voting for revenue. Now [some] are facing recalls. They operate under a terrorist threat: “You vote for revenue and your career is over.” I don’t know why we allow that kind of terrorism to exist. I guess it’s about free speech, but it’s extremely unfair.

There’s a lot of stupidity and tyranny locked into those few words.  The First Amendment guarantees the right to petition the government for redress of grievances, even apart from the “free speech” issues Bass casually discards.  Elected politicians are accountable to the people who elect them in a free society.  Politicians do not acquire lordly status when they go to the Assembly, or anywhere else.

Usually, politicians are smart enough to at least pay lip service to getting feedback from their constituents.  Instead, Bass calls them “terrorists” for … what?  Calling their representatives and telling them not to raise taxes even higher, in the state with the sixth-highest per capita tax burden in the nation?  Expressing their opinions?  Telling politicians they won’t get their support if they vote for a tax hike?  That’s democracy, not terrorism, although I’m hardly surprised that Bass can’t tell the difference.

Maybe Bass should embed with our forces in Iraq or Afghanistan to get a sense of what terrorism really means.  On second thought, the men and women on the front lines have it bad enough.

And while we’re looking at that exchange, what happened to Patt Morrison, the LA Times reporter?  Did Morrison not feel that answer worthy of a follow-up — like, “Are you seriously equating dissent with terrorism?”  Or better yet, “Have you lost your mind?”  Morrison appears more interested in promoting Bass than actually conducting an interview.

Beware the politicians who consider dissent terrorism.  They’re either idiotic beyond belief, or tyrants waiting for an opportunity.  Bass might just be both.

Crazy stuff, but what I’m waiting for is a serious attempt to remove the electoral college. THAT will be the sign. Few will buy into removing the term limit on the Presidency, but the electoral college will seem like such a “fair” thing to do so “every vote counts.”

The only thing BHO’s voters want to know is whether they can get free tuition to that there electoral college.

Fairness, you know is one of those highly nuanced concepts or, as Thomas Sowell would say, “slippery words” (like democracy and freedom) that are best realized when the interests of each individual (and therefore, the group as a whole) are mutually protected.

Ask the politicians that like to lecture us about fairness to try negotiating and administering a fair government between taxpayers and voters.

On second thought, don’t bother. They can’t conceive it, let alone do it.

This stupid Speaker Bass isn’t at all appropriate for being made an example, as she’s plainly just a sh1thead and aimlessly running her mouth. But considering the way American and Canadian officials are chopping away at important liberties such as speech, press, and keeping and bearing arms, it seems it might be useful if one or two effective opponents of these rights, in each decade, were made spectacular examples. At any rate, it seems one must find a way, at intervals, to rivet the attention of officians on the injustice and danger of becoming an effective opponent of the Americans’ and Canadians’ most important liberties.

That anyone considers the Democrat Party the “smart” party is what astonishes me. I haven’t seen a Democrat politician in my lifetime that I consider above the 50th percentile in intelligence. Democrats are too stupid to realize just how limited they are.

“Revenue” for a business means money received for goods sold, but what has the California state government sold to anyone? But notice how the Federal tax agency is called the Internal “Revenue” Service? Which has sold nothing to the American people, and doesn’t offer them “service” either?

“Revenue” for a government means “tax increases” for those who pay them. It’s a question of free speech against not-so-free money from the taxpayers. Funny how using the correct word makes grievances seem like pragmatism instead of terrorism.

Does “revenue” by its real name (tax increases) smell as sweet? Shakespeare might be wrong on this one.

Agree, but in the end, I don’t see the left as a whole in this country, of having any sort of ability to carry off a totalitarian state.

They are just too lazy and stupid. The reason Americans are leftists, is basically because (1) they’re woefully misguided (2) they’re complete idiots and (3) they’re full of envy and looking for a handout.

I don’t see any of those categories getting off their butts and doing the hard work that’s required to pull off a left wing totalitarian state. The regimes of Stalin and Mao were vile, but they were carried out by highly motivated individuals who worked long hours in physically demanding jobs.

Ask the average ACORN employee to work 7 days a week, 16 hours a day working as a gulag prison guard, beating prisoners? Please. Won’t happen. Great leader can issue orders from sunrise to sundown, at some point, the lower ranks have to carry them out. And that’s where it crumbles.

What will save America from the latest manifestation of leftist stupidity is the laziness of the American leftist. These people are leftists precisely because they are utterly useless.

How did this country fall so far as to get such absolute garbage as a speaker in any congress or legislature? And some people wonder how Hitler could have risen to power in 1930′s Germany.

.
It makes one wonder doesn’t it. Here, these public officials are given the greatest opportunity to govern for their city, county, state and country with respect to and for the people and they show distain for them instead. What should not be dismissed from this state speakers remarks is the not so subtle indications of wanting to rule us rather than represent us with honesty and integrity. Whatever level of government capacity a public official serves it goes beyond the pale that the electorate has to remind them that they work for us and not the other way around. Californians this speakers words need to be taken to heart. Speaker Bass has just descibed what can only be considered oppressive rhetoric that is common place in a despotic government. Speaker Bass probably is more of a reflective symptom mind set of the Speaker of our U.S. House of Representatives than we actually have failed to expose and realize. I think measures of the past rhetoric by Pelosi should be re-analyzed with more scrutiny than I previously considered before. Parallels are appearing to come into alignment. Just consider who has been orchestrating the lies behind the scenes. In addition to obstructing or dismissing investigations in to wrong doings already [e.g. Murtha]. Does such leadership mandate a recall of their representative from office? Perhaps so, what if questions of these type of probable and possible infractions are not investigated, indicted or prosecuted by the aggregate leadership? Who is responsible in the congress for keeping the congress accountable? What good is the representatives to the American people if they are allowed to behave above the laws of which they write? I again will reiterate, the representatives have forgotten that they serve the American people and not the other way around. They do not represent the electorate if they behave as rulers and depots instead of honest law abiding citizens of the republic of the U.S.A. just like we are expected to be.
.
In conclusion: Speakers Bass and Pelosi need a serious review by an outside of the beltway investigator to either clean house or proclaim exoneration for their past possible impropriety.

Not to be “picky” but I think this would be better stated as, “Liberty is terrorism?”

MB4 on June 30, 2009 at 2:01 PM

Uh, Jeff? You and I are always on the same wavelength, buddy. But I have to confess here, I live in Marin County, home base for Barbara Boxer. There are, indeed, lots of conservatives in CA: we’re just outnumbered by wack-job Lefties and rent-seeking immigrant voters of one stripe or another.

What am I supposed to do? Move to Texas or Utah? No, thanks. I’d rather stand my ground and at least try to make a difference.

And, uh, last time I checked, WI wasn’t exactly a seething hotbed of conservative politics, no?

guntotinglibertarian on June 30, 2009 at 1:38 PM

WI certainly has become a liberal “blue” state. It contains the Berkeley of the Midwest, UW Madison. It’s become a tax hell hole. It’s U.S. Senators are your choice of a limp wristed millionare that stays in power by doing NOTHING in the Senate and owning the Bucks. The other lowlife is perhaps the lowest of the low, Feingold. As for a Governor, we have a bald headed liberal loser that is driving business away faster than about every other state in the area. If NK could get a missile as far as my state, believe me it would be no great loss.

Janos Hunyadi on June 30, 2009 at 1:55 PM

Exactly. A common liberal refrain is “something needs to be done”.

Not, “I need to do XXXXX”. Someone else needs to do something. Always someone else.

That’s because they’re all for people doing things to help THEM and to shoveling government/private money to THEM.

Let’s face it, in this country (at least up until Obama’s coronation), if you had just a little drive and ambition, you could live pretty well. And probably not have the time to waste on leftwing political movements.

So who’s going to do the actual work? Not the trust-fund millionaires (e.g. Kennedy) and geriatric hippies (your uber rich SF lefties), for sure. They pay servants to wipe their butts in the morning.

The millions who voted for Democrats? They’re waiting for Barack Obama to show up at their doorstep with a bag of gold in his hand, as if he were the new spokesman for Publisher’s Clearinghouse.

You couldn’t get a days worth of work out of those people in a month of Sundays. We have nothing to fear from these sloths.

NoDonkey on June 30, 2009 at 2:04 PM

Is it just me, or are the Dems starting to sound (and act) more and more like they’d be more at home in The Reichstag or Politburo or Central Committee than in an elected representitive assembly?

We all knew “Change” was coming, just wondering if these people understand that tyranny ISN’T a change a great deal of Americans “can believe in”…

SuperCool on June 30, 2009 at 2:07 PM

I need to point out the obvious. Politicians elected in heavily majority black districts are complete morons nearly everytime. Often times they are corrupt as well, I would wager at least 30% of the black congressman in washington have been censored at some point in thier careers. The black politicians that are out of the norm, in other words appear to be fairly intelligent and principled, are nearly always republicans or come from districts that are largely white democrat. Why do black Americans, when they have the power of the majority, seem to always vote for idiots?

Hey, if you’re terrorized by someone disagreeing with you then you have the problem.

I just made the phone call guys, but we need to meltdown her phone lines!

Her Capitol office line is 916-319-2047. You can talk to the receptionist, or ask for the comment line(you’ll get a voicemail box that someone listens to) just make sure to let her know that as a registered voter, and involved citizen, you find it outrageous she views you as a terrorist, and that by leaving this message you are now viewed by her as an active terrorist. Demand a public appology and tell her you’ll do what you can to ensure she is defeated in the primary or general election when she is up for re-election if she doesn’t extend an appology.

excerpt from my email to speaker.bass@assembly.ca.gov

“How do you think conservative talk radio has affected the Legislature’s work?”

“The Republicans were essentially threatened and terrorized against voting for revenue. Now [some] are facing recalls. They operate under a terrorist threat: “You vote for revenue and your career is over.” I don’t know why we allow that kind of terrorism to exist. I guess it’s about free speech, but it’s extremely unfair.”

My family and I are ‘terrorists’? You vile and ignorant woman.
A public apology please, hopefully followed by your resignation and prolonged silence.

“You vote for revenue and your career is over.”

Our right to vote for candidates and officials who represent our beliefs and and share our values is a key tenet in a representative democracy (while one still exists in this rapidly declining, free-spending Obama-run country). Your statements make it clear you have no understanding whatsoever of basic high school-level civics. A statement that profoundly insulting suggests strongly you are unfit for any position beyond super-sizing one’s french fries.

I guess it’s about free speech”

You “guess”? That’s the best you can do? A “guess”? I exercise my constitutionally guaranteed right to express my opinion asking that my elected officials not (further) bankrupt my state, and you ‘guess’ it is “Unfair,” “Terrorism,” “a threat,” and maybe just maybe, “free speech”? Some people are stupid, and others are dangerously stupid. Please have an intelligent person explain which category best suits you.

It seems to me there was a special election this past May. I may be just another uneducated conservative ‘terrorist,’ but I don’t recall seeing any headlines touting victory for your plans to steal more ‘revenue’ from working California taxpayers to support endless special interest spending programs. Madam Speaker, don’t let facts get between you and your Marxist visions of Utopia. Time for a reality check. Irresponsible spending and plans for redistribution of our wealth are not popular ideas with anyone except the ignorant and dishonest.

The Neos are still hypocrites. If Limbaugh was a hardcore Democrat, they would be trying to censor him as well.

Everytime I say the Democrat Congress can’t possibly get any worse, they go and prove me wrong.

Maybe they can elect Michael Jackson’s corpse to the Senate, although that would be an improvement over a live Al Franken.

Folks, let’s turn this around and make a guess as to the Left’s reaction were a Republican to make such an outrageous assertion.

As has happened in the past, Demoncraps from far and wide would be calling for each and every Republican to disavow these statements, lest it be implied that they agree with them. The would also calling for said Republican to resign in disgrace.

So should it be in this case – Demonrats at every level of government should have to disavow these statements and call for this official to resign immediately.

Or do they agree with the Statement?

Not much going on then, mostly action at the Forts. Blackhawk War was a bit more interesting.

Jeff from WI on June 30, 2009 at 2:28 PM

Agree, but in the end, I don’t see the left as a whole in this country, of having any sort of ability to carry off a totalitarian state.

They are just too lazy and stupid. The reason Americans are leftists, is basically because (1) they’re woefully misguided (2) they’re complete idiots and (3) they’re full of envy and looking for a handout.

NoDonkey on June 30, 2009 at 1:43 PM

All of that is par for the course. The general rule of thumb is that it takes between 7-8% of the population as a base of fanatic supporters to support a Marxist revolution.

Once the Revolution is underway, of course, the stereotypical moonbats won’t be anybody’s shock troops! Obama plans to get his guard from among the black liberation movement. Sure, only a small percentage of them attend Trinity or Nation of Islam services on a regular basis, but don’t be fooled. There are MILLIONS of black people in America who share the beliefs of Obama and Wright.

And they have fifty years worth of ginned-up rage to work with. All they need is organization. This ACORN crap may seem like small potatoes now, but they dwarf the gaggle of beer-soaked thugs Hitler started out with. Once the government has finished diverting trillions of dollars into that festering pit (and simultaneously knocked the underpinnings out of most of America’s pre-existing institutions) you’ll be amazed what they can accomplish — and not in a good way.

Green Bay used to be called “stinking bay” by the French and the indians because for some reason fish used to beach themselves from Lake Michigan and then rot there. The French and later the British used to consider that assignment as a punishment. Respect the Packers cause of their history, but maybe they stink too.
