CA Dem leader: Why do we allow free speech to terrorize politicians?

posted at 10:11 am on June 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This would be great satire, except that California’s Speaker of the Assembly, Karen Bass, was foolish enough to say it — and believe it.  In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Bass responded to a question about conservative talk radio by calling show hosts terrorists, and openly wondering why we allow people to call politicians and give their opinions (via The Corner):

How do you think conservative talk radio has affected the Legislature’s work?

The Republicans were essentially threatened and terrorized against voting for revenue. Now [some] are facing recalls. They operate under a terrorist threat: “You vote for revenue and your career is over.” I don’t know why we allow that kind of terrorism to exist. I guess it’s about free speech, but it’s extremely unfair.

There’s a lot of stupidity and tyranny locked into those few words.  The First Amendment guarantees the right to petition the government for redress of grievances, even apart from the “free speech” issues Bass casually discards.  Elected politicians are accountable to the people who elect them in a free society.  Politicians do not acquire lordly status when they go to the Assembly, or anywhere else.

Usually, politicians are smart enough to at least pay lip service to getting feedback from their constituents.  Instead, Bass calls them “terrorists” for … what?  Calling their representatives and telling them not to raise taxes even higher, in the state with the sixth-highest per capita tax burden in the nation?  Expressing their opinions?  Telling politicians they won’t get their support if they vote for a tax hike?  That’s democracy, not terrorism, although I’m hardly surprised that Bass can’t tell the difference.

Maybe Bass should embed with our forces in Iraq or Afghanistan to get a sense of what terrorism really means.  On second thought, the men and women on the front lines have it bad enough.

And while we’re looking at that exchange, what happened to Patt Morrison, the LA Times reporter?  Did Morrison not feel that answer worthy of a follow-up — like, “Are you seriously equating dissent with terrorism?”  Or better yet, “Have you lost your mind?”  Morrison appears more interested in promoting Bass than actually conducting an interview.

Beware the politicians who consider dissent terrorism.  They’re either idiotic beyond belief, or tyrants waiting for an opportunity.  Bass might just be both.

The face is irrelevant. It’s the brain that is the problem. These folks are feeling their oats. They think it is alright to come out and speak this stupid stuff. They would never say it out loud before. It’s time to call them on every stupid thing they say, including the president. The Democrats have become lax in presenting who they are. Well, they are tyrants who do not believe in freedom. It’s that simple. They have no place here in the US. It’s time they were defeated so soundly that they won’t be back for a long time. Never let stupid go unanswered. Bush found that out. It’s not always that obvious for some Dems. They are the ones that do not pay attention. Answer everything. Do not let them frame the fight.

Except for inner city politicians…as long as they attack the “enemy”, it doesn’t matter how stupid of statement, as long as it is an attack they are safe.

right2bright on June 30, 2009 at 10:43 AM

At her age, surely she has heard the expression “if ya can’t take the heat, stay the hell out of the kitchen.”

But, as with most Dems, any criticism of what they see as their divine rights is of course viewed as terrorism.

Today she is probably decrying that racist obstructionist US Supreme Court standing in the way of affirmative action.

Over forty years of slow and steady indoctrination through our schools and through community organizers…all of it just below the radar…until today.

The true terrorism hasn’t even started yet…just wait until the next group of czars commissars is given enforcement powers…too many light bulbs? Take ‘m away. Driving a non-hybrid car? Off to the gulag. Registered Republican…that’ll get you a few years in re-education camp. Speak out against The One [president for life] and that will get you a stiff sentence for high treason…if you are lucky.

Sounds far fetched?

Waxman and others calling those who voted against that Cap and Tax Global Warming Climate Change Somethin’ or ‘nuther about the Weather and Energy carbon Bill in Congress traitors….should give you a hint that we are closer than most are willing to admit.

OK…rant off, for now. People like this Karen Bass are just plain stupid…and they get voted into office by even more stupid people…and kept in office by even more stupid people.

Thank you, NEA.

Every time I see a politician making a statement like this, including Phil Donnahue’s earnest attempt to defend Marxist-Leninism on Hannity, I keep telling myself that voters have to see this for themselves.

Considering they started out thinking black people were 3/5s of a person, I guess it’s an improvement.

Jeff from WI on June 30, 2009 at 10:39 AM

1) There were no Democrats when the constitution was signed.
2) The 3/5ths was only when it came to calculating representation in the House of Representatives. It was a compromise, the slave states wanted slaves to count equally with non-slaves. Non-slave states did not want them to count at all.

Oddly enough, using the standard you set, the slave states believed that slaves were 100% people, and the non-slave states believed that they weren’t people.

See how stupid you sound when it the issue is fully explained.

From 1998 Dr. Thomas Sowell

“FAIR” IS ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS concepts in politics. Since no two people are likely to agree on what is “fair,” this means that there must be some third party with power — the government — to impose its will. The road to despotism is paved with “fairness.”

But if ACORN is involved in the census, it will be precisely to ensure that politicians like Bass retain safe seats.

pseudonominus is right, there are lots of conservatives in California. More people voted for George W. Bush in LA County, in 2004, than voted for him in 33 states. I want to change the constitution and add these lines.

The budget will be passed, balanced and on time.

If law makers and the Governor fail to achieve this task,
1. Every one involved in the budget process forfeits their
pay .
2. They receive no compensation/reimbursements in any way
shape or form.
3. They cannot use any government vehicles until such time
that a balanced budget is passed.
4. They are precluded from running for any public office

I would add that her race has little to do with her attitude toward governing except that it probably made her more vulnerable to early indoctrination. A statist is a statist is a statist. That has little if anything has this to do with any other “identity.”

Fortunately or unfortunately, most do not know how subversive statism is. Fortunate because there may yet be hope for some. Unfortunate because Bass and others are terribly lost.

And we wonder why California is broken. What kind of Kool Aide is she drinking?

In the California Legislature, taxes are merely “revenue,” free speech is “terrorism” and smaller increases in spending on “Draconian cuts.”

SOS, SOS, SOS!

It is officially time to fly our flag upside down!

God help us!

I live in CA. its a CHARLIE FOXTROT here.
I am trying to find out how I can use the Initiative process to change the Constitution of Calif.
For years I have seen Sacramento do NOTHING but screw off until the budget needs to be passed then its always late and just an abortion. Then these lazy bastards run for re-election and win.

4. They are precluded from running for any public office
for 5 years after their current term is up.

I think that if we got this into the Ca constitution perhaps we can get it into the US one as well.

That sounds like good stuff to me.

Now it’s up to the people to vote these people back out of office.

Hopefully they will, if not they can only blame themselves for the mess the state is in.

Gunner105 on June 30, 2009 at 11:41 AM

Newsflash: Conservatives are outnumbered here, that’s why things are as f’ed up as they are.

By extension, your comment could be applied to the entire coutry for voting Zerobama into office, and the Dem majority in Congress.

infidel4life on June 30, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Crazy stuff, but what I’m waiting for is a serious attempt to remove the electoral college. THAT will be the sign. Few will buy into removing the term limit on the Presidency, but the electoral college will seem like such a “fair” thing to do so “every vote counts.”

Ther has been much discussion on exactly that. It would make ACORN (CIO)’s job much easier!

Lefties hate the First Amendment

Which is why it’s so critical to protect the Second Amendment.

That day is coming…sooner than any of us imagined.

The woman is obviously too stupid to govern…..except as a democrat.

JIMV on June 30, 2009 at 12:04 PM

More liberal distortion and revisionism regarding the 3/5 compromise. Isn’t our education system just grand?

Reason # 3 to be against affirmative action.

SouthernGent on June 30, 2009 at 12:05 PM

Wow. Just read the entire interview.

My question is why do we allow politicians to speak at ALL? They are supposed to represent the people, not themselves.
Wish I’d never read that.

bridgetown on June 30, 2009 at 12:06 PM

she is so ugly.

moonbatkiller on June 30, 2009 at 12:06 PM

This woman is clear proof we need a civics test to vote or run for office. The ignorant, stupid and uneducated are in office.
