CA Dem leader: Why do we allow free speech to terrorize politicians?

posted at 10:11 am on June 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This would be great satire, except that California’s Speaker of the Assembly, Karen Bass, was foolish enough to say it — and believe it.  In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Bass responded to a question about conservative talk radio by calling show hosts terrorists, and openly wondering why we allow people to call politicians and give their opinions (via The Corner):

How do you think conservative talk radio has affected the Legislature’s work?

The Republicans were essentially threatened and terrorized against voting for revenue. Now [some] are facing recalls. They operate under a terrorist threat: “You vote for revenue and your career is over.” I don’t know why we allow that kind of terrorism to exist. I guess it’s about free speech, but it’s extremely unfair.

There’s a lot of stupidity and tyranny locked into those few words.  The First Amendment guarantees the right to petition the government for redress of grievances, even apart from the “free speech” issues Bass casually discards.  Elected politicians are accountable to the people who elect them in a free society.  Politicians do not acquire lordly status when they go to the Assembly, or anywhere else.

Usually, politicians are smart enough to at least pay lip service to getting feedback from their constituents.  Instead, Bass calls them “terrorists” for … what?  Calling their representatives and telling them not to raise taxes even higher, in the state with the sixth-highest per capita tax burden in the nation?  Expressing their opinions?  Telling politicians they won’t get their support if they vote for a tax hike?  That’s democracy, not terrorism, although I’m hardly surprised that Bass can’t tell the difference.

Maybe Bass should embed with our forces in Iraq or Afghanistan to get a sense of what terrorism really means.  On second thought, the men and women on the front lines have it bad enough.

And while we’re looking at that exchange, what happened to Patt Morrison, the LA Times reporter?  Did Morrison not feel that answer worthy of a follow-up — like, “Are you seriously equating dissent with terrorism?”  Or better yet, “Have you lost your mind?”  Morrison appears more interested in promoting Bass than actually conducting an interview.

Beware the politicians who consider dissent terrorism.  They’re either idiotic beyond belief, or tyrants waiting for an opportunity.  Bass might just be both.

That’s democracy, not terrorism, although I’m hardly surprised that Bass can’t tell the difference.

But she CAN tell the difference.

I’m not a big Ronald Radosh fan, but in his book “Commies” he describes a visit he made with a group of US communists to Cuba.

During the trip, the group visited a hospital/asylum where they noticed the “patients” were well behaved. They found out the was achieved by having each patient undergo a full frontal lobotomy.

(As a point of reference, this occurred shortly after the left championed the release of many held in mental institutions in the US, sending God knows how many out to live in the streets.)

When the US group (I won’t call them Americans) got back to their hotel, some (including Radosh) were horrified about what they observed. But one countered with the claim that there was a difference between communist lobotomies and capitalist lobotomies; the former, of course, desired. The latter…

Sadly, Bass is simply making the same argument.

And they have fifty years worth of ginned-up rage to work with. All they need is organization.

Good luck to Bammy on that one. I maintain organizing the type of people you mention is a fool’s errand. They are where they are precisely because they are undisciplined and stupid. Give them arms and they will either lose them or sell them for drug money.

Besides, once a few get predictably capped by our armed citizenry, the rest will give up, go home and stick their hands out one again.

Slouching towards Gomorrah is a lot more likely than any sort of hard left dictatorship. The left in this country is just too lazy and worthless to compel much of anything, their style is to be dishonest and sneaky as they steal from the American people.

California’s Speaker of the Assembly, Karen Bass is an idiot. The people who vote/voted for her are idiots.

How’s that for free speech?!

How did Patt Morrison, LA Times reporter, not crack up laughing in Bass’ face?

TN Mom on June 30, 2009 at 2:48 PM

Typical California Dreaming. First, we get Boxer (call me Senator) and now this. However, Californians keep electing them, so they may be justified to say whatever they want, without fear of being replaced.

djaymick on June 30, 2009 at 2:48 PM

This says it all. It is what this country has become. Karen Bass isn’t just some uninformed, stupid voter. Stupid voters actually elected her to a position of responsibility.

Considering they started out thinking black people were 3/5s of a person, I guess it’s an improvement.
Jeff from WI on June 30, 2009 at 10:39 AM

Um, actually, that was for the purpose of congressional representation only. The sountherners wanted them considered as full constituents, but compromised with the north at 3/5 or a person. Sounds harsh, but the reality is that slaves were considered to have congressional representation, incipiently at least.

So your remark is actually not fair.

Akzed on June 30, 2009 at 10:41 AM

.
The northerners felt that a slave was better represented by not being represented by a slaver.
.
The master explained that the slaves were only whipped when they asked to be.

TN Mom on June 30, 2009 at 2:48 PM

I think you are using the term “reporter” rather generously. Performing more in the capacity of a publicist, as is all too common these days in the SRM serving the liberals.
The LA Slimes is exceptionally liberal and Madam Speaker represents a District within the greater LA region. Clearly there was no intent to “report,” rather the piece was intended to provide a free propaganda platform to Bass and for Morrison to pretend to have the ‘in’ for political insight.

Note to so many HA posters: LA and the SF Bay area are not representative of our state as a whole. Lots of conservative support out here, but you can see the bias with which we must constantly compete. Orange County still retains some conservative strength. Riverside County as well, with the notable exception of Bono Mack representing the “Stop the H8″ libs in Palm Springs. No doubt she is banking on a lot of the ‘green’ vast solar wastelands and more windmill farms to spring up in her district compliments of the US taxpayers.

FlyoverJ-HawkFan on June 30, 2009 at 1:52 PM

Some of us have older relatives who have built lives in CA for fifty plus years and refuse to move. I’ll not abandon my great-aunt to an institution, so I’ll have to make my stand here.

And for those of you who are fomenting racial hatred here, you’re just as bad as Sower-of-Discord-in-Chief Obama and his pastor are. Blacks aren’t trying to tell you what to do. Leftists are.

baldilocks on June 30, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Once the Revolution is underway, of course, the stereotypical moonbats won’t be anybody’s shock troops! Obama plans to get his guard from among the black liberation movement. Sure, only a small percentage of them attend Trinity or Nation of Islam services on a regular basis, but don’t be fooled. There are MILLIONS of black people in America who share the beliefs of Obama and Wright.

And the are even more who believe in the shed blood of Jesus Christ and his death as propitiation for the sins of ALL human beings. And that He rose on the third day.

NoDonkey on June 30, 2009 at 2:38 PM

Obama is trying to do what Chavez did in Venezuela and what Zelaya is trying to do in Honduras: simply ignore the Constitution altogether, and usurp the electoral process into a perpetual dictator-supporting machine.

Even under the best-case scenario (for him), some form of Gestapo will be a necessity. Theoretically, that might be done with only local applications of force – involving only a few thousand men. We would have an effective dictatorship. As for how “hard” left it becomes, that will only be a matter of time. Once elections are no longer a concern, Obama can go back to boiling the frog — centralizing the rest of the economy, silencing the press, disarming the populous, etc.

Now, I’m not saying that Obama will necessarily be SUCCESSFUL at this. In fact, if you just examine Black Liberation Theology by itself; it’s more like Communism in its infant form than true Stalinism. All it concerns itself with is destruction of the “evil” existing system. It’s pretty darned fuzzy regarding exactly what happens after that.

There is no doubt that Obama is a true believer. And it’s fairly easy for a President to accomplish the first part of the Black Liberation agenda – to destroy the American economy. Exactly how well Obama has thought through what comes next is anyone’s guess.

It’s even possible that Obama hasn’t though the endgame AT ALL. After all, that’s where the Black Liberation theology just sort of breaks down and starts babbling about a “Mother Wheel Spaceship” coming down and creating Utopia on earth. So maybe he’s thinking about destruction and absolutely nothing past that.

All I’m saying is that it’s always foolish to underestimate your opponent.

You tell’em, Baldi!

To those focusing on the irrelevant, how does this help defeat Obama and his anti-American, leftist allies? Such an approach not only does not help, it hurts our cause by sowing discord among our ranks and feeding the Obamanation’s efforts to stigmatize and bury us. If you can’t find it in your hearts to stop focusing on the irrelevant appearances of a person, then at least find the self-discipline to post only about what is relevant: their leftist ideological words and deeds. America needs to stop these people, so please keep your eyes on the prize.

TN Mom on June 30, 2009 at 2:48 PM

Because liberals out here in the Bay Area (and other choice parts of CA) can’t see the forest for the trees. It’s a common sentiment that anything “right-wing” related must be completely fascist and illogical. But what I have found is the majority of liberals have no idea what conservatives even think, let alone why they think it. On the other hand, as many of you know, conservatives know more about liberal beliefs than even most liberals do! That’s why we get the ad hominem attacks as soon as we start spouting what must seem like poison to them: facts! They have nothing to counter it with, so they fall back on words like “terrorist” or “fascist” to describe conservatives.

A quick anecdote: my bro was a typical pie-in-the-sky bay area liberal when he was working for someone else’s company starting 10 yrs ago. He formed his own company about 5 yrs ago, and now is starting to expand. He’s now a fiscal conservative and can actually listen to reason. FOr example, he had heard nothing about the cap & trade bill, and when I described the basics to him the other day he thought it was a good idea to help the environment and energy policy this way. When I gave him the facts on how it would affect business in the US (on top of whole bogus CO2=global warming), he changed his mind in about two minutes to saying this would be a terrible idea.

SO I guess the answer is to give all liberals their own businesses, as long as it’s not a yoga studio or hemp products store (my bro does metal work). Then give them real facts. (if only it was that easy) heh

The question really is, why do we allow ourselves to be terrorized by a bunch of loons who did nothing more than win an election.
She is terrorized by our talk. She can barely suffer it.
We get to be terrorized by their laws and edicts and corruption,,, having our properties seized, our money confiscated through excessive taxation, our business’s destroyed, our children indoctrinated, our religion mocked and assaulted,,, the very breath we exhale has been labeled a pollutant,,, yet she cannot suffer our talk!!
How do you compete with such idiocy??
She can barely suffer our speech,, yet we must suffer their burdens and foolishness and corruption!
We truly could be on the verge of a complete dictatorship.
We are surrounded by fools who just happen to have won the raffle and get to be in charge. It is like being at the mercy of selfish 10 year olds!

JellyToast on June 30, 2009 at 6:33 PM

Exactly. A common liberal refrain is “something needs to be done”.
Not, “I need to do XXXXX”. Someone else needs to do something. Always someone else.
That’s because they’re all for people doing things to help THEM and to shoveling government/private money to THEM.
Let’s face it, in this country (at least up until Obama’s coronation), if you had just a little drive and ambition, you could live pretty well. And probably not have the time to waste on leftwing political movements.
So who’s going to do the actual work? Not the trust-fund millionaires (e.g. Kennedy) and geriatric hippies (your uber rich SF lefties), for sure. They pay servants to wipe their butts in the morning.
The millions who voted for Democrats? They’re waiting for Barack Obama to show up at their doorstep with a bag of gold in his hand, as if he were the new spokesman for Publisher’s Clearinghouse.
You couldn’t get a days worth of work out of those people in a month of Sundays. We have nothing to fear from these sloths.

So this person doesn’t have any original ideas (the left is calling everyone but a real terrorist a terrorist) so that is why she went into politics in the first place so she doesn’t have to come up with original ideas? Because it isn’t necessary to perform or be competent, not like in the private sector, where they expect results. What is California’s unemployment rate 11.4% or something, they are handing out I.O.U.s and this poor excuse for a Government Bureaucrat doesn’t like being called out on being useless? Typical.
