Video: The coup in Honduras was illegal, says Obama

The country’s supreme court disagrees, but oh well. The One hath spoken. Regarding the lip service he pays here to “democratic traditions,” does the fact that Honduras’s congress blessed Zelaya’s ouster and installed Micheletti as president factor at all into the calculus about how democratic this was? What about the fact that Zelaya was organizing his referendum towards anti-democratic ends, as a first step towards installing himself as a Chavez-esque strongman? And since Obama’s so worried about setting “terrible precedents,” how about the precedent of piping up in support of a Chavez stooge instead of simply staying out of this? He goes so far here as to say that Zelaya’s still the president of Honduras, which risks forcing an impossible situation where he’s returned to power despite all other arms of the government — military, legislature, and judiciary — being openly hostile to him. What could go wrong?
After thinking about this for 24 hours, I can’t see any reason for a strong reaction from the United States here except as a way for The One to prove he’s different from all the other yanqui presidents in the past. And if that means he has to side with Hugo Chavez, so be it. Exit quotation from Micheletti: “‘We can’t allow that this government take us to communism or socialism.”

You must not have heard the latest news. That is all being updated with a new oath.
“I, _____ (SSAN), having been appointed an officer in the Army of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of _____ do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservations or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter; So help me God.” (DA Form 71)“I swear by Karl Marx this sacred oath that I shall render unconditional obedience to Dear Leader Barack Obama, the Supreme Ruler of the ACORN Reich, supreme commander of the armed forces, Divine Ruler of all that he surveys and that I shall at all times be ready, as a subservient soldier, to give my life for this oath.” (Emanuel Rahm Form 666)

It really bothers me that Fox News is basing all of their coverage of this issue on Associated Press reports. I can’t believe they aren’t doing any original reporting on such an important event.

It wasn’t a “coup”, bozo. It was the military and the legislative branches executing the lawful decision of the Honduras Supreme Court. Sort of a short-form impeachment.
Personally, I wish the military had given the guy a bullet to the head, which at least would have put to rest the question of whether is he “…still the President.”
guntotinglibertarian on June 29, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Besides, you haven’t answered the point: Why is Ogabe willing to meddle in Honduras but not Iran? The Honduran military immediately handed power to the elected legislature while the Iranian military is busy slaughtering its own people?

If not, I would wonder why they choose the rule of man over the rule of law. But in using language such as the word ‘coup’ in this application, it’s apparent what the answer is. Man is above law. Those who use ‘coup’ automatically accept that it is Zelaya that rules Honduras.
What will it take for Obama supporters for you to realize he sides with tyranny? This has been his only consistency.

Even an ignorant stumble bum occasionally stumbles down the correct path, yet Obama seems to chose the wrong one every time. The evidence is piling up that, although he may be incompetent, he is following a path he’s chosen deliberately.
Ignorance is no longer a credible defense of Obama’s incompetence, IMO.
FloatingRock on June 29, 2009 at 6:35 PM
I’m telling ya, Obama doesn’t like it because he sees himself in this situation in the future… When his time is up and he doesn’t want to go, he wants a precedent to point at to support his actions when he tries to stay in office illegally… ;)

So why does this thread concern you? Because some of the comments hold a grain, if not a whole buckets worth of truth in them?

Dictatorships foster oppression, dictatorships foster servitude, dictatorships foster cruelty; perhaps even more abominable is the fact that they foster idiocy!
Tav on June 29, 2009 at 6:43 PM
This fits with who Obama is.
Obama could not bring himself to support Iranians taking to the streets protesting a corrupt government and fraudulent elections because he will not support, nor will he want anyone else to support Americans taking to the streets protesting his corruption and future fraudulent elections.
He now cannot bring himself to criticize a South American leader who tries to circumvent their constitution by remaining in office longer than he is allowed to,, because he (Obama) will want to do the same thing here in the future.
Obama will always be on the side of tyrants and be against free people. He has to be,, because Obama is a tyrant. Obama wants tyrants to be viewed as true leaders or innocent victims, while the people who demonstrate against them be viewed as tyrannical.

I think you’re right, but it’s still no excuse for Fox News’ failure. If American’s knew as much about it as we do here, they’d be paying more attention. Honduras is a special case. They’re an ally and have just provided the world with an example of check’s and balances in action. We should all envy them in that regard.
But what makes it especially news worthy, and deserving of in depth reporting by Fox News independent of Associated Press, is that Obama is on the wrong side of history. Obama has revealed his hand and Fox News, by not calling him on it, is shirking their responsibility.

I’m once again feeling that nausea that comes with living in bizarro America where a fascist/marxist monster is actually president of the country and the vast majority of Americans are in a catatonic, drooling state of complete stupidity and ignorance.
Meanwhile, the baby-boomer media continue to grovel and crawl before Obama as willing slaves. Journalists around the world have lost their freedom at the point of a gun while American journalists have willingly given theirs away.
In less than six months Obama:
- Attacks private citizens who dare to speak against him (Limbaugh, Hannity and others).
- Seizes private industry like the Mussolini/Chavez admirer that he is.
- Ignores the protestors in Iran while kissing up to the dictator who’s killing them.
- Kisses the ass of every marxist leader in Central and South America.
The reason Obama objects to the removal of Zelaya is because he’s not notably different from Zelaya and Chavez.
But, hey, did you hear Michael Jackson’s dead?!?!?1? Did you see Dancing With The Starz last night?!?! Zoweee! I just bought a iPod! I hate to admit it but many Europeans are exactly right when talking about what s— for brains morons most Americans are.

The Strange Case of Professor Obama and Mr Hussein is a real life drama playing out in the aftermath of the Presidential election of 2008. It is about the dilemma of the American citizen who sees strange dissonances between the new found Messiah, Professor Obama, and the misanthropic Mr. Hussein. It is a vivid portrayal of a split personality, split in the sense that within the same person there is both an apparently good and an evil personality each being quite distinct from the other. In mainstream culture the very phrase “Obama and Hussien” will come to mean a person who’s words are vastly different in moral character from his actions.

Clinton is acting the adult here by not claiming this is a military coup.
As the article points out if it is determined to be a military coup we must cut off funds.
Obama is in a tiff because his plans for 2016 have been blown up.
I’m waiting to see Hillary make her permanent break from the administration over something as big as this. Not sure this particular item is big enough for her to make her play.

If the Honduran congress voted to depose Zelaya, he’s not the president anymore, right?
I realize this doesn’t clear up the issue of whether or not it was alright for the military to remove him from the country. However, I think that would answer the question of whether or not Zelaya is still the president.
