Video: The coup in Honduras was illegal, says Obama

The country’s supreme court disagrees, but oh well. The One hath spoken. Regarding the lip service he pays here to “democratic traditions,” does the fact that Honduras’s congress blessed Zelaya’s ouster and installed Micheletti as president factor at all into the calculus about how democratic this was? What about the fact that Zelaya was organizing his referendum towards anti-democratic ends, as a first step towards installing himself as a Chavez-esque strongman? And since Obama’s so worried about setting “terrible precedents,” how about the precedent of piping up in support of a Chavez stooge instead of simply staying out of this? He goes so far here as to say that Zelaya’s still the president of Honduras, which risks forcing an impossible situation where he’s returned to power despite all other arms of the government — military, legislature, and judiciary — being openly hostile to him. What could go wrong?
After thinking about this for 24 hours, I can’t see any reason for a strong reaction from the United States here except as a way for The One to prove he’s different from all the other yanqui presidents in the past. And if that means he has to side with Hugo Chavez, so be it. Exit quotation from Micheletti: “‘We can’t allow that this government take us to communism or socialism.”

Obama’s seizing property without due process was illegal.
Obama’s breaking bankruptcy law was illegal.
When Obama is held accountable for his illegal activities, I’ll care about what he thinks is legal.

What in the world are Bama and his handlers using for brains? Or is it that any overthrow of a tyrannical leftist is wrong automatically?
My niece is in Honduras, daughter been there a number of times recently and the deposed little man had little chance of winning without Mullahs or Chavez to force him down the throat of the people. He is widely despised and distrusted, obviously for good reason.
Who is feeding the One his “intel”.
It would be hilarious if this was just TV…downright scary as it is. Gun sales may accelerate again.

This POS man just broke a law that he himself helped to write, and we’re supposed to trust that he actually cares about anything legal! Wow…
Keemo on June 29, 2009 at 5:50 PM
The Precedent knows that the Honduran supreme court didn’t have the requisite empathy, which is more important than any silly, written law …
And be very aware that The Precedent is trumpeting referenda over the rule of law, on top of it all. If this doesn’t send the ultimate chill up your spine, nothing will.
This is the product of Harvard Law with some alleged concentration on Constitutional Law. I hope any respect anyonje had for Harvard has been tossed into the trash. This is an academic embarrassment worse than anything I have seen.

Besides, we all know that Our Leader is an expert on Honduran law, and Honduran politics – he being a Community Organizer, who spent a little bit of time in Indonesia.
OhEssYouCowboys on June 29, 2009 at 5:53 PM
Wow, he’s so smart he even knows the laws in Honduras. What a tool. If the supreme court ruled what the guy was doing was illegal and via court order had him removed with the blessing of the legislative body please, tell me what was illegal about it? Besides Obama doesn’t like it.

Daggett on June 29, 2009 at 5:55 PM
Dear Exalted Chosen One (aka: “Dear Leader“),
ALL “coups” intended to topple governments are, by definition, “illegal”. Since this was NOT a “coup”, it was thus not “illegal”.
In fact the moron who was removed from power WAS committing illegal acts, and that is why the Supreme Court of Honduras ordered is removal!
Please go back to not meddling.

Bozo will only meddle in FAVOR of a marxist or a tyrant. You all know he’s returning ambassadors to Venezuela and Syria, right?
dogsoldier on June 29, 2009 at 5:59 PM
Obama is a fine one to talk about illegalities. Did he, or did he not, violate his own law, by firing Inspector Generals?
Perhaps he’s sending the message, that when the same is done to him, for violating the constitution, and trying to declare himself dictator, we’ll all know….”it’s illegal”.
Yo Obama! Bite me!!! When you abide by the Constitution, and the laws….then we’ll talk.

Micheletti can’t, but Bo sure can, and will. The same way Bo tested his campaign to conquer the election in Kenya, he’s now testing his strategy for entrenching socialism and communism in Honduras.
Honduras, gird your loins, bend over, and shake hands with the next world axis, Hugobama.

My guess is Obama is sucking up to Hugo Chavez. It is also possible that he does not know what he is doing.
One thing is obvious, however, unlike Chavez, Zelaya does not control the military.

lorien1973 on June 29, 2009 at 6:04 PM
I can’t watch since I am at work but did he mention what would have been the proper course of action? I had heard on the news this morning that since the vote had been found illegal by legislature and court that Zelaya was going to get the ballots from Chaez. You don’t think they were going to be pre-marked do you?

bill30097 on June 29, 2009 at 5:59 PM
Somehow I get the feeling that the military would not rush to aid the One. He puts or brave men and women at risk by having to wait to engage as in the example in last weeks thread of a pilot asking six times for permission to fire. The policy of having to mirandize enemy combatants upon capture and threating to veto defense funding bills does not bode well for a loyal military.

But its very productive, obviously, to have the US meddle in Honduras? WTF is wrong with your head?
I’ve had it with this pantload President, how the flock did this fool get elected?

He’s already had the mental breakdown, we are experiencing it with him. When can we decontaminate the White House of this carbon contamination.
chemman on June 29, 2009 at 6:11 PM
From what I can tell, Obama is merely echoing the sentiment of his primary foreign policy audience, i.e. Europe, where the situation in Honduras is currently being sold as a “military coup, possibly backed by the CIA to install a pro-US dictatorship”. No mention of the Supreme Court, Parliament, etc. in papers here.
Niko on June 29, 2009 at 6:11 PM
He’s starting to make Jimmuh Carter look good.
But I’m detecting a clear pattern in his foreign policy…if you were a friend and ally of the US in the BM (Before Messiah) era, you are now SOL…If you were a enemy, hey were best buds now. List of nations he’s dissed and thrown under the bus:
1) England
2) Israel
3) Colombia
4) Honduras
New bestest buddies:
1) Khameni’s version of Iran
2) Venezuala
3) Cuba
4) Russia
5) Palestinians
