Video: Press corps now openly laughing at Obama’s backtracking on taxes

It’s a laugh riot, isn’t it? Actually, they might be laughing more at Gibbs’s feeble way of ducking the question than The One’s looming broken promise, but in Gibbs’s defense, what’s he supposed to say? Obama pounded McCain for wanting to pay for health care by taxing benefits, rode into D.C. promising Change, and now he’s going to eat a crap sandwich by reversing himself because it turns out personal charisma doesn’t work on hard economic numbers. So Axelrod and company have to go out and face the firing squad and “explain” via stuttering half-answers why Barry O lied about this last year. It’s a political microcosm of Obama’s economic M.O.: They borrowed political capital by pledging “no new taxes” to win the election and now down the road the bill’s finally come due.
Elsewhere today, Gibbs declared that it’s okay to start judging the success of the stimulus. Over to you, Innocent Bystanders!

“Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase.”
- Barack Obama
I keep quoting him over and over. This is just like Bush 41 saying “No new taxes”
Sink Obama with his backtracking on the no tax increases pledge

Why is Bernie Madoff in prison while Barack Obama is playing golf?
Madoff only scammed a billion. That’s rounding error to Obama.

If he raises any taxes, direct or indirect, on the middle-class, he is gonna get hammered on it.
I’ve never seen a politician so QUICKLY commit such foolish stupid naive acts to make himself a one-termer.
It’s baffling.

Can somebody help me out here? Outside of busting the budget and ramming through socialized medicine and the crushing energy tax…what promises has this liar ever kept? I’m just trying to think of couple (I’m sure there’s a one-off here somewhere).
Has anything he’s said or predicted or promised actually happened or happened the way he said it would?

Hmmmmm, if the price of Gasoline dropping was… Just like a Tax Refund, then why isnt a increase in the price of gasoline just like a tax increase???
doriangrey on June 29, 2009 at 7:41 PM
That’s a large part of how Bush 41 was voted out of office in 1992.
The_Real_JeffS on June 29, 2009 at 7:41 PM
To me Gibbs is the perfect Whitehouse Press Secretary. He comes off like Melman(?) in Office Space. You can’t get past his stupidity and think about his boss Obama… I think this is exactly why he got the job. He doesn’t even know he comes off as an idiot and he seems impervious to insults… Where did he come from?

Fine. It’s an abject failure and all the shovel ready projects in the world won’t help the white collar workers who have lost their jobs since Barry’s fraudulent “recovery” act passed.

Judge we will. The sweetest part is that the judge will come from the left side of the tracks. Cap n Trade electric, clothing, and transportation costs will see to that. Nothing like a jilted lover starting a prairie fire.

“I’ve always been consistent in saying that no family making less than $250 a year will see any form of tax increase. Where did you media dimwits get this 250 grand number, I never said that?”
Bishop on June 29, 2009 at 7:44 PM
The reason it didn’t work for HW is that HW had a political base that actually cared about that crap and would vote for Perot and split the party. Obama doesn’t have that problem.
Lehosh on June 29, 2009 at 7:44 PM
If you pay for electricity then your bills will “necessarily skyrocket” but it won’t be a tax. Cap & Trade will be something you can report on for years. You can do reports like why did the travel industry crater? Why is gasoline $9 a gallon? Why is a loaf of bread $12? What happened to the fruit? But of course these higher prices are not a result of Cap & Trade. Hey America is reducing it’s CO2 emissions and exporting jobs to China but at least you are not paying higher taxes.

Limerick on June 29, 2009 at 7:46 PM
It’s not a tax. It’s a fee, just like the ATM fee, or the annual fee with a credit card. It’s simply not a tax. And it’s voluntary. If you don’t want to pay the fee, you don’t have to. You can always light and heat your home with whale oil or coal gas or wood. Voluntary.
Just ask Harry.

“A follow up to that, Mr. Gibbs? What ‘process’ are you referring to?
“And if, at the end of the process, it turns out that there will be a tax increase on people making $250K or less/yr., then what?

I’ve been thinking about this a fair bit. I can’t decide whether he’s soooo arrogant that he actually thinks he will be able to survive this politically, or whether he is such a rank ideologue that he’d rather ram through a lot of structural changes that will be irreversible than have a second term.
