Sanford: I feel like Jimmy Stewart in “It’s a Wonderful Life”

posted at 9:40 pm on June 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

Yeah. Remember the end of that movie, where George sneaks away from the Christmas festivities to shtup his Argentine mistress on the back porch?

Also, evidently God himself wants Sanford to remain in office lest it deprive us of important lessons about pride or something.

Dude. It’s time. Click the image to watch.

Jimmy Stewart was not God, he was not perfect, but he was one fine human being. He has made this nation proud by his self-less service in the military. What a gift to this nation he was via his movies. He also loved his family tremendously.

Scumbag Sanford, you owe this nation an apology for keeping your name in the news, for humiliating your lovely wife, for hurting your family and friends, for embarrassing the charming state of South Carolina, and for defiling the name of one of our most beloved national treasures, Jimmy Stewart. Resign, go to Argentina, and try to apologize daily to those adorable children you have!

clnurnberg on June 29, 2009 at 10:25 PM

What an asshole. In Its a Wonderful Life, Jimmy Stewart played a character who made sacrifices for others. In this case, Sanford betrayed the trust of others to satisfy his own, uniquely romantic urges. Fine, just leave the keys on your desk and get the hell out of town. You had some sort of noble love…so did I, when I saw RR in the hallway when I was 18.

This assclown compounds the fact that he betrayed his constituency and party for some Argentinian hoo-da — by comparing himself to one of the most moralistic characters of cinematography. Nice. Cyniciscm that I expect more from Barack than from a member of my party. But you know what, Mark, do whatever you heart tells you. I am sure South Carolina supports loving cheaters like yourself.

“One thing making everyone so mad, myself included, are the clips being played of Governor Sanford publicly blasting former President Clinton for his affair with Monica Lewinsky. It looks horribly hypocritical. And it is. We have to stop requiring that our politicians live at such a high level of moral superiority, as if they are infallible creatures.”

Ummm……… Meghan McCain says it is (at least partly) our fault for unreasonably expecting elected officials to have qualities like honesty, fidelity and integrity. Crap. Now I feel that not only have I been unfair to Gov. Sanford, but I’ve let Meghan down. I was just worried — and apparently unnecessarily so — that if a man was willing to lie to his wife and kids that he might not always act in the best interests of the persons he was was elected to represent.

Jeff from WI on June 29, 2009 at 10:30 PM

suzyk on June 29, 2009 at 10:13 PM

If I may…there were at least 3 crimes/misdemeanors here:

1) He was unfaithful to his wife (even if separated, they were still “working on it”).

2) He was AWOL. He left the country, without ever handing over his duties to the Lt. Governor (for the obvious reason that it would raise questions about point 1). He remained incommunicado during the entire time…during this period, the state had no executive leadership at all.

3) He admitted he took these nookie trips before on tax payer money…says he’ll pay it back, but that’s not the point!

In addition, he explicitly stated that he just wasn’t into the job anymore…what an insult to who put him in office!

He hurt a lot of people who believed in him and he damaged conservatives at a time when we could least afford that damage…

And now he’s a running Oparah special…oh, and he really wants the job after all now. Get the hell out!

It’s time for him to admit he messed up and pay the piper.
He is clinging to something that doesn’t exist anymore, his integrity, and thinks that by staying in office it will be restored. Problem is he betrayed the people just as much as he did his wife and children. No matter what happens there is going to be pain for everyone and he needs to deal with that first.
