Video: House holds moment of silence for Michael Jackson

No, as far as I know, Neda and the victims of the Iran crackdown never got one of their own — but they did get a resolution of support, so never mind that comparison. What’s more irritating here, that the House would interrupt national business for this or that JJJ would have the stones to pay tribute to the “grace” and “mercy” of a guy who was accused of child molestation more than once and was known to pay $20+ million settlements in hush money to his accusers? Atheist bonus points to Junior for framing it as an “if there is a God” question, oblivious as he is to the implications for that subject if one believes Michael was “blessed” with a penchant for kiddie-fondling. Like Treacher says, it’s a good thing those cherubs have wings; they’re going to need them.
As I write this, the websites of CNN, FNC, ABC, and NBC are still in full banner mode. The only outlet not smoking the Jacko cracko is CBS. Thank god it’s Friday. Click the image to watch.

Let me be the first to call for March being designated as “Michael Jackson History Month!”
Star20 on June 26, 2009 at 4:56 PM
Contacted both Senators hope it does some good . But can someone explain how MJ is getting more reverence and coverage than the Pope? WTH A moment of silence HuH? I`m not hating on MJ because I loved his music and am sorry for his loss. I choose to hope he was innocent of wrong doing and to be honest will never know for sure. Our Country is under siege and our rights , income and peace of mind are getting stolen from us right before our eyes. Can someone please remind the News channels what we expect from them. This asylum we now live in is driving myself and just about everyone I know to drink!
LSUMama on June 26, 2009 at 4:56 PM
I do, but I find it truly strange that he is singled out by the House of Representatives for a moment of silence.
Maybe you didn’t live through the seventies, but I can tell you, Farrah Fawcett had a huge impact on young people too. And while she stunk up the screen as an actress at first, she really found her craft. No moment of silence for her, however…and that’s fine with me, but then why is the House honoring someone who was likely a child molester?
He was a great entertainer and one of the best at what he did, but she was a great American beauty and a very good actress.
capitalist piglet on June 26, 2009 at 5:01 PM
The house has time to mourn a child molester but not enough time to read bills that are going to destroy America? How pathetic!
pitter43 on June 26, 2009 at 3:55 PM
UHHUH!

No problem.

Uh. She’s white. ?
Key West Reader on June 26, 2009 at 5:05 PM
I feel sadness when anyone dies. Did he contribute more positives to our society than my friend’s grandson who burned to death from an IED explosion in Iraq, while rescuing comrades? No. He led a superficial life marked by superficial contributions when compared to many in our history who did not receive a fraction of this attention when they died.
a capella on June 26, 2009 at 5:05 PM
Yeah just look who is around the podium. I call it the new Powell Doctrine – as long as he is a brother he is good enough for me.
dpierson on June 26, 2009 at 5:07 PM
A moment of silence for the death of morals and ethics in the US House and Senate. When a child molesting pedophile freak show contestant gets more attention than bills spending 100 billion dollars being read first this country is in deep doodoo. (I also include Barney “Ballpark” Franks in the following description.)

Perhaps the American culture has descended to the modern equivalent of that prevailing during the reign of the Roman emperor Commodus. Pelosi should have held her global warming vote yesterday and it would have passed unnoticed.
Annar on June 26, 2009 at 5:13 PM
They should have asked for a moment of silence for Halle Berry, as well. She’s not dead, but she is a sister and she’s hot.

Ghetto Politics at its finest
conservador on June 26, 2009 at 5:15 PM
OK… after the endorphins of my run kicked in…
I have to change my stance on this…. Michael Jackson is a perfect example of the Generation Xs aspirations…
Fame, with no substance… glitz with no guts…
Effeminate to the extreme… not a good example of MANhood.
All about FAME….
Disfuntional family….
Bought his way out of trouble more than once…
Was so into appearance that he destroyed his face…
Was so worried about color that we could no longer tell he was black…
and… left this world owing 400-500 MILLION DOLLARS… thus leaving his children penniless…
Yep… Good example for the Congress to acknowledge… such a good example…
Romeo13 on June 26, 2009 at 5:19 PM
Hey how about a national day to honor all child molesters. These people in congress have no clue about the real world.99% of them would not last a day working in any fast food rest.
thmcbb on June 26, 2009 at 5:23 PM
No comment from the House on whether or not to lower the flags???
Mouse1 on June 26, 2009 at 5:27 PM
See this is what Sanford was really up to. They offed MJ so now the spotlight is off of Obama/Iran situation. What about the Argentine Chick? Payment. Brokered through Hugo.

What wonderful “leadership” we have.

What’s the difference between Michael Jackson and Neil Armstrong?
Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon….. and Michael Jackson had sex with underage boys.
Mr. Joe on June 26, 2009 at 5:32 PM
The cause of death was food poisoning in the Michael Jackson autopsy.
They found two 12 year old nuts in his mouth.
What’s the difference between a grocery bag and Michael Jackson?
One is white, dangerous for kids to play with and made out of plastic
The other carries groceries
Mr. Joe on June 26, 2009 at 5:33 PM
Give me a break!
jorb on June 26, 2009 at 5:39 PM
Revisionists. Anything for a minority vote.
Congress fell another peg in my estimation.
“Just how low can they go?”
Michael Jackson’s perversions were complete.
By his own volition, that is his legacy.
The world’s greatest artists don’t demand to be the end all. Michael Jackson was not King Tut ready to slay all of his followers to be buried with him. There are always others, just like Olympic winners that keep getting their records broken by up and coming generations. Schade, the extent his perversions corrupted youth around the world.

LMAO
Scott Ott? Iowahawk?
Wait, Michael Jordan is dead? Oh.. it’s just some assclown who did a couple of dance moves and had a hit album once. Boo-hoo.
How are they taking the news in Tokyo, btw?

Ok, I’m as much a fan of Off the Wall and Thriller as the next person, but the overwhelming coverage is pretty embarrassing.

This is an opportunity to have the nations first Muslim State funeral. It would be a nice gesture to those aggrieved in the world.
BL@KBIRD on June 26, 2009 at 5:48 PM
The house congressional black caucus honors a black man who tried all his life to turn himself into a white woman and molested children.
Yep, these people should be respected. Right. When does the revolution start, I’m over this s*#@.

simplesimon on June 26, 2009 at 6:29 PM
Ed McMahon was a Marine fighter pilot during WWII. He returned to active service for Korea and flew there as well. If any dead celebrity deserves a moment of silence, then Ed is the man.
MJ was one weird, sad-ass, SOB. Once again, our culture’s priorities are all f*#ked up.
yobobbyb on June 26, 2009 at 6:30 PM
The Jacko tribute ended with an honorary crotch grab toward the American flag but the Obammy “news” networks and C-SPAN edited it out.

Wow, where “Keepin it real, keeps it real.” Pathetic. It’s not like they aren’t worthless enough already (politicians in general). “Surely there must be a way that we can screw the public more and show how TRULY incompetent we really are.”

I move for a Decade of Silence from Congress – 10 years of no new laws.
peski on June 26, 2009 at 6:42 PM
A minute of silence for Michael Jackson, but not for Farah Fawcett?
Of course there is a difference.
She screwed Majors and he screwed minors.
uptight on June 26, 2009 at 6:43 PM
So Michael Jackson had a stroke in the children’s ward of the hospital, more than once, and this is a flag half-staff moment? I’ll go to hell for that pun.
hot-heir on June 26, 2009 at 6:44 PM
Are most of the members here also members of Free Republic?
I can’t tell the difference and if I’d known that, I would not have registered. I’m really young and I don’t like scary sites.
fastestslug on June 26, 2009 at 6:51 PM
It is amazing, but people are acting as though a family member died.
Quite astonishing to me. I can’t imagine seeing him during the trial and NOT realizing that he would be dead soon. His addiction was screaming at the world.
AnninCA on June 26, 2009 at 7:00 PM
I heard they are going to melt down all the plastic in Michael Jackson to make Legos.
That way, kids can play with him for a change.
Right_of_Attila on June 26, 2009 at 7:14 PM
For the reverse picture? Check out the Palin jokes on progressive sites.
There is absolutely no difference. Trust me. They all have a lot more in common than they think.
AnninCA on June 26, 2009 at 7:24 PM
I know what you mean but there are nice conservatives and there are nice liberals. I just need to find a site with nice conservatives who aren’t scary and make me feel unsafe. I expected to be threatened or called names so thank you for not doing so. I’m only 17 and hopefully I will never become ugly or bitter.
fastestslug on June 26, 2009 at 7:29 PM
Spoken like a truly uninformed libtard.
The guy sang a few songs and danced well dozens of years ago. He more recently also diddled little boys and hung his own young son out a window.
What an enormous cultural icon, fully deserving of the media overkill we’ll have to endure for the next 10 weeks.
Next, they’ll be renaming Pennsylvania Avenue in DC to Jacko Way, or is the pending name change currently reserved for DuhWon?
Farrah and Ed, please rest in peace. You are not forgotten.
Sweet_Thang on June 26, 2009 at 7:36 PM
I guess they didn’t have much to do today, like read the cap and tax bill, if they can waste time on that freak.

The LOrd took out country away when he allowed a Commie Terrorist Loving Scumbag to become President and have a Corrupt Scummy Commie DEM Senate and House. He DID bless us by taking one more attacker of children away. (Actually 2 if you count Tiller, and I do)
Jeff from WI on June 26, 2009 at 8:35 PM
Seriously, I think the fact that I’ve watched society let him treat these children horribly, subject them to years of his drug abuse, dangle them dangerously, make them wear masks, and nothing can be done?
Frankly, Gloria whatshername who is viewed as a liberal nut lawyer is the ONLY person who tried to fight for those kids.
They will be better off now.

Even I, your local feminist, would not dare to compare the two.
I think, just personally, that the difference in how people are reacting should explain a lot of the political stuff.
She started off looking a bit cheesy, didn’t she. Even her best work wasn’t really academy award stuff.
But, then, as we followed her life, respect grew. And she has a kid in prison, even.
But nobody is questioning her mothering.
That tells me that people “get” her.
Then, we see her enter this final stage. And respect grew.
I personally hope I follow her path, not Jackson or others who collapse in the face of challenge.
Maybe that’s an unfair comparison. The pressures were clearly different.
But I’ll still admire her way more than him, any day of the week.
AnninCA on June 26, 2009 at 9:01 PM

I must be odd. I think I was too busy when Thriller was released. My son was that age. Wow, he went nuts over it.
I actually took time to watch it yesterday, out of respect.
I was so bored. LOL*
I felt guilty, but that was my sincere reaction:
Boredom.

He had three children to raise and OD’ed on Dope. I refuse to celebrate that. He left them orphaned and in debt. I refuse to celebrate that. Is that Black culture? It was self indulgence and irresponsibility. I refuse to celebrate that. He failed to manage Adult life or his responsibilities to his children. I refuse to celebrate that.

Jeff from WI on June 27, 2009 at 7:26 AM
“World’s Most Beloved Pedo” dies, probably of his own hand: Moment of silence on the floor of The House.
People butchered on the streets of Iran simply for demonstrating for basic human rights by the wretched thug squads of the ruling regime: Just silence…
SuperCool on June 27, 2009 at 9:23 AM
Apparently the autopsy was “inconclusive”, so maybe he’s not really dead?
Anyway, I agree with SuperCool, that he had an assisted exit, because he was about to go on a return-from-the-grave tour to try to erase $600M in debt, and probably just decided to take a side door. They haven’t interviewed the personal cardiologist who was on scene yet, either. Ya think he might know something?
Finally, this moment of silence was the most productive of this congress, since they were prevented from more spending and malfeasance for 60 seconds. More, please.
virgo on June 27, 2009 at 12:32 PM
I agree! As Walter Williams once said, “We should pay them $1,000,000 each to go back home and just stay there.” After all Congress is only required to meet one day a year.

rlongstrat on June 27, 2009 at 4:54 PM
I guess I must have missed it when they held their moment of silence for Major Kevin Jenrette the second soldier from the little town of Lula, Georgia, population 2347, to die in the Middle East since the beginning of the war, a huge sacrifice for such a small town. Two other Georgians also gave their lives in this same IED incident. But, all Major Jenrette and his compatriots did was pay the ultimate price for their country; and I guess that’s not as important as being a strange, to say the least, multi-millionaire who lived in Neverland with little children in his bed…
DonnaC on June 27, 2009 at 6:13 PM
Huckabee, a real Christian just did a tribute of sorts to him.
I hope Allah posts it.
AprilOrit on June 27, 2009 at 8:11 PM
Well, I had something nasty typed here, but with due respect to the contribution to the art he gave thats all fine and nice but a moment of silence was not necessary. Other celebraties died this week and what about them?
I’ll stand by Jeff from WI a few entries up. Jacko was a sick dude. If he didn’t die this week he surely would have died on the tour. Now, what about all the tickets people bought? Maybe he knew he was dieing. His being so frail and so delicate, uh, no. Pitty party has been over. He had a doctor living there and a hospital within spitting distance for a reason. I appreciate his contribution to the world don’t get me wrong, but he was screwed up upstairs and all the Liz Taylors didnt do squat but cover for his ass. Sounds like a President we seem to have right now too.
johnnyU on June 27, 2009 at 10:44 PM
How many Top 10 hits did they have?
On the other hand, how many little boys did they molest?
Rest in piece, Michael. The little boys you won’t be able to molest, sure will.
NoDonkey on June 28, 2009 at 12:27 AM
I’m finding it hard to comment without breaking my own wish to not disrespect the dead*. I can understand why the huge coverage, because he did influence people worldwide.
What I’m having difficulty with is why the fawning and turn-news-stations-into-MTV (Michael Tele Vision) coverage and “updates” to tell viewers this or that relative is sad. I’m quite sure Neda’s parents are sad, but I don’t hear much wailing over their eviction or her father’s forced scripted appearance on TV.
Honor him, fine. But let’s get a little perspective here. One person who publicly admitted he likes to sleep with little boys and give them wine usurping a major country’s uprising and subsequent mass massacre and arrests is a disgrace by any yardstick.
Uuuuffff this is certainly not the first episode of proof the world has been turned on its head.
*There are exceptions, e.g. Saddam, etc.
