Video: Boehner slaps down Waxman, filibusters cap and trade; Update: Bill passes, 219-212; eight GOPers are the difference; Update: GOP defectors named; Update: One defector considering Senate run

Yeah, I know: Technically there’s no filibuster in the House, but the majority and minority leaders are typically given great latitude in terms of how long they can speak. Enter Waxman, the genius behind the 300-page amendment no one’s read, wanting to know just how great that latitude is. High drama as the answer comes from Democrat Ellen Tauscher, presiding over the session.
How long can Boehner keep talking tonight? Stay tuned. Click the image to watch.
Update: The filibuster’s over and the final 15-minute vote is in progress. With nine minutes left, it’s 193-183.
Update: 219-212, with eight Republicans — the difference between passage and defeat — defecting to vote yes. The boss is already hunting around for their names. I hope they got a sweet deal from Pelosi because talk radio is about to make their lives very, very difficult.
Update: Inhofe predicts cap and trade will die in the Senate, which is probably true. I wonder if that made the bitter pill easier to swallow for those eight Republicans.
Update: The boss has the names:
Bono Mack
Castle
Kirk
Lance
LoBiondo
McHugh
Reichert
Smith (NJ)
Update: An epitaph from Vodkapundit: “Never have so few stolen so much from so many to achieve so little.”
Update: If you’re looking for a lightning rod among the elite eight, Mark Kirk is probably the one. He’s considering running for Obama’s old Senate seat next year. Memo to Kirk: Reconsider.
Update: A good point from Goldfarb while we’re busy obsessing over the eight GOP turncoats: What about the 50 Democrats who voted no? They’ve earned the ire of liberals needlessly, given that the bill’s destined for likely death in the Senate.

Eh. Mark Kirk wasn’t going to win anyway. Lisa Madigan polls ahead of him and she is more than likely going to run for the Senate. That seat is just a lost cause for Republicans.

She claims to be against it and yet she says this.
That is a misrepresentation. It is WELL MORE than a tax Bill. It is a business regulation bill with far reaching consequences.
And AnninCA says she voted for McCain too. And if you believe that, when Palin is against late term abortion, then I have a bridge to sell you.
I was witness to AnninCA’s trolling the PUMA site “No Quarter”. If she was indeed a PUMA, who voted for McCain as she claims, then why did she annoy so many people over there? They had to chase her away.

I just got this from the Tea Party Patriots and am passing it on:
Dear Tea Party Patriots,
Sometimes the call to duty comes in the middle of the night. This is one of those times. And we apologize for the short notice, but you’ve spoken loud and clear, and demanded action.
Since sending the email asking you what you wanted to do about passage of the Cap and Trade bill approximately 3 hours ago, I have received thousands of responses. All are demanding action, and all are outraged that the House of Representatives passed the Cap and Trade bill, which will cost each family almost $2,000 per year in additional expenses through increased energy prices across all sectors. Patriots across the nation are telling us it’s time to take to the streets. We are in full support of your clearly expressed opinion and are here to assist.
To paraphrase one gentleman in the East on a conference call tonight, we need to lean out of every window and scream that we’re mad as hell and not going to take it anymore! And we need to scream until everyone is screaming with us.
THIS BILL PUNISHES EVERY AMERICAN FAMILY.
Today you were scammed by the House of Representatives, and despite the fact that you shut down the phones of virtually every member of the House, and barraged them with millions of emails telling them this was against your will, they ignored you and voted for another bill which they haven’t even read. The madness needs to stop and we need to stop the Senate from passing the bill.
Tomorrow, because you have demanded it…we take to the streets.
Take to the Streets to Protest the Cap and Trade Passage in the House
Date: June 27, 2009
Time: Noon until – as long as it takes.
Place: State Capitol; or Federal Building in your City, County or Parish
LIST YOUR EVENT AT http://WWW.TEAPARTYPATRIOTS.ORG
Please go to http://www.teapartypatriots.org and list your event. Please try to coordinate with others you see posting events there. If there is already an event in your area, please plant to attend that event, and / or volunteer to help that organizer. This is about coordination, not competition. We need to send a message to the politicians.
Bring signs, bullhorns, and your usual good behavior. It’s imperative that we shock the politicians and press by being there in large numbers, but we want to make sure that we maintain our reputation by not causing any damage or destruction.
We wrote and asked what you are willing to do about it…and you answered, by the thousands…you said you wanted to take it to the streets. Now it’s time for you to spread the message. The time is short, but we can make it happen.
We believe that the Senate will bring the Cap and Traitor bill to the floor on the sixth or seventh of July. We need to send a forceful message to the Senators that we will not tolerate passage of the ACES act in the Senate.
You are the patriot heroes of a true grass roots movement. We asked, and you told us loud and clear what you wanted to do. You told us it’s time to light a grass fire and hit the streets tomorrow?
We apologize for the late notice. Your patriotism in standing up to your government is appreciated, and serves as a powerful testament to the founders of this great nation.

Someone else is to and he’s a conservative: Dan Profit http://www.proft2010.com/ I know very little about him but he’s already doing better than Kirk in my book.
I called Kirk’s campaign office a while ago and invited him to call me back. I let him know we won’t support him for anything even if he’s the only choice.

Kirk has not made a decision to run for the Senate (more likely) or Governer (less likely). I do not think he can make this decisions since he has been assimulated into Washington DC. He is SCARED to run for senate, lose the race, and be removed from Washington. This vote tells me that he will run for re-election for his congressional seat. Staying in Washington is his number one goal.

Kirk will probably lose as governor too. That state’s basically controlled by Chicago as far as I’m concerned. Jesse Jackson, Jr. and Mayor Daley could go on a shooting spree and they would still be re-elected.

We the People are VERY, VERY angry!! We ALL know the true cost of your vote!! We ARE coming for ALL of you!! YOU WORK FOR US!! You voted for a massive 1,300 page bill that YOU NEVER READ!! You voted for the largest tax hike EVER!! You voted for the largest expansion of government EVER!! The 1,300 page bill, that you never read, puts government in control of an additional(at best), 20% of this country’s economy!! You will NOT be given another chance!! We will ALL put our last, thin, tax weakened dollars into the campaigns of YOUR opponents!! It matters NOT to us whether there is an R or a D after their name!! It matters NOT to us which part of this great country you run in, because we are ALL in the United States of America!! We will boycott any product, service or business that run their ads with media/news outlets that are not doing the job of investigative reporting. We will close, transfer or cash out financial accounts of all kinds, we’ll shift investments and roll over retirement accounts, IRA’s, 401k’s, ect., all in an effort to keep our money from finding its way into YOUR campaign via their contribution! You may allow your “leader” to decide your vote, BUT We The People decide our own!!
Every day I wake up and tell myself that this Administration, this Congress, this Senate, their cronies and the state run media can not possibly get any worse, until they do. Every night I fall asleep aware of the real fear I have for my children and the country we will leave them, but find comfort in knowing millions and millions of others also feel that fear, but ,like me, they also feel a fast rising intensity of the spirit that will lead us through, what we know in our heart comes.

I did not agree with everything McCain said or did, but thus far Obama is looking a lot scarier to me than McCain ever could. And as for McCain going out of his way to assure that Obama was not dangerous…that is just weird. If he had said that Obama was some manchurian candidate people would have just thought it was desperate negative campaigning and either mocked him for it or used it against him.
The media, the socalled press were the ones who should have been dogging Obama’s trail and doing their job of talking about who Obama really was.

The part about having to bring one’s home up to eco-standards before selling it is what’s causing nightmares for my two beloved aunts at the moment. Sisters and best friends for life, they’ve lived together in a big century-old house for many decades, but are getting to the age at which they are thinking of moving to a two-bedroom condo; and since both of them recenty retired, they are on fixed incomes and won’t be able to maintain the property very well (painting, repairs, etc.) for too many more years.
So now, I guess, if they decide to sell it, they’ll have to spend a lot of their reduced income to get it ready. And then they’ll have to face higher capital gains taxes, I guess, if they are able to sell it.
Well, my family will try to help — but good grief, how many millions of other people will be in similar straits?

jwp1964 on June 27, 2009 at 7:47 AM
Yes, it is sane. And it’s not a question of whether it “will work”. It is the only avenue left available. The federal government has gone far beyond its bounds and its actions emperil all of the member states. The solution is to leave.
Huh? What does that mean and why would I care about Lincoln’s thoughts on the matter?
Er … why would “voters everywhere” need to get behind secession? Only those in states that understand what freedom is and what our Founders intended need to get behind it. Interestingly, that will include the energy states (except for CA – but, while CA has energy, no one is allowed to get it or use it) and will leave nothing but leech states that will have to import 100% of their energy.
Well, that’s good. Of course neither of those issues (the tax or the slush fund) address the real problem with this bill. But, it’s nice to know that he’s not as much of a moron about crap&trade as he was for the duration fo the campaign.
The truth is the truth. All McCain had to say was that the guy was a socialist, which was very clear for a long time. And that is exactly the entree that the guy at one of McCain’s town halls gave him – calling the idiot messiah a “socialist” – which McCain went out of his way to assure the guy was wrong. This is not calling BHO a Manchurian candidate (which he also clearly is). I was not requesting that McCain show some brains, just a minimal amount of integrity and honesty. Even O’Reilly called BHO a socialist, and after the whole Joe The Plumber event, there was no doubt about BHO’s socialism (though BHO was far, far worse than a run-of-the-mill socialist). And the fact is that BHO was an extremely dangerous person, in many ways. McCain sucked. I voted for him and encouraged others to, but McCain was working against me.
That’s true, but they became the neo-Pravda. McCain didn’t bother fighting back against that very dangerous development in our country. That should have alarmed him more than anything. But, he didn’t really seem to be bothered too much by it. He was too worried that Palin might open her mouth and say something that conservatives agreed with.

I’m in disbelief that 8 “Republicans” could vote for a bill such as this which infringes so greatly on free market enterprise and individual liberty and seeks to retard economic growth in this country. What’s next? The “Equalization of Opportunity Bill”?
And what of these notorious eight? Have we considered the possibility that our ranks have been infiltrated? I don’t even say this in jest. In all seriousness, what is to stop a Leftist from entering Republican politics and keeping the nature of his true political beliefs concealed until key moments such as this? I say we purge our ranks! This was a test of loyalty and clearly these 8 failed. Now, we must make them suffer the consequences!

I was floored to read of Kirk’s defection. He has talked about running for His Most High Obamaship’s old seat, now being kept warm by Roland “Tombstone” Burris. Burris is extremely vulnerable if he runs, and the repubs at least had a shot, albeit not a good one, of picking up the Senate seat.
Kirk lost most of the support he might have had from Conservatives in this state (note I didn’t say Republicans). I fear the state of Illinois will continue to slip deeper into the morass of political nepotism that runs this state.

its painfully obvious that the republican party is NOT a conservative party, rather it is a moderately liberal party with a conservative element. conservatives are an embarressment to people like powell, frum, mccain, etc.
mccain was not a ‘viable candidate’ he was the pick of the powers that be in the republican party. he reflects the party…which is not conservative. we’ve gone over all the issues ad naseum, but he was very similar to obama, just a little less…and thats been the story of the repoublican party for a very long time…reagan was an anomoly.

Secession has to be a viable option, it IS a viable option and always has been, without it there would be literally nothing the United States federal government couldn’t do to free men.

Wait a minute here, turncoats, grab the pitchforks, RINOS, etc. etc. Yet last October when Palin was asked if she supported Cap and Trade her answer was “I do, I do”.
Never heard the outrage then, what’s up with that?

Bullshiite; if there is one place you won’t find blind, lockstepping, virtual obeisance to politicians it’s here at HA.
If you were actually around here last summer and fall, which I doubt, you would have found plenty of detractors for any comments such as the above. Try harder.

I don’t know what else to tell you, Bernanke admits the fed caused the great depression…Friedman said it long ago…and he is very rarely wrong about economics.
yes, the government DID cause the great depression. just as they caused this latest housing bubble and economic problems.

Did you drink last night as I suggested?
It did wonders for me. I got a 12 break from having to think about those despicable RINO’s.

his email response: thank you for sharing your concern.
i cannot wait to campaign against him.

All politicians cease being “our own kind” when they choose their seat at the Elite Country Club , reaching across the aisle, and maintaining the status quo over defending the Constitution and protecting the freedom, rights, and property of their constituents. Again, we need to burn down the phone lines and clog up the e-mail in boxes of the Senate between now and their vote.

What she doesn’t understand is that McShanesty was/is so out of touch he couldn’t/wouldn’t articulate the message that Americans wanted to hear. He left that to Ochimpy and he took advantage of it. Had he understood rank & file Americans, he would have spoken to their hearts and probably brought out the Americans that sat on their asses on Nov 4 out of a feeling of helplessness.

Here’s the list of NC reps:
voting YES: Butterfield, Etheridge, Miller, Price, Shuler(!), Watt
Voting NO: Coble, Foxx, Jones, Kissell(!), McHenry, McIntyre, Myrick
Kissell’s my rep. I called yesterday and when the staffer said he’d vote NO, I expressed my gratitude. Now, if we could just get him to vote the right way on Obamacare….
Shuler – what a disappointment! There go his Blue Dog credentials.

Pelosi et al has some damned nerve!! Does this bill cover the 300 million tons of garbage flushed through the sewers in San Francisco into the ocean? All of it non-biodegradable swirling around in one area of the Pacific. Funny how this doesn’t get a mention anywhere.
elclynn on June 27, 2009 at 8:34 AM
At least you got a response. I sent a scathing email to Bachmann earlier this month about the GOP’s paltry response to the Ogabe Budget and never received so much as an acknowledgment.
But when I send her (and others) congratulatory or laudatory emails, they can’t wait to answer back and send a reminder for campaign donations.
It’s getting to the point where I need to remove myself from the grid as much as possible and be done with all of them.

Bullshit my ass, when she said that all the people here could talk about was how she kicked Bidon’s ass. When I brought her answer up about cap and trade, nothing but silence and a few cracks directed towards me.

I just love me some 8 turncoat goopers. Memo to gop…remember when DeLay kept his caucus unified? Now you guys can’t even herd your sheep. I just love me some smell of gop civil war in the morning. Another memo to gop…kick those 8 dirty traitors out of the party, my Democratic Party would love to have them. Did the gop tent just grow smaller before our very eyes? Rightwing radio OWNS the gop. Rightwing radio is the master to the slave gop. Elections have consequences.

If you haven’t noticed, there is a pretty good mix of Palin fans, Palin detractors and Palin lukewarm supporters here at HA. If you got a tepid response and a personal attack from your comment, you must have been posting at 3am on a Tuesday morning.

If the GOP were Conservative, the party would have the upper hand now, because your Socialist President is starting to have a meltdown. The Cap and Tax Bill has not passed into law yet. It barely passed the House and the Senate is set to vote it down. We’re so glad you stopped by, though. Now come out of the basement. Mom’s got your Count Chocula ready and cartoons are on.

Well put.
It was obvious that he had a problem with understanding the public after his shamnesty was so roundly smacked down, in a very nasty fight (from shamnesty’s side), and he didn’t do the honorable thing by dropping out of the Presidential primary. And then, to pull that deal with Huckabee to get Romney out was just low – whether people like Romney or not.
And even with everything that happened, all McCain had to do was pound on Fannie and Freddie and the dems’ major culpability in the whole credit crisis, along with defending his own moronic McCain-Feingold and forcing BHO to reveal his shady and criminal campaign financing, and McCain probably could have still taken it.

No one earning under $250K will have their taxes raised.
No one earning under $200K will have their taxes raised.

No one earning under $50K will have their taxes raised.
No one earning under $35K will have their taxes raised.
No one earning over $20K can be on welfare.
Get a green job that cost tax payers $800K to create to pay you $20K. Must be willing to relocate to China or Mexico.

Maybe the worms will turn when they start getting higher electric bills and pay more at the pump. I doubt it, stupid is as stupid does. Of course, the ones making up to 150% of the poverty line will get a rebate to reduce the pain.

That is it in a nutshell. It’s amazing that people can forget the truth from just over a year ago.
Huckabee never had a chance and was simply in there to hamstring Mitt.

Democrat National Suicide Plan:
1) Obligate and spend in a way that requires high growth in order to service.
2) Strap economy with onerous laws and regulations in order to severely limit growth and strip private capital.
3) Nation burns to the ground, along with everything and everyone in it, as debt is impossible to service and currency disappears in a puff of smoke.

Wow, you sure are a funny projectionist. Google the entire conversation instead of a four word sound bite. She spoke of Energy conservation in regards to C&T. Her direction of said issue has once again been over simplified. And this:

“Yeah, and I’m not a defeatist. I’m not saying that Alaska’s little voice will not be heard in the debate, but I am saying we have to be pragmatic.
We have to be realistic about it, and if this is what is coming from this new administration especially, we have got to be ready for that and we have to do our part to remedy the problems that I believe Cap and Trade are going to cause.”

The pathetically regurgitated homey humor news Huckabee Moments make me cringe at the thought that somehow someone is still thinking, “If only”, savoring the return of such a ninny. Huckabee performs with the same flourish as Joe Biden. And that’s a huckabee moment.
