Video: Boehner slaps down Waxman, filibusters cap and trade; Update: Bill passes, 219-212; eight GOPers are the difference; Update: GOP defectors named; Update: One defector considering Senate run

Yeah, I know: Technically there’s no filibuster in the House, but the majority and minority leaders are typically given great latitude in terms of how long they can speak. Enter Waxman, the genius behind the 300-page amendment no one’s read, wanting to know just how great that latitude is. High drama as the answer comes from Democrat Ellen Tauscher, presiding over the session.
How long can Boehner keep talking tonight? Stay tuned. Click the image to watch.
Update: The filibuster’s over and the final 15-minute vote is in progress. With nine minutes left, it’s 193-183.
Update: 219-212, with eight Republicans — the difference between passage and defeat — defecting to vote yes. The boss is already hunting around for their names. I hope they got a sweet deal from Pelosi because talk radio is about to make their lives very, very difficult.
Update: Inhofe predicts cap and trade will die in the Senate, which is probably true. I wonder if that made the bitter pill easier to swallow for those eight Republicans.
Update: The boss has the names:
Bono Mack
Castle
Kirk
Lance
LoBiondo
McHugh
Reichert
Smith (NJ)
Update: An epitaph from Vodkapundit: “Never have so few stolen so much from so many to achieve so little.”
Update: If you’re looking for a lightning rod among the elite eight, Mark Kirk is probably the one. He’s considering running for Obama’s old Senate seat next year. Memo to Kirk: Reconsider.
Update: A good point from Goldfarb while we’re busy obsessing over the eight GOP turncoats: What about the 50 Democrats who voted no? They’ve earned the ire of liberals needlessly, given that the bill’s destined for likely death in the Senate.

Sad that we call a filibuster someone actually reading the bill.
dems were probably nudging each other saying WTF? that was in there?

Boehner was terrific. Bravo for his leadership.
I want to see who will be the gutless jerk in the GOP, or “blue dog” democrat group to vote for this socialist bill.

battleoflepanto1571 on June 26, 2009 at 7:01 PM
I heard Charles Krauthammer say that they decided to give some cover to the blue dogs by cutting some allowances for the coal. So why bother at all? I mean by the time they get through with this thing it will just be a complete waste of money and time.
And calling it a jobs bill is such a hoot. Juan Williams tried that. Nonsense. If there was money in renewable energy people would not need a bill like this to get them to invest in it.

Thank you, Representative Ellen Tauscher, for doing your job of presiding fairly.
And thank you Representative John Boehner for speaking. My prayers are for your voice to last all night. But no matter how long you last, bless you for this. Very good job.

23 dems opposed so far
0 gop approve
dang this will be close dont the dems have a 40-something edge in the house? a flip of 23 might defeat it!

Well, to be fair, it’s a little easier to read quickly since some of the pages are blank, to be filled in after the vote.

i saw most of it…including when Waxman tried to stop it with a parliamentary inquiry about how long is the “magic minute”
so awesome….answer: discretion is minority leader’s.
Entire reading totally awesome…Now really did you know these fruitcake want to require your home to meet Eco-Standards? Like when you sell your home you’ll have to upgrade it to the standards.
Boehner is a hero. He/his staff put in lot of work.
Waxman is a fool. Afterwards he tried to get a time from the house president protem(sp?)…she said it fell within customary limits.
the RNC needs to go after the fruitcakes that vote for this.

I saw a map on the internet that showed where emissions were the greatest in this country. The map was blue and red. The red places were where the most emissions were, the blue was the least were.
Most of New York and California were bright red. The only red place in Indiana was Indianapolis. But somehow or other my state has to be pay for some idiot plan thought up by some idiot from California like Waxman. Maybe he should concentrate on the mess in his own state and leave mine alone.
