Poll: 50% of South Carolinians say Sanford should resign

posted at 4:59 pm on June 25, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

42 percent say he should stay, the rest are undecided. Honestly, I don’t know why he didn’t quit yesterday. He’s a lame duck with one year left in his term and no hope of higher office. He admitted to the reporter who caught him at the airport that he more or less hates his job these days. Why stay on? Resign and go home to work on your marriage or else file the divorce papers and move to Buenos Aires to live the life.

Here’s video of Krauthammer from last night’s Special Report aptly characterizing Sanford’s hopes of an intercontinental affair as “sort of insane” given his public prominence. He didn’t know the half of it: According to Politico, Sanford was planning to stay fully 10 days in Buenos Aires, not six, and if you believe TMZ, he and his mistress were very publicly flaunting their affection for each other at local bars. Maybe Kraut’s right; maybe Sanford had some bizarre sublimated wish to get caught. Or maybe he was just so moony in love that he wasn’t thinking clearly. Or, a third possibility, maybe his personal quirkiness somehow added up to being one of the most inept philanderers ever.

Only one thing’s clear at this point: Pretty much everyone in America’s dying to see photos of the mistress to make their own personal “was she worth it?” judgment. Well, here you go. Let the judgments begin!

Wow. News day has just been saturated with Sanford. It is what it is. Meanwhile, in NKor and Iran…

mimi1220 on June 25, 2009 at 5:02 PM

I heard Sanford was switching parties and running for the Senate. I don’t think he has enough street cred though, he only had an affair, he hasn’t killed anyone or bankrupted a company yet. There is still time though. 2012 is along ways off.

The sooner he gets out from under the public scrutiny the better for everyone. Unless that is, he has some perverse pleasure in being ridiculed.

He can switch parties and not pay taxes for the next couple of years. Yeah…. that will work! Perfect Dem. candidate.

One other thing, given what he’s had to contend with in the SC legislature and most recently with the TARP fund controversy I’m sure he did hate his job.

Edwards couldn’t get himself on the 3am news in Nowheresville, USA after he cheated on his cancer-stricken wife and created a baby from the affair….and Eddy was a VP candidate.

Poor Sanford, he belongs to the wrong party; if he were a ‘rat he would have Congress passing a resolution to honor his service and have America officially forgive him.

The man did stick to his Fiscal Conservative guns.

If he resigns, who ends up as Governor? I’m all for him resigning if he broke laws/rules of being a governor regardless of who will take charge after him.

If we’re asking him to resign simply because of a fidelity issue with his wife (which is not minor, but, is not exactly an impeachable offense) we’d better make sure the person that would be taking over is an improvement.

LOL…. that is really funny and true. At least there was some element of surprise with the Sanford incident. With O’Boring it’s the daily drone of endless, well, droning.

Cody1991 on June 25, 2009 at 5:13 PM

Sanford knew this was going to come out. Unless the South Carolina media is braindead, I think they would have eventually noticed his wife kicked him out. The paper had his emails for months and was just waiting for the best time to embarrass him with them.

Speedwagon82 on June 25, 2009 at 5:14 PM

Look, the best thing he can do right now, for his sake and that of his sons and his state, is to resign his position, divorce the wife, give her whatever she wants, pack his bags and not look back as he heads to Argentina and live a new life.

He’s damaged goods here. The best he can do is to start over, far awayfrom here. Wish the man good luck over there, because he’s finished here.

Oh, BTW: someone Allah likes to read has some… uh-oh… advice…

I heard on the radio that the people in SC want him to resign because he “betrayed their trust”. If that is the only criteria to make elected officials resign then everyone one in the Congress and Senate along with the White House needs to go too.
He had an affiar, ok, that makes him a pig like I said yesterday, Ted Kennedy however killed a woman and look where he is today.

I’m thinking those pictures aren’t of the real mistress:

Carlos Soto, the owner of Guido’s Bar, says he’s seen Sanford and Maria Belen Chapur there several times over the last few months — most recently last week.

Soto says they were “all over each other” last week in his bar, “kissing, holding hands and drinking wine.”

Soto was impressed with Maria, saying she has “un cuerpazo’” — translation: a banging body.

Soto also said Maria has green eyes and dirty blonde hair.

Rush was hinting at something earlier……….

……….. maybe he just doesn’t give a sh%t anymore?

He is termed out, but he fought against accepting Stimulus funds because he knew the damage that it would cause…….

…….. and the courts forced them on him.

We watch as the culprits who caused the economic crisis are put in charge of trying to fix it……….

……….. and they put our grand children in debt, and no one in the media blinks an eye.

Billions are spent to prop up the Unions, and contract laws are broken by the Executive Branch, and not a whimper…..

…… Trillions are spent in bills that no one is allowed to read, Czars are appointed without Congressional oversight left and right, Marxist/Socialist programs are advertised on major news media outlets as an infomercials, there is no accountability for where any of this money is going, Congress exempts themselves in laws that they will force on us, and Obama gets a pass.

Who could blame him………?

There were many people who really liked Sanford. This state has always attempted to be fiscally conservative, and Sanford tried to keep spending under control. He had a lovely wife, four beautiful sons. What’s not to like?

As I said on another thread it was the silly manner in which he disappeared. It was irresponsible which shocked people. Had he simply said that he and Jenny agreed to a separation, he was taking time off and that all state matters were in capable hands that would have worked. Instead he trotted off creating an embarrassing situation and leaving people to feel that their trust was disregarded.

That’s what made us angry. As far as I know we never had any worries about Sanford’s stability and commitment.

That said, one of my real concerns is our current pres. If Sanford melted under pressure, I can only anticipate the day that Mr. Cool finally flips out. He’s nowhere near as competent as Sanford, and he looks a little shaky to me.

They don’t think of consequences like you and I think…they just do, and let their handlers work it out.
Eventually, many step over the line and their handlers can’t handle it.

Clinton
Pelosi
Foley

The only real issue is whether he can run a government while the press obsesses over his infidelity.

It’s difficult to excuse the manner in which Sanford handled this. There’s no getting around it. The boys must be absolutely miserable. That’s what I don’t understand – Sanford’s selfish, juvenile attitude.

Liberal Dems on the other hand have the moral standards of alley cats. Bill Clinton comes to mind, and in a different sense, BO. Actually, I think BO is more of a concern.

As much as I despise his personal actions he needs to walk it off and prove he can still be a conservative.

He’ll forever be a shame to his family, don’t make it worse by being less of a governor.

Speakup on June 25, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Whether he resigns or not, the uber-adolescent, moonstruck Sanford obviously needs to get his head together. He’s obviously an emotional mess.

Affairs are fueled by secrecy and adrenalin…makes you feel all tingly and googly, clears up blemishes, helps you lose weight without the diet!… day to day marriage can’t hold a candle to that kind of rush. Affairs are a WAY different animal than a marriage – it’s way more like an addiction to intrigue, secrecy, chaos, and drama. (Start the violins..”don’t cry for me Argentina..) Maybe that commandment about not committing adultery isn’t as stupid as some people think.

After all the personal destruction Sanford will leave in his wake, if he has half a conscience, I give his happiness in Argentina a pretty slim to none chance of happening. Besides, at least half of his appeal to Maria had to do with his Alpha status. She may not like him quite. so. much. when Mark, the once dashing, ambitious preidential hopeful, is out pounding the pavement in Buenos Aires trying to sell trinkets on the street corner.

He’d be better off to just cowboy the heck up right where he is and take care of his family. Real adults do this all the time.

A man cannot govern a nation if he cannot govern a city; he cannot govern a city if he cannot govern a family; he cannot govern a family unless he can govern himself; and he cannot govern himself unless his passions are subject to reason. -Hugo Grotius, 1553-1645

IMHO, Governor Sanford should resign immediately for one reason and one reason only……. Trust.

There is no way anyone could or should ever trust the guy again with anything.

Eight years he knew her, over a year he’s been “hittin’ it” and hidin’ it from his family and the people who put him into public office.

I’ll say the same thing about anyone else in office….. you violate the trust people put in you, then you have zero possibility to stay in place.

Another thought. Perhaps if the GOP will put their money where their mouth is, they would gain new respect. They go on record condemning others (as Sanford and Newt did) while they can’t maintain their own standard. No wonder everyone thinks the GOP is hypocritical.

Democrats can get away with this stuff because they have no standards and have never claimed to have them. That’s fine. Let them do what they do. But as for our side, let’s walk our talk. And when we fail, let there be appropriate consequences.

I agree. The only time I wouldn’t is if, by resigning, his seat would go to a bigger scumbag.
Lincoln said that our constitution is not a suicide pact. We cannot allow our virtue to become one as well.
If a good Republican can replace him,, he needs to go. If not,, if a Marxist Dem were to take over in his place,,, then conservatives would do well,, as even Christians would,, to keep him until someone better can take his place.

I totally agree. Your spouse is supposed to be the one person you love and trust most in the world. If you betray the trust of the one person who really matters, how in the world are your constituents supposed to be able to trust that you won’t betray them someday/or haven’t already?

Who cares about health care, celebrity deaths, Iran, NoKo, or politican scandals. We are all doomed.

How did this woman become a “dear friend” when she was a sales rep for agra-business?

Blake on June 25, 2009 at 7:40 PM

i’m not a advocate of adultery but, cut the guy a little slack…he came clean didn’t he? he was not under oath saying i did not have sex with that women….he made a mistake, let him work it out with his family instead of trying to crucify him….your world did not come to a end because of this. did it?

SHARPTOOTH on June 25, 2009 at 7:49 PM

Governor, please resign immediately and go through counseling with your wife and children; that is much more important in the big scheme of things…

Khun Joe on June 25, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Wondering what’s ahead for him. He probably will not resign since so little of his term is left. But it is the end of his political career–for now! I’d like to feel sorry for him, but I can’t. He messed up badly, with full knowledge of what he was risking. It’s called making choices and he made bad ones.

jeanie on June 25, 2009 at 7:54 PM

From all reports, the Lt. Gov. is probably not somebody you want taking over.

Still think there’s a good chance Sanford will walk away, but I’m not sure SC will be better off.

cs89 on June 25, 2009 at 7:54 PM

The true victims in this, are the Sanford children. The pain they’re going thru right now, has to be tough. Especially now, that the msm’s seem to be salivating on this story, while ignoring bigger, more important issues.

Granted, what Sanford did, is wrong, but now, it’s between him, his wife, and children. My prayers go out to them, and I hope that in the end, they’re all happy. This is a hard situation for all of them, so now, all I can do, is give them my prayers, and thoughts.

No. Our world didn’t come to an end, but I think some of the anxiety that’s being reflected is due to the concerns about the Republican choices in 2012. It’s exacerbated by watching what’s going on with Barry and Dem control of the government.

Everything is moving ahead at full blast and out of control. We’ve got drunks driving a speeding vehicle with little signs of anyone attempting to put on the brakes.

What happened with Sanford isn’t the end of the world, for sure. However, the reaction to his disgrace and his elimination as a potential candidate reflects the fear of many Americans. Who will we find to run effectively and, in time, be capable of overturning BO’s disastrous policies? It will take strong leadership and many years.

I’m looking for a young Dick Cheney, someone tough as nails and a true American. I want someone who can tell Pelosi and her crowd to, “Phuck off.” And I really want someone from a ‘flyover’ state. You know, where real Americans reside. No blue state bull$hit. No way.

capejasmine on June 25, 2009 at 7:56 PM

Yes, they sure are.

This morning some more ‘private’ emails were printed in The State. They were written shortly after the guv’s first sexual encounter with his mistress, apparently. They’re discussing the impossibility of the situation, and he referred only to his duties as governor and to her responsibilities to her children. Not a peep about his marriage or his children. I’d felt somewhat sympathetic toward him until I read that. There were obviously serious problems in his marriage for some time, but I can never feel any sympathy for people who can just forget the fact that they have children.

ProfessorMiao on June 25, 2009 at 8:11 PM

Well there’s a Republican in trouble so the State Controlled Media is really going to cover this to death.

Anyways – yes – Mark Sanford should go. The affair is one thing – going AWOL is quite another.

SHARPTOOTH on June 25, 2009 at 7:49 PM

Uh, yes and no…seems he used taxpayer money to pay for some of his visits to his ‘dear friend’ in Argentina. Say’s he’s gonna pay it back…but..sorry…going from worse to worser.

AUINSC on June 25, 2009 at 8:13 PM

Well, MJ and FF just took some of the heat off. And it’s just about the weekend too. Sanford’s almost in the clear and into the realm of ‘old news.’

Vatican Watcher on June 25, 2009 at 8:17 PM

I couldn’t pick up the link, but something called “The State” claims an admission by Sanford that taxpayers picked up an $8000 tab for a June ‘08 trip to Argentina, and he has promised to repay after being confronted. If true, that should cook his goose good. a capella on June 25, 2009 at 6:49 PM

Sanford and his wife were both from families that are quit wealthy. I am a South Carolinian. I don’t think that he should resign.

i understand what your saying and i agree, but this does not necessarily change things, 2112 is a long ways away. lets let sanford figure out where he’s at and what he want’s to do.

SHARPTOOTH on June 25, 2009 at 8:28 PM

He doesn’t need to resign. Politicians of both parties have done far worse and kept their office to face the voters again.

He should resign, though, out of sheer embarrassment, that he wasn’t able to conduct an intercontinental love affair without keeping it quiet, and that he conducts such an embarrassing press conference.

Not really executive material.

Plus this business about him digging holes on his property and the dead child. That would have come out in 2012.

He should move to Argentina. I’m sure his wife would pay for the ticket.

SHARPTOOTH on June 25, 2009 at 8:32 PM

I heard Sanford was switching parties and running for the Senate. I don’t think he has enough street cred though, he only had an affair, he hasn’t killed anyone or bankrupted a company yet. There is still time though. 2012 is along ways off.

portlandon on June 25, 2009 at 5:03 PM

Wow, that’s really witty. Let’s see – Laura Bush killed someone and her drunken cheerleading husband ran 2 companies into bankruptcy. Yep, Mission Accomplished time!

SHARPTOOTH on June 25, 2009 at 8:28 PM

I’m not concerned about Sanford paying the bill for his trip. He’s not a crook. He has other debts to pay. He’s basically been a good guy, but in all honesty, as I said last night, I never thought he wanted to be POTUS. Compared to BO he looks good, but I think we can do much, much better.

I really don’t think he wants the job. It’s time to move on. There’s talent in the Republican/Conservative ranks.
