ObamaCare infomercial: What were they thinking?
posted at 1:26 pm on June 25, 2009 by Karl
Seriously. What were they thinking?
The health care “town hall” event at the White House staged by ABCNews was clearly intended as part of Pres. Obama’s week-long PR blitz to bolster the case for health care reform, to be followed today with rallies funded and organized by the Usual Suspects.
ABCNews denied that it was actively assisting this effort, despite running graphics in a font remarkably similar to the Gotham font Obama used throughout the 2008 campaign. But despite the presence of a couple of challenging questioners, the pre-selected questions and general lack of follow-up made for an experience similar to the lame press conference format lefty bloggers like Ezra Klein were decrying yesterday morning, but probably enjoying in primetime. (Even ABC’s online fact-checking was lame, verging on the left-leaning. In contrast, Cato managed to savage Obama’s talking points in real time.)
The upside for Obama in this format is that he was generally able to bob and weave away from the real issues. For example, he talked about increasing the number of primary care doctors without acknowledging this could inflate the health care costs he claims he is trying to contain.
He could deliver his standard talking points about preventative care, even the vast majority of preventative measures reviewed in the health economics literature do not save money.
He could simply assert that “often times we know what makes sense and what doesn’t,” in pushing comparative effectiveness research, despite the fact that it is already killing cancer patients in Britain, to name but one example. (Indeed, no one followed up on his semi-oblique suggestion that America generally needs to move to a culture that disfavors heroic end-of-life care.)
Obama could talk about a proposed government-run plan without addressing the arguments that such a plan would almost inevitably engage in unfair competition. Obama was not asked whether a public plan would be allowed to fail. He was not asked about the Senate bill that would allow a public plan to avoid state regulation. He was not asked about the Lewin Group estimate that as many as 119 million people could be dumped from their current coverage into to the public plan until the Nightline segment, which was likely watched by far fewer people. Obama should doubly thank ABCNews for burying that exchange because — despite the fact that he had to know it was probably coming — it was Aetna CEO Ron Williams, not the Orator-in-Chief, who had the soundbite: “It’s difficult to compete against a player who’s also the person refereeing the game.” (At that link, Jake Tapper also notes that the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that support for a public plan plummets to 37 percent if it would crowd out private insurers. But I digress.)
He got to complain about the Congressional Budget Office’s stubborn refusal to score his imaginary game-changers as actual savings, while refusing to commit to any method of paying for a plan that Obama admitted might cost as much as $2 trillion. As CBS News correspondent Mark Knoller noted again and again and again, throughout the primetime special — and the Nightline addendum — Obama would pretend he was going to address a “challenging question,” or would say that an issue required a “difficult decision,” while avoiding an answer.
But what did Obama really get for all of his dodging? He didn’t take many punches, but he didn’t land any, either. Drew Weston might say that it is smart to avoid wonkery and focus on his three basic principles (however dishonest they may be) — lower costs, freedom to choose and coverage for all Americans. But even if the audience will not remember the details, they will remember (even if subconsciously) whether there were details. Platitudes alone will not address the public skepticism of about the types of fixes being proposed by Obama and the Democrats.
Weston also believes in the power of stories over policy (and there is some merit to that argument). On that front, Obama got to talks about his late grandmother again. But he was also exposed as a rank hypocrite on the issue of seeking extraordinary care for his own family before making it clear that he thinks other people’s families should hurry up and die already:
Jane Sturm told the story of her nearly 100-year-old mother, who was originally denied a pacemaker because of her age. She eventually got one, but only after seeking out another doctor.
“Outside the medical criteria,” Sturm asked, “is there a consideration that can be given for a certain spirit … and quality of life?”
“I don’t think that we can make judgments based on peoples’ spirit,” Obama said.
Obama came off sounding more like one of the evil insurance company execs he wants to drive out of business than the sort of empathetic person he wants to appoint to the federal judiciary.
Pres. Obama’s approach of leaving all of those “difficult decisions” to Congress and refusing to commit to any specifics that might turn out to be unpopular places him in the role of professor, not president. It’s hard to be a leader with no direction. It’s hard to sell a plan when you don’t have a plan. It’s hard to be given hours of ABCNews time and not make any news, but Obama seems to have managed it. ABCNews gave Obama a gift, and he squandered it. The town hall was billed as a “Prescription for America,” but viewers were left with little idea as to what might end up in the bottle.
As Obamacare started running into trouble in Congress, some on the Left — like Stanley Greenberg and Nate Silver — started begging Pres. Obama to get out and sell, sell, sell a government takeover. Ezra Klein argued that Obama should have sat back and waited until Congress pushed as far as it could. Yesterday’s installment of O!TV seems to have accomplished the worst of both worlds, burning some political capital to no concrete purpose.

It’s a beautiful thing. The intent was a distration from the crap and trade bill, while drumming up future support for socialized medicine. Now, it looks like the halfback ran into his own lineman, and fumbled.

I’ve worked in consulting firms where they tackle some of the most difficult questions/problems a client can pose. They research, disect, question, interview experts, etc., before providing the client with a plan. It appears that bozo and the democrats have no plan other than “we need to be saved from the healthcare industry and now”. I hope this tanks along with all of the other nonsense they have proposed.

Anyone who actually watched that hackery all the way through, desperately needs SOME sort of health care.
I’m sure it was about as enlightening as slogging through a meeting of the old Soviet Politburo.

I don’t think that format works. Hillary tried it. It bombed. McCain tried it. It bombed. One debate tried it. It bombed.
It’s just a bad format.
As always, I disagree with you about this issue. I am adamant FOR a public option.

The most telling exchange for me (keeping in mind I didn’t watch ANY of the ABC tripe) was his response to Jane Sturm. Not only did he say “I don’t think that we can make judgments based on peoples’ spirit,” he went on to add that ‘maybe instead of having that surgery, you should just take the pain medicine’.
Hey, I’m sure the AARP folks who are recovering from their hip surgery would be GLAD to hear that he’s against the procedure, right?

Here are more facts on this health care bill:
They are going to tax your current employer provided health care benefits UNLESS you get them from a union. Straight up, unequal application of who pays the taxes. The Democrats are using this bill to payoff their voting constituents, the unions. Remember, only about 10% of the workforce is unionized and not all union workers get their benefits from a union plan. Many get them from their employers directly. So straight up, your neighbor may not have to pay this tax but YOU will if you get yours from your employer and they get theirs directly from their union. How do you like them apples?
Now what kind of tax cost are we talking about? As an employer, I can tell you that it costs about $1200 a month to cover a family, if not more. An average income worker is in the 15% or 25% tax bracket. And they also pay 7.65% FICA taxes, too. So YOU are going to have to pay about 22% or 32% in taxes on about $14,000 extra income a year and this is without a salary increase. Instead, your health care premium costs are going to be reported on your W2 and YOU will have to pay taxes on this benefit that you do not pay now. So your take home pay is going to go down about $300 to $400 a month to pay federal taxes on your current benefits. If you live in a state that has an income tax, you will pay an addition $40 to 80 a month more in state taxes.
All of this to pay for a system that will NOT solve the uninsured problem. It just shuffles WHO is uninsured. AND it WILL cover ILLEGAL ALIENS and Congress is exempting itself from being subjected to this program. This is what YOUR Congress wants to ram down your throats.

Actually, that’s partially true, except subsitute “lose weight” for surgery.
There was a recent study that showed that for elderly patients, most knee surgery is no more effective that physical therapy combined with weight loss.
I think there is money to be saved by shifting people away from orthopedic surgery into diet/weight loss/exercise regimens, but I also know that the feds have no stomach for that fight.
If you politicize medical decisions, than the “biggest” constiuencies will win. There are a lot of old, fat voters out there.
If you can’t vote, well, you’re out of luck. Look what Democrats do to the unborn.

I never thought Obama was the right president for healthcare.
But I do think ALL of them are in for a shocker on this one. This will be the issue that burns both Republicans and Dems.
It was consistently the number one issue in the election.
It polls consistently. 72% is a high. Shoot me if you like. Pretend the poll is flawed beyond redemption, but if you’re silly enough to ignore the message, then you’re just silly.
This WILL bite.
Lobbyists using scare tactics aren’t working anymore. People we walk with daily have far worse scary stories, and they are real. And they are due to insurance problems.

And besides, regardless of the cost of coverage, you are DODGING the poing about how expensive this reform is going to be on every non-union taxpayer. Their take home pay is going down a LOT and their spendable income did not go up at all. Congress just tacked a huge increase in their reportable income, and will have to pay income and FICA taxes on these currently untaxed benefits.

I think the whole debate over government-controlled healthcare is premature. Before launching into moronic ideas like “public plans” I want to see the evidence that government can run health systems more efficiently with greater coverage than the private insurers. Anybody who has had to access health services through the VA may have some sobering stories to pop the irrational balloon of optimism that surrounds the idiots who want to turn over health services to the government. I want to see the proven model before we inflict this idiocy on working Americans.
Anybody who wants a public plan should sign up for a beta test where they let the government control their health coverage. Then after two years lets see how these people (if they are still living) fared against the portion of the population under private insurance. My prediction is that these brave volunteers would be raving about the quality of service they get at the DMV.

You have yet to explain how all this will be funded when Democrats and the filthy liar in the White House has already spent trillions on “jobs creation” packages that have been a complete failure.

They’ll keep their exceptional plan they have now, and stick us with sub par care. Deny us on their whims, any life saving care, and this just gets you revved up? Get a grip girl. Have you seen the polls? Americans want reform, but they sure as hell don’t want this crap shoved down their throats.
capejasmine on June 25, 2009 at 2:07 PM
I caught a portion where he talked about insurance companies not being able to deny anyone.
Group policies don’t currently deny anyone. . . so he must have been talking about individual and family policies.
Of course, he didn’t say that taking underwriting out of the process will cause the premiums and COST to go up for HEALTHY PEOPLE.
All of his proposals will increase the cost of health care. Most state governments have a risk pool to help the uninsurable. If Obama insists that the individual plans cover everyone with every condition, the cost for healthy people will skyrocket.
Bottom line: Underwriting is a specific tool that insurers use to keep costs to their clients down. Remove that, rates go up.

So are presidents. We SO need to get rid (politically) of these elite effete boobs up there.
Mojave Mark on June 25, 2009 at 2:13 PM
Congress has gotten by for years taking lobby money and ignoring the consistent call for reform from the public.
Frankly, I think think the recession will be the tipping point.
They are misjudging.
We mean it.

That damn rodent at Disney World will get better health care than we will under this sham.

It was a distraction so we focus on healthcare and not the energy vote tomorrow. Would Pelosi call for a vote if she was sure she had enough yay’s?
ctmom on June 25, 2009 at 2:18 PM
Nothing new there. PRESENT! Barry’s a ‘vision’ guy. He never worries about the details. You know, the one’s where a real person counts real dollars. People like you and me, who have to live on a paycheck and a budget.
GarandFan on June 25, 2009 at 2:18 PM
(1) Why is Kent Conrad’s alternative to the “public option” — nonprofit co-ops — an unacceptable approach?
(2) If the “public option” is “non-negotiable,” will it be allowed to fail? If not, can it really compete fairly?
(3) The President said, literally scores if not hundreds of times during the campaign, that under his plan “if you like your health care coverage you can keep it.” Do you accept that his current “clarification” of his position, that the government will not directly deny anyone access to their current health coverage, is what he meant all along? If it is, why didn’t he just say that? Or was he lying all along?
(4) Were you aware that the original Medicare 30-year cost projections were off by a factor of 9?
DrSteve on June 25, 2009 at 2:19 PM
Yeah, we notice that Medicare’s shortfall is what, $50T? Why not fix that problem before starting another?
Your imagined compassion for people who need healthcare is analogous to throwing a drowning man a velvet-covered anvil.
Akzed on June 25, 2009 at 2:19 PM
Exactly!!! Are we prepared to pay 74% more for gas at the pump? Are we prepared to pay 55% more, for our energy for our homes? No? Get on the phones now, and call your congressmen, and congresswomen! Tell them NO!!!!!!!
capejasmine on June 25, 2009 at 2:20 PM
LOL*
Not nearly as much as you might imagine.
But your post made me laugh. I am nuts on this topic.
We’ve lost 7 hospitals in LA in 5 years. We seriously must address this issue.
The losses are directly due to the uninsured problem in this area.
I personally support a mandated plan. You want ER services?
Buy the federal public option plan on the spot. You don’t?
Drive to the border.
I’m into solutions on this issue.
AnninCA on June 25, 2009 at 2:21 PM
Excellent! I postulate that the reason ratings bombed is because half the concerned viewers (conservatives) refused to watch a liberal Infomercial for OxyCare. It reminds me of the night there was a Democratic Presidential debate on CNN in 2008 and Fox had more viewers watching a conversation about the live debate than CNN had people watching the debate.

Your congressman: 202-224-3121.
Akzed on June 25, 2009 at 2:21 PM
When you see the polling dynamics for the public option so wildly buffeted about by exactly the concerns you see raised here (affecting your coverage, raising taxes, crowding out private insurers), in polls you seem happy to cite otherwise, I think the one not listening is you.
DrSteve on June 25, 2009 at 2:22 PM
My dear girl..Do you honestly think that government administration of health care will correct these problems.
I posted the other day the 3 things necessary to reform health care. This is for you. Everybody else sorry.
1. Tort reform – have plantiffs caver all court costs and attorney fees is you lose.
2. Require proof of citizenship for all NON-LIFE THREATENING emergency care. You can have a public pool for these issues.
3. Allow individuals and sm. businesses to pool premiums to spread risks and reduce costs.
Fixed. Done
