Video: The freaky deaky Mark Sanford press conference; Update: Wife told him to leave two weeks ago; Update: SC paper reprints e-mails to mistress

He could have been president, now he’s finished: Witness the power of the male libido. The full video’s here but I’m giving you the three-minute nitty gritty below. Watch the girl over his right shoulder smile as he admits the affair, thereby adding an extra element of freaky-deakiness to this debacle.

Under different circumstances I think he could have survived this, but it’s a quirk of our politics that voters don’t mind cheating as much as they do inept cheating. Infidelity makes you a cad; unannounced week-long disappearances and rambling confessional pressers about the new lady in your life makes you a cad and erratic, and Americans don’t dig erratic in their would-be presidents. Word on the street via Geraghty is that if he doesn’t resign the state legislature will move to impeach him. Not sure what the grounds would be — dereliction of duty for dropping off the map for a week, maybe? — but I doubt he’ll have to be pushed like Blagojevich was.

At the rate we’re going, I’m starting to think Obama might run unopposed in 2012. Exit question: Think The One’s happy that his big health-care infomercial tonight has to compete for headlines tomorrow with Sanford and Iran?

Update: An eloquent statement from Mrs. S. The money bit:

I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband’s infidelity I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage. We reached a point where I felt it was important to look my sons in the eyes and maintain my dignity, self-respect, and my basic sense of right and wrong. I therefore asked my husband to leave two weeks ago.

This trial separation was agreed to with the goal of ultimately strengthening our marriage. During this short separation it was agreed that Mark would not contact us. I kept this separation quiet out of respect of his public office and reputation, and in hopes of keeping our children from just this type of public exposure. Because of this separation, I did not know where he was in the past week.

Update: Evidently this has been an open secret for some time because The State newspaper has been sitting on e-mails between Sanford and his lady friend since December. A sample:

Three and finally, while all the things above are all too true – at the same time we are in a hopelessly – or as you put it impossible – or how about combine and simply say hopelessly impossible situation of love. How in the world this lightening strike snuck up on us I am still not quite sure. As I have said to you before I certainly had a special feeling about you from the first time we met, but these feelings were contained and I genuinely enjoyed our special friendship and the comparing of all too many personal notes …

Er, how’d they get the e-mails?

He should resign as Governor, right away.

But I don’t think his career in politics is over, unless he wants it to be.

I thought he handled the press conference, from what I’ve seen here anyway, pretty well.

I am so sick of these weak-willed politicians on both sides of the fence.

They’re the opposite of weak-willed. They’re the epitome of pride and strong will — they think nothing can stop them.

Sorry, psv. Had I known you were going, I’d have warned you. SoCal is famous for its lousy June weather. Even the weatherpeople call it “June gloom.” Happens every year. Next time try July or August. It’s glorious then.

I’m not going to watch it, or read his e-mails. Maybe I’m old school, but a press conference need not trump a press release.

If Sanford was a good Gov. before the story broke, he should not “resign” unless that’s what he wants. His political career should NOT be ruined. His session’s over, and he was up front with his exposition. Let it go. What’s done is between the Sanfords.

If all of his letters are of that quality, he can only helped by them because they’re the letters of a man who is love.

If he turns out to be a serial cheater then, no.

He was my guy, so I’m not ready to give up on him just yet. He needs to do the right thing though and resign. He doesn’t have to worry about being forgotten. And the worst thing he can do is what Palin did: stay in the spotlight.

Go back to the private sector. Do all those physical things he seems to love. No pun intended. And then, if you want to run, come back clean.

Honey, he might have really been in LOVE.

Some of you women think men can’t love. They can and do.

And when they do, they show it.

Tell me this, who would you rather be married to:

The boring, gruff, come home reliable man who hits you up for only beer and never mentions how beautiful you really are for some 40 years?

Or, the man who writes you love letters reminding you how special you are and how it is so utterly impossible for him to not want you NOW?

Come on Katie, let’s hear it. Be honest. Is romance and feeling loved important to women or not?

Obviously, this was a man suffering some amount of loneliness. This is the most vulnerable time for a man to commit adultery.

Do you really think that our American women from Brown and Wellesley are any match to an attractive latina in her “A” game, who understands much better the primordial essence of masculinity better and the eternal dance of the sexes?

Check out the love letters that have been released.

This isn’t Barney Frank screwing pages here.

Sanford should divorce his wife and just marry the Argentinian chick. Its clear from the letters that this wasn’t just a Spitzer deal. He really does sound like hes in love with her.

Speedwagon82 on June 24, 2009 at 7:09 PM

What a FUBAR. Sanford might as well have just gone ahead and done this the day before taking off on his South American fandango. Good grief

nickj116 on June 24, 2009 at 7:11 PM

If Mrs. Sanford told him not to contact her until he had ended his affair, that meant she was going to protect herself from the pain of watching him cheat on her, while waiting for her H’s affair to end. That was actually a smart move, since almost ALL affairs end w/in 2 years.

He wasn’t screwing the bimbo in her presence. She knew he was cheating on her during this “separation” just like she knew he was cheating on her when they weren’t “separated.” And I don’t see how separating for two weeks so he can go fk his girlfriend is any less demeaning to women or good for a marriage in the long run. He had a year to end the affair and he didn’t. Expecting women to give their husbands up to 2 year sabbaticals to go screw who they want and spend time away from them and their children is nuts.

Maybe this is her way of reminding him that she is still open to recovering their M, if he will end the affair.

Marsh on June 24, 2009 at 5:54 PM

After he’s been fking his bimbo for a year and only ended it, if indeed he has, because he got caught, it’s another way of telling him: Hey! I’m still your doormat!

She’s relatively young, has her kids, has lots of money — she could go find someone else that would not treat her like crap. There comes a time when you just have to cut your losses.

Blake on June 24, 2009 at 7:12 PM

Sapwolf

He broke his promises and his vows. Love is not about feelings; it’s about commitment. He should have ENDED that correspondence with the woman when the friendship started to change and devote his time and energy to his WIFE. If he was feeling “lonely,” he should have talked to his WIFE. She is the one deserving of his attention.

I am not impressed by anyone who puts his or her selfish self-gratification ahead of his or her children and marriage.

Sanford chose his mistress over his sons on Father’s Day. Very sad.

Whatta POS, sorry to say. And I’ve been an admirer of his politics and had thought he’d have been a good choice as running mate for McCain. Perhaps this is why he wasn’t…..

Marriages break – I get that. The true mark of a person is how you handle it.

Flying off, foisting lies, and creating vast wreckage in your wake, wreckage of things you hold dear (your job, kids, party, future, etc.) in my book precludes him from political future. This guy’s already shown the only thing that really matters to him is him.

Governor Palin hasn’t cheated on her man.

Governor Palin has had the biggest media vetting and vicious campaign ever and stood tall through it all and fights on.

She didn’t put herself in the spotlight. The MSM put her in the spotlight and continues to try and destroy her and she keeps on tickin.

Don’t ever imply all the GOP need to get out of the spotlight.

Their problem is that they don’t get into the spotlight enough and when they do, the GOP lets the MSM call the shots.

Sapwolf on June 24, 2009 at 7:07 PM

There is nothing more spectacular than being in love. Having a person meet you top emotional needs and fill your cup over to over flowing.

That is….if the person you are in love w/ is not married to another person.

B/c then you can be HONEST and OPEN about your relationship.

You don’t have to hide it. Keep it secret. And betray those you promised to honor.

When you committ adultery, it FEEDS on secrecy. It grows in strength and blinds you from the ugliness of it by giving you the same feelings you get when in love, only more extreme.

It is pure deception.

Be honest. Is romance and feeling loved important to women or not?

Of course it is.

Obviously, this was a man suffering some amount of loneliness.

And who’s responsible for his feelings? If he was feeling lonely, perhaps he should have reached out INSIDE his marriage, rather than looking OUTSIDE it.

This is the most vulnerable time for a man to commit adultery.

Aw. If he were an ADULT, he would not have been led by his feelings, but by honorable deeds.

Do you really think that our American women from Brown and Wellesley are any match to an attractive latina in her “A” game, who understands much better the primordial essence of masculinity better and the eternal dance of the sexes?

Is his wife a Brown or Wellseley girl?

And if she was, why should SHE be responsible for his lack of character?

You could say she was 50% responsible for the condition of their marriage, but he was 100% responsible for his affair.

No argument here. Good post.

And, your post articulately points out in a way why it is important that our leaders can be trusted. If they are not loyal to their spouses, it makes many in the populace wonder if they can be trusted with other things. I know I would feel nervous trusting Gov. Sanford now that this is news if I lived in SC.

As a conservative, I’ve tried to point out how important it is for our leaders to set good examples too. My best friend is a rather very secular or agnostic libertarian. I’ve had discussions with him on why the social issues are important as the economic, foreign policy issues. They feed off of each other and are intertwined.

scalleywag on June 24, 2009 at 7:41 PM

He wasn’t screwing the bimbo in her presence.

Do you think he was taking her calls in his home? Her e-mails?

When your spouse is having an affair…especially a very emotional one like Sanford’s…your spouse will quit sleeping w/ you. Will cut you off in almost every way.

They act in ways you never thought possible.

So when I said she may have wanted to protect herself from his affair, I meant the entire ordeal…not the sexual act. I haven’t heard of too many affair partners who would eff their other pereople in front of their spouse.

She knew he was cheating on her during this “separation” just like she knew he was cheating on her when they weren’t “separated.”

I agree. But, she didn’t have to see the evidence of it on a daily basis.

And I don’t see how separating for two weeks so he can go fk his girlfriend is any less demeaning to women or good for a marriage in the long run. He had a year to end the affair and he didn’t. Expecting women to give their husbands up to 2 year sabbaticals to go screw who they want and spend time away from them and their children is nuts.

If a person wants to save their M when adultery has taken place then it is a good idea to understand them.

If a person knew that most affairs end in 2 years, and they are willing to try to wait it out, there is nothing demeaning in that.

If another person wants to kick their spouse to the curb that’s fine too.

But, not everyone is the same.

After he’s been fking his bimbo for a year and only ended it, if indeed he has, because he got caught, it’s another way of telling him: Hey! I’m still your doormat!

If your goal is to RECOVER your marriage, than you would never settle for the job of a doormat.

YOu would say to your spouse, I am willing to try to recover this M. You will need to do XY and Z or I am not willing to recover it.

She’s relatively young, has her kids, has lots of money — she could go find someone else that would not treat her like crap. There comes a time when you just have to cut your losses.

Well, gig’em and hook’em. I’m inclusive as long as you’re conservative. :)

Oh another thing, I would SO appreciate it if the next a-hole Republican who gets caught cheating on his wife & makes a public confession would LEAVE GOD OUT OF IT.

That’s not a real good time for a sermon.

Thankyouverymuch.

Dave:

You forgot Edwards, oops, he really was a Democrat. The thing is a guy like Barney Frank can have a lover who runs a male escort service out of his apartment and no one really cares, because he is a Democrat and the same rules just do not apply. If they did, Bill Clinton would never have become President in the first place. The man was a well known womanizer long before he left Arkansas.

BTW, mind your own damn business you meddling little canuck.

I think Sanford is actually in love with the woman. That is what makes this all so strange.

I wonder about those emails too. Who would want them to see the light of day?

Terrye on June 24, 2009 at 8:15 PM

And btw Drywall, charges were dropped against Stevens. The same can not be said for Obama’s friend and mentor, Good Old Hot Rod, the former Governor of Illinois.

D@#^ him! The most libertarian and Federalist of the possibilities for 2012, and he squandered it. Notwithstanding he’d still be better than the current occupant (exceedingly low bar there), better to find out about his lack of judgment now than after he got in…D@#^ him!

Rahm Emanuel, after Sanford rejected the Porkulus funding.

Anyone who thinks this is a coincidence is not paying attention.

Probably his wife. Imagine how she feels. She knows he loves his mistress.

His press conference revealed that so very plainly.

Terrye on June 24, 2009 at 8:15 PM

It wasn’t love.

When you committ adultery, it FEEDS on secrecy. It grows in strength and blinds you from the ugliness of it by giving you the same feelings you get when in love, only more extreme.

It is pure deception.

Marsh on June 24, 2009 at 8:26 PM

Bring back the male virtues: silence, solitude, the invoilabilty of one’s word and women.

From Sandor Marai’s Embers.

Obviously the invoilability of one’s word include keeping your marriage vows.

As a single woman it always seemed best to me to stand by the old adage: Marry in haste, repent in leisure.

There are very few marriages I’ve seen that I would want. But my heart leaps with joy when I see an elderly couple holding hands.

A couple more adages:

“In marriage, it’s always best to begin with a little aversion.”

The Three Stooges going door to door conducting a study: “Are you happy, or are you married?”

Good-@#*@ing-grief! If you can’t keep it in your pants for the good of your family, for pitty sakes, think of your country, your party, your state, your constituents. Governor Sanford, as one who voted for you and supported you, I am appalled that you would think for a flea-blink second that this would be good for anyone else but you. Pathetic.

LEBA on June 24, 2009 at 8:47 PM

Dear gop, stop the farce of you being the “morals” party. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. You are the party of self-destruction because you put yourselves up on a pedestal waiting to be knocked off. You deserve what has happened to you. Newt trying to impeach Clinton, while he carried on an affair with his aide. Ensign, being all holier-than-thou. But the kicker is you people never learn, you keep on thumping your bibles, talking about prayer in schools. Hyprocrites. And now the chickens are coming home to roost, and you can’t blame this on the “liberals”. Thats the real kicker, nobody to blame but yourselves. And good luck with Flip Flop Mitt and Caribou Barbie as your top tier candidates. The evangelicals will never vote for a Mormon and anybody with any sense won’t vote for Barbie.

The “Republican” brand could only slide further into the shitter if it advocated aborted-embryo rape.

The sooner we’re rid of the “Republican Party”, the better.

Ditto “Democrat Party”, of course…

LimeyGeek on June 24, 2009 at 8:50 PM

Allah,

I was reading the Governor’s emails, and they read like a romance novel aka blue literature…you know heaving chest, and aching in unassignable places, in his body of longing….he has a second career if he wants, just sayin it’s something he might want to look into. In the meantime the cover of a romance novel is crying out to be photo shopped accordingly with his photo, and the right title.

Dr Evil on June 24, 2009 at 8:51 PM

Do you think he was taking her calls in his home? Her e-mails?

Whether he was or wasn’t, he refused to end the affair. Kicking him out for two weeks only gave him permission to continue screwing her without guilt. Doormat.

So when I said she may have wanted to protect herself from his affair, I meant the entire ordeal…not the sexual act. I haven’t heard of too many affair partners who would eff their other pereople in front of their spouse.

Giving your husband tacit permission to screw his mistress is not protecting oneself. It’s acting like a doormat. And I was not the one who used the word “watching” – you did. Also, she did not tell him not to contact her till he ended the affair just not to contact them during this “short separation” which gave him more time to screw his bimbo.

I agree. But, she didn’t have to see the evidence of it on a daily basis.

As you said, she wasn’t in the room when they were fkg. However, she knew they were together whether he was in the home or off on his South American hiking tick check.

If a person wants to save their M when adultery has taken place then it is a good idea to understand them.

Right. She’s a doormat.

If another person wants to kick their spouse to the curb that’s fine too. But, not everyone is the same.

They are still a doormat and when the marriage breaks up anyway, they will have less dignity and lost time.

If your goal is to RECOVER your marriage, than you would never settle for the job of a doormat.

Sending him off to S.A. for two weeks was settling to be a doormat. He ended the affair because he got caught – not for the wife and families sake.

YOu would say to your spouse, I am willing to try to recover this M. You will need to do XY and Z or I am not willing to recover it.

You think she didn’t for 5 months?? He refused. He did not go off to end the affair. He went off to screw her, the shit hit the fan, and he’s back. Doormat.

She’s relatively young, has her kids, has lots of money — she could go find someone else that would not treat her like crap. There comes a time when you just have to cut your losses. Blake on June 24, 2009 at 7:12 PM

Yes, she certainly could do that. Or maybe she’d like to recover her M for the sake of her boys. Or for herself.

Marsh on June 24, 2009 at 7:44 PM

People don’t always get what they want. Her husband didn’t change, didn’t come back to her because he wanted her, didn’t come back because of the kids. He came back because he probably had second thoughts about his political career and he got caught.

Can the Republicans hold it together for just like 5 minutes? I am so sick of what seems like a long line of Rep. politicians who can’t keep it in their pants. How are we ever going to regain control in 2010 if we keep hearing these stories like Sanford and Ensign? They run as social conservatives and the first time they get a scent of a woman who might possibly have sex with them they are off to the races. If they can’t stop cheating then the party is going to have to abandoned the whole family values, social conservative stance and just run as social liberals who are strong economic, national security conservatives. You can’t keep getting caught up in this stuff and not have people start to think the party as a whole is full of people who are hypocrits and only pay lips service to these issues . People understand adultery and find it tittilating. Not to mention it gives the media a story to distract the public from the Obamacare, Cap & Tax debate.

church on June 24, 2009 at 9:10 PM

I just heard The State reporter who busted Sanford at the airport say that he was confronted with the emails and that’s what made him confess at the Press Conference. He denied everything until she assured him there was proof.
