Video: The freaky deaky Mark Sanford press conference; Update: Wife told him to leave two weeks ago; Update: SC paper reprints e-mails to mistress

posted at 4:31 pm on June 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

He could have been president, now he’s finished: Witness the power of the male libido. The full video’s here but I’m giving you the three-minute nitty gritty below. Watch the girl over his right shoulder smile as he admits the affair, thereby adding an extra element of freaky-deakiness to this debacle.

Under different circumstances I think he could have survived this, but it’s a quirk of our politics that voters don’t mind cheating as much as they do inept cheating. Infidelity makes you a cad; unannounced week-long disappearances and rambling confessional pressers about the new lady in your life makes you a cad and erratic, and Americans don’t dig erratic in their would-be presidents. Word on the street via Geraghty is that if he doesn’t resign the state legislature will move to impeach him. Not sure what the grounds would be — dereliction of duty for dropping off the map for a week, maybe? — but I doubt he’ll have to be pushed like Blagojevich was.

At the rate we’re going, I’m starting to think Obama might run unopposed in 2012. Exit question: Think The One’s happy that his big health-care infomercial tonight has to compete for headlines tomorrow with Sanford and Iran?

Update: An eloquent statement from Mrs. S. The money bit:

I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband’s infidelity I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage. We reached a point where I felt it was important to look my sons in the eyes and maintain my dignity, self-respect, and my basic sense of right and wrong. I therefore asked my husband to leave two weeks ago.

This trial separation was agreed to with the goal of ultimately strengthening our marriage. During this short separation it was agreed that Mark would not contact us. I kept this separation quiet out of respect of his public office and reputation, and in hopes of keeping our children from just this type of public exposure. Because of this separation, I did not know where he was in the past week.

Update: Evidently this has been an open secret for some time because The State newspaper has been sitting on e-mails between Sanford and his lady friend since December. A sample:

Three and finally, while all the things above are all too true – at the same time we are in a hopelessly – or as you put it impossible – or how about combine and simply say hopelessly impossible situation of love. How in the world this lightening strike snuck up on us I am still not quite sure. As I have said to you before I certainly had a special feeling about you from the first time we met, but these feelings were contained and I genuinely enjoyed our special friendship and the comparing of all too many personal notes …

Er, how’d they get the e-mails?

He and President Bush are very much alike, except Perry is more outgoing.

I totally agree with that, he reminds me way too much of GW. He says all the right things when he’s running but once he gets elected he backs down on all of it, he also seems to sell out to the big $ interests every time, like when he tried to push the HPV immunizations down our throats.

No, he wouldn’t dump the bimbo and you kicked him out.

Blake on June 24, 2009 at 5:44 PM

If Mrs. Sanford told him not to contact her until he had ended his affair, that meant she was going to protect herself from the pain of watching him cheat on her, while waiting for her H’s affair to end. That was actually a smart move, since almost ALL affairs end w/in 2 years.

Mrs. Sanford also said that her husband earned another chance at their marriage. How? By continuing to cheat on her? By allowing her to be humiliated in public? Yech.

Maybe this is her way of reminding him that she is still open to recovering their M, if he will end the affair.

McCotter’s my #1 choice, but he’s “just” a Representative. How long has it been since we’ve elected a president who wasn’t previously a governor, senator, or vice president? Not saying it can’t happen, it just hasn’t in a long time. Besides, I think McCotter’s probably the most intelligent, articulate, grounded person in government today–essentially making him ineligible for consideration…

So true . . . and nobody has to go back to the Founding Fathers. Look at the press conspiracy to keep JFK’s flagrant cheating secret.

For me, it’s more about what his extremely boneheaded moves of the past week than the affair itself. That’s between the Sanfords . . . at least it should be.

The State newspaper has been sitting on e-mails between Sanford and his lady friend since December

Big surprise. The DNC probably had this access to this information as well. Hence the “We fear Sanford the most” press releases that came out in January & February. The Democrats wanted Sanford to become the nominee, so they could destroy the GOP after the nomination in 2012.

Compare and contrast to the fact that Sarah’s email was hacked by libtards as well, but they didn’t find anything discriminating. (Believe me, it would have come out once McCain/Palin was 10% ahead of Obama/Biden in late September).

Why does the left hate Sarah? Because she is the real threat, unlike Sanford, Romney, Huntsman and others they claim to be afraid of.

In many ways Sanford has fought the good fight in SC. I live here, and although I’m not plugged in to the political circles my take is that Sanford never had any interest in running for POTUS. He’s rich. He’s smart. He’s secure. He’s set.

That isn’t to say that I condone his behavior. He has a lovely wife and four young sons. This isn’t a good example to set, but as others have noted this sort of thing is not much of a surprise. As far as governing Sanford is very good, imo. His personal life sadly is now a mess. Rush said today if Sanford were a Democrat this incident would be a resume enhancement.

I never thought Sanford was serious about running for the big prize in 2012, so we might as well move on.

txag92 on June 24, 2009 at 6:12 PM

Yeah, it’s no wonder she didn’t want to let him go. Those words would make any woman feel cherished.

The ugly truth is that it wasn’t her curves, body, lips, kisses or touch that was rocking Sanford’s world. It was his FANTASY about the affair that was.

B/c if they were to see their “relationship” through. The reality of the pain they leave behind them (their children and spouses) would put REALITY into a clearer focus for both of them.

Add to it the idea of two selfish, lying, cheaters living together full time….having to pay bills, take out the garbage, care for unhappy children…and suddenly those feelings of love will reveal themselves as the pure fantasy they were.

99.9% of all affairs end.

That’s because he has been reduced to a simpering schoolboy. In my former life as marriage counselor, I saw this oogey emotionality all too frequently. Often men in mid-life turn the page back and relive their adolescence. Psychology Today, back in the 80′s, used to call this Male Menopause.

The release of these emails must be especially painful for Jenny. Her husband is still caught up in a terrible situation.

It’s probably a good thing Sanford’s national political career is over. He has a lot of emotional work to do to become a fully functioning adult on all eight cylinders. Reality settles in rather quickly with this much public exposure.

marybel on June 24, 2009 at 6:32 PM

Something tells me Slick Willy and John “The Hair” Edwards never said or even though such things about their mistresses. I feel bad for his family, but as a libertarian, I think that sometimes you have to pursue the things that make you happy and forget about the consequences. A beautiful line from the woman’s email:

something hard to believe even for myself as it’s also a kind of impossible love, not only because of distance but situation. Sometimes you don’t choose things, they just happen… I can’t redirect my feelings and I am very happy with mine towards you.”

There’s one major difference between Sanford’s situation and McGreevey, Spitzer, etc.: No allegation of illegal or seriously unethical conduct. There’s no evidence that this woman was rewarded with a job, state contract, or other payola as was the situation with McGreevey. She’s not a prostitute. Here in Kentucky, our governor two governors ago, Democrat Paul Patton, was busted for having an affair with a woman he appointed to the lottery commission. He didn’t resign and there was a lot more ethical questions than there are in this situation.

Banging a broad or banging abroad?

The first one I don’t care; the second I do. Because we should all buy American.

Professor Blather on June 24, 2009 at 5:01 PM

ROTFLMAO!!!!!! Holy God, that was hilarious.

But I digress, back to the subject. The argument that somehow “all” Republicans are hypocrites (for the failings of ONE man), or that the GOP should abandon their stand on the principles of family values and morality, are ludicrous. The PRINCIPLES are not the ‘problem’, it’s the people who are supposed to uphold them. If THEY fail, then THEY have failed; that doesn’t mean the original principle was wrong to begin with or should be abandoned.

Precisely. That is why we should ignore what the enemy wants us to do. In fact we should do the opposite.

Geochelone on June 24, 2009 at 6:35 PM

Though I have started every day by 6 this morning woke at 4:30, I guess since my body knew it was the last day, and I went out and ran the excavator with lights until the sun came up. To me, and I suspect no one else on earth, there is something wonderful about listening to country music playing in the cab, air conditioner running, the hum of a huge diesel engine in the back ground, the tranquillity that comes with being in a virtual wilderness of trees and marsh, the day breaking and vibrant pink coming alive in the morning clouds – and getting to build something with each scoop of dirt.”

I think he has a job writing commercials for John Deere.

I had no idea that Waco was a hotbed of liberalism now. I guarantee that College Station will NEVER swing left.

They got them through the FOIA! He used his work computer! Idiot.

Blake on June 24, 2009 at 6:36 PM

No one needs to excuse Sanford’s behavior. He ruined his family, and that’s a horrible thing for any person to choose. As foolish as he was to play the cheating buffoon, he had the honesty to confess to his wife and to the public. And Sanford never stole money from people and has fought the good fight to preserve our Constitutional Republic with low taxes and less federal impositions.

All the more reason to berate Democrats for their corruptions; Democrats don’t have the guts to make a public confession of their failings and never make recompense for their thievery, murders, and illicit sex. Their sins are far greater, yet they presume the right to pass judgment on others. Justice Kennedy, Senator Kennedy, Sen.Jefferson, Pres.Clinton is immersed in Branch Davidian blood, et.al.

If they got them through an FOIA request, Sanford knew the press had them. Duh.

Well, at least we’ve got really important stuff like this to talk about while blood runs in the streets of Tehran and the NorKs prepare to wipe us off the face of the earth . . . not to mention the fascist fraud shoving cap & trade, socialized medicine and a host of other goodies down our throats.

Hate to ruin this all for you, jimmy, but the “romantic” stuff you so admired between Sanford and his Argentinian is actually standard boilerplate adultery email. It’s all pretty much the same.

marybel on June 24, 2009 at 6:40 PM

If Mrs. Sanford heard this press conference, and if she still loves him, having him mention his mistress first when listing those he’d hurt, must have felt just awful.

Governor Sanford loves his mistress, and not his wife. That’s plain to see. Most affairs do end but there are those that don’t.

I’ll be surprised if the Sanfords stay married.

This is terrible for his boys. Though Mrs. Sanford expressed what’s at stake very well in her statement, so she’ll navigate all of this with aplomb.

Agreed, the emails are very romantic, and I’m happy that, at least for a short time, he was happy with this woman.

Romantic? Riiiiight.

He stroke her ego and she stroke his.

This is typical affair language. It reflects the insane emotions that come when one is risking everything that is good and decent in one’s life.

I feel bad for his family, but as a libertarian, I think that sometimes you have to pursue the things that make you happy and forget about the consequences. A beautiful line from the woman’s email:

something hard to believe even for myself as it’s also a kind of impossible love, not only because of distance but situation. Sometimes you don’t choose things, they just happen… I can’t redirect my feelings and I am very happy with mine towards you.”
jimmy the notable on June 24, 2009 at 6:32 PM

Beautiful?

Lying and betraying the person you promised God you would be faithful to is beautiful to you?

She could have redirected her feelings by cutting off all contact w/ him and ACTING as a woman w/ integrity.

Marsh on June 24, 2009 at 6:42 PM

It is good that this is coming out now instead of during an election cycle. The Dems are great with those October Surprises and would have held it until then if no one else spilled it.

Jenny Sanford…run for governor. You’ll win in a landslide! Keep Andre’ Bauer out!

SouthernGent on June 24, 2009 at 6:45 PM

I am so sick of these weak-willed politicians on both sides of the fence.

Screwing interns, screwing hookers, screwing Argentinians… why not? They’ve been screwing the people for years.

Where are the men of this world? Men of integrity, men of resolve, and strength? I know they exist… history is lined with them! Where are they today?

I am ssoooo sick of these people!

Daddy-O on June 24, 2009 at 4:47 PM

You know what pisses me off?
These men agonize over picking between multiple women, like a glutton at a buffet.
Yeah, screw you. Some of us would be happy to have just one look our way in our lifetimes.

Yep!

They all follow the same script!

Marsh on June 24, 2009 at 6:47 PM

Mrs. Sanford was kicking him out before he split town. The beans were already spilled. What a pathetic show of selfish immaturity in a man aged 49 with sons.

But he fought the fiscal conservative fight, where almost all other politicians caved.

I don’t think that Sanford’s career should be “ruined”–just soiled.
