Video: The freaky deaky Mark Sanford press conference; Update: Wife told him to leave two weeks ago; Update: SC paper reprints e-mails to mistress

posted at 4:31 pm on June 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

He could have been president, now he’s finished: Witness the power of the male libido. The full video’s here but I’m giving you the three-minute nitty gritty below. Watch the girl over his right shoulder smile as he admits the affair, thereby adding an extra element of freaky-deakiness to this debacle.

Under different circumstances I think he could have survived this, but it’s a quirk of our politics that voters don’t mind cheating as much as they do inept cheating. Infidelity makes you a cad; unannounced week-long disappearances and rambling confessional pressers about the new lady in your life makes you a cad and erratic, and Americans don’t dig erratic in their would-be presidents. Word on the street via Geraghty is that if he doesn’t resign the state legislature will move to impeach him. Not sure what the grounds would be — dereliction of duty for dropping off the map for a week, maybe? — but I doubt he’ll have to be pushed like Blagojevich was.

At the rate we’re going, I’m starting to think Obama might run unopposed in 2012. Exit question: Think The One’s happy that his big health-care infomercial tonight has to compete for headlines tomorrow with Sanford and Iran?

Update: An eloquent statement from Mrs. S. The money bit:

I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband’s infidelity I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage. We reached a point where I felt it was important to look my sons in the eyes and maintain my dignity, self-respect, and my basic sense of right and wrong. I therefore asked my husband to leave two weeks ago.

This trial separation was agreed to with the goal of ultimately strengthening our marriage. During this short separation it was agreed that Mark would not contact us. I kept this separation quiet out of respect of his public office and reputation, and in hopes of keeping our children from just this type of public exposure. Because of this separation, I did not know where he was in the past week.

Update: Evidently this has been an open secret for some time because The State newspaper has been sitting on e-mails between Sanford and his lady friend since December. A sample:

Three and finally, while all the things above are all too true – at the same time we are in a hopelessly – or as you put it impossible – or how about combine and simply say hopelessly impossible situation of love. How in the world this lightening strike snuck up on us I am still not quite sure. As I have said to you before I certainly had a special feeling about you from the first time we met, but these feelings were contained and I genuinely enjoyed our special friendship and the comparing of all too many personal notes …

Er, how’d they get the e-mails?

Well, I’m officially jaded – because I realize that I don’t even care anymore. I just assume all politicians do this stuff … and I’ll vote for whoever will 1) keep down taxes, 2) work to ensure individual liberty, 3) protect the American culture and heritage, 4) be tough on our enemies abroad, and 5) cut government spending and waste.

At this point, I don’t care if you’re out humping camels every night. (Get it? Camels? hump? I’ll be in town all week. Tip your waitstaff. Try the veal.) As long as you can do the job. I’ve given up on my ideals about leadership having character. I just want effective.

Brat on June 24, 2009 at 5:08 PM

Here’s my only frustration: why don’t politicians understand the basic rules?

It’s pretty simple: if you’re a liberal Democrat, you can cheat on your wife all you want. You can take drugs. You can burn flags. Nobody cares. Your voters won’t mind a bit.

Ah – but get caught acting racist, or skimming from the till, or being too supportive of evil corporations, or being too patriotic, or supporting the troops, or waving the flag too enthusiastically … and its buh bye time.

Conversely, if you’re a Republican, nobody much cares if you’re a bit greedy, if you cozy up to the capitalists, if you’re a gun-loving Bible-toting hawk. Again, the folks who voted for you don’t mind.

But no boinking Argentinian babes while allegedly nude hiking. It’s just a no-go.

So it’s pretty simple: pick which sin you can’t avoid – and go join THAT party. It’ll work out great.

But for the love of Obama and/or God – don’t get the rules mixed up. Democrats can’t be the man; they have to (pretend to) damn the man. And “family values” types have to keep the little man in their pants. Them’s the rules.

Somebody should write a “How to Be Stupid Yet Politically Successfull for Dummies.” Then everybody could join the right party, and we could all skip the gotcha game and get to work.

I was referring to lying to the public, even in the face of irrefutable evidence, on TV, while holding back tears, then lying under oath. Hmmm, where I have seen that before? Or lying, even after being busted by the National Enquirer, still lying about the kid’s paternity. Sanford blew it but he could have drug it out in a much more scandalous, damaging way to conservatives. Sadly, it won’t matter since conservatives are held to much higher standards.

Monica on June 24, 2009 at 5:11 PM

Governor Sanford’s wife just now:

I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. I kept this separation quiet out of respect of his public office and reputation, and in hopes of keeping our children from just this type of public exposure.

Because of this separation, I did not know where he was in the past week.

I believe enduring love is primarily a commitment and an act of will, and for a marriage to be successful, that commitment must be reciprocal. I believe Mark has earned a chance to resurrect our marriage.

Good for her.

That is a big mistake. We tried that last time. The only redeeming thing about McCain was he’s a war hero.

There are some good people in Congress, but we need them in Congress to fight the majority of crooks and liars that are there.

If we damn Sanford we have to damn Benjamin Franklin and possibly Thomas Jefferson. Certain types of people are just the cheating type, unfortunately they make the mistake of getting married first instead of doing what is more in tune with their nature, namely staying single and banging everything with a pulse. Just don’t get married or have kids.

And of course, the double standard of the MSM rears its ugly head once again. As Rush pointed out on his show, the same “journalists” that are appalled and disgusted by a man apologizing for infidelity give others a pass and a “boys will be boys” wave-off, including Presidents who pujure themselves to avoid getting caught.

TheMightyMonarch on June 24, 2009 at 5:25 PM

And “family values” types have to keep the little man in their pants. Them’s the rules.

Look, guys, if you’re a Republican, and you’re even remotely interested in running for President, keep Mr. Happy in your pants. The world is a much smaller place than it was even 20 years ago. Believe me, if you’re doin’ the freak nasty with someone other than your wife, somebody’s gonna find out.

Look, he can’t run his own “affairs”, let alone the affairs of state. We don’t need this kind of drama.

I thank him for giving us Sarah Palin.
That’s the best thing he did in his Quixotic run for the White House.

He’s good on spending and most National Security issues, but he drives me nuts on just about everything else.

Brian1972 on June 24, 2009 at 5:32 PM

The fact remains that republicans get caught, have to do mea culpas until the cows get home and liberals can do any bleeping thing they want and get away with it without the slightest bit of problem

that’s proof this whole damn system is bleeped up

Defector01 on June 24, 2009 at 5:32 PM

We’re down to Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin now. Maybe Jindal?

therightwinger on June 24, 2009 at 5:33 PM

Jindal might be it!

changer1701 on June 24, 2009 at 4:42 PM

Jindal is more of the same. Anyone who’s a Rhodes scholar is an instant no vote. They are the means by which globalism puts on an American face.

HornetSting on June 24, 2009 at 5:19 PM

Thanks; I don’t post comments a lot but I am an avid lurker/reader of Hot Air and enjoy your comments.

What bugged me throughout the 2008 campaign was that the GOP had not “groomed” any women to get in the running for POTUS…

Yeah yeah I know we are not the party of affirmative action but everyone knew Hillary was going to run and was the front runner (of course until she got side swiped by a black man)and the GOP only offered the same stuffy old men. So I think we really need to encourage more conservative women. Elizabeth Dole, KB Hutchison have been disappointing. It is tough to be a conservative woman much less a conservative female politician (see Sarah Palin) so hope to hear and see more of Bachmann and Marsha Blackburn (TN Congresswoman). I can’t right now name anymore off the top of my head…anyone know of any others?

Brat on June 24, 2009 at 5:35 PM

Allah,

You are implying that Gov. Sarah Palin will not be around in 2012?

She’ll be the only one in the GOP left.

How about….Palin/Cheney(liz)?

I can see Olby in a wheelchair with drool now due to the stroke after that one is announced. Apologies to drooling wheelchair bound people, but sometimes I am guilty of friendly fire goin after him.

Sapwolf on June 24, 2009 at 5:37 PM

So, let me get this straight:

Based on Mrs. Sanford’s new statement, they did a trial separation because she knew of the infidelity was trying to fix the marriage.

Sanford then holds up his end of the bargain by using this “alone time” to run off to have a little fun with the woman he shouldn’t even be speaking to again.

Did I hear that right?

If so, he comes off as an even bigger loser now.

KellyBomelly on June 24, 2009 at 5:37 PM

My defense of Mark Sanford this morning was a wasted effort. I am disgusted with him and sad for his family.

katy on June 24, 2009 at 5:19 PM

Ditto. But his wife sounds like a remarkable, impressive woman. How do you manage this situation, with the religious ramifications of lifelong commitment and forgiveness, but also “look your sons in the eyes”. Her statement is remarkable, and seemingly lays bare her feelings and actions.

I’m sure Sanford is enough of a man to repair that marriage and at least attempt to repair his relationship with his sons. Politics is over now, because he’s not a Democrat. But that’s ok. There are more important things in life.

Jaibones on June 24, 2009 at 5:38 PM

Don’t know that I should get into this now – Crazy about Palin, but have been watching the career of Gov. Perry for years, and am not happy with many of his waffles. He is the consummate politician, and I don’t mean that in a good way. He is articulate, charming, good-looking and seemingly down-to-earth, but a strong conservative at heart he is not, and believe me, as a fellow Aggie, it pains me to say this, for I like this guy – hard not to. It will be intriguing to follow this upcoming race though, for he will once again become the conservative I love( to be able to beat Kay Bailey), and I will vote for him again, but once the race is over, and he has won, it will be back to waffles. He and President Bush are very much alike, except Perry is more outgoing. Did you follow the Governor during the shamnesty mess? I did, and he heard from me plenty.

Furious with Gov. Sanford – the forehead was on with Wolf (I was watching for Iran coverage) and he brought up how tired he was of the Republicans always claiming to be the party with the moral high ground. He went on and on. It was awful – just what I expected and what we don’t need.

texasaggie on June 24, 2009 at 5:38 PM

I find myself more disappointed than angry.

jimmy2shoes on June 24, 2009 at 5:38 PM

I think word got leaked from the inside to the press about this, they started asking questions and the rest is history. had whoever leaked kept quiet he would’ve got away with this for now

KellyBomelly on June 24, 2009 at 5:37 PM

Yeah, that was the punchline for me, too. Trial separation? No contact for 2 weeks? Hey, what a fabulous opportunity to ditch my security detail and run off to Argentina with the source of the problem!

On top of the moral considerations, he made himself appear so flaky and unreliable, the way he did it, all sneaky like.

califcon on June 24, 2009 at 5:43 PM

still think he was “thrown under the bus”
heh…
Just give the masses a Palin/Huck ticket. This is why social conservativism is unpracticeable nationally, it requires a level of personal morality antithetical to political success and jeopardizes the careers of its advocates with its ownn high standards. I coming awfully, nay lamentably close to saying that Ron Paul was right. God help us all!

I think you got a winner professor!

portlandon on June 24, 2009 at 5:22 PM

I’d rather see “I’m a Politician, Get Me Out of Here”. The “Celebrity” version is in a jungle, this one should be in a swamp… I’m sure we can quickly come to a consensus on the location.

malclave on June 24, 2009 at 5:44 PM

Thank you, Sanford, for giving fodder to the Left. Now go to hell.

Levinite on June 24, 2009 at 5:44 PM

I’ll be in CA two weekends from now for my parents 50th wedding anniversary party.

I cannot even begin to comprehend how devastating a divorce of my parents would have been for me and my siblings.

How can you ever make up to your parents the huge debt that they incurred thinking of me instead of themselves for all these years. The kinds of differences they have had over the years would have created a thousand divorces in today’s culture.

You cannot overemphasize how important it is to children growing up to have a mother and a father who are devoted to each other and a close second to the kids.

So much of our problems stem from broken homes, which of course ultimately stems from selfishness and the ‘me’ culture, which I’m guilty of in healthy doses.

An eloquent statement from Mrs. S.

Uh, no. It’s an insult to people’s intelligence. She should have not said anything at all.

This trial separation was agreed to with the goal of ultimately strengthening our marriage.

No, he wouldn’t dump the bimbo and you kicked him out.

Mrs. Sanford also said that her husband earned another chance at their marriage. How? By continuing to cheat on her? By allowing her to be humiliated in public? Yech.

Blake on June 24, 2009 at 5:44 PM

I therefore asked my husband to leave two weeks ago.

Hey, a political wife with some self-respect. Finally.

Good for her.

Sapwolf on June 24, 2009 at 5:44 PM

I also think more people get divorced today because women actually have options. Back in the “olden days,” very few women had a viable economic alternative to staying with their husbands

blatantblue on June 24, 2009 at 5:46 PM

more upset for tom davis and some c street acquaintance than for his own wife or staff. wretched.

DrSteve on June 24, 2009 at 5:46 PM

What everyone seems to forget is that Sarah was much more qualified to be president than Obama. She had executive experience and had done well as the governor of Alaska. This puts her in the drivers seat for the 2012 nomination. Her experience will probably still be superior to Obama’s in 2012. We could have had an experienced executive for VP after the last election. Instead we got a community organizer without a birth certificate.

That is Mrs. Sanford’s explanation. We don’t know what was really said. More telling is that he dragged it out for five months. Fish or cut bait.

You are very lucky. My parents divorced when I was 9 back in 1972 when divorce was not as common as it is now. I have six older brothers. The divorce affected each of us differently.
